- Join me for a walk around the heart of England's oldest recorded town: Colchester! Located on the eastern edge of Essex, this enthralling town has a history dating back around 2,000 years, having once served as the capital of Roman Britain! Since then, Colchester has been through everything you can imagine, from war to earthquakes, sieges and more, but its history somehow remains on spectacular display.
On our walk around Colchester, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including the Roman Balkerne Gate, Jumbo Water Tower, St. Peter's Church, the old Essex & Suffolk Fire Office, The Walking Woman, Colchester High Street, Colchester Town Hall (Moot Hall), Colchester Hippodrome, St. Martin's Church, the home of Jane & Ann Taylor (writers of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star), the Dutch Quarter, St. Helen's Chapel, Castle Park, Colchester Castle, Hollytrees House, Colchester War Memorial, former All Saints' Church (Natural History Museum), Firstsite Art Gallery (the Golden Banana), The Minories, the ruins of St. Botolph's Priory, and St. Botolph's Church.

Good evening! And thank you so much for tuning into this narrated video walk around what may well be England's oldest town: Colchester!
Once the capital of Roman Britain, the town's history does actually go back to the era before the Romans invaded. The first mention of Colchester is thought to have come in the year 20 BC, when it was a major settlement for native Celtic tribes. Interestingly, Colchester - known as Camulodunum to the Romans - is also thought to be a possible location of the legendary Camelot Castle!
Thank for making this very interesting and informative video! I wish I could see it in person. ❤
Lovely Colchester a garrison town ❤️

My uncle's used to live in Colchester and in my childhood I used to visit over the summer. Colchester was the first place I visited outside my country and it will always have an important place in my heart. ❤
I was born and raised in Colchester and I still learned a lot from this, thank you!
Thanks for another great walk. The history of Colchester has always fascinated me, your walk and explanations really bought it to life.

Thank you for an incredible tour of Colchester. I had little knowledge of this fascinating town and I love the roman history.
Can't wait to see where you're going next!
Ha ha thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - Colchester is a really captivating place with some incredible history, and beyond the Roman stuff - I didn't know all that much about it before I visited :)
There are many more captivating walks to come on the channel, so do stay tuned!
Well that was really interesting. Colchester has so much to offer and is a real treasure if you're into history and architecture. I briefly visited the town in 2002 but only had an hour or so before I had to continue to Harwich to get on the ferry to Denmark. Thanks for the upload.
Such a fascinating place! Yet another one to add to the list of places to go. I do enjoy your videos immensely. Thank you for narrating them - when I make them larger on the computer or telly the subtitles on the non-narrated videos get chopped off on either end of the screen, and I miss things while trying to read them. Thank you for bringing these intriguing places to us. Cheers from Australia.
Thank you for another fascinating walk. Colchester just reeks of history. Cannot wait to re-visit this amazing city once international air travel, and the World, is back to "normal". Cheers from Oz!
It really is a fascinating town - and with so much spectacularly-preserved history, I loved visiting and discovering it all! I really hope you get the chance to visit again soon - it's a wonderful place as I'm sure you know :)
Thank you so much for watching!
Thankyou for such an interesting walk . We are thinking of moving to the area later this year so its been really helpful.
Great Walk 😊- I've been to Colchester Essex many times .. lovely town and a lovely Walk, thanks 👍 for sharing with us...
Amazing walk 😍 I enjoyed watching it
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you liked the walk :)
I have always been fascinated by history and etymology and the two come together with myth and legend in this place. Camulodunum if the roman style end is removed leaves us with a word which is very close in sound to Camelot. Camul was an ancient British war god and "dun" is Brittonic for a settlement which led to the modern word town. It seems very fitting to have the army there now.
It's a really fascinating story! The Romans' name for the town was indeed likely influenced by the old Brittonic name for Colchester, but I love the thought that it may have been the home of Camelot too :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the walk!
Fascinating, all the times I walked in Colchester and Castle Gardens and was unaware of much of this.
Very interesting indeed, thank you
Most professional historical outlook of the town . I have heard . Awesome 👍
Love your videos. Thanks.

@@LetsWalkUK we have lots of snow. But it's hard to shovel the snow. And walk in it. Looking forward to your next video. Had you ever tried Sudeley Castle. It's a great historical visit and walk. 😀
PLEASE KEARN TO PRONOUNCE CAMULODIUM. Sorry if my spelling is off.I was born in Colchester and very proud of it's history.
Great area for an interesting walk! Didn’t appreciate Colchester had so much to see!
Indeed there's a heap of things to see in Colchester - and we didn't even get to visit all of the town centre's landmarks! The oldest church in Colchester, for example, is located on the south side of the High Street - and dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era around 1020 AD :)
Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the walk!
I love BOTH 💓 Your videos - the narrating ones and the word's in the screen.... brilliant videos thanking you....

Thanks for your excellent Colchester walkabout narration. We visited the town today for the first time and used your route as a basis for our own tour. I’m sure we would have missed much of interest if we hadn’t known where to look. Thanks again, I’ll be sure to keep an eye on your channel.
