- Soundman extraordinaire Eric Kerchner and Cameraman Mark Teboe accompany Pennsylvania National Guard in the aftermath of the great blizzard of 1996. Kerchner and Teboe shoot the humvee and hospital sequences. (You can tell this by NOT seeing mic flags in the shots and being able to hear the sounds clearly!) This piece aired on KYW-TV's news magazine Larry Kane's Bulletin. Staff KYW-TV crews shot the other sequences. Interesting that the Isuzu Trooper modified by Eric and Mark with a "state of the art" rooftop camera platform NEVER got stuck in the snow… Can't say that about the military vehicle!!! 30.7 inches (78 cm) of snow fell in Philadelphia, the most of any major city in the storm's path. It was the city's all-time greatest snowstorm, compared to its previous greatest snowstorm which was a "mere" 21.3 inches. Most of those 30.7 inches, 27.6, fell in just 24 hours, a new record for the city for the most snow in 24 hours. The mayor declared a state of emergency, and only police and other emergency workers were permitted to drive on city streets leaving the city to pedestrians.
For three days, city trucks loaded with plowed snow dumped their contents into the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers eventually causing major problems with the natural flow of the rivers. It is a rare occurrence for trucks to "dispose of snow" in the Philadelphia area, since the snowfall amounts typically do not warrant it. However the snow was so extensive, that plowing would cause massive snow piles. City officials had no choice but to resort to hauling the snow to nearby rivers. Disposal of snow became a major issue but temperatures quickly returned to normal and began to quickly clear the snow. This resulted in flooding, when on January 19th, a jet stream disturbance from the Gulf of Mexico caused a rapid melt, followed by thunderstorms, which both brought three inches of rain, and caused the snow to melt 20 inches in one day; or equivalent to 2 inches of rain. Philadelphia saw its worst flooding in twenty years. Damages were estimated to reach $1 billion.

I just turned 22 yrs old during the blizzard of '96. I was stuck on a little side street in Port Richmond, where I lived at the time, for about a week.
This video, reminded me how helpful "neighbors" were. Everyone looked out for one another and helped whoever, whenever they could. That's what I miss most about this era. "it takes a village" and that's how it was. You helped one another. I don't understand why we can't have this way of life again. Sigh ..
my Mom was a dialysis patient and she had the Guard take her to her treatments, I remember her telling me how nice and handsome, caring they were!
I was a 13 year old Black kid living in west philly when this happened. I remember walking on 5 foot tall snow piles from 60th street to 56th street along Chestnut st. [because the City plowed Chestnut street and the mountainous snow was pushed to the sides]. I could look down on everyone shoveling their sidewalk. I never touched the ground.

I lived right outside philly in montco. I was 10 and the plows had made a massive mountain of snow right outside of my house. I feel like I sledded down that hill for months. It took forever to melt

@@KayFabe87i was painting a mental picture on who i am and was at the time. there is nothing wrong with being Black or stating that. it would be no different if i stated that i am also male. because i am. i said nothing wrong. and if that causes an angry knee-jerk reaction from you to come here and confront me about it, then you've got bigger problems.
I lived in Philly when this storm hit. I used to walk to work and after the storm some sidewalks were just narrow enough for one person, with snow on each side taller than me. When I got to the corners, I'd have to climb through snowbanks that went up to my waist.
Was 16 when this storm hit. You wouldn't believe me if I told you how much money I made digging cars out. Good times

I was 16 when this happened to but instead of being outside shoveling snow and playing with my friends I got phenomena and was sick as a dog that whole week but having no school all week made it all worth it haha!

This was the worse for me. I remember being a young teen walking to the corner store cause they dont close for anything in Philly, the store was literally right around the corner and i could not breath walking over all that snow by the time i got home it felt like i was having a heart attack or something. It was so scary.
I was 11 when this happened lived on Frankford Ave and the snow was up to our front porch all I did was just dive out the door. All you could see is top of roofs of cars when said and done
remember it well, live in PA, went to NJ to watch eagles game. a normal 1 hour ride turned to 6 getting back home( and i had 4 wheel drive). could not get to work for almost 1 week. good times
I was in the process of flying back from Tokyo into Toronto and was supposed to catch a connecting flight from Toronto to Philadelphia the next day, but all flights into or out of Philadelphia were cancelled. Good thing I had a previously booked hotel room in Toronto as there were hundreds of people who couldn't fly out of Toronto into any Northeastern US airports for at least 48 hours. Spent the next week trying to shovel my car out of a parking space in South Philly. Fun times.

I live in Delco during this storm and we lost power for a week. Had to sleep with our winter jackets in sleeping bags all in one room with a space heater and the over open. Couldn't even shower cause pipes froze. What an awful time that was.
I was stuck in BWI for three days. I had travelled to Philadelphia for a job interview and was trying to get back home, Cleveland.
This is what the news used to be like. Larry Kane is the resl thing. I had the privilege of meeting & briefly working with him in 2010. He told me I reminded him of John Lennon. The news today would consist of Brian Stelter pontificating about how snow is ‘racist.’ Watching the news back in the 1980s was like spending time with family members. The newscasters were true representatives of the city’s soul. That’s what it was - the city used to have SOUL. I miss the 80s and 90s in Philadelphia, before postmodern marxism took over. I’ll never go back to live there. I might visit just to see it, but Philadelphia as I knew it is gone. I was living in South Philly when the blizzard hit. It was something I’ll never forget.
South Philly native here as well. I share your sentiments exactly. I had moved out of Philly by that time, but I was returning from a trip to Tokyo and caught the original flight out of Philadelphia so I parked my car in front of my mother's house in South Philly. Took a week to dig it out. I would never move back to crime-ridden Philly.
This was the year my daughter had a whole month off.

Was a sophomore in HS. We got a week off of school two weeks after Christmas vacation
I worked the front desk in my building during this and loved my job though it was nasty to deal with for maintenance.
Was a crazy storm had to climb out back window on back porch to dig a passage to be able to open one of my doors. But the Forcasts were way off

Get over yourself, dude.. The Storm hit in January. I just turned 14 on Jan 8th and it was snowing it's hardest on that day. But u don't see me sitting here talking about how God sent me a birthday blizzard as a gift. 😂😂😂🤦♂️
My daughter was one years old and and me and old friend of mine had to walk miles for milk bread eggs and whatever else we needed it was awful
Yep,,,, I remember that storm well,, I spent all night in a Backhoe Moving snow in Buck`s country, at a new home building site
i lived in swphilly then n don't remember any national guard n think they only helped center city ppl!!
If you watch the video, you can clearly see that the National Guard vehicle was being driven through South Philadelphia. It also wasn't the only vehicle in service at the time so they were likely all over the city. If you didn't see any, it's likely because they were specifically rendering service to people who needed medical treatments such as dialysis and not just randomly driving through neighborhoods.
