  • This wild turkey came along my beloved mother’s, RIP, back porch. This female bird had a large bald spot on her back by the tail. It also looks like a festering wound on her side, which she was tending to and cleaning. For the rest this large bird, an Eastern Wild Turkey seemed fine.
In the picturesque woodlands of New Hampshire, the Eastern Wild Turkeys reign supreme. They are the boss, even if there are bobcats, bears and more lurking around them! These majestic creatures, known for their stunning plumage and commanding presence, have made the dense forests their home. With feathers ranging in shades of deep brown, copper, and iridescent green, the Eastern Wild Turkeys are a true spectacle to behold. Their robust bodies, adorned with a regal fan of tail feathers, display an aura of strength and resilience. These magnificent birds traverse the rugged terrain with grace, their powerful legs propelling them forward with a purposeful stride. As they forage for food, their keen eyes scan the landscape, ever watchful for signs of danger. The Eastern Wild Turkeys of New Hampshire not only serve as a symbol of the untamed wilderness, but also as a reminder of the beauty and diversity that thrives within its borders.
This explains the sunbathing. You’ll notice in the video the turkey spreads her wings, exposing the wound and infected skin where she is balding. Sunbathing is done to warm up or dry feathers, but they also do this for medicinal purposes. sunbathing may serve as a way for turkeys to rid themselves of parasites. The sun's warmth can help deter or eliminate external parasites that may be present on their bodies. This behavior contributes to the overall health and well-being of the turkeys.

Later we saw a group of turkeys with a single male protecting them. A group of turkeys with one male is commonly referred to as a rafter. This term likely originated from the turkeys' habit of roosting up high overnight, such as in the rafters of a barn or in the branches of a tree. Another term for a gathering of turkeys is a gang or mob, which refers to the noisy and sometimes intimidating behavior when large groups of young and older male turkeys assemble. Occasionally, a group of turkeys may also be called a gaggle, particularly when they are calling out loud, gobbling sounds that are characteristic of a large gathering of turkeys. In the wild, mixed groups of turkeys are sometimes known as runs, while groups consisting solely of adult males (known as toms) might be referred to as posses.
