Solid review, I agree on the sprawl of stuff for the heroes. Especially the archer and wizard with spells. I’ve switched to using the app on an iPad instead of the character sheets. I also use a life counter/dial for tracking current HP instead of the tokens. I do that for so many other games that use different value tokens to track things.
I’m looking forward to the changes they will be doing for the app to improve things with the expansion on the new KS campaign. Arkada is also very communicative and open to feedback and ideas from the community. A few highlights are: tabs and shortcuts for things like searching, monsters, etc, character sheets that update automatically and can be accessed during quests, and support for tablets.
I agree the story is okay but nothing mind blowing. It does enough to tie the quests together but it won’t be what keeps people playing. The loot and trying out cool builds does that.

Thanks Will. Another solid review from my Dungeon Crawler Guru.
Tempted. But the $300(CAD) just to get started is a bit steep.
I signed up to get more info about their “Journey Pledge” with standees instead.

Thank you for your honest review.
I’ve watched your content on regular basis since Omicron Protocol review. I purchased it without regret and your recommendation had tilted the scales. I appreciate your opinion especially when it comes to Dungeon Crawlers. The reviews capture the essence of the game, containing your personal thoughts without dragging out.
This game is on my radar for a purchase this month as well as OrcQuest Warpath is. But the budget for the rest of the month covers only one.
I was afraid to hear some drawbacks in terms of app, and since it’s the engine of the game they could be the pain in neck. Unfortunately when creators and developers decide to use the “third part” solution like app, it’s the whole new challenge to curb.
    Have you tried OrcQuest Warpath?

Thanks for the kind words! I think apps can be an amazing way to streamline games and communicate story. If they are done right.
Regarding orcquest. I did not get that one, and I've heard it's a lot of fun, but I also haven't seen many people playing it recently . Kind of fell off the radar. Not sure why

I agree with everything you said. It reminds of better version of Warhammer Quest. A lot of little glitches with the app. Have not got back to the game. Trying to complete to two other campaign games Oathsworn and Kinfire.
Thank you, great review as always. If you get a chance take a look at is Core Space First Born another hidden gem. Played my first game with a friend and loved it my poor wallet . My gaming room can't take another game lol. 👍

@@HungryGamerReviews@josetvares How do you like Erune compared to Kinfire? I'm getting Kinfire soon, but wonder if I should get this too, it looks really nice. Or should I pass and get Wamder: Cult of Barnacle Bay instead? ;D

      @HungryGamerReviews  9 месяцев назад +1

@@ledpowzwell barnacle Bay is great fun. Dice tastic.
Erune is more strategic with the way dice are used.
Kinfire is a very low luck strategic game.
I have playthroughs of both Kinfire and wander on the channel (warning the wander ones are old old). So not my best work

I played the first scenario on Essenspiel, and I really enjoyed it. The interaction with the app is quite cool, and the heroes powers are fun to use. I regret not getting myself a copy of the game in the occasion.

Another thing is that being the Shadow Master seems like actually a very fun experience, when compared with other games that has this kind of mechanics. He is also upgrading himself with new powers to use, and can actively go after the players.

You can pick up copies of the base game on their site and there is a KS campaign for an expansion going on right now. You can also get a copy that includes both the base and expansion. They are also adding more stuff for the MoS to give them even more to do.

I have had one eye on this for ages but does the App actually require an internet connection to play? If so, a board game that requires an internet connection is a level of digitalisation I don’t need.

    • @HungryGamerReviews

I did not test it without being connected, but I don't think so.

    • @Malgamus

It does require an internet connection. Even loading a quest then going offline does not work.

Thanks for confirming. That's a pity as, if Arkada stop supporting the App one day, the game becomes useless (like online only video games). @@Malgamus

For some reason my previous comment is not showing up :( So apologies if there are duplicates.
What are your thoughts between this and HeroQuest re-release? It's almost 300$ to get Erune expansion plus core set on the kickstarter page. That is a huge ask. You can get the HeroQuest and all the expansions for less than that (ridiculous amount of content.)
What would make me play this instead of a tried-and-true dungeon crawler like HeroQuest? I do think there are some fun ideas here and a lot of potential, I wish it wasn't such a big money commitment. Also where are the item art and cards?!

    • @Malgamus

I can chime in here. I played the OG HeroQuest as a kid and have the new edition along with a few expansions for it. I also picked up the Heroic edition for Erune last year from their webstore after missing the first KS. I too was looking for a game like HQ. I also did a comparison on the HQ subreddit for the two. I’m also already a backer on the new campaign and looking forward to the new content and changes they have planned.
Erune was touted as HQ 2.0 in some of the original marketing for the first campaign. It is clearly inspired by HQ in many ways but does it’s own thing more than being a clone. You are right on the price being higher than HQ.
I like that Erune has more going on with the combat than base HQ. Characters gain skills from a large pool and can advance to an advanced class over the campaign. That is in addition to gaining new loot like in HQ. There is also a lot more loot available. The game also gives you rules on how to move monsters in coop/solo rather than the app doing it for you. The app for HQ just pushes the monsters forward and is easy to cheese if you want to. Speaking of the app, Erune has randomly generated searching and you can get different events depending on which character triggers them. For HQ, we ended up just using the app, dice, character sheets, and treasure cards and left the rest in the box as it was just moving pieces around on the board to mimic the app and felt like double the work. If I play it again, it will have to be with a human Zargon. Erune plays well in either mode and you can play the monster intelligently to make the game. That said the app is optional for HQ where it is required for Erune even with a human Master of Shadows and that app requires an internet connection to work.
HQ is great because you can homebrew rules to make it more like what you want. Erune will have the ability to make custom quests and you can submit item ideas if you want but it does not have the same level of customization as HQ.
I think both games are great and worth owning. They each have their own positives and negatives but I think fans of HQ or dungeon crawlers in general would enjoy Erune. It is not perfect but I see the potential in the system and I have faith in Arkada to continue to hone it into a gem as time goes on.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review of the game. Everything you have said is why I am very interested in this game. It looks like it has the best things I like about HeroQuest and takes them to the next level.
The only things that are giving me pause about Erune so far, besides the very high entry price, is:
      1) App Requirement : Requiring the app even with a DM is a huge step-back, more so if it requires internet access. The HeroQuest app is great, works offline, and you don’t need to use it if you have a player willing to DM. I am also not a fan of the robotic voice of Erunes app, it is immersion breaking. The voice acting on the story scenes is fantastic, however. But the future app updates in the kickstarter video look very promising.
      2) No Item/Equipment Cards: I love when board games like this have beautiful art on their item/equipment cards. Helps with the immersion and its nice having a physical representation of the item with its description.
I am also following Dungeon Saga Origins, another HeroQuest inspired game that is also heavily inspired on HeroQuest. Have you heard/played/know anything about it? Unfortunately you cannot longer pledge on its kickstarter.
