You nailed it. More power and torque than a Harley 883 (no exaggeration). 350lbs with fuel. Long travel but firm street suspension. Killer brembo brakes. 6000 mile valve check intervals. Put the Prerun rack and a Kriega bag on the back and you can do light touring on it, put some Pirelli scorpion tires on and bomb fire roads with it. Almost all of the practical hooligan fun of a hand grenade 50 hour replace-the-piston bike without all the maintenance headaches. Get yourself a Wings exhaust for $425 for even more BRAAP. A deezer is an antique and there isn't anything else with power and reliability. Not a difficult choice. The only hard part is trying to find one still available.
exnihilo415 Exactly man. I love this bike. I was actually looking at the gpr racing exhausts, but I know the wings is another popular one as well. One of my favorite thing about the bike is how smooth and balanced the geometry is, despite having way more power than my old dr650 I had, it wheelies so controlled. my guess is because of the efi and the rear mounted tank.
Heavy for a supermoto. Light for a streetbike. Glass half empty / Glass half full. Either way you get ~70hp and 6000 miles between major services. In a lot of ways it's a great compromise bike. If you want to go lighter / more dirt get a KTM 500 EXC and convert it to supermoto. If you want to go more power / more street get a Ducati Hypermotard. Those are seemingly the best Up/Down options.
My thing is the 701 is $12k and a DRZ is $5400. The 701 doesn't have many available mods or luggage options and the DRZ has unlimited mods and aftermarket parts.
You drove by my fam's house on eden terrace. Once you said Winthrop I was like "wonder if he is near their house." I live in seattle and ride a DRZ. It's just crazy that I would see their house on the other side of the county in a youtube video, small world.
+wildcard252 Tgeres some nice ads houses on that road and yeah that's the cool thing about making these videos. You get to see all kinds of cool places from the cockpit of a bike
Good points you made in your comparison, I have pretty much the same opinion. The ultimate deciding factor that lead me to purchase the 500exc over the SMC-R/701 was the issue of weight. I figure, if I'm going to get a flickable hooligan bike, it might as well be Ultra-light and flickable and found it does pay dividends. The 500 is not much heavier than an MX bike. In supermoto trim, no SAS equipment, aftermarket can, barkbusters, radiator grills, bar-risers it sits at around 115kg fully fueled. You can essentially crash it into a brick wall and it just bounces off- very forgiving, which makes it the perfect hooligan bike. If I was going to do any sort of commuting on it, I would have bought the 701 hands-down. But I have a road bike for that. The 500 is horrible on highways/long trips. Terribly uncomfortable (even with custom seats) So each have their place. But for pure hooliganism, the 500 takes the cake. The extra 30kg on factory sumo's is very noticeable, And I'd argue that a true Sumo should not exceed 120kg. If only someone had the balls to revise the SXV so it's not the pinnacle of unreliability- that thing would sell very well. Smooth, light-weight and better power/weight than any supermoto out there. One can dream right ?
+surg23 Exactly man. I almost bought the 17 500 before I realized the 701 existed. Like you said, I commute more and plan to do some Dual sport/adv type rides, so the 701 is just better suited for that.
I had to have the 701... got the 16, loved it.. sold it (for all the money) got the 2017 for that new motor. It's even better. Wings exhaust and put a 45t aluminum sprocket from my FE450. New gearing is so nice. No remap for Wings with insert. Tail tidy, bought euro blinkers for it from Germany. Love both my Husky. Had a Hypermotard SP before. Like the husky more!
JBernier2000 hell yeah. I think I'm gonna pick up a wings exhaust and mine has the euro map so I'd think I could run it without the insert if wanted. I'm not really sure about gearing, I like how it is now, but might buy a 1 or 2 tooth bigger rear sprocket for the rear eventually.
That Husky is badass lol. And DRZs will make ~40hp with a pipe, airbox mod, and jetting the stock carb, the FCR mainly helps with big bores. For me it only cost $100 for the right jet kit to make around 40 (I need to dyno it to know exactly lol)
MotoJeeper oh for sure, I'm not knocking the dizzer. There's a reason it's a popular bike and it's a well rounded bike for the price you pay. I just wish Suzuki would update the suspension, and put on FI.
I just sold my 2016 DRZ for a 701 last month. The 701 is way faster, way better suspension, way better looks. I did love my DRZ but I am not looking back.
Hi, I'm just getting into motercycle, I found a 2021 drz400sm for $6.6k out the door with 3k miles on it. It looks new but it has 3k miles on it A ktm690 is about 2x the price, I'm not sure if I should or be worth it, what do u think
How is the 701 maintenance and durability wise compared to the drz? I like he fact that the 701 is more powerful but idk if it's worth it because from what I've read the drz's are indestructible and are cheap to maintain
+TurboMeasel well I haven't put a ton of miles on mine yet, so I can't speak much for real world maintenance yet. But from the spec sheet it should be just as reliable if not more than the drz. It's got two oil filters in it so your oil lasts a long time, and the bike has 6k valve check intervals. I've been running rotella t4 in it and it loves it. So only time will tell.
hey if you could get a 2017 KTM 690 supermoto setup would you by it instead of the 701 i know there very much the same but i still like the 690 more what do you think?
+chris d I don't think I'd mind a 690, even though they are close to the same people say that the 791 with the new engine is way better, but people also say the 690 feels a little more racey, and the 701 is just buttery smooth while still have heaps of power on tap. From what I heard the 701 is more travel/commuter friendly.
whats the sweet spot cruise speed on it ? husky doesnt seem to be a reliable brand here ,seldom see one last for 10 years , hope this 701 stand the test of time
+sdq sdq Yeah only time will tell on tgereliability but so far I've beat on mine and it's had zero issues. Almost to 7500 miles and still running like the day I bought it. As for cruising stock gearing you can cruise 80-90 all day, with 15/46 gearing you can still cruise 70 easy.
Sick ride man! Unfortunately I don't have 11k to drop on a bike, so I settled with a used (900 miles) '13 DRZ400s for $3,500. 1/3 the price of a new husky and ALMOST as fun ;) The husky is what the DRZ wants to be when it grows up. I definitely power wheelie like you unless I have a bump for assistance, but I've got jets and a Yoshi exhaust on the way that'll make me want to do bad things.
MotardSteve I Meant to say I Can't power wheelie. Clutch ups only in 1st and 2nd so far but that's mostly lack of skill on my part. Keep on ripping that thing man, enjoy!
They have limited the KTM 690 SMR.. They are so hard to find new they only made a few in the UK. I'm trying my hardest for a KTM supplier to get me a 2017 but they can only get a Enduro. It's a ballache I have 8000 pound to buy a new bike but no KTM supplier can get me one
Hey motardsteve, even tho the 2016 version doesn't have the new motor it is easier to tune. 2017 has a different ecu that isn't made for map tuning. At least here in Europe the new engine is more restrictive on what you can do to it because of emission rules. Euro 5 emission fucked the 17 engine. It may have abit less vibration and 5 more hp, but its a bitch to tune.
ABCSMURF Hmmm interesting, I know it doesn't have the map switch under the seat anymore, and mine got the euro map put on it, and honestly I couldn't really ask for more power. I may try power commander on it eventually, but since it's hot the euro map on it, I can throw a slip on exhaust on it without having to re map it.
+Oleksii Silin The 701 seat is a bit wider in the back and longer since there's no gas tank up front, so you got more room to move around and fan slide up really far to push the bike down in turns without smashing your balls on the tank. 😂
How many miles can you get on a tank per average? I've got about 26k miles on my R1....2nd sport bike...been thinking it may be time for something new...and your channel and seeing others riding this bike....it may be time for a swap...
+Burner719 I've yet to really test it but it gets enough mileage to where I rarely see the gas light. I'd say it's somewhere around 130-150 miles a tank.
+Andyhe0516 Yeah it's pretty expensive but worth every penny. You can find some left over 16 model for around that price, not much difference from the 17 besides a few factors.
ahahaha hopefully they will be bakfyr status after I get enough practice in. I'm super rusty from not having a sumo for 8+ months prior. You'd be surprised how stable that rear mounted tank makes wheelies feel though.
Germaingazm Ha hell yeah man. The little guys gotta stick together. I checked out your channel and liked what I saw. Have you a sub (but my subs are hidden but I assure I'm subscribed.) Thanks for checking out the video man.
+Perry Livingston chopper maybe I'm pretty short with a 32 inseam and I am on the balls of my feet/toes at a stop. Best idea is to find one to sit on or test ride if possible.
+goodride2004 The xr650r are awesome big red pigs. And people mod the hell out of them too. Don't know if I could ever ride one though because I hear the seat height is crazy.
not to bad, I'm 6' tall and didn't have much trouble with it. couldn't get both feet flat with the dirt wheels on but with the 17" sumo setup its really nice. mine has pretty much everything done to it besides internals on the motor that I am aware of. full exhaust, carb, radiators, stabilizer, brake lines, pegs, gas tank, airbox, led lights, hoses... literally damn near everything. picked it up for $4500 and has over $4000 in mods / upgrades not including the supermoto kit I put on it. wish I could put a picture up here lol
MotardSteve I have a zx6r right now and can't decide whether I was to keep that or get a super moto. I'm going to get caught going 150 one of these days or am going to die. The husky just seems like an all around perfect bike.
Ben Butler The 701 has tons of mid range and mid high power on tap, with a 15t sprocket you want miss your zx6r much at all, and once you start exploring off road and national forest you'll be hooked. Sonething about launching a motorcycle off a jump brings joy to your soul. 😂
@Dangerous Dave Thanks for the tips man. Honestly I think I'm one of the lucky ones. My 2017 is still running the stock clutch slave at almost 16,000 miles
2019 DRZ400SM $7,350, 2019 Husquavarna 701 Supermoto $11,300 a $3950 difference in price. I dont know how much other people value their hard earned money but I couldn't justify risking a $11,300 bike to just hoon around on. The 701 is a nice bike but not $11,300 nice.
I mean to each their own. DRZ's are nice but if I was getting something other than the 701 it wouldn't he a drz, it would he a wr250r. Weighs less, has a ton of mod support, fuel injected, and just overall more updated
YoJewFriend it meets or exceeds jaso-ma/ma2 requirements therfore it's completely safe for wet clutch operation, plus my bike already sounds like a tractor so why not? 😂
+Jacopo Tersigni Yeah the 701 and smc ate similar in ways but the best comparison I've heard is the 701 is smoother and has a bigger tank wgere the ktm is a little more snappy/racey feeling.
MotardSteve smc-r is sooooo snappy! i rode my friend's for a week to try it out. he was selling it but i had to give it back... you know it would've been my first motorbike and it had its saddle too high(i'm 1,68), no ABS, too much of a snappy engine... i got a duke 390 new xD
Yeah might be a faster more powerful bike than a drz but not better drzs have been around for like 15 years practically unchanged, but almost 12 grand for a freaking dirtbike? If I was going to spend that much for a supermoto I would get a Ducati hypermotard or something like that. Sick bike but not for that money
Ehh you're talking about value but you say Ducati? You do you but if you want to spend that kind of money for a Ducati that are notorious for breaking down and being expensive to maintain go for it. The LC4 690 motor has been around for a good while. I'd rather pay 12k for a bike that runs at the end of the day, but that's just my opinion.
@@TwoWheelHighLife I mean for around town or short distance I'm sure the ktm husq engine would be strong but highway going 70-80 mph every day idk how reliable it would be. I'm not dissing these bikes but almost 12k? Not in my eyes is this worth it, I mean a 450 lacks 10 hp from this 701... at least with a Ducati 950 or 639 hypermotard you have double the power and I'm sure more street friendly and like 1 or 2 k more. But I get why someone would get a dirtbike supermoto because they are dope.
im currently saving up for my first bike and im looking at super motos, my nearest dealership happens to have both a drz400 and husqvarna 701 both brand new. in your opinion should i go for the 400 since im not as experienced? ive ridden small dirtbikes and mopeds before so i have a little experience but those dont compare to these bikes so i was wondering if you think the 701 is too much for a beginner, the thing is that theyre only about $2,500 apart
+Daniel Baldi Go 701, it's powerful but it's a single cylinder so it's not really a rocket like say a Supersport is. The power is very linear. I'd say go with the 701 because they're will come a point when you get really comfortable with riding and you may get bored with the drz's kinda mediocre suspension and power.
MotardSteve yeah getting bored is what im worried about since i dont wanna drop 7 grand and end up wanting more power in a couple months. i may save up and get the 701. thanks for replying, also how has the reliability been with it thus far? have you had any issues?
+Daniel Baldi only issue I ever had was the anti theft/immobilizer on it set off because the jackass dealer forgot to register the ecu for sale so after about 40 miles the bike locked me out. Other than that I've hammered on it and I'm currently at 6100 miles. Doing the first valve check this weekend. Doubt they'll need adjusting at all. Very happy with it thus far. Yeah I wouldn't but a d4z new because you'd be paying damn near 8k for 17 year old technology.
MotardSteve thats really good to hear, 6100 miles is a pretty good amount so im glad you havent had any problems other than that one thing. in a few months i’ll hopefully be able to get either the 701 or something similar. thanks again and good luck with that beast of a machine.
I think you made a great choice on the bike lol this video was basically like why I chose a 12oz sirloin steak over a mcdouble
Look At Me Luis Ahaha ha that's a funny and ironic metaphor.
Short on time
10:46 he starts talking about why he got the Husqvarna 701.
Glad to see this.... I couldn't take much more of the lispy rambling.

The 701 doesn't have many available mods or luggage options and the DRZ has unlimited mods and aftermarket parts.
Yeah I feel ya the Husky is definitely a more luxury bike but the drz isn't a bad bike by any means either.

Don't know if you ever got a chance to ride a WR250X but it's a very good sumo in it's own right. I hope to get a 701 after a few years.
+Sam Larson The 250x make crazy good stunt bikes. I rode one one time and they are pretty peppy 250's. If choose one over a drz.
I had a 2015 wr250r . Got tired of it really fast . Not enough nuts after my 2005 zx10r. Seriously considering the 701 for utr's and commuting.

not to bad, I'm 6' tall and didn't have much trouble with it. couldn't get both feet flat with the dirt wheels on but with the 17" sumo setup its really nice. mine has pretty much everything done to it besides internals on the motor that I am aware of. full exhaust, carb, radiators, stabilizer, brake lines, pegs, gas tank, airbox, led lights, hoses... literally damn near everything. picked it up for $4500 and has over $4000 in mods / upgrades not including the supermoto kit I put on it. wish I could put a picture up here lol
What's the top speed? Pretty quick on the highway?
+Ben Butler I've had it up to 110 and still had room to pull more
MotardSteve I have a zx6r right now and can't decide whether I was to keep that or get a super moto. I'm going to get caught going 150 one of these days or am going to die. The husky just seems like an all around perfect bike.
I'm just scared that I'll miss the power of my zx6r.
Ben Butler The 701 has tons of mid range and mid high power on tap, with a 15t sprocket you want miss your zx6r much at all, and once you start exploring off road and national forest you'll be hooked. Sonething about launching a motorcycle off a jump brings joy to your soul. 😂
good music another sumo very unknown of is the Cleveland cycleworks hooligan r 👌
JINJA nice didn't know about that one.
MotardSteve 👌 I want one when I can afford it
I remember when ccw only had two bikes out lol
Pick my 2018 up tomorrow!!! Booo Yaaaa
Awesome bike! What is the top speed?
130ish stock gearing
@Dangerous Dave check your gearing I hit 130 on mine when it was in stock gearing with a euro map.
I heard that the 701 U.S. using the ktm 690 motor
+charles robbins it uses the second generation duke 690 motor so 74hp, 1000 more rpms, and less vibes due to a second counter balancer shaft.
MotardSteve o.k. then.does the ktm 690 smc-r use the motor too.just curious as I font have nither bikes.
+charles robbins as far as I know the 690 enduro or smc didn't get the new engine yet
Great choice...
+Jester Entertainment Ha of course you'd say that. 😂 Love the 701 and watched a few of your vids prior to buying mine.
Aaah.. Good 'ol Husky!
Geez this video still gets views 😂😂 Almost 2 years later and still love it.
Would it be dumb to spend all that cash on one of these at 17? It's a lot of money I kind of don't want to see it go but I know I won't regret it
+Honda Cr 500 I'd say it well worth the investment if you plan to keep it long term. There's no other bike that comes close to it.
What about the KTM 690 SM?
At the time the 701 had the better engine and better specs. Now they're basically the same.
Why in the sam hell are you running a diesel truck oil in your bike?
YoJewFriend it meets or exceeds jaso-ma/ma2 requirements therfore it's completely safe for wet clutch operation, plus my bike already sounds like a tractor so why not? 😂
People have been using Rotella T6 for motorcycles for years. It is cheap and works great! Walmart has it.
Been running Rotella in Harley-Davidson and Japanese bikes, Subarus for 20 years. Have never had an issue. Have 320k on one Subaru.
I've been using it for 30+ years no issues
Hate to dig up a dead comment section but I run T4 in my Grom, XR600r, AND GSXR1000
Sold!
How much was your bike?
+Zechariah Stryhanyn 12k out the door
Canada Husqvarna 701 $14000, DRZ400sm $7600... I would like DRZ...)))
+Oleksii Silin that's only like a 10 gallon drum of maple syrup right? You can afford it. 😂
lol)) yep, for now)
It looks like in the northeast us it’s about 12 for the husky and and 7 for the drz. Might have to get an old dr650 to save a shitload.
Husky sm610 factory.shred that shit!
nice thanks
how much did you pay for it
+Michael Hopkins 12000 OTD 3k down finance remainder for 5 yrs
Every drz owner would buy 701 if they had the money
I love my drz...... Watching videos of a 701
i would ask why not a ktm smc
+Jacopo Tersigni because they aren't offered new anymore sadly
MotardSteve ah right! in some countries they are though
MotardSteve 701 is super sweet anyway... good choice bro
Ducati Hypermotard
+Michael Kastner ewww not a Duck
main topic starts here ;D 10:37
Yeah might be a faster more powerful bike than a drz but not better drzs have been around for like 15 years practically unchanged, but almost 12 grand for a freaking dirtbike? If I was going to spend that much for a supermoto I would get a Ducati hypermotard or something like that. Sick bike but not for that money
Just my opinion though
But I get why someone would get a dirtbike supermoto because they are dope.
you're buying a legendary, proven, and reliable bike with the DRZ. Husqvarna hasn't been proven yet.
=D
OffRoad SuperMoto :D

A cookie for you
im currently saving up for my first bike and im looking at super motos, my nearest dealership happens to have both a drz400 and husqvarna 701 both brand new. in your opinion should i go for the 400 since im not as experienced? ive ridden small dirtbikes and mopeds before so i have a little experience but those dont compare to these bikes so i was wondering if you think the 701 is too much for a beginner, the thing is that theyre only about $2,500 apart
+Daniel Baldi No problem man. Fingers crossed you'll be on a 701 soon. 😎
