What you have taught me is so simple. I have found what I came for the living temple of God in my own heart. That is the biggest miracle of all.
That is the true miracle! Isn't it? Fantastic and well said!
@@ForrestKnutson In the Autobiography of a Yogi, it is mentioned that Kriya Yoga helps in removing our Karma. How does Kriya Yoga "burn up " our Karma? How does the process work?
@@gem7624 by canceling the projections of the limbic system. It was Yukteswar's invention to correlate this with a manner of years and astrology. In the original explanation it's only about getting to a state of liberation. Great question!
@Jamie Redwood practice heart rate variability, as Forrest teaches in his videos, mentally chant om in the chakras with feeling and awareness, think of anyone or anything that you love the most in life, deeply associate that love within your heart, continue to do the above over and over again. Recognize we are in a process of purifying the heart. You are not blocked. Every being loves and is love. We just need to deepen and widen our love. Deep love is bliss. I hope that helps.
@Jamie Redwood Watch all Forrest's videos.
Forrest teaches the kriya yoga of Lahiri Mahasaya, one on one. Go to vedickriyayoga.com under ordained, any teacher there can initiate you.
I’m fascinated! I’ve read the Autobiography of a Yogi (several times) but never the other books quoted. Hope can have them delivered to Brazil. 🤞🏼
thank you very much for this tremendous amount of work and self-stidy material that you have collected for us.
It is a treat to watch you videos, I am really blessed. Thank you for this insightful video on kriya and specially explaining the chapter in detail. God bless you... my pranam.
Thank you Manjunathgangadhar! My pronams to you, too! 🙏🙏
Hell yeah, this is AMAZING. What a book list! Just ordered Baba Stories.
Awesome, Nehemiah!
Such an important video, thank you so much for putting this together!
Thank you Joshua!
Glad you clarified about the Fantastical stories in yogananda's book
I am so grateful for your existence and the work you do. You have been helping me cope with a lot of stress that would have otherwise turned my day towards a downward spiral. Thank you.
Oh my goodness. I'm so glad that my videos are helpful in a difficult time. There's two videos you might like especially. One is called meditation to the 4th power. The other is called disassociation. Not that disassociation should be a constant exercise but it can be great to have a little break. Whatever you're going through, I wish you every luck and every success.

Articulate. Smart. Well edited. Concise. On Point. Thank you (again). I read Autobiography of a Yogi years ago and started re-reading it last year (but didn’t finish). Got frustrated because the Kriya yoga sounded so intriguing but wasn’t happy with anything I found online regarding it. Lovely that you put all the time into creating these videos. Seriously, totally lovely.
I'm so glad 🤩🙏
Thank you so much. Knowing & understanding the history behind study material is extremely helpful ❤
You are surely enlightened being 🙏
Awestruck, words escape me, so grateful
Wonderful, Diane!
Finally a good explanation!
Dear Forrest! Thank you for your brilliant work about Kriya. I got initiation from one disciple of Paramahamsa Hariharananda. It helped me much to understand what Kriya Yogis want. They want to find a short way to be in Samadhi. For me it is necessary to immerse into matter, this means to be full incarnated here on our earth. I try to bring spirit consciousness into the energy of the body and into all our cells. So it is possible to scoop the inner light out of the center of our heart and let it radiate. This energetic process helps to be fulfilled from higher conceseness and be embedded in it. For me it wouldn't make sense to incarnate here on earth to find a quick way to leave. Coming in resonance with the long deep flowing breath helps also to be fully aware, inside of our self. Excuse my bad english!
Beautiful Hans! You've successfully escaped a yogic trap which is to not integrate with your life. Beautiful practice Hans, and thank you so much for sharing it with us!

I'm currently reading the book but comment about fantastical stories has dampened the spirit. Unlimited potential to feeling a bit unmotivated. Did you know the stories were blown up when you 1st read the book or were you afforded 1st the wonder of mystery and possibility ?
Your talk of carbon reflects the principles of buteyko breathing although they refer specifically to carbon dioxide as needed for oxygen to land where it needs to. Very validating for me. I'm just beginning and having major trouble with the breathing because I cough and choke every time I even attend to the breath. I will keep showing up until it changes. I also have some concern because my heart beat often moves into bradycardia. I'm convinced, though, that this is the path I choose. Thank you so very much. Your teachings are making yoga safe for me which it has not been in the past. My gratitude if boundless!
Thank you for this wonderful introduction. Some of the books I read already with greatest delight, the others will follow asap. Only whenever I read a book about yoga or watch your or other related youtube videos, I recall what my first yoga teacher told me. yoga is 1% theory and 99% practice. so instead of listening and watching, I could meditate or do kriya... hard choice :)... and your great videos make it even harder 🙏🏻🙏🏻
That's so true! The yogi, more than any philosopher, is the man sitting where the rubber meets the road.

Amazing video!! Very informative as usual.
I recently started the wim hof method and that method shows to improve immunity and the cold baths helps deal with everyday stress.
But it seems to me it could have opposite effects and the slow long breaths is what's essential here. I shall read up on this. Thank you.
Thank you Nishanth! ... Yes, the Wim Hof breath is what I classify as a Purging Breath. It has value, but only when combined with HRV, and should only be used sparingly for lasting benefits.
Simply classic Forrest 👌

Fantastic video. Tq
Thank you!
Thank you for an amazing wealth of information!
Thanks for the reading list.
Since I am very partial to Paramahansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi, I began my reading with Dasguptaji's book on Kriya Yoga.
I'm glad I did (just got started less than one third of the way). To me, it is like an enhanced Autobiography of a Yogi. It talks very lovingly about Priya Nath's life before he became Swami Sri Yukteshwar. (there are many vignettes of Priya Nath's life. I loved it!) Then it delves into his book "Holy Science".
Next on my reading list: re-read Holy Science, then move on to Kriya Stories. :-)
That's great!
:That was indeed overwhelming! :)
Sucheta! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Really useful video. Kudos to your knowledge and eloquence.
Being an avid student of yoga myself, I notice the Kriya number comparison to not necessarily indicate number of kriya but length of practice as per the yoga samhita, e.g. 12 kriya/pranayama = 1 pratyhara. 12 pratyhara = 1 dharana, etc. Looking forward to see more of you.
Thank you Visti! 🙏
Amazing Video. Spiritual Geeta By Sri Bhupendranath Sanyal (Disciple of Sri Lahiri Baba) also great. It has 3 volumes.
Yes, I love them. I just did a video on them.

As for the Whim Hoff ,cleaning breath, there are short term bennefits, some guy did a test after 20 minutes of fast breathing,he raised the Ph from 7.4 to 8.4, that is amazing,is good to know that we have a tool for killing the bacteria etc
could you maybe share this video ? thank you very much.

Wonderful Tyler! Yes, that's the one! The golden ring.

Someone sent it to me, and I changed the contrast a bit to highlight the brightness of the gold as I've seen it. Great one, isn't it?
@@ForrestKnutson Oh right, yeah it's the closest one that looks like the ring I've seen. Unfortunately I haven't seen it for quite sum time now, still doing the Kriya practices an hoping to experience it again.
This is where I wish I'd kept my old meditation diaries. I would go long stretches without seeing it, and then all of a sudden, it would show up. I'm sure it will for you as well. Gradually, it became more and more consistent.

When I was doing Wim Hof method I was awake all day long , after Kriya im sleepy and tired.
Hi Forrest! I can’t tel you how grateful I am for your channel, I have learned so much from you. In addition to that your grate attitude and joy are a great example of how a Kriyaban should be. On the other hand I can’t tell you how much it took me by surprise and even saddened me what you said about the re-editing of the Autobiography of a Yogi, I really wasn’t aware that they had made so many changes. Do you recommend the amazon versions that say 1946 re-print, are they trustworthy?
Hi Victor! I'm so happy to hear that you're getting benefit! That's fantastic. ... Yes, there were many small changes over time. Unfortunately we can't read it before it got fantastical, however reading the 1st version can be refreshing. This is one, or one that says 1st edition: amzn.to/2TWWuIj
Thanks Forrest! In your experience/opinion as an ex monk, are the stories in the autobiography too difficult to believe?
The fantastical ones. It's hard to say exactly where to draw the line. I'll be doing a video specifically on Babaji, as seen from Lahiri Baba's diaries.

Dear Sir, I want to practice Primitive Kriya Yoga, can you recommend me a good book? My spoken English is not good, so I can only use translation software to read books to learn
Hi Forrest,
Are you aware of the book Kriya Secrets Revealed by J.C. Stevens? I am using this book as an instructions manual for learning the Kriya practices, which Stevens claims are the original way Lahiri taught them. What are your thoughts on this book?
I got confused at 13:28 how does pranayama introduce carbon by lengthening the breath? Doesn’t it just reduce the oxygen so it doesn’t overwhelm the already low levels of carbon? (Because your not moving)
Hi! Thank you for the great video. Please advise where can I find the Link to the 1st version of Autobiography of Yogi?

Thanks!
Thanks. I wanted to ask you something. I wanted to devote the rest of my life towards awakening my kundalini and experiencing deep meditation. What do you suggest would be the best way to go about it?
I would follow HRV Breathing here, and take my trainings at MeditativeMellows.com that's you best chance of success. I also teach the original Kriya as taught by Lahiri Mahasaya. But only one on one and in person.
If u don't recommend hyperventilating then how do u explain holotropic breathing,it seems to help release trauma.
Are there levels or stages of Kriya? What would be the cosmic state to put it in TM terminology.
There are 7 levels of Kriya in my lineage. The cosmic State could be samadhi or you could be referring to kaivalya, the final freedom. I've been writing about these states on patreon.
No link sir….. to read the book…
Hey Forrest, I have a quick, short question. Would focusing on the breath sensations at the nose/beneath nose tip off-cushion (while not doing formal practices) automatically cause HRV breathing? Thank you. :)
You mean the 5 Breath States? It's possible. A better way to ensure HRV during the day is to just take long breaths. The five best states are best used as a tool to track the deepening progress of your HRV. Great question!
@@ForrestKnutson Thank you! i'll try to do that.
I wish to learn about yamas and niyamas, and how to implement it and how to not get sad when we fail to abide by them. I will be so deeply grateful if you can share the knowledge in the same. :)
Hi Diya, I cover this in my book, "Hacking the Universe," especially in the section on the 8 Meannesses of the Heart. I think you would really enjoy that. It's available to download from Amazon, and very cheap as a digital book.
@@ForrestKnutson Thank you 。◕‿◕。
When I read the autobiography I never thought of the stories as fantasies. People living in India and especially Bengal know of these time tested saints and mystics as well as their experiences which layman do not comprehend. But it is a bit disheartening to know that the versions were exaggerated than original.
Hi Forrest ! Can i learn Kriya yoga with you?
2:13 Do You Have All Eight Now?
You Could Make A Short Reel About This!
Forest, is he talking about doing our "kriyas" as in the kriya technique I was given?? I understand there are different kinds of kriyas.
Yes he is.
What is one kriya : lifting the breath once up the spine and down again? Or is there some other unit?
That's correct.
Dear Forest, I have taken initiation by instructor from Paramhans Prjnanand ji kriya organization. However I donot see any progress except I realy like to do this. My sleep is not improving deep sleep is only 30nins or less. So I didn't do it for 3 days just to check and my deep sleep came to 1.5 hrs. Is my kriya not right, can you guide me please.🙏🙏🙏🙏
Have you heard of Guru Shailendra Sharma. He is also the deciple of Lahiri Mahasaya lineage.
Yes, I have. 🙏
What are you thinking about the breathing exercise Wim-Hof-Method, propagated by Wim Hof (AKA the ice man)? Actually I love that to prepare my self before I have been tipping into cold water.
Would you say, that this a a kind of pranayama, too?
It is a pranayama, but the overemphasis on hyperventilation really worries me for some people. Many young healthy individuals will be able to manage it, but the older, or those with troubles, will find it very draining. When the mix is correct it will work, but there is so much chance for the mix to be off, and the whole project becomes a waste. I much prefer HRV (of course!), as a reliable and effective pranayama.
@@ForrestKnutson What do you mean when you say "manage it"? Just discovered your channel, very interesting stuff! edit: just tried your hrv technique video and I think I get it lol)
Forrest when I do hrv at the end of the outbreath I feel a strong sensation in my diaphragm and in the chest. It feels like a mix of being in love and seeing that person and being startled or scared. Is this normal. It feels kind of good but im afraid im stressing out my heart or something.
That's beautiful. See if you can OM into the scared part of the feeling, and let that part of it settle down. You might also OM mentally into the other 6 chakras. I have a video called How to Find Your Chakras mentally. This will help to lesson any negative projections, so that they don't come up and "startle" you and you only feel the very loving and blissful part.
@@ForrestKnutson Thank you 💚💚💚
Respected sir I have chronic backache back pain when I do kriya yoga pain increases what is solution !!?
Try adjusting your sitting position until you can sit comfortably. I like to wedge a pillow at the sacrum. You might also use chiropractic treatment and see if you can ease your back into a better condition. Glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can also help the joints.
Forrest if so many things that we experience happen in the brain and in the nervous system what do you think is it that survives bodily death?
Yogis call it the indestructible Atman. Usually we call it the soul. The brain is just the place we experience it.

What’s the best way to figure the differences from Yoganandas kriya vs “original” Kriya? Is there some merit to Someone of “Realization” changing the technique?- are they not qualified?
Thank you Forrest! OM
That's a great question, and an important one. ... I believe Yogananda was well intentioned, and thought the original too difficult for Americans. ... There are a couple reasons it's not okay, and those come directly from Lahiri Baba's mouth, where he warned his students, in writing, that "Kriya yoga without OM Japa is tamasic," or leading to negative results. ... As for how to find out, if you could email me at thatyogiguy@gmail.com
I have bought most of your book recomendations. ..letters to kriya disciples is not available in Amazon India for more than a year..

There is one more student of Mahavtar babaji other than Lahari Mahashya....I will be learning from him the Technics from and post you the experience
The experience was sublime....this master could breathe through me....it seemed that I was sitting in front of Shri Yukteshwar himself...so blessed to have him as my Guru....
And where is your training centre located?
My students are private, so I don't have a center. My students come and visit me, I initiate them (which is traditional), and then they return home and I guide them over the phone, mostly.
....does the heart rate variability slowing down of the breath actually alkaline the body and create greater health as well?
Absolutely. Imagine your car pulled up to a stop sign. Or parked in your garage. you would never continuously rev the engine because you would know that that would shorten the life of your car. Putting your body into HRV resonance is akin to put in your car into a low idle state. Which will always improve your health.
I am thinking the holding of the breath within the Maha mudra practise would also increase this alkalinity?
@@eaglelight108 yes that's correct
When the eyes are looking up at the spiritual eye, what should the mind be thinking?
Ideally, the "words" mind should not be thinking, and the awareness should be feeling into the cave, with an expanded attitude.
Would you consider Yoga Breath of Fire a hyperventilation practice?
Yes, but you can lengthen the out-breath so that you can practice it longer. Imagine a deep sea free-diver before they dive. That's the breathing you're doing in Hyperventilation Breathing. Nothing wrong with it, but it is only meant to be used for a short period of time.
Forrest Knutson Thanks! I’ll try the modified BOF and be mindful of my hyperventilation pranayamas 🙏

Haven't u read this book Purana Purusha Shyama Charan lahiree ? Biography of Lahiri Mahasaya
Yes I have. I think I mention it in this video.
Hello Forrest .. a beginner's question - when the book talks about offering the prana to apana and vice versa .. it says the body decay is prevented. Why is that all the yogis have their bodies decayed including Lahiri ji and students. Is it that they do not care .. in many other hath yogic books there are references to having a youthful body by following specific practices but then people following them are getting old. What may I be missing?
Neil, that's a great question. It is talking about arresting decay in that moment. In the Autobiography of a Yogi (AY) Yogananda mentions that the yogi eventually sees the breath as a product of his (word oriented) mind. That work in the background is like the idle in your car. You've stopped, but the engine keeps humming. By entering the Right brain, that hum slows way down, and so decay becomes suspended in that moment. ...Then of course the yogi comes out of that state. Does that make sense? So, the overall life span of the yogi is, we hope, prolonged.
@@ForrestKnutsonthank you ... can we say the same applies to other yogic techniques (usually Hath yogic) that talk about the practitioner becoming 16 year old or even 8 year old in terms of digestion and hard body.. or are they just metaphors .. though Baba ji and many other Nath yogis seem to have attained it.
I think many overstate their claims. Which makes sense when you are in it. You feel the effect so strongly, it's easy to become overwhelmed. That being said, many of these techniques are very powerful and effective in promoting longevity. I would add nutrition and anti-oxidants to the mix for a more powerful formula.
@@ForrestKnutson So kind of you to put the verses in perspective. Thank you for adding clarification to my beginner's question :-)

Hi Rebecca, they are below the video. YT has made it a little harder to find them. You may need to click on "comments" to see the links.
Excellent video! I really enjoyed it and it answered questions I had on my mind. When I do Om Japa, I can't feel the prana along my spine, why is that? I can't feel it going up and down when imagining it so. However, when I do Sadhguru's Shambhavi meditation, I feel the prana go from the first chakra all the way to my 3rd eye, although there is a lot of blockage in my lower chakras I feel. But the question I wanna ask is, why don't I feel this with Om Japa? My kundalini is not "awakening" when doing this.
Since I'm short on money right now, are there no miracles in the original autobiography of a yogi? I always thought all the miracles were real because ever since discovering kundalini for myself, nothing surprises me anymore about this world, I've experienced the non physical, so things like Mahiri Lahasaya did like showing his body in 2 different locations at the same time, doesnt surprise me. But are those things false?
Thanks for always answering my long questions haha!
Rasmus great questions!
I see kundalini in a very different light than almost anyone else. I see it as a reflection of the brain. That's what Lahiri Baba's picture of the chakra system is all about. It's all a reflection, and the feeling of energy moving is too. As we preempt the natural processes of these projections, we become more and more aware of what is usually unconscious. That experience is what we call kundalini. So, there's no need to feel it during OM Japa. Let the OM Japa do it's work so that you find yourself in the medulla. That is what it is all about. ...The way I presented this, people may think it's a totally different book. That was a mistake in my presentation. It was already fantastical by the time it was 1st published. ....Yes, the electrical world, and the deep brain world, are totally real! And that is the core truth I was talking about. And it is glorious.
@@ForrestKnutson Wow this is way out and hard to understand. So you are saying that our mind makes up our chakra systems, and that they are not real? And depending on our mindset, our chakra and prana behaves differently? Is the electrical world our physical reality and deep brain our subconscious reality? You have a deep understanding of all this.
@@swedish_sadhguru3854 it gets really deep, doesn't it? It's not that they aren't real, it's just that they aren't a physical thing. They are as real as every other perception you have every day. And they are projected into the body from the brain along the central nervous system. Which includes the parasympathetic and the sympathetic systems. ... so yes, depending on what are we are holding psychologically, that material is what is projected into the chakras.... So if you have a negative emotion, you will find it in one of your chakras. For example if you have heartache that will be in the heart chakra. If you have jealousy that will be in the second chakra. And if you have ambition oh, that will be in the third chakra.
@@swedish_sadhguru3854 the physical and electrical world are very close together, but it is the brain and the Deep states that are found in the brain that is the true reality.
@@ForrestKnutson Thanks for your good explanation! I think I understand it better now. What is the best way, in your opinion, to clear my chakras? I can feel there is blockage from old trauma. I have tried doing Hatha Yoga a few times before, but many positions are impossible to do for me, so im not sure about how much it will do.
Do you have any actual evidence that the stories in AY grew bigger as publishers rejected it? What's your source?
This came from the stories of those who were actually there, as they told me. There's only a few of them left.
Why do we focus on the spine in kriya yoga? what is so special about it?
It is the projections of the limbic brain, which we call chakras, which are so important, and why Lahiri Baba said OM in the chakras is extremely important. Also, the Dorsal Vagal Nerve, but this is taken care of automatically by the breath.
hi, is surya kriya part of kriya yoga?
No the Ishta techniques are not related to the teachings of Lahiri Mahasaya. I have heard from some people that they do enjoy the courses. However it is a different system.
@@ForrestKnutson wow! thanks for responding : )
do you have any videos explaining the ishta techniques? or the differences between the 2 systems? is it ok to mix different yoga systems?

As far as Yogananda's stories getting "bigger and bigger" do you feel that the original text reprint still contains the more fantastical stories? AUM
Yes, even those stories had grown out of proportion. The inner experience is real. Lahiri Mahasaya's kriya, Samadhi, pratyahara, internal Divine guidance, but the outward stories? Not so much.
@@ForrestKnutson Yes, some of those miracles are hard to swallow, but who knows? By the way, you explanation of Yogananda going from publisher to publisher needing to bolster it up does make sense. What are you sources for that analysis?
Yogananda praised Tara Mata repeatedly in early magazines for her efforts in talking with publishers, and talks with old time devotees who knew several of the original editors.
What do you mean "we ought not to take the more fantastical stories too seriously"?
Amazing video though I wouldn’t say he exaggerated the stories due to his very high spiritual level and loa he basically was only surrounded by the most spiritually advanced among use if I recall correctly the publishers said he was a fraud or it wouldn’t do well for an American audience or a mix of the two but great video :)
Thank you, X.
