- Peugeot has revealed an updated 9X8 for the remainder of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship season. The 6 Hours of Imola on April 21st will mark the competition debut of this new chapter for the French car manufacturer.
The FIA World Endurance Championship is the world’s premier international sportscar championship, contested over eight rounds across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. With multiple cars across two categories (Hypercar and LMGT3) all on track at the same time, the WEC is a sports car extravaganza that offers action, overtakes, excitement and entertainment for fans worldwide. Kudos to Peugeot for thinking out of the box, but now they might have a real contender.
I still think it's a pity they could not get the wing-less concept to work consistently enough, it was a novel concept which is very rare in motorsports nowadays. Saying that it's lost none of its looks, I wish Peugeot the greatest success and hope they have not lost too much ground on their competitors whilst they tried to develop the original design.
But it actually worked... It's crazy how many people even among all the "racing youtubers" nobody talks about the whole story. The WEC has changed its rules during hypercar progress, the no-wing design was invented with the regulation of the mandatory 4* tyres of same size and also with triggering of the hybrid at 120km/h, but WEC was trying to get as much manufacturers as possible and rumor says it's because of Ferrari and Toyota they put pressure on the FIA to change theses rules, and then Peugeot was f**ked, it was too late for them to adapt. People saying they made this design as a marketing move or juste to be orginal are crazy, Peugeot won le mans 3 times and it was a pragmatic and efficient design, they come to win Le Mans, and I wish they will as a revenge...
@@YOUENNNN I agree, to an extent it did work, by not having a rear wing they were able to move the aerodynamics to the underside of the car and reduce the drag that comes with having a rear wing, however it only seemed to give them an advantage on higher speed circuits. This was a car designed predominantly for LeMans, but it seemed to be a disadvantage on lower speed circuits. The LMDh class was a result of other manufacturers wanting a lower cost option and it has brought them back in droves, which has certainly improved the sport in my opinion. Yes it does seem unfair on those who launched into an LMD design early on and this is certainly apparent with teams like Glickenhaus feeling the pinch and pulling out. Saying that Peugeot chose the no wing design which is certainly not the norm nowadays, hence why I personally thought it was novel amongst the expected routes others have and would have taken.

@@YOUENNNN ah ok, my mistake, this must be a matter I have no knowledge of. You did mention Tyres, I did not hear the background behind this, however I am sure it would have caused issues if regulations were changed after Peugeot began development given how critical tyre specifications are to a design.
@@billybobbassman Exactly yes, 31" square tyres but then the rules were modified and from then every hypercars got 34" at the rear and 29" at the front except for Peugeot who had no choice but to keep the square because of its specific design, but now they have 34 29 AND a wing so maybe they'll be better

This machine looks awesome and, the French know how to put on quite a show. I just hope that this model has more success than the previous one. Sadly, I have my concerns as, in my opinion, the lack of success was not due to design flaws buy, due to reliability flaws.
They could have chosen a better place to wake the lion than some warehouse with a patchy floor, probably slated for demolition 🤔😉 Where is the lion's roar? They forgot about the sound of the engine... 😢

I preder the older livery to be honest but its an overall beautiful work of art nonetheless. Too bad they had to re-add the ugly box shape rear wing i would have liked to see them have gone a different direction with more bodywork inergration of wing elements instead and keep a very low drag aero design...

It looks way better now, but I'll really miss the wingless one. It's so rare to see a radically different car in motorsports nowadays, it's rare to see true innovation, and that's what peugeot gave us with the original 9X8. Nonetheless I hope this works out for them

As someone who’s new to WEC I’m a little confused, why didn’t they launch this for the first race of the season instead of now?
They wanted to but they weren't ready yet. Teams only have a certain amount of tokens they can use so they have to get it right once they decide to do changes.

Not a big fan of livery, first grey livery as debut was ok, but then they showed 2023 Le Mans livery and it was beautiful. Maybe they will make a new one for 2024 Le Mans.

It’s low drag- but finally acceptance that some sort of rear wing was necessary
It's unfortunate that the rear wing didn't work out because it made for one of the coolest looking cars to ever see a race track.
