  • We talk through an incident that occurred on ROYAL Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas this past month and why future cruisers are FREAKING OUT. What happens when an outbreak occurs on an active cruise ship? Is Royal Caribbean doing the right thing by offering compensation package to those affected onboard? We compare Royal Caribbean to Carnival Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Cunard in this latest JJ Cruise story from the sea. This is the latest cruise news in tandem across the cruise industry where all cruise lines are making cruise cutbacks for cruise passengers onboard cruise ships during 2024 we ask the question- should the cruise lines offer compensation onboard affected cruise ships?! What do cruise ships do with passengers who are hurt while at sea? How do Cruise Ship Crew handle these affected cruise passengers? Are cruise ship passengers okay with cruise lines who fail to prevent outbreaks at sea? We talk through verified experiences of Travelers getting hurt by an outbreak on their cruise and what would happen if this happens to you when vacationing onboard Cruise Ships including the worlds largest cruise ship Icon of the Seas or soon to be Star of the Seas 2025, and even the worlds smallest cruise ships. This could happen on any Caribbean vacation or in any Vacation or Hotel, but unlikely to happen onboard many cruise ships whether on the Worlds Biggest Cruise Ship Class; or, the Smallest Cruise Ship Class and every Cruise Ship in between. What are your thoughts on this story, the cruisers freaking out, and the compensation being offered on cruise ships cruising around Mexico on their Mexico Cruise Vacation 2024?

Summer of 2023 we were on a 3-week NCL cruise. My wife broke out with an itchy rash on her upper body. She went to the ships medical facility to get some anti-itch cream. She knew that the rash wasn’t bedbugs, just wanted something for the itching. The ship’s doctor examined her and agreed with her that it wasn’t bedbugs - my wife is also a doctor. She was given an anti-itch cream.
About 15-minutes after we returned to our cabin there was a knock on the door. A housekeeping supervisor, our cabin steward, a maintenance guy, and a security guy were there to inspect our cabin for bugs. They took the bed apart and examined every inch of it. They even took the headboard off the wall. No bugs! They even replaced bed covering.

As a hotelier I would give a 100% refund and comp a future stay. I would also offer to launder all of their clothes. We have found that the biggest carriers of Bed Bugs are people returning from a cruise and guests from Europe.

So, your comment about bed bugs liking dirty places, is incorrect. You can have a pristine home and still get them because all bed bugs care about is their food source which is humans. As someone who keeps there home very clean, and has had bed bugs due to others in my building bringing them in, I want to educate you on the fact that it doesn’t matter how clean or dirty a place is, bed bugs don’t care and can be anywhere.

That comment was false. Has nothing yo do with cleanliness. My niece brought them to us from a train ride. I always put my luggage outside and wash clothes immediately then spray my luggage and sit out a few days. They are VERY VERY hard to get rid off.

We will definitely clarify, warm places including bodies are main sources they are attracted to. When it comes to traveling with them, it tends to be through clothes that have yet to be laundered while traveling (dirty clothes/clothes worn while traveling) and on bodies of people. Luggage is also a popular place.
The Train is a perfect example as it’s a common place for multitudes of passengers to travel on each day and usually has seams on the seats. Both the multitude of people (often body-to-body) and seats are perfect environments for them to hitch-hike to the next body.
Obviously, when they live in mattresses cleanliness doesn’t matter. Even with clean sheets or freshly cleaned rooms, the bed bugs won’t be affected.
Someone who has bed bugs doesn’t mean they are unclean, it purely means they were in an environment where someone or something was already affected.
      Thanks for addressing this!

Soooo my friend was traveling through Wyoming, when she got home and unpacked had noticed a few strange things. It turned out that she had brought bed bugs back to her house. She found the signs pretty quickly. However she still had to get an exterminator for bed bugs. It was priced by square footage of the house. Her cost was around $3k for a 4,000ish square foot house. They have to bake or heat your entire house to a high temp. You have to try to move out anything that won't take the heat including art or paintings and electronics - tv's etc. It took about a day or two including heating up and cooling down. Then they inspected again to make sure they were dead. It's a crazy expensive process!

While I don't travel enough, also consider a Luggage Bed Bug Heater. You can literally put your luggage in there and it heats it up past the survival level of most insects.

People say to leave your suitcases under the bed but aren't you afraid they could be under there? This is why I wish Cruise cabin had LVP flooring instead of carpet. Bed bugs don't like to walk around on hard surfaces. We actually got bed bugs at a very expensive Orlando resort. You don't have to be a dirty person to get bed bugs. If they are in the area you're in you're going to get them and you're going to bring them home. Getting rid of them at home is a major nightmare

I travelled a lot with my job. I had to make a four day visit about two hours from my home town. I checked in and went to get something to eat. I pulled back the covers to check the bed and lo and behold I saw bed bugs. The first thing I did was to call another hotel and got lucky to get a room. I took my luggage and went to the front to tell them about the bed bugs. They came up to check and offered me another room. I said a NO I’m checking out. Since I worked for the government I called our travel agency and she called the hotel to make I wouldn’t be charged.

The bugs might not have been in that family’s room when they boarded. The bugs may have come into the room via the suitcases. Bed bugs are called hitchhikers as they travel via people, suitcases, backpacks, etc. Hard sided suitcases are slightly more protective against bedbugs than soft sided luggage. Never put any clothing away when you get home without washing it and putting it through the dryer even if you didn’t wear that item. It is the heat that kills them. Suitcases can be put outside after being placed inside a black plastic bag so that it gets hot.

I’ve never encountered bedbugs. My sisters house got them from a used couch. It cost in the thousands and took over a year to get rid of them.
I think RC did fine. Honestly, a new room and free laundry service for all the clothes would satisfy me. But I travel light and solo, 10 minutes for me to change rooms. I realize it would be a royal pain for families or normal packers.
$500 in onboard credit and a discounted cruise is more than reasonable, even if it expires in a year.

I've read several sources that say, Windex can kill bedbugs. Cheap solution although not permanent but might be a good idea to bring some along on a cruise, spray the mattress and around the cabin.. I don't cruise but my friends and family do. The Windex dissolves the waxy coating on the insect body causing them to die.

Awhile back, some you tube cruise bloggers reported that ONE person in their cabin had received bedbug bites. This married couple slept together and in the same bed yet the wife was unscathed. They made a huge deal out of it and expected major compensation yet didn’t want to move from their cabin to another cabin that was the only one available. Surprise! No further bedbug bites even though they stayed in their originally booked cabin.

Not all people react to bedbug bites. It is very common for only one person to show a reaction to the bites while the spouse “isn’t bitten”. However the spouse actually was bitten but just didn’t have an allergic reaction, which is what causes the welts.

I thought I had bedbugs and freaked out because I woke up with the tell-tale "breakfast, lunch, and dinner" bites. My husband didn't have any bites, nor did my son in our own home. My husband had to order all sorts of things on Amazon like the bedbug stands under the foot posts, matress covers, diatomaceous earth, etc. I couldn't sleep and was freaking out until I went to a dermatologist who examined me and diagnosed me with dermatitis.

It sounds as though RC did a more than adequate job of service recovery. As travelers, it is important to be aware that bed bugs are quite common especially in places where people move in and out of frequently such as hotels, Air BNBs, and cruise ships. As you advised, performing a thorough inspection of the room, bedding, etc. can save you a lot of headaches.

  • @smithtown00

Did they have to stay in the room with the bugs? That's completely unacceptable. I would like to think they moved them asap (hopefully to an upgraded accommodation) and offered to launder all of their clothes, if there was a concern.
Additionally, I would hope they inspect the room throughly AND adjacent rooms to determine if they have a serious problem. The room should be treated as immediately as possible.
The onboard credit is nice and they should have gotten a comped dinner at a restaurant as well.
Bedbugs are no joke. I had them and it is an absolute and utter nightmare. It can take months to get rid of them, and its really tramatizing and psychicologically damaging. This is a very big deal. I suspect those that are down playing the incident have never had them.
I agree that the credit for future use should be longer than a year. Cruises are expensive and many need time to save up for them.
I want to hear that the cruise ship went above and beyond for the situation. Moving them to another room is key, along with laundry. I woild want to know they acted quicky to ensure it doesn't spread.
    I wouldn't be happy otherwise.

We received a FCC for a different issue on our Allure cruise in December. It was explained to us that we only need to apply the FCC to a booked sailing by the expiration date.
A tip I would give is that if you find yourself in a situation you are receiving FCC, be sure that the letter that guest services gives you has a monetary amount on it. Our letter had a percentage of cruise fare listed which ended up being calculated as when applied to our account than what guest services told us. It wasn't an issue we were even looking for compensation for so it was not worth fussing over.

RC was good about giving them the FCC but should not have attached an expiration date on it. I would not be happy to have to use it within a year even though I do about 3-4 cruises a year but there are times when you just can’t take another cruise in a year. I’ve had roaches in a big brand name hotel in Honolulu. I didn’t report it I guess because I thought that was normal in Hawaii. But I should have reported it. I hate roaches and it creeped me out to see them. 🤨

I have to say I have personally sailed the Navigator at least 4 times in the last year and have never had any issue so if they didn't bring them aboard it is certainly not prevalent. As far as the FCC I am not sure that 30% is a great offering- was it the list price or any price they found? Bummer this happened. It is a good little ship!

  • @lashaundagates7945

You know I hate when people accuse the victims. It could have come from previous cruisers. It is not always the people who report it. You have the think how much time staff really have to get the rooms ready for the next embarkation time. They do not have time to thoroughly clean. I myself look for those things when I first get on the ship. I carry alcohol and lavender just in case and a few cleaning products. I agree with everything you said about Royal giving them the 500 credit on board, and I also agree there should not be a time limit on when they have to book it. I’m a big cruiser and also a travel agent. I would be upset if my clients were in this situation and pissed if they said hey we got credit but we can’t afford to do another trip back to back. I’m a carnival fan but I do attend on trying Icon of the seas. Great job on trying to make it right but expand the date for at least 2 years. Also we traveled a few years ago and we weren’t in the room 10 minutes and she started screaming. Finds out it was fleas and they immediately moved us and gave us a discount.

Bed bugs, as you point out, can be seen with the naked eye...and a flashlight...and a photo of what they look like. No one has mentioned this one important measure to check a room for bed bugs...educate the room attendants on what to look for and where. Since bed bugs are looking for people for cling to, if I had one place to check for bed bugs, I'd routinely check mattresses, bed board and frames...and when a room is being made up, the mattresses are laid bare...easiest time to look these insects.

Completely agree that the fcc should have had no expiry date, but also 400 is not really acceptable in my opinion either. The trauma, and the clean up, and the after care ...
I think perhaps a full refund for that cruise would have been more appropriate, as well as perhaps a 400 fcc. It may not be the ships fault, but at the end of the day those passengers tell 10 people who tell 10 people ... and so on.

Im so paranoid of BBs since they ate me alive some years back. Ever since when I travel, I’ll use hotel hair dryer during vacation (if free time allows) on my clothes and soft luggage. When I come home, I’ll leave luggage open in sunlight or use hair dryer in winter. BBs don’t discriminate on whether you’re clean or not, you’re getting confused w/roaches ants

RC should have given them a free cruise for two to wherever they were going.
I always check the bed and other soft surfaces the first time I enter my cabin. I bring a sleep sac and put it on top of the bed. I will get a bed liner too. After the Tyson incident from a while back, I don't trust duvet covers, bedspreads or comforters. I have the bed pillows removed from the room because they always have an odor.

I did not know until I woke up with bites the next morning, and even more the next morning. I finally realized what it must be. Marriott says they didn’t have bedbugs. It was my first experience with them. I think cruise did what they should, but there should be like a 5 year expiration or no expiration on the FCC.

False comment. Bed bugs have nothing to do with cleanliness! Please research. My niece brought them from a train ride. ALWAYS unpack luggage outside and wash immediately and spray down luggage. It took 2 months to get rid of them and very expensive. We had to get a bed bug dog. It’s a traumatizing experience. RC should have changed their room? Did they make them continue sleeping in there? That is not enough 30%… nope more like a free cruise. Or refund me. Vacation is ruined from scratching and being miserable. Bed bug bites are excruciating. Someone else had these on carnival last year. It happens. They are everywhere unfortunately. I use a hair dryer to ck behind headboards.

    • @JJCruise
      @JJCruise  Месяц назад +1

As for the family, they did not make them continue sleeping there. They were able to change rooms. ☺️

While I have never had bed bugs while traveling 11 cruises, my daughter hasn’t been so lucky. She booked a B&B in the NC mountains and after crawling in bed noticed her legs itching. She got up and stated looking around with her flashlight and discovered them. She sent me pics and was asking what in the world to do since it was extremely late at night and everyone was asleep. She quickly put her luggage in the bath tub and went to sleep in her care. The next morning she complained and showed them the pictures and was refunded her money. Needless to say she went somewhere that my husband and I had reserved for her. Unfortunately I think going from place to place with so many others having been there before you it’s easy to come upon them. I don’t necessarily consider it a sign of filth, just unlucky. Obviously wherever they stared had to have been dirty, but going from hotel to hotel or ship to ship we don’t know.

I have never had bed bugs on any trip by land or by sea. I think that Royal Caribbean was very generous in their compensation, except for the expiration of the FCC.
I had a different problem on the same ship (Navigator) and they didn’t do anything for me…. not even an apology. We discovered about a four foot long section of mold growing on the carpet under our sofa from a leak in the wall by the bathroom. There was a different color of carpet where it had been replaced so they were aware of the leak. I was traveling with a compromised immune system. We had to rearrange the room because the couch was difficult to pass in my wheelchair (accessible room). We had noticed a bad smell, but didn’t think anything of it until we moved the couch and found the mold. I would say that at least five crew members came and checked it out before they decided to shampoo the carpet and leave blowers on for two days. I was so paranoid that I wore a mask for the rest of the trip in the cabin. I complained and it fell on deaf ears. I didn’t want a free cruise, but at least wanted to switch cabins. I tried to be understanding and thought perhaps they couldn’t accommodate me in another cabin, but at least they could have apologized and sent me a plate of strawberries or SOMEthing. That is our local ship and we won’t cruise on it ever again.

First of all you are wrong, you do not need to be dirty to have bed bugs. Same thing with lice. Most likely they were brought in from a hotel room they stayed at. If they have been in the cabin, they would have had complaints by multiple guests. bed bugs need to be treated with high temp to get rid of them, not chemicals.
