Are we STILL MOVING onto a Cruise Ship? | Villa Vie Update

  • Earlier this year, we announced big cruise news and address all the reasons why we are moving into a cruise ship and how you have a chance to move into the same cruise ship for 6 months as well! We addressed why cruise passengers are moving onto residential cruise ships by new Residential Cruise Lines including our exciting cruise news of what residential cruise ship we will be moving into and when we will be moving in to our new cruise ship residence. We could not wait to share our onboard experiences along with those from our fellow cruise passengers. However, there are updates to be shared including if we are still moving onto a Cruise Ship this year. Are these cruise passengers justified in their decision to move in to residential cruise ships? Should you book a Residential Cruise Ship Cabin or book a World Cruise Segment? This is the latest cruise news in tandem across the cruise industry where all cruise lines are making cruise cutbacks for cruise passengers onboard cruise ships during 2024 and we were surprised by the affordability of moving into a cruise ship in 2024! How are residential cruise ships different for cruise passengers than mainstream ocean cruises or world cruises on mainstream cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean World Cruise on Serenade of the Seas Cruise Ship or Cunard World Cruise at sea? How do Cruise Ship Crew handle these residential cruise passengers? Are cruise ship passengers okay with residential cruise lines and 2024 changes to cruises? We talk through our experiences and excitement with partnering with a new cruise line. This affects cruisers from the World’s Biggest Cruise Ship Class, to the World’s Smallest Cruise Ship Class and every Cruise Ship in between as Residential Cruise Ships may take over the Cruise Industry as a new way to Travel the World on a budget while being digital nomads and working at sea. What are your thoughts in our inside cruise chat on the biggest update of us moving into a Cruise Ship 2024?

    It's a big risk being one of the first residents. I would guess in 3.5 yrs they will need to do at least one surpise maintenance and it won't be cheap putting everyone up in hotels etc. I think I'd wait until the proof of concept is proven.

      @@alanabroad3471 unfortunately it will not be sailing tomorrow just as it hasn't sailed for the past 11+ dates announced or targeted during the last 104 days of delay. One of the resident vlogging couples last Friday August 23 said Villa Vie told them the sequence of events would be 1) Sea trials then 2) PSSC certification then residents can board then 4) Maritime and Coastgard Agency certification and 5) Public Health sign off and then supposedly launching August 31. As has been the case, 1 week to do all that is not achievable. And sea trials were targeted for tomorrow Wednesday but now are supposedly Friday so the unrealistic timeline is already blown out of the water.

    I have been very interested in VV. However, given the extended time in dry dock I wonder what the financial situation is. I have noted that they have increased all their segment booking prices by up to 50% and that they are not turning on the air conditioning what they are at port in Ireland to save money. I would hate to book one or more segments only to have a trip that was going to be impacted by cost Cy putting measures or worst still be left high and dry due to bankruptcy. Has anyone any insight to the costs associated with running an old cruise ship?

    That's a bummer to hear about the delay, JJ, but thanks so much for the update! We totally understand that unexpected things can come up during certification of these older ships. While we were definitely looking forward to your seasoned opinions on living aboard Villa Vie Residences, your positive attitude is a breath of fresh air. Let’s be honest…name the last ship that didn’t have issues on its maiden voyage? I’ll wait…
    The fact they’re being as safe and sure as possible rather than trying to hit a specific date is commendable. Even more so, it sounds like they’re communicating with their residents and even putting them up in resorts etc as opposed to “sorry! Come back later!” shows they’re putting service ahead of dollars.

      I was on the maiden voyage of Celebrity Equinox. In fact, my son was the first child to cross the threshold. The Equinox was delivered early- was ready before it's planned maiden voyage- so they chose to sail her 8 days early and quickly planned an 8 night Norwegian Fjords cruise. It was fantastic- no issues. My only "complaint" was that the piped in music on the decks was more Caribbean than Norwegian but that was because this was a one time cruise to the Fjords and planned last minute. So- not all maiden voyages go wrong. The things that tend to happen on maiden voyages are much more trivial than what is happening with VVO. The ship is three months behind and not in any condition to sail- and the company isn't solvent IMO. Why would they waste all this time in dry dock and not refurbish the cabins? In one episode of their dry dock- the designer was coming up with ideas for the ship. Come on- the designs were done months ago-material should have been ordered. It's been in dry dock for months. So much could and should have been accomplished on the Hotel Side of things- but it wasn't. There was no planning. Mike's attitude is wait and see what happens- even he isn't optimistic. Wait and see if the ship sails, if the toilets flush, etc. etc. Horrible- I'd have no confidence in Mike and Kathy. They don't know what they are doing.

The ship has NOT yet had sea trials. Also the CEO did know about the rudder stocks and said so in his Progress video. He said they were insufficient for years but were grandfathered under the prior owner. Seemingly insufficient research was done to find out the grandfathering would no longer apply upon resale. He intended to sail through some of the most dangerous waters- Drakes Passage, the Artic and the Caribbean in one of the highest predicted hurricane years during the hurricane season with these insufficient rudders and only replace them after thousands of additional nautical miles in late 2026 in an unrealistic 12 day dry dock in Singapore. In the video he said he argued with the inspectors regarding replacing them but lost. Then he spun it by saying "Safety First" to explain the delays though it is quite obvious that it was timeline and money first until he was forced to replace them.

      As it stands now- residents have to decorate their own cabins if they want them to be modernized. They are allowed to "paint". Has anyone ever cruised? Ship wall bend for a reason- they are made of a specific (rubbery) surface- so bend with the ships movement-. They aren't "paintable" unless passengers are going to haul painting materials onboard and stink up their cabins with oil based primer and paints. Not going to happen. They can bring their own furniture onboard- what? From where? How much is that going to cost? Is it seaworthy furniture- mounted properly? Um- no. This isn't going to sail.

    There is a reason that residential cruise ships dont exist...for long. All ships need heavy maintenance. They cannot continually sail. Where will the people go when a major failure occurs ? With vacation cruises they cancel. Often a number of cruises. These delays are just that issue and will repeat.

    • @rebeccahowell6538
      @rebeccahowell6538 Месяц назад +2

      Weekly cruisers spend a lot of money on cruises. They live it up! They book the spa, drink, buy stuff in the gift shops, play bingo, GO TO THE CASINO. That's how cheapskates (like me) can cruise for cheap. Without those weekly passengers- making the most of their annual vacation- the cruise lines don't have the revenue. Royal Caribbean, Serenade of the Seas did the 9 month world cruise and it was $90,000 for a couple (interior). That's $10K a month for two people. Roughly $300 a day for a couple- which included business class airfare, premium drinks, free internet and gratuities. You can't really beat that. There is no way you can travel the world in 270 days for less than that- with food, lodgings, and travel expenses from place to place. That sounds about right. However- I'd get tired of the same ship, same people, and same food after a while. Part of the fun of cruising IMO is trying different ships. I can travel for about $3600.00 a month as a solo passenger - often in a balcony cabin. So I'd just look for deals and travel on some nice cruises to the places you want to see and keep your home (or downsize to a cheap place to hang your hat between cruises).

    • @RetiredZGrt
      @RetiredZGrt 18 дней назад

      @@rebeccahowell6538 is that figure of $3600/mth as a solo traveler an all-in price (ie does it include all the ways a normal cruise line will nickel and dollar you for more money)? The one issue I see with all the normal cruises is that they spend so few hours in a port so you barely get a taste of the country. I don't understand why they also can't do overnights, even on their world cruises. That's one of the few appealing parts of all these unsuccessful, high risk residential cruises.

    • @rebeccahowell6538
      @rebeccahowell6538 15 дней назад

      @@RetiredZGrt Hi. My last few cruises with travel insurance were on NCL March 2024 solo outside cabin (7 day Bermuda) for $800.00 including taxes, travel insurance, port charges and the "Free At Sea" programs (which includes free alcohol for the entire cruise) thrown in for good measure. All in with gratuities- I paid $912.00. My next cruise was on Regal Princess (16 days Transatlantic) in a solo balcony cabin for $1000.00 including travel insurance, ports taxes, taxes. Gratuities were an additional $250.00. My next cruise was on MSC, May 2024 (7 night Canada cruise) which was a solo balcony cabin for $800.00 with travel insurance. Gratuities were an additional $112.00. The next one was Island Princess, June 2024 (10 Night Canada/New England) for $1400.00 solo balcony cabin which again included taxes, port charges, and travel insurance. Gratuities were an addition $160.00. So far I cruised a total of 40 days in 2024- for $135.00 a day (including gratuities) which averages out to $4075.00 per month with gratuities, travel insurance, port charges, tax (and on NCL free drinks). Not all cruises are this affordable. The next one is a solo outside cabin on NCL SKY Lisbon- Capetown (21 days), which I'm paying $4200 with free alcohol, port charges, taxes, and travel insurance. That one will end up costing more- $200 a day, but I could have done it cheaper in an inside. In fact, had I bought an annual travel insurance premium (instead of per cruise)- I could have saved a lot of money, but I didn't know I'd be doing all these cruises! If and when I find cruises that are convenient, inexpensive, or are going somewhere I want to go- I book them. As for cruises that do overnights- Holland America does do overnights in ports. Some other cruise lines stay overnight- and you can do a BTB on those itineraries and stay overnight, but I agree with the allure of cruising and staying several days in a port. That's why I like the Bermuda cruises- because you are there two or three nights.

And repairs have continued after it was refloated for an additional 36 days and are still ongoing. Industry insiders say (I can't verify) that Fred.Olsen picked this ship to get rid of because it was a money pit. The second ship was supposed to be Q2 2024 which we are coming to the end of. With the additional loan the company had to go back for with all the delays, it would seem surprising if any company would loan them more for a second ship for quite some time. I’m surprised she doesn’t have any engine issues already. I’m sure Fred Olsen got rid of this vessel bc she is at the end of her life expectancy. What I’m surprised by is how they felt confident enough to buy not only an old, but cold ship idling for 4 years knowing “all maintenance records had been deleted” (Petterson). All this time at a ship yard has to be draining their cash flow, I would be very surprised if they have the liquidity to secure the next scheduled dry dock much less another ship. I feel bad for those that sank $100k+ in this, hoping for a dream, but I’m also baffled by why they would after a few quick google research on these people running the company.
