- John Aldridge reflects on his early years in professional football, which started by signing for Newport County from South Liverpool in 1979. The forward spent just under five years at Somerton Park, scoring 87 goals and winning the Welsh Cup along with reaching the quarter-final on the European Cup Winners' Cup.
In 1984, Aldo moved to Oxford United where he scored 90 goals in 141 games across three seasons which saw The U's promoted two years in a row from Third Division to First Division as well as winning the League Cup in the 1985/86 season.
In 1987, the scouser's dreams came true as his beloved Liverpool paid £750,000 for his services to replace Ian Rush.
Aldo was speaking to Tommy Martin for our Sport Stories: John Aldridge episode.

I am long time Oxford UNITED supporter remember the very first time, Johnny Aldridge walked in to the Manor ground like it was yesterday A brilliant player a lot of happy memories and what a brilliant team OXFORD was at that time David Langan. I’m almost in tears right in this Billy Hamilton, Brigsy shots, Jamie Smith, Morris Evans. Thanks for the memories. 🇺🇦❤️🇺🇦❤️🇺🇦❤️🫶🫶🫶🍺🍺🇺🇦OUFC
Thanks super Jonny Aldo for everything. You, Dave Langan, Trevor Hebberd, Shotton & Briggs, Les Phillips, Billy Hamilton and Saunders. Such a great Oxford team.
Happy days mate. I remember watching Ray Houghton making his debut in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool. How much ground did Houghton cover in 90 minutes ? Awesome.
That fwd line of Barnes Beardsley & Aldo is up there with Mo Sadio & Bobby.Loved & love John Aldrigde.❤️.YNWA
No one ever mentions Aldo's part in Liverpool winning their only FA cup and league double in 1986. He and his Oxford team mates beat Everton with a late goal in April, that we needed to push on and overtake them to the title
That record of progression of the clubs he played him was due in large part to him and i wonder how many players can show this on there CV or resume, very few i'd say!! he was a special player. ..i remember john asking irish manager to just get him onto the pitch he will win it for them. That sums him up he's one of those rare character who's belief is so passionate and real there presence in the box makes defenders nervous and if they get a chance they'll score and things tend to open up for them.
Im not a LFC fan, but love Aldo's passion and he wears his heart on his sleeve, brilliant stuff.
Brilliant stuff.
Kenny really messed up selling Aldo still baffles me to this day, no one on the red side ever wanted him to leave
Haha im a massive liverpool fan born in preston and the stories my great grandad told me about tom finney i would listen to for hours my family helped to build the church he got married in emanuel church preston
Wow. Great story
There was a time when you would have backed Oxford to beat any team
Oxford legend, both on the pitch and in the local night club Bogarts😂
You definitely never broke our hearts with the penalty miss Aldo. The Beardsley poorly judged offside goal did that . Every young LFC player/fan should sit and watch these stories. Passion and dedication at a different level 🙌👍⚽️
It wasn't disallowed for offside. Ref blew the whistle for an earlier foul on Besrdsley but Beardsley played on and scored
