Based on he miniseries that just wrapped up, Mike actually DID let success go to his head a little. I remember him bragging on Arsenio Hall and on Video Soul about how much money he was making and how he would hook Ralph up if he needed it...right here on tv. His ego was out of control for awhile, plus he has a temper. Truth moment, I think he was always a little jealous of Ralph, and that was why he always fought with Ralph. He grew out of it.
they ALL were jealous of Ralph to a point...as was designed by those that steered their careers early on...but Biv was and always will be the smartest out of them all...
I love Mike Bivens because he always keeps it 100 percent. People needs to stop blaming Bobby for Whitney's downfall. i love Whitney and everything but let us be real with ourselves for a minute here and admit that she had some demons of her own that she was battling with as well. And MIke made a very valid point Bobby and Whitney really wasn't that much different from one another hence their similar backgrounds . And the fact remains that she choose to do drugs before Bobby came into the picture.
But on another note the loyalty and love that the guys from New Edition have shown to Bobby is beautiful it really shows that they do value and respect each other as brothers inspite of his many challenges.
Clive marketed her as america's sweetheart. It's like oprah said in that 2009 interview with Whitney, "the image had been painted" so Bobby was always gonna get the blame until the truth came out. Being married affected his career more than hers
Plus the media kept saying she was dimming her light for him when her success starting waning. The truth is Celine Dion and Shania twain became more popular than Whitney in the pop market. In terms of movies, Halle berry and vivica fox were making more than Whitney at the box office (the Flintstones and independence day respectively). Whoopi Goldberg's movie Ghost with Demi Moore made $500 million which is more than the bodyguard. Whitney was a really great singer but she had too much competition to last long with her limited acting ability. Mike is right abt the media oversimplifying things.

Many people who worked for them stated that Bobby began to isolate her from her friends and family and they noticed when she came back she was in worse condition than ever before. I don’t blame him for starting her on drugs (because we all know he didn’t) but he surely didn’t make it better and aided to her demise.

Yes he really did. There's so much great stuff here in this interview. He comes across as genuine and loyal. His description of the relationship between Bobby & Whitney was awesome. I love that he described Whitney as a "homegirl" rather than drag her through the mud. We know she had issues and so did/does Bobby but at the end of the day, they were together because they had something in common. He acknowledges that Bobby has issues but points out that people don't see the good in him. I really enjoyed this interview.

Hadn't heard this before. Biv really came through for Bobby in this interview. He said something that I didn't quite understand until later in Whitney's career. Clive Davis created the "image" of Whitney that we all saw and believed for so long. She didn't seem like a "homegirl" to a lot of us and I remember thinking she would end up marrying a white guy so, when she married Bobby, I was stunned. That was the difference between her image/the perception many of us had of her and actual reality. This is also why many of us didn't think she was into drugs until Bobby came along but that wasn't the case. No disrespect to Whitney at all, just wanted to put things in the proper perspective.

Mike Bivins handled this interview with class. I also know now why Bivins was the spokesman for the group in the old days. The interviewers forget that Whitney Houston was a person. She was a mom, daughter and a wife. To the world she was a singer. The interviewers seem disrespectful to her passing. They seem to want the gossip. Bobby lost his wife, mother, father and daughter. I'm from Jersey, live in Newark & it's a WAR ZONE out here! Our streets are gritty & they DON'T breed PUNKS or YES MEN. If Whitney ended up addicted, it was bcuz SHE WANTED 2. Bobby was a drinker & a weed head when he met Whitney & thru the early years. Whitney was HARDBALL, we all KNEW THAT, bcuz she got LOOSE & TURNED UP when she was in Jersey. Newark is 10-15 minutes outside of Manhattan, it's urban, inner-city, & fast-paced, it's crime, drugs, fast money & fast talkers, so ANYBODY who actually blames poor Bobby IS A FOOL! His marriage 2 Whitney I feel, ruined his career, whether he likes 2 admit it or not. The poor guy was living in Whitney's shadow & I feel loosing himself & having been eclipsed by her massive celebrity, tormented him & became the basis 4 a depression that he self-medicated, w/substances. Whitney and Bobby were drug addicts. They both needed help, but Bobby was able to get the love, mental health support and help he needed, while Whitney continued to struggle. They might have loved one another, but they had a very dysfunctional relationship and unfortunately this ultimately attributed to their daughter's demise...However, Bobby is still standing and hopefully he continues to thrive...sad, sad love story.

Good friends are hard to find. Tragic life choices aren't made by others for us. Couples go through things just not under a microscope. Bobby loved Whitney but it didn't work. Two huge stars lit the sky up and burned through life. There was a perfect storm that took Whitney while Bobby was out of her life. To lose his child & the mother of his child is horrible enough. He's not a bad guy. We need friends to stand up for us at times & God Bless Mike.

I don't understand why people can't give props to Bobby without insulting Whitney in these comments. Just like Biv said, Whitney chose Bobby. He was a star and nobody was a bigger Bobby Brown fan than Whitney Houston. She never blamed him for her problems, and she defended him endlessly. They loved each other, even after the divorce, until the day she died. Why do people feel the need to insult Whitney just because she was more successful?
I see your point. I don't think people are insulting Whitney as much as airing out the ugly truth. Bobby Brown's reputation has taken a beating for decades because people worshipped the image of a singer without ever really seeing who she truly was. It was done at the expense of Bobby. I think people just want to see the underdog vindicates.

Wow!!! Now that's a true brother that told the truth and no matter what they went through as brothers he is his brothers keeper. And loved the New Edition Story that just aired on BET. They did an excellent job told their life story very well and brought back awesome memories from back in the day. The actors who played these brothers from school age to adult hood were on point. lol... I recorded it on DVR and have been watching it every day.

I have so much respect for this interview and Mike Bivins' point of view. I don't understand why people don't realize people change. I respect the fact that they didn't do interviews bashing each other especially at a time like this!
Whitney did recreational drugs before she met Bobbie; she controlled her shit - early 80's - early 90's. When they got married, and The Bodyguard dropped (1992 - 1994), her drug use increased significantly (i.e. marital problems, stress); she went from being a Superstar to a Megastar! He cheated on her, put her off the New Edition bus with Bobbi Kris in the middle of Utah (winter), and hit the woman. From a man's point of view, I agree with Cissy Houston - Whitney chose the wrong partner. If my woman is the breadwinner, I would do any and everything to get her together. Quincy Jones knew them both and gave an insightful comment..."Bobby told me he was going to Whitney's house for their first date. When Bobby got back, the first thing he said to Quincy was 'she got all of that with just two albums'. Translation: he was comparing his success with New Edition/solo career with hers - jealousy. She was no angel but she needed a man who was as strong or stronger than she was.

Right because that could've been NE too off their 1st two albums had they not had shady management. Both were BIG hits and both tours were successful. I went to that concert twice in my hometown and the one in DC that summer. As we all saw they should not have been broke.

It's just that the drugs mixed with the evil music industry took them both down a toxic rabbit hole. Mike Bivins is always so smooth & upfront with his interviews. When it comes from the heart, all the lies are dispelled. Hats to Mike Bivins & New Edition for life!!!!
YEEEES SHE CHOSE HIM! I knew all along as well Whitney wasn't all squeaky clean. However they LOVED each other unconditionally. They just could not continue together because if both of their issues. People talk about falling out of love with people but these two ALWAYS had mad love. I wish they could have handled their addiction issues si they could have been a great combination. As Mike said they were more compatible than people thought.

This is a good good interview. I applaud Bivens for shedding light on the misconception that Bobby Brown was this horrific man who did so much damage . Did you not see the New Edition Story on BET? It was revealed that Bobby Brown had a destructive personality which was the root to all the problems within the group. Whitney Houston carried herself as a Lady before she got with Bobby, and as you know, women take on the personality of her man when in Love. Slowly Whitney turned ratchet. Poor Whitney, blinded by Love didn't see the Devil in her view.

While that may be true, Whitney kept her usage on the DL where no one even knew of it because she conducted herself like a Goddess. However, it is also true when she got with Bobby, Whitney's personality and attitude changed drastically. She took on the destructive personality of her husband Bobby.
I agree with Ramona, Whitney, got worse when she hooked up with Bobby, I ain't blaming Bobby, cause the brother had his own demons.. and I think at one point he really tried ..fo himself and her ,..but even though both clicked in a way..same time they were not good together cause both battled demons..so sad
Bobby wasn't the bad guy, but he wasn't a good husband either. Whitney was a functioning addict and primary breadwinner; Bobby couldn't function. People blame Bobby because they believe if she married a stable non-addict man, she could have survived. Bobby needed to hit rock bottom before he changed his ways. I'm glad he's cleaned up now, but the damage is done.
