Don't forget about the grain of the material matching the grain of the garment. Very important to mark on your pattern.
I use a pin to poke through shoulder seams into paper to mark the pattern, then I just draw the lines in when I take the clothing off the pattern paper. That way, I do not accidentally shift any pieces

dude, youre the best. i've recently gotten into sewing, and these videos could not be more helpful. i don't have the patience- nor the time- to watch a hundred fifteen minute videos regarding some of my most basic questions and concerns, so these short but sweet ones are perfect!!! you da bomb glory allan.
if i can, i prefer to unsew it all flat and copy exactly what's cut with a pencil, then I'll take my rules and make the lines smooth and clear, add all kind of signals as drafts, seam alowance as notes, words as front/back/amount of hem/etc so i can literally clone it and when i get bored or loose/gain weight i can make a new pattern
That works well with clothes that are too worn out or torn. I have a shirt that I love, who finally gave out after many years, so I unpicked everything and copied the pattern 😊
I tend to use pencil for that first pass to keep ink off the edges. I trace the true shape of sleeves, etc and add the SA to the pattern after with a French curve ruler. On some complex areas like a crotch that is not on the edge of the flat item I will use a pin and poke through every 1/4” or so then draw it in later and add SA. Great stuff!

I have my grandmother's lovely tracing wheel that she taught me to use for tracing patterns and cloning items onto new sheets of paper. It's faster and easier for outlining clothing items and the dotted line it creates makes cutting the pattern out a breeze.
Depending on the garment, I’ll pin through the clothes onto kraft paper and then connect the dots, adding seam allowance later. 🙂

I have sewn my own clothing for years. Sewing patterns are often sized oddly, forcing me to redesign and figure out how to make them fit me. Copying ready to wear is great for learning fit and clothing construction. And to understand just what makes a garment special and worthy of wearing.
Understanding the stretch of a fabric, the fabric content, and the fabric drape will help one to know if they will get a good result. I have also built a complete block pattern set from clothing I enjoy wearing and find flattering and that I can actually wear.
One huge detail I also learned is that sewing your own clothing can help one find cohesion in a wardrobe. Once you know how to sew clothing as difficult as ready to wear, you can design, create a pattern and sew almost any garment you see or own.

This is so true! The best way to get clothes that fit, and that you like, is to clone ones that you already like and that fit you well.
The most accurate way is to enjoy the item until it’s worn out, unpick the seams, press the pieces flat, and use them as pattern pieces. Keep in mind that clothing that’s been worn and laundered will often have distortions in the shape of the pieces through stretching that happens as you move. You’ll need to adapt your traced clone pattern slightly to account for this distortion.
With stretchier or delicate fabrics, it helps if you iron the pieces of your deconstructed fav garment onto a stabilizer of some sort, to keep them from changing shape as you work with them. Subtle changes in the shape of a pattern piece make real differences to how a garment ends up fitting and sitting on your body. You can see this in a commercial, multi-sized pattern; the differences between one size and the next are often very small changes to width and length, for instance.
It can really help with cloning a garment, if you have some familiarity with how sewing patterns look and function, because then you’ll be able to “read” the pattern in the garment you want to copy, and see how to recreate its outlines from the fuzzy outlines suggested by the fabric. This is especially true if you’re going to recreate a pattern from a whole, not a deconstructed, garment.
Another important factor in getting a finished clone garment that you’ll like wearing, is fabric selection. Choose fabric for the clone garment that’s similar in weight, stretch (or lack thereof), and texture, to the original. Very different fabric can also be fun, but you’ll end up with a very different garment, usually. If you’re trying to recreate a fave, stick to fabric as close to the original as possible. If you’re just playing around to see what happens, and don’t mind getting some strange results, go for it and try making that favorite denim jacket out of Terry cloth. 😊

TBH - this is a high leveled skill set that REALLY only should be done IF and only if you understand garment construction - aka NOT if "you don't want to buy commercial patterns." -reason? If the garment has complicated seams, easing or other hidden seaming details - unless you know how to anticipate this, your "clone" will NEVER turn out the same and lead to frustrations later. DO commercial patterns 1st and get good at anticipating and understanding garment construction before doing this....
Good advice. Start with a simple garment, buy patterns and study them and read whatever you can find on the subject. But, don't be so afraid to try it that you merely stick with store bought patterns. Also, I bought draft "fabric" at discount prices to test out the patterns I made, which was a cheap way to learn about mistakes before investing in expensive fabric. I was a professional dressmaker for years.
Right. A sleeve pattern looks nothing like the finished article. Same for trouser legs. Ok if you want a ba twing top.

That's tricky, you'll wanna undo the seams and take the pants apart for a true clone.
I have been doing this for years. I'd like to see if you have any better tricks that I can improve my cloning methods.

My issues with this method has always been that the backs are usually a tidbit larger than the fronts 😅 maybe I'm trying to be too precise 🤔
Why inside out ?
I have a problem with my shoulder seams matching up, when cloning a sleeveless top. Could it have anything to do with cutting the pattern out on the fabric, like I should be flipping the pattern over first or something. Im getting pretty frustrated. Please help with a tip as to what I am doing wrong? The neck in front wants to pucker outward?????
Hey hmmm, is it the collar that's puckering outward? If so, shorten the length of the fabric and then stretch it to meet the circumference of the neck hole. Check out my boxy tee vid, there's a section about that :)

Where did you get that craft paper?
At a sewing store, I don't think allll stores have it but this one did. This store I'd say is more into the notions and accessories than fabrics
I buy mine from office supply stores.
I find it easier to unpick my skirts etc and then sew them back up after I have traced them out. Much more precise. But this definitely wouldn’t be practical for things like jeans and other fiddly clothes!
If you use a roll of thick , see through plastic for your pattern… you can mark using a sharpie, make notes without tearing . Roll up or fold .. and it will last for decades . A $20 roll will last for years , even doing full length gowns. Easy to cut , won’t rip!

It's still there, you just have to change "Add-Ons" to N/A since there's no thread that comes with the digital pattern
Sometimes it’s not a matter of not wanting to buy a pattern - I’m a retro 1950’s type gal, and the patterns can be very hard to get or are in vintage sizing which makes sizing a whole new ballgame. I have cloned one dress, and the main issue I had were the darts. How can you tell how much fabric they put into the dart when they have trimmed the excess? I got this so wrong on the first try that I had to throw the dress out and start again. The result isn’t perfect, but it’s wearable.
You can often tell by finding the grain of the fabric and drawing lines beyond the s/a in the direction of the grain. Then (on your pattern paper) cut where the dart is stitched on the actual fabric, and spread until the grain lines up.
My problem is all the darts, pleats, etc, that are not traceable.
I don't recommend using magic marker. It's too messy.
