  • Astronomers have used NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to survey the Horsehead Nebula in incredible detail.
    The Horsehead Nebula is an iconic area in the constellation Orion where massive stars are being born.
    Combining views from many telescopes allows astronomers to understand the inner workings of this nebula like never before. From Euclid, to Hubble, and now Webb, we can learn more about our universe thanks to these amazing machines. Read more about Webb's observations of the Horsehead Nebula: science.nasa.g...

    JW is just amazing giving us these views. in the proper sense of the word, awesome. Just (f......) awesome! {sorry, sometimes that extra adjective IS needed. hehehe}

    Stunning images. I liked the edit with the zoom in and panning / cropping / rotation as it gives a good perspective on where the nebula is in the night sky (almost everyone will recognize the Orion constellation) and the sheer detail available from JWST peering into these IR wavelengths now is incredible.
    It was worth the wait for the James Webb 'scope to be launched, deployed and become operational. It is an incredible tool, long may it continue.

    Fwiw, the Horsehead nebula is 1375 light years away from us and 'only' 3.5 light years across. ✨️
    Can barely get my head around these distances, but my favorite example is this:
    Voyager 1's been traveling for almost a half century at 38,000 MPH and has traversed .0016 of a light year. At this rate, it will take 18,000 years to go the full light year.
    Happy trails, everyone ✨️

    I'm one of those people who watches clouds to see recognizable images. Same with images from JWST.
    1:22, first is the gray "puppy face" on the right and in the neck of the horse head.
    1:36, in the view of the "Tip of the horse head" picture and near the lower right side, another puppy face. 😮
    At 2:11, you can see them both.

    so when you look at the northern lights with your naked eyes, they look like very thin clouds that are slightly green and red, but when you take a long exposure picture of them they look like the iconic images you think of when you see the northern lights.. is that the same with galaxies and gas plooms in space? do they look way different and more dull to the naked eye compared to images from telescopes?

    Would the shape of the Horsehead nebula eventually change as its capacity to form stars is exhausted? Is there anyway to estimate how long it has had this shape and form?

    More than two thousand five hundred years ago, the Buddha already knew there are countless stars in the world without a telescope. He said suppose we take every grain of sand on earth and make it into an earth, then grind each of the many earths into grains of sand, then the number of stars in the sky is more than the grains of sand. Everyone can read it in the sutras

    Das ist schon sehr bewundernswert - aber mit der Zeit muss ich sagen, dass das Webb-Teleskop nun auch nicht der megaburner ist. Details hatten wir schon vorher gute. Wesentliche schärfer wird das Bild durch die anderen Aufnahmemöglichkeiten doch nicht. Insgesamt, in Bezug auf die Investition ist das Ergebnis optisch nicht im Verhältnis. Ich hoffe, die Wissenschaft mit ihren steilen Prognosen kann damit mehr Ergebnisse erzielen.
