The absolute mad man he did it.
😂😂
You're an incredible painter, man. Every technique I watch you use, you use the hell out of it. Thanks for continuing to inspire, JuanHidalgo.
Thanks mate 😘
The TENSION and then the LAUGHTER from that intro, well played XD
Thanks 😘
That intro was the Bomb :D
I love your Vids, you are a Gem in this Community!
Thanks mate 😘
I need to invest in a "SlapChop" now.
All the time I would save!
I love the term SlapChop, because now that it exists, I can look like a proper snob, using Grisaille instead! I mean, I lack talent so very hard, that I cannot even SlapChop properly, but at least I can distinguish myself from the plebeians now by using fancy terms! Everybody wins!
Good thought process
Waiting for Spikeybits to write an article demanding you speak out about your relationship with slap chop and by extension the sham wow.
Lol
Absolute gem of a video. Portraying the mentality and the method amazingly. Preshading with warmer tones works really well. I've got a few more paints on my shopping list. Cheers Juan.
Happy to help
when painting is this fun and easy its hard to stop! finding myself painting more than ever thanks to contrats/speedpaints/xpress really awesome.
Great video!
That's the purpose of paints, making painting fun
Very nice. Having returned to the hobby after a 20+ year hiatus, speed paints (I love army painter) and slap chop was a bit of a revalation. Its Nice to see it done i various ways, I’m especially impressed by the results you obtain by drybrushing with zandri dust instead of gray-to-white. I guess I’ll be trying that on my next batch🤘🏻 keep up the good work - you are an inspiration the middle aged returning nerds😜
thanks mate, as a middle aged retunee myself that means a lot
I've been doing something similar. I don't like black because it's too hard to get color on top of it. So I start by priming my minis with Krylon rattlecan khaki. I then wash it with AP Strong Tone and dry brush white/khaki. I then paint with speedpaints. I haven't tried Xpress because I haven't seen them available in the US yet.
That's a great idea too
Only needed to se the first minute of the video. Now I have all the info… can’t wait to see my results 👍
😂😂
Thanks
Would love to see a series on this method. I learnt a lot from the little differences in how you do under painting. Thanks
There's another one coming on the Sentinel, and then I might do another one showing how much you can improve this using an airbrush in combination with the Drybrushing
Thank you for being like the only person to put the thumbnail we all see in our minds when we hear "Slap-Chop." My brain has been having a Lewis Black level rant at the lack of this in the spread of the name being anti-meme and contradictory in the format most would want to increase algorithmic thumbnails.
Yeah, it bothered me as well
Yeah that's why it's weird no one until now integrated said device or even the memes around it in their videos.
Turns out I'm an innovator
Maybe they fear Vince's bite!? That incident be a factor outside of my punchline.
😂😂
Black lotus has become my favorite of the Xpress paints I've bought. Thinned slightly it works as a black wash and left as is it creates a wonderful subtle blue / black color which shows the highlights much better than Citadel black contrast. It's a very versatile paint.
It's amazing!
Love your vids Juan. Wish you made some more. They're the perfect way to zone out from this gray world. Kudos!
Thanks, I do what I can. Until my Patreon gets to a high enough point I won't be able to live of the channel and make more videos
Amazing video!
I never thought of mixing different brands. I need to get some of those Silver's and highlighters! Thank you
These look fantastic! I'm excited to try the Xpress colours!
Also, I just want to say thank you for your take on Slapchop (the whole idea of it). No creators I actually follow have had any issues with it, but that somehow didn't stop my feeds filling up with people being incredibly angry about it.
Indeed, you will find it's mostly the people with low skills that feel angry or threatened by this.
Don't listen to them, it's an amazing and powerful way of slaying the grey
I can’t wait to see how you painted the large flat panels on the sentinel which are prone to staining. Excellent point about using a WARM color for the pre shade. I almost spewed when I watched the beginning 😂
Thanks mate 😘, coming next week
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Ha just want I asked about - awesome.
Happy to help 😘
For an editor, you’re a brilliant painter.
😂😂😂
Thanks 😘
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Seriously, though. One of the most talented I’ve ever seen. Come here for tips regularly.
Thanks mate, I actually had to learn editing by myself. I always try to make my videos a bit better each time, I'm very proud of this one even if the shots are not 100% well aligned
Lol 😂😂😂😂😂 that intro. I thought for sure that mini was a goner.
Lol, considering how absolutely ATROCIOUS the build quality of that thing is, I think the Slapchop would break before the guard did
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures lol very true.
Juan,
Well I am getting more into your many videos.I am learning so many new things. My desire to paint miniatures is going wild at the moment. I took a few years off painting minis.and focused on Model aircraft. Now that I have found your videos my desire to do miniatures has returned with a vengance. I guess that I need to blame you for this change in my hobby time now. Thank you for that. I need to tell you that I love your sense of humor! I'm laughing a lot during the time that I watch. You have improved my life right now, so thank you for that. I'll be watching you a lot in the future. Have a wonderful day!
Thanks mate 😘
Thanks for the smile. Your intro seen put joy in my heart. Thanks for the video. Hope you have a fun day out there
Thanks, that really means a lot
Slap chop and inexpensive AP speed paints allowed me to finish my Orks and Blueberries as if I had some kind of talent.
It's a great technique
I'm having an absolute nightmare with getting my Iwata HC working properly at the moment. I sit down to paint and end up spending an hour fiddling with/cleaning the brush, and then giving up. It's the biggest obstacle to me actually painting anything. This dry brushing technique might be the very thing to get me back on the horse. Amazing results.
Thanks! I'm with you on that, to me airbrushes are more a pain than anything else. They are amazing indeed when they work but a nightmare when they don't.
Love your videos, would love to see you painting a Cadian soldier with the expanded Xpress range!
Use Khaki Drill for the uniform, Armor Green for the Armour and Mahogany for the leather. The rest is the same and the result should be a close Boxart scheme
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Just got my first Cadian Shock Troops, my first guard, and will try this recipe!
My wife was suffering at the start of the video, hehehehehe, poor miniature!!
Great video as always!!
Any update on the expanded XPress range?? Now that there are "other companies" that are expanding their ranges, it could be great for Vallejo to update with the missing hues and not be left behind ;)
Thanks for your great work!
We are working on it
Congrats, that's the fastest I've ever subbed to someone. You had me with the intro, thanks for sharing your sense of humour!
VIEWS FOR THE VIEWS GOD
SUBS FOR THE SUBS THRONE
Omg this was the best intro to a slap chop vid 😂😂😂 and the ending…mini was amazing!
Thanks 😘
Damn nice job on this. Been having issue with contrast/speed paints not showing up as “bright” as I’d like, but it was due to lack of building from black to white with priming or dry brush. Been seeing on multiple vids building from a black prime->gray/brown->white works so well, instead of just black and white only.
Great vid and tips, I definitely need to build my Vallejo xpress range, but am tapped on funds at the moment
Happy to help
Blue rules 😎 and I won't change your mind because different tastes and opinionsmake the world more fun
Exactly!
Good tip on the flesh, most don't go into that, painted some minis with this technique and the come out too dark since the flesh colored paints are thinner
Exactly, it's important to get the flesh bright and to minimise the black there, otherwise you get a poor result
Wow! That chop was awesome!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks ☺️
Thank you , Juan .
🐺
😘
Great opening! Still laughing!
Thanks 😘
These are magic in a bottle!
And no wonder the master could make the best of it! 😎
Thanks
That opening sequence is everything!
Thanks ☺️
Just bought the "Cadia Stands" army set. Now I know how to go about painting it up. Thanks, Juan!
Happy to help
AWESOME! Ive only been using Valejo Xpress as a wash. Cant wait to try this style! What Ive been looking for!!
Awesome! Happy to help
truely incredible paint job, i cant wait to try it.
Thanks
What a superb introduction!
Thanks ☺️
Nicely done, your models look amazing
Thanks
I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who thought of "The Slap Chop" Chopper. 😀 Great video! Thanks Brother!
Thanks 😘
This method is great! Has really helped me get over wanting to match the box art....and develop my own technique and always learn something new in ever video....Gracias Compa!
Gracias a ti guapetón 😘
Ha! Awesome shit. Vince and Steven would be proud to see this.
:)
Thanks
This answered a lot of my questions about the range. I paint historicals and was wondering how this would work for WW2 miniatures (lots of khakis, camo greens, etc).
Yes, and with mixing a bit you can manage to produce mostly all the hues you will need. With that being said, we are expanding the range to 60 paints and I specifically asked for a set of WW2 inspired colours
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Cool, I might hold off for that then.
I highly recommend you get some of the hues right now, Lizard Green, Plague Green, Wasteland Brown ara amazing, the new colours might take a while to come out
The best intro I’ve seen so far this year! You got me good!! Thank you for the top quality content videos and have a wonderful weekend all!
🙌🏼🌞 Maestro Hidalgo 🐝💨💨
Thanks mate 😘
Best slap chop I’ve seen
Thanks ☺️
After a couple of years of seeing you use the Raphael brushes I finally went and got a few.....I wish I had done that sooner because they've put everything i've used previously to shame and then some. I use a size 1 mostly as that's what works for me but man using contrast and washes did not have the effect I was expecting, these things take it like a champ. Definitely become my go to brushes! Still not going near metallics with them, that definitely worries me lol
Glad you liked them!!
Excellent. I think that a common mistake for beginners in general is "I am new, I will use cheap stuff". Using the highest quality you can afford is so worth it! I learned this in canvas painting. Using cheap paint is super difficult and professional paint is so nice.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thankyou for getting me onto awesome brushes!!
@marcbowling6451 yeah getting atleast one really good brush that's not going to break the bank is definitely the way to go. I pretty much only use my Raphael brushes now besides a over used Scale 75 brush for metallics and cheapo ones for texture paint and when I bother to use oils or enamels. I got back into the hobby with a handful of the citadel paints from around 2015 and some vallejo paints before being bought one of the big sets of Army Painter paints and some of them are still great but a lot of them were a chore to use and I think I learnt a lot more from them then the previous lot. Now I swear by Vallejo and AK 3rd gen paints and use a mix of washes and contrast paints when needed from Army Painter and Citadel. Is a lot of paint to keep track of but it's definitely helped going the way I have with it
get some good synthetic brushes for metallics. D' artisan shoppe brushes are decent and are around 20 bucks for a set.
I wish I could get my hands on these.
Yeah, global supplies are hard. They will get there
What an opener!!
Thanks
Great content, saw these minis on Instagram and now how you did them, very cool, by far the best slap chop tutorial I've seen, thank you 🙌🏻
Thanks
Thank you for the recommendations!
😘
Another amazing intro! you brighten the dull days mate, and inspire me to pick up the brush
Thanks, that means a lot
Great video, love to see the rest of the painting of this group especially the big one, great stuff as always.
Coming soon
I got the full set, but when I have the choice i very much prefer my Speedpaints (vallejo fist colour choices are rly strange). The vallejo range is a nice supplement though because of some quite unique colours.
You can blame Giraldez for that. We are already working on more
Great video - I liked the idea of the zandri dust under painting rather than just grey
I think it's important to think about what final results you want to choose your underpainting colour
The framed photo of Vince in the background is a funny touch!
I'm so happy I bought that digital frame!
I'm so happy I bought that digital frame!
"because I am a psychopath" - Ha! You're the man! Love your videos so much! Because you've been such an amazing creator to watch use the Citadel contrast paints I would love to see a video from you talking about which Vallejo contrast paints you would encourage those of us with only the Citadel line to run out and pick up first, and maybe talk about whether you plan to transition your use of contract mostly over to Vallejo going forward? Thanks!
I won't transition, I will use Contrast exclusively for the Eavy Contrast series, and I will mix for the rest
I adapted your 'eavy Contrast technique on my Khagra's Reavers with a drybrush of Vallejo Ivory. I really love this range! Superb coverage, great price, really looking forward to them expanding the range!
We are already working on it, it's going to be massive and very exciting
Would love to see more xpress painting that experiment with the undercoats! Think I'm gonna paint up my Wargame Atlantic Landschenkt Ogres like the guard here!
Awesome
A miniature painting god. Thanks a lot for the detailed explanations, it really helps us nee to the hobbie to understand better these techniques and the reason for some of the colour choices. Please do more of these videos without airbrush!
I have no videos using the Airbrush and although I might do some, it's never going to be something I use in all videos like others
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Perfect, keep up the excellent work! I ordered today the complete set of Xpress paints, looking forward to painting with them. Thanks for your contribution.
Thanks for watching 😘
the best technique with the best painter. can'T go wrong. Except of our heads to explode
Thanks mate 😘
Hello , just checking if you got my messages and the info you asked for , another amazing video .......thanks again
No idea what you are talking about sorry can you be more specific?
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures thought I replied , weird I pm you on messenger , thanks
Great vid, I can't wait to try this scheme 😀
Thanks Heather 😘
Hey just wondering what dark Gray for the fatigues be ideal. Because id like to add a grimdark feel to my guardsmen. The Green flack armor looks fantastic.
I ended up buying 12 Xpress paints after watching your videos :) I look forward to more of your amazing Xpress work. Great tip about model air silver I'm guessing it's thinner than my vallejo model silver which I find is hard to do highlights because its thick and drys fast.
Thanks 😘
Late to the party but I've just picked up the Vallejo Xpress set thanks to this video. The finish and the colours look great and I cant wait for the range to expand.
I noticed from the comments you would do a more traditional black, grey, white drybrush for blue. How would you tackle other colours like red, yellow etc?
Thanks for the fantastic video!
It depends! Depends on what finish you want to achieve, what level of saturation and value, etc
Intro was hilarious.
Thanks mate 😘
IT WORKS
It really does
ooo I wonder if the new vallejo colours eliminated the need for thinning down wasteland brown and using the new bone colour not seen what it looks like yet
It's a different hue but yeah you can use that and not thin it
If i could only like this video twice :D
That was great!
Thanks!
You can always subscribe
That was the best intro ever bro 🤣😂
Thanks 😘
Lovely video, Juan. Thank you for sharing this good quality content.
Hope we'll meet again in person. Let everyone know you're not only a really good painter but a nice person to talk to.
Cheers!
Gracias guapo 😘
Best intro ever! I'm still laughing!
Thanks 😘
The jumpcut jumpscare. Classic!
😂
Just waiting on Element to get the Xpress Color set back in stock
Awesome!
When its going to be in stock again? Please, somebody knows? 😕😭
I wish I could help you, but I can't. I have no inside knowledge at all
First time watching your channel. You get a like just for that opening bit. Nice!
VIEWS FOR THE VIEWS GOD
Great work. Awesome use of slapchop.
Thanks
When the drybrush already looks like battle ready...you're doing it right...😅
😘
For some reason the wasteland brown + xpress medium 1:3 is not giving me that tan color... Maybe I failed at making more under it...
Encontré una caja starter de wh40k en una tienda de segunda mano. Este es el video que necesitaba para motivarme a pintarlas. Gracias 💚
Gracias a ti guapetón 😘
Great vid! It's clear to me Xpress is better that Speedpaints for certain colors! Very excited to try them!
Awesome
Really? Because I see the opposite. These look really bad, I feel like this man's skill made these minis look good and they would have turned out even better with contrast or speed paints instead
you're the best at teaching us how to paint
I try!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures everything seems simple when you explain it so well, and the production value is amazing. Really good job, wish you the best.
Thanks mate, that really means a lot
My go to for 15mm historical for since forever, never called it slapchop though.
It's just a catchy name that got traction. It's funny and easy to remember that's all
I actually think the green for the bedroll might be better for the armour
Do you recommend the Vallejo Xpress paints, please? Are they similar to contrast, what makes them different if so, please? also can they be thinned like contrast, and what would you use for this if so?
I was thinking about picking up the full set of them. I do have some contrast paints already, but a couple of friends told me to pick up this set. they are not the most advanced painters though, so I always like to shop around for advice from people who understand the medium more.
I first got into using contrast through your Death Guard video. The style and the effect were exactly what I was looking for. It also has given me the confidence to now try making my own glazes and painting in this way, as it seems to be the most advanced way to do your colours.
If these xpress paints will help me get glaze-like effects in less time though, they are definitely something I would like. I definitely think you've pulled off some great stuff with them... for example painting vehicles with the greens. I wouldn't have thought that would have turned out so well with contrast, would it? So are the xpress paints better at covering flat areas, or are the greens just really good?
you got me wanting to paint Imperial Guard, just off how you can do that glazing style of painting in a really short amount of time. I mean you could go further with it than in the video by using thinner coats and adding more colouration, browns and stuff for dirt. I can certainly see it being a very time saving way to paint.
Thing is I was thinking about getting some scale 75 paints as they're supposed to be one of the best to thin into glazes. so do I get a nice selection of those or do I get the vallejo xpress instead.
Ideally I'd like both, but buying both at once might be too much. I don't know. New tools are always good I guess.
Nice use of the Rosemary & Co brushes Juan. 👍 Might to give the teeny tiny details a go.
Thanks 😘
Hope you and the family are keeping well.
We are thanks for asking mate
Your paintjob is amazing and so your videos!
THANKS 😘
Como lucen tio! Me encantan tus vídeos y me das un montón de items y técnicas para mis minis. Una maravilla!!
Gracias guapo 😘
Ok, now I see what you mean about the Cadian video 😂 Been watching them back in order and they keep improving. Matter of fact, I haven't even opened the pallette yet...🤔
Painting minis is just an excuse to make funny intros
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures You do casual humour well, not many people do. It shows natural wit and you have it in spades. Use it, it's a gift ;)
That's probably the most beautiful thing someone has ever said to me.
I'm going to tell my wife so she knows I have options.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures 🤣 "Did you hear that, Martha! I might even get a dog too! I'ma putting mah foot down!"
this is an amazing tutorial and im using it for my army, the only thing is that mixing black lotus and copper brown 1:1 gets me a different, more ugly brown. I don’t know why
did... did you buy that slapchop just for that 1 minute intro? what a madlad
I did and it was surprisingly expensive.
Unlike other creators I commit to my jokes with my wallet
Dignificas la técnica Slap Chop, gran trabajo!!
Gracias! Es una gran técnica que con un poco de cuidado puede dar grandes resultados.
That intro stressed me out so much, very well done :D
It's the magic of cinema
omg the intro ! i m dead ! ahahaha
Thanks ☺️
Please do old style imperial guard 8th cadian scheme too with older guard models.
I doubt I will but you never know
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Would be great. there are 20 years worth of old guards in circulation and they are still considered superior to new ones due to old habits and non mono pose customizable bodies. 07 thank you for replying.
Next level editing :'D
Thanks
Maybe a stupid question, but everytime I use gloomy violet of the new express colours, it's not really working on any flatter surface. I wanted to paint the cloak of a custodes with it, but it just won't stay where I want it. Like it pools in patches but doesn't cover tje the surface at all. And where it pools it just dries extremely glossy.
That's weird, what are you using it over?
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures black undercoat with ivory and white drybrushed over it. Black from Vallejo, ivory and white from AK.
Oh yeah, we've seen that Contrast in general and Xpress in particular don't go well over AK paints for some reason, they behave weirdly and can cause the paint to even split and dry glossy. That is more noticeable on larger, flatter surfaces.
Try to do a layer of Matte varnish over them and see if it keeps happening
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures huh damn, trying out with citadel paints next time. Weird, that this happens only with AK.
Might happen with another paints but the ones we've tested so far, only AK.
Give Citadel a try and see it is goes better, I'm honestly interested in the outcome of this
