Who ever takes the LA coaching job will not get the credit if the Lakers win a championship. So its a lose lose proposition.
2 points: First I think its ok to get turned down. It's a reality that Lakers Head Coach is not everyone's dream job. They made a serious offer. He respectfully listened and declined. I think because college is different from the Pro's nobody will lose face. It was a gamble he could make it anyway and people looked at the name and said "damn he could be it." That means it was considered a good choice.
2. A few years ago Reddick said the Lakers organization was trash. If the organization has any self respect, in my opinion, interview him and use him to pad the numbers on how many coaches you're interviewing. But hire? Never. NEVER. You throw eggs at my house you never getting invited over to use my pool.
The Lakers offer was too low. In order for the Lakers to pull Hurley away from a Championship situation at UConn the money needed to be much higher. 3 years 75 million, 4 years 100 million or more.
The Lakers lowballed Tyron Lue and put in coaches to stay.
Who knows what the demands were this time? Did Lebron put in demands did the ownership demand he keep coaches and some players?
Most of the time coaches want full control. I doubt Hurley was given full control and the money was not enough to pull him away.

If Jerry West and Dr. Jerry Buss were alive they would have payed the money.
To bring Shaq to L.A. it took a massive deal to get him here. To keep Kobe in L.A. it took a massive deal.
To get Phil Jackson to L.A. he was paid 10 million a year. Yet almost 20 years later the Lakers front office only offer 12 million a year!?
Phil Jackson rightfully so earned 10 million a year. Yet 20 years later Hurley was offered 12 million a year? The math doesn't add up. The players salary has quadrupled from the same time.
Yes Hurley never coaches in the NBA but he was getting paid close to the offer at UCONN.
You want to be a cheapskate that's fine. You certainly won't get any marquee player or coach.
History shows the Lakers have set the standard and payed the highest salary. That is the history. Wilt,Kareem, Magic,Pat Riley, Shaq, Kobe, Phil Jackson. You see the pattern no where does cheapskate GM fit in for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Hurley made the right decision But your assessment about lbj is false. The Lakers are 4 years off of winning a championship after assembling a team when they were terrible for the previous years. To think that they can't assemble a team and win another one is delusional. Yeah lbj influence has possibly led him to winning less championships but hindsight is 2020

Most coaches that got there were substitution coaches, his actual coaches were, del harris, phil jackson, mike brown, dantoni and byron scott. I think he made the right choice, no way I’d want to go embarrass myself with LeBron & be ordered around by him when I’m the coach just to be fired within a year or 2 like every coach LeBron has had with the Lakers. My understanding that is the current players contracts don’t allow it. It would have to be changed when a new collective bargaining agreement is sign between the players and owners. It has been decades, since the NBA allowed there to be player/coach.
No one wants to coach a team who’s led by a superstar in his 21st season who’s past his prime and doesn’t know how to get out of his own way and still wants to be a number one option. Lakers won’t be a good job to take until lebron retires it’s just that simple

Rasheed had Larry Brown as Head Coach when the Pistons won Championship in 2004.
Brown was a former NCAA Champion Coach (1988 Kansas). He won the Championship with the Pistons and then the players and Front Office ran Larry Brown out of of town and ended up going to Coach the Charlotte Bobcats, New York Knicks in the upcoming years.
Larry Brown is notorious for being terrible to work with 😂

Lakers couldn't get Dan Hurley as their New Head Coach, why not try to go after his brother Bobby Hurley who is the Head Coach at Arizona State. Might not of got Dan Hurley but at least you get a "Hurley". Bobby was a back to back champion as a player with Duke University (1991 & 1992).
