Laurence is the only reskin in From's games that is more than justified. It's well established that this is the kind of animal the high members of the church turned into, the way you first discover him laying on the altar is freaky, and the fire makes it more than just a harder hitting copy. And really, the first Cleric Beast was awesome, but not very hard and doesn't last long. We needed more of it, as opposed to, you know, 3 Asylum Demons.
It's justified yes, but disappointing. Firstly, in terms of visuals, the design should not have been an exact copy with a different colour palette. You’re fighting fucking Laurence, the first ever vicar, lionized founder of the ruling church of Yharnam, and quite possibly the most dangerous adversary a hunter can face. They should have made him look absolutely terrifying, like a mangled, distorted nightmare that haunts you like the scourge haunts Laurence’s misdeeds. I don’t know whether it’s laziness that led to his uninspired design or whether it’s deliberate to show his descent into a brute and banal beast. If the latter, then it’s a pretty shitty choice considering symbolic gestures are better conveyed in cut-scenes and not in entire boss fights. Maybe a cut-scene after the fight where you have a vision about his reaction to the spread, and his mindset right before his inevitable transformation. As for the fight itself, I’m not saying it isn’t difficult, but there was SO much room for a better fight that I was like ‘Come on From!’. The difficulty mainly stems from a despicable camera, and lack of mobility in his third phase. If he was this fucking aggressive behemoth with relentless attacks that are difficult to dodge, it would much better convey the savagery that comes with his beasthood. The whole thing really just felt underwhelming, badly planned and definitely didn’t live up to the hype of hearing about him constantly throughout the main game. The one thing I did like about the fight though, was how disturbing his screams were. The pained, shrill and horrible noise he makes really reflects just how far gone he is. It made me uncomfortable, and that’s always a good thing.
@@crimson7277 puzzled peasant you don't even know what you're looking at graphically. do you know how many effect works are going off at the same time during this fight. this is hardly a copy of the first cleric beast you fight which was insane graphically in it's own right
While I understand why people are unimpressed by Laurence being a re-skinned Cleric Beast, I personally buy into the idea that many members of the church, after consuming the blood, eventually transform into these specific monsters.
+NR Rowley It also stated in the vanilla games lore that Lawrence became the first Cleric Beast. So anyone complaining about it is an idiot who doesn't know anything about this games story.
+OopsRuMad Do you really want to spread this nonsense whenever someone dares to have the nerve to criticize the blatant laziness of Lawrence's design? The lore simply said that Lawrence became the first Cleric Beast. That's it. It NEVER said anything about him having a rehashed moveset. There's no reason why Cleric Beast 2.0 couldn't have a completely different moveset despite having the same basic skeleton model. Nor did the lore say ANYTHING about Cleric Beasts looking alike. Tigrex and Nargacuga in the Monster Hunter games have the exact same skeleton model, but they have completely different movesets aside from a shared bite attack.
brightsuperstition It wasn't lazy. It fit the lore and he was different enough from the original cleric beast. Similar to lions. One lion may be stronger then another but they both fight in a very similar way.
+OopsRuMad If you are content with accepting low-quality works shoved down your throat, then I guess you can say he's "different enough." Your lion example is only relevant if there was even a single sentence in the lore that says Cleric Beasts look alike and behave alike as if they are part of a same species. But the lore says nothing about that. The vagueness of the lore opened the door for many radically different interpretations of what past/different Cleric Beasts might have been like. They might have been quadrupedal. They might have even had multiple hands and legs like Amygdalas. They might have had wings or multiple heads. But nah, FROM was too lazy to do a radically different interpretation. They instead reused the same model, slapped on a fire aura so that his attacks would have extra fire (which is basically the Firesage Demon treatment) and gave him 2-3 extra attacks that are lazy variants of attacks seen in previous bosses in Bloodborne to please people like you who are content with low-quality works.
brightsuperstition It's not low quality to me. It met all of my requirements being the following: -Does it fit the lore? Yes. -Is it different then its counterpart version? Yes. You have no clue what low quality is. You're not an artist. Your opinion and tastes aren't fact. Get over yourself you fool.
for all those saying he is just Cleric Beast 2.0. Maybe that is the point. Look at this man, the person you've heard throughout the entire game, the founder of the church and key player for the majority of the game. We wanted to meet him, fight him in some sort of glorious battle. But in the end, that key character, saviour with the old blood, is no more than another beast. All honor and sense lost to him, just another beast we have to kill. This is further emphasized when he loses his lower half. Look at this once great man, crawling, screeching. A fiery, desperate creature. This is Laurence, from a desirable "hero", now just something we've seen before that we once again have to slay.
+Aaron Reid Or not. xD He shouldve been so much more. Not a better Cleric Beast on fire. Im sorry but that "hes just another beast" isnt right. It just aint right, friend. In the end, we all wanted to see Laurence. The first of the vicars. We were pumped. We were hyped. And in the end, we got a cleric beast on fire. It just aint right, man xD
That's my point. We were all extremely pumped to see or meet laurence and in the end he turned out to be no different then any other beast we've killed. Plus, they mention far beforehand that he turned into a cleric beast so it wouldn't make sense if he was something else anyway lol
Aaron Reid But he couldve been a different cleric beast. Special and epic. Shit man, From is kinda creative when they feel like it, dont you agree? Why couldnt they be creative with the notion of a Cleric Beast? Why couldnt they have made Laurence something more than the Cleric Beast from the main game? Who happens to be a faster, furrier Manus, btw. We were all pumped. And like you agree, we got nothing xD I have no idea how you can say you were waiting so eagerly for a fight with Laurence, and then not be dissapointed with a 50% fight with a cleric beast on fire and 50% fight with a non-cheesable uglier Quelaag on even more fire xD
Because I realize there was likely a good purpose for doing it that way. I doubt it was laziness and it mentions he was a cleric beast beforehand. I mean just listen to the OST, I doubt it was a half hearted effort. It was probably just more about the lore than the actual fight in this case. I also say this because this wasn't an issue with the 30+ other bosses lol. The entire story for laurence is tragic, the fact he is just like the first boss resonates that fact for me. If that doesn't satisfy everyone, I mean there is always Ludwig to look at XD Also, Quelaag is probably less of a pain then Laurence was to be honest lol
Aaron Reid thats what I meant with "non-cheeable". hehehe I mean, it is in the lore that he became a cleric beast. I mean, thats WHY they are called ike that. I just expected Laurence to look like an even more crazy and twisted cleric beast. I mean, especially when they told us they took inspiration from wendigos, and those are fucking sick xD Amelia was a cleric beast and she was different, was she not? :D I mean, why must ALL cleric beasts but Amelia look the same? I never used the word lazy, but it really looks like they just took the easy route, like they just said "fuck it put a cleric beast there and well say it was laurence, someone will like that" xD To me, it was a real issue because they sold Laurence's tale particularly well. Then they just went "meh" at the end hehe ah well :D
So the most hilarious thing happened, after a 2 month hiatus of me playing Bloodborne I came back to the game, went after Laurence and beat it on my first try. I couldn't believe it, the feeling was epic.
yugioh guy idk man, did OoK solo in 3-4 tries. I guess it's different for people but I really dislike boss fights vs beasts because of how much RNG it is.
+Beast 比斯特 It's surely better than simply recoloring Smelter Demon in blue, but I don't really see how Cleric Beast 2.0 is all that unique. The first half of the fight just gives all the old Cleric Beast attacks fire effects, just like how Firesage Demon gave fire effects to Asylum Demon's moveset in Dark Souls 1. Their basic moves and swipes and stuff are exactly the same. The second legless half turns Laurence into an absolute pushover. It still feels like a lazy rehash, only slightly less lazy than Smelter Demon 2.0. I expected a new boss design entirely, especially for a character like Laurence who the vanilla game made me want to learn more about and fight.
+brightsuperstition Please stop calling game developers lazy because of one or two reskinned bosses. It nothing compared to the rest of the game, so don't focus on one "negative" aspect and embrace the countless positive ones. Palette swaps were a thing in japanese games since the beginning, but nowadays everyone lose their minds over one or two similar bosses.
Hyroth1337 on japanese games? because most enemies and most "bosses" in western games are reskinned or puzzles of the same pieces... just think at the "thugs" of Uncharted 3 that were mostly twin brothers!...
That boss battle is the most difficult I have faced so far. I tried to beat him without watching videos, without reading tricks and tips but it didn't work out at all. So I started to watch videos and read tips about it and figure out how to beat him. Guess what...result was still the same. I managed to beat Gehrman on NG+ the first time and it was "really" the first time I fought him (NG: I went for the "normal" ending and let him kill me). Few vials left to kill the Moon Presence so I died and decided, before going back to battle, to try that DLC "Old hunters" I never tried before. Long story short: my level was already pretty high (170) with 50 vit, 50 str, 35 endurance. Weapons: Saw Cleaver +10 and pretty decent Gems. Charred Hunter Set (best armor against fire I think) And yet... Damn guys...took me 67 attempts to beat him! (usually took me about 3 to 5 attempts to beat bosses). I am still dreaming of those beasty screams and him crawling back at me. I just couldn't do that second part when he loses his legs. Crazy fight. I still need to fight Orphan of Kos. I truly hope he will not be as hard or...even worse! Anyways if that can help people like me who hard a really hard time to bring him down, here is what I did (just another strategy among many others of cours): Used two weapons: -First part: summoned Valtr to help me out and used the Saw Cleaver +10 with Bolt Paper. Reason why I picked that one: good damage vs beasts and fast weapon. Whenever I was hitting his butt I could easily hit him like 5 or 6 times in a row while turning around him (hitting sometimes 4000 of hp). So first part was usually quickly over. Once the legs are gone, Valtr is gone pretty fast as well (if he manages to stay alive that long). -Once the legs are gone: my ultimate advice here is simply one word: patience. I used the bow whenever he was spitting fire at me. Damage was not huge (low on bloodtinge) so it was around 200 but 300+ avec he finishes his crawl attack. Used all my 20 bullets but it took some pretty HP from him away. Then back to Saw Cleaver with bolt paper. Hit him (video is useful here) when he is spitting fire. Advantage of Saw Cleaver: fast weapon so you can hit him twice at least and perhaps three times. But make sure your health is at max! If somehow it doesn't work out (and it happens often if your timing is not perfect), you will pay the price. Worst thing that can happen: hit him after he spits fire and do not run fast enough: you might be stuck in a corner of the arena or against a wall: game over again. So: just hit him when you are almost sure you can but just twice with a fast weapon. And repeat. Just take your time. When you then see "Prey Slaughtered" you just feel like you can go on with your life again :):) --need a break though!-- Hope it helps a bit!
The first versions of those examples had fire to begin with didn't they? Laurence was more aggressive to me (a raging mass on ng+6) and his attack set after he's bisected didn't make it that much easier to kill him. It was easier, but not by much.
Little tip for anyone struggling badly - Equip the impurity rune (the league rune), this will let you summon Valtr NPC for this boss fight. Having him there to take agro off you so you can wail on him makes it 3x easier to take him down
+Antiyoukai Yeah he'll never survive the whole fight, but I found if you actually work with him to try keep laurence switching agro between both of you, you can get Valtr so survive until he goes into his last phase which is more manageable than his first phase I think
this bitch is easily the hardest boss I have faced ever. ng6 i was level like 280 and he was one shotting me with ease. leveled up to 364 all consumables gone, and no more insight left. I finally got a kill you before you kill me moment and was so stoked I was screaming at the tv.
"Big-ass monster. Just hack at its legs like any other." (monster's legs come off and lava comes out of the stump) "Okay, maybe not like any other. . ."
It may be a nightmare and a half to fight this guy, but the battle is really rather beautiful. From the opening cinematic where he covers his face with one claw and reaches feebly out to you with the other all the way to the end, where he's crawling desperately by his arms, vomiting blood and fire across the stone floor.
Underrated opinion... this is my favorite boss in the game. Laurence feels like the perfect endgame upgrade to the first boss we ever fought, Cleric Beast, along with a completely different 2nd phase. Not to mention, the music gives me mega goosebumps.
Im on Laurence's side on this one. He was laying there, minding his own business, obviously taking an AWESOME nap. Then this hunter rocks in, wakes him up, and attacks him. You can even see his body posture, he groggily gets up, rubs his face to try and wake up, and yawns. Yeah, those werent roars, they were yawns.
I really like the ending of this boss fight.Laurence loses his legs, starts bleeding lava and sad music starts playing.I left a note there:"Wondrous Pity,it is all thanks to Inquisitiveness".And I think its fine that hes a reskin. The skull which is found in the main game cannot be changed. Its a cleric beast's skull.I like to think all vicars turned to cleric beasts. The first cleric beast is the male form and the Amelia one is female form.
To be honest I'm not sure but I've finished the game 6 or 7 times based on some items I have. So it makes sense I guess the bosses do phenomenal damage.
Bookends, Cleric Beast, the first boss I ever fought in the game and Laurence was the last boss I defeated in the game (couldn't beat him on NG, but finally nailed him on NG+). For those having trouble: 1. Keep to his right side (the one with the withered arm), his most dangerous attacks are less likely to hit you there 2. Remember that most of his attacks have noticeable delay and getting whacked while in a dodge recovery frame deals extra damage 3. Wait for the two-hand grab or the three-hit ground pound, at the end he lowers his head far enough to hit him there and you'll set up a critical attack soon enough 4. Concentrate on breaking one limb after another. He's helpless for a few seconds afterwards and he'll waste time to do a healing move which is another opportunity for free hits 5. When he's lost his legs, the only really dangerous attack is the left-hand overhead smash which has nasty tracking for everything else keep to his right, especially the tantrum attack. It's better to risk fire damage than getting hitstunned to death
Ok no, this thing is impossible on NG+3. It takes WAY more then just running up like a madman and swinging away. 1 or 2 shots and your dead, even with Charred set. How is it that every video I find on RUclips for boss fighting strategies, they just run up like their level 300 playing on NG?
I agree man. I have 100% of the main game and 98% of the DLC. Laurence is the only thing I am missing, and I cannot do it. I'm on NG+3, and even at level 251 he two-shots me, and I barely do over 200 damage per hit to him with my rakuyo. This is the only boss I've fought in bloodborne that I haven't enjoyed. I absolutely detest this fight, it's not fun and it's not fair -_-
+Captain Damnitt You must havent battle this boss yet. This boss fight is nothing like Vicar Amelia. Especially the second half. Damn spammer of range fire and gap closer.
This boss is so fucking cruel on ng+7. This is the only boss in the history of the series that genuinely gives me a dislike for those who designed it. It crosses the line between 'hard but rewarding' into just being fucking mean. Everything one shots you, and in his second stage his shitty little extended arm slam attack tracks to a stupid extent, it just all feels like a mean attempt to break you, and not an 'epic challenge.' The second stage would be really really hard if he didn't also shit, spit, radiate, and piss lava the entire time. I've lost count of the amount of times I've gotten him to about 5 hits from dead, to accidentally dodge into his ass lava, get stunlocked, and then proceed to be one shotted by any of his attacks. Fuck this shit.
I feel you man. I made my goal to beat every boss solo on ng+7 and am stuck at him for at least 2 days. Laurence is just really cheap, especially his second stage flame-shitting stunlocking bullshit. And his aoe tracking is the most broken thing when compared to the damage other bosses put out for the same tracking. I've always beaten him with Evelyn+BMA his ugly face and crit the shit out of him as soon as he heals. Second stage is Old Hunters Bone time, always stick to his No-fap-arm and dodge. I felt the whirligig saw to work wonders against him, but ng+7 makes me want to break the controller.
Shinseiryugen Ended up beating him after about 6-7 hours of accumulative attempts. After I beat him, I leaped from my desk chair and haven't played Bloodborne since. That was multiple months ago. Plan to go back to it one of these days :P but now that I've beaten every boss NG+7 I've done everything I've ever wanted to with the game.
+Shinseiryugen a little tip for his shit-lava stage, circle left. Like you said, stay at his no fap hand and continuously move left and his lava crawl CANNOT hit you.
+Icantdothatrightnow Yea, his only "dangerous attack" is the huge windup 100% accurate tracking ground pound with 100 km range. But yea, thx for the tip, what weapon did u use?
+Marshall Biss I gave in and just Beckoned someone. This boss is aids. only boss in the game I couldn't solo, that includes all the other dlc bosses even orphan of Kos is easier, not much but the fight is at least fun.
This has got to be NG. He was barley scratching you man, I saw you get hit like 4 times and still have more than a quarter health. On NG+7 it's 1-2 shot village on a 99 vitality build. The hardest boss I ever fought in any Souls/Borne game. Before him it was Fume Knight on NG+7. But Laurence literally wrecks every boss, fucking ever.
I like the potential tie-in with theme and lore showing his blood basically on fire. Same with Maria's. I wonder if DS3 will feature a form of great old one?
I can't do it. I guess I need to go grind for a few hours or some shit. Level 163 with a +10 ludwig's blade. Not happening. It took me like 12 attempts just to get him past the 90% ish mark. SO much aoe damage... This is actually my last boss as well cause I was tricked by the hidden skull. Everything else went down quite easily after I figured out their attack patterns, but this asshole? I'll come back in a week when I'm a little less salty. >.
wow you beated him wish i did too i gave up cause i lost all my insight cause i kept summoning valtr but when Laurence is at phase 2 he never heals and dies behind laurence
Idk how you get so lucky lol. There were so many times I was like "Dodge now.... same attack dodge it it's really easy... COME ON STOP FALLING FOR THAT STUPID SHIT!!!" lol. This guy is super mean for a Blades of Mercy user :[ his 2nd form just completely destroys you! And I got so many feels watching poor Laurence stumble and then lose his legs. Kinda like watching a poor helpless animal trying it's best to fend off a wolf (even though Laurence isn't helpless... HES AN ASSHOLE!!)
I Saw Cleavered this guy down to about 1000 health. Then I kept my distance and unloaded two bone marrow ash cannon balls in his face (I haven't leveled the cannon much yet). After 10-15 tries, I finally brought this guy down. Huge burst of adrenaline!
it's amazing how just some text and very small design choices on screen can lead to so much disappointment. Honestly, If they had just called the boss "nightmare keeper" or something vague, made him the first boss you face in the DLC, and maybe given him less health this would have made for a fun intro fight to this extra section. From a game progess perspective this would have made it more understandable as the cleric beast is usually the first boss you face in the game (although you can go straight to Gascoigne), and this obvious re-skin would be a more difficult and cinematic upgrade intro boss. Having Lawrence be an NPC on his last legs or corpse we find would have been more in line with the horrific and sometimes depressing nature of these games. Instead, we have to accept that Lawrence is another cleric beast with moves that are ruined by the arena fighting with camera constantly (something they could have fixed from the first cleric beast) and making him feel less significant as we have already seen this creature. The saving grace for this fight is the last third, Which is unique and made me pity the boss quite a bit. I only wish a majority of the fight had played out like that, because at this point most player are probably tired of fighting flailing beast creatures over and over
this boss fight is pretty good, but as for the npc's or characters in this dlc, im very disappointed and dissatisfied. we never get to see runesmith caryll, Archibald, irrevent izzy or at least the owner of the old hunter bone. and the other byrgenwerth scholars are absent, i can understand why micolash wasnt here because he was already trapped in another nightmare
+Brogre Missionary actually, it's hinted at who the old hunter bone belonged to, and they are in the dlc *cough* Maria *cough* (Her armor descriptions and the old hunter bone match eachother, also she is able to naturally use quickstep in the fight without a bone)
I've fought this boss and Orphan of Kos a good 50 times each on NG+5 and can barely get them below 50% health. You can't help but wonder after dying repeatedly for hours on these enemies, "Why am I doing this?"
One of only two bosses in Soulsborne (yes I know people hate that term but I use it for the sake of convenience), that forced me to use a summon, at least on NG+. The other boss that I had to summon for was Lud and Zallen the kings pets from DS2. Fuck those things
+Giant Squidy I know man. Look at my post. Drove me crazy. Thought I was over-leveled as well. Most enemies where easily killed. Did not really feel a big challenge with the DLC except a bit with lady Maria who gave me a bit of a hard time. I was about to give up, really. But I just couldn't. I had spent too much time on bloodborne not to finish the game (guess you know the feeling). So keep up the fight, find your own way but if that can help: -Charred Hunter Set -Took two runes to add blood vial (+3 and +4 so I ended up with 27 blood vials) and extra HP rune. Run away from him when you can and heal a lot. I made sure I was at full HP when I was attacking. Let me know when he is down. Took we a LOT of time....Good luck! It IS possible.
Lol Ikr I'm level 250 (Not sure what NG I think im about a NG6 or 7) and this guy and Orphan 2 shot me. This must be NG1 or 2 with him being very over levelled.

With all the work that FromSoftware puts into their design, it's obvious that Laurence isn't just a "reskinned cleric beast" without it being intentional.
Me too. Actually pretty much all bosses have been like that on Ng+++. The enemies are fun and challenging, the bosses are freaking necrophiliac rapists. NG on the other hand is a walk in the park
Right? I don't know about anyone else, but I always get the closest on my first attempt. I'll retry, thinking that it's not that bad. Then before you know it, they'll one shot me before I could even lay a single god damn hit on them
Elizabeth Friday he had most likely 40 plus points in vitality and a good bit in endurance too. I walked in this place going 30 vitality and 25 endurance 40 40 quality build I slaughtered everything thus far next in line is this guy.... I got slaughtered... 2 hits down...
I'm up against this sanctimonious bastard on NG+....I was SO close to beating him and even have a pattern for his stage 2. Gotta say, nice to have a challenge.
+Fat, Fatter and the Fattest Valentine Yeah, that's what I thought. I was thinking if I should continue my save which has level a 150+ character on NG +1.
How the hell did you do this?? I am level 251 on NG+3 and after 63 tries I deemed him impossible without multiplayer I refuse to believe what I just watched
+skysands2008 Not really. The hole in the skull in the grand cathedral is in the same spot where the fire is escaping from that same spot. If the lore is bullshit, it's not the game developer's fault. It's your fault for interpreting the lore incorrectly. You probably believed the cleric beast was ludwig, but bosses with the names of their former selves, I.E. Vicar Amelia are going to keep their names even after transforming into a horrid beast. That should have been your first clue.
+TomatoDragonPSN It is possible that the bloodletting beast is actually Laurence's body in the "real world" while this, his soul basically, exists in the nightmare. After all, we know the skull in the Grand Cathedral is Laurence's and Bloodletting beast's name in Japanese is something like "source of the beast plague."
You had one job, Laurence. One... F**kin'... Job. Fear... the old... F**kin'... blood... Laurence ! AND NOT... EMBRACE... IT ! ! !

+Riley Kard you were supposed to bring justice to yharnam, not leave it in darkness!

Anyone else here thought that Lawernce just got up with a hangover at the beginning?
+Jordan Smith I though he was like: "Oh for f*ck sake, who opened the door?!" XD
+Jordan Smith Hahahahah..... Yeah, kinda of how I wake-up too Sunday mornings.
Lol! Now I can never look at this cutscenes the same again. XD

He just got back from a night of clubbing, apparently things got a little heated when he chugged a few too many blood vials.
Damnit, I just want to listen to the music, stop screaming Laurence.

It met all of my requirements being the following:
-Does it fit the lore? Yes.
-Is it different then its counterpart version? Yes.
You have no clue what low quality is. You're not an artist. Your opinion and tastes aren't fact. Get over yourself you fool.
I always find it really cute how people spin after winning :>
I do it in real life too.
Grizwords I jump up and down and squeal like a 4 year old
Haha! This is also an acceptable response.
Grizwords I do have a friend that throws the controller to the ground like a football, though.
This is NOT and acceptable response...
Spin 2 win baby
"I will never forget our adage."
Forgets adage.
for all those saying he is just Cleric Beast 2.0.
+Aaron Reid Or not. xD
He shouldve been so much more.
And like you agree, we got nothing xD
I have no idea how you can say you were waiting so eagerly for a fight with Laurence, and then not be dissapointed with a 50% fight with a cleric beast on fire and 50% fight with a non-cheesable uglier Quelaag on even more fire xD
If that doesn't satisfy everyone, I mean there is always Ludwig to look at XD
Also, Quelaag is probably less of a pain then Laurence was to be honest lol
Aaron Reid thats what I meant with "non-cheeable". hehehe
I mean, it is in the lore that he became a cleric beast. I mean, thats WHY they are called ike that. I just expected Laurence to look like an even more crazy and twisted cleric beast. I mean, especially when they told us they took inspiration from wendigos, and those are fucking sick xD Amelia was a cleric beast and she was different, was she not? :D
I mean, why must ALL cleric beasts but Amelia look the same? I never used the word lazy, but it really looks like they just took the easy route, like they just said "fuck it put a cleric beast there and well say it was laurence, someone will like that" xD
To me, it was a real issue because they sold Laurence's tale particularly well. Then they just went "meh" at the end hehe ah well :D
After six hours of trying I've decided Laurence is impossible on NG+7.
+Zeal In Christ The insulting fact is that this fannyjack makes the hotdog of the old lords in Defiled a mere schoolyard bully from 3rd grade
Yeah I'm on Ng+5 and can't fuckin do it
Jack Luxon Believe it or not I finally somehow beat him
Conclusion: Vial slapping
man ng+8 it is possible
man ng+8 it is possible
You think the flaming body is a reference to how many people used the molotov to beat the Cleric Beast?
LOL
Yes :)
Maybe *Laurence* is an amalgamation of all cleric beasts that got molotoved.
Jerome Talor Or maybe Laurence turned into a Cleric Beast in Old Yharnam, and was burned to death the night Old Yharnam was burned to the ground.
Why not both.
Laurence was going to be a longer boss fight, but he had to split.
seems like the real boss is the camera here
Welcome to Bloodborne
Welcome to Soulsborne*
People don't understand that sometime's it's better not to lock on to your enemy in Bloodborne/Dark Souls.
Elementual I only lock on this damn beast when I want to fire at him
I know for a fact this guy almost shit himself at 05:26
Can confirm.
he's like me when i wake up in the morning
Jel In flames?
So the most hilarious thing happened, after a 2 month hiatus of me playing Bloodborne I came back to the game, went after Laurence and beat it on my first try. I couldn't believe it, the feeling was epic.
now try him on NG+
+The Metronome Already did, I beat him in NG+ first with my original character. It was a bitch, almost 20-25 tries
Saint Link I've never disliked a boss so much and never raged so hard before after killing one like laurence on NG+.
+The Metronome The OoK was worse.
yugioh guy idk man, did OoK solo in 3-4 tries. I guess it's different for people but I really dislike boss fights vs beasts because of how much RNG it is.
At first I was like "really a re-skin?" But this actually seems like a pretty epic fight.
+Wulftactical unlike a boss in dks2 that i wont name......
+Jef Drouin But I will.
Blue flame Smelter Demon.
Yep...
+Jef Drouin
Or the top quality Dark Souls 1 bosses, Asylum Demon, Exploding Asylum Demon, and Asylum Demon Except On Fire.
spookyscaryskeletons ya forgot about those lol.
Allow me to summarize this boss,
Ahem...
REEEEEEEEEEE!!!
BOOM POW CRASH WHAM EXPLOSION!!!
DEATH!!!
DEATH OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!!
MILLIONS ARE DEAD!
+Brotherhood Knight It was pretty boss
Derek Boad GAME OVER YEEEEEEAAAAHHHH
HUNTERS GET OUT REEEEEEEEEEE!!!
and then after killing lawrence instead of flashing "prey slaughtered" the screen flashes "lord of cinder fallen"
take notes Dark Souls 2, this is how you redo a main game boss in the DLC, not just throw a different color on it.
+Beast 比斯特
It's surely better than simply recoloring Smelter Demon in blue, but I don't really see how Cleric Beast 2.0 is all that unique.
+Beast 比斯特
dark souls 2 hate is so 2014, now it's trendy "absolute love to battlefront"...
True. At least Lawerence provides a moveset change.
Hyroth1337
on japanese games? because most enemies and most "bosses" in western games are reskinned or puzzles of the same pieces...
just think at the "thugs" of Uncharted 3 that were mostly twin brothers!...
Long story short:
my level was already pretty high (170) with 50 vit, 50 str, 35 endurance.
Weapons: Saw Cleaver +10 and pretty decent Gems.
Charred Hunter Set (best armor against fire I think)
And yet...
Anyways if that can help people like me who hard a really hard time to bring him down, here is what I did (just another strategy among many others of cours):
Used two weapons:
-First part: summoned Valtr to help me out and used the Saw Cleaver +10 with Bolt Paper.
What's up with fromsoft and those ''just put some flame on the first ''tutorial''boss'' bosses?
Lmao you obviously have not fought this fucker, otherwise you would have realized that he is a cleric beast on raging steroids
The first versions of those examples had fire to begin with didn't they? Laurence was more aggressive to me (a raging mass on ng+6) and his attack set after he's bisected didn't make it that much easier to kill him. It was easier, but not by much.
***** why story changing? Why change the pre-set history? That would make the core game inconsistent. Or you mean like flesh it out more, right?
+n30sp4rk I guess it isn't just them, the same happened in Super Mario Galaxy
***** Except fire sage demon has no second phase where he loses his lower half ,then crawls and starts to breathe lava
Little tip for anyone struggling badly - Equip the impurity rune (the league rune), this will let you summon Valtr NPC for this boss fight. Having him there to take agro off you so you can wail on him makes it 3x easier to take him down
+Pointslhalsbirnbarnd haha I definitely considered murdering him as well, but decided his helmet wasnt cool enough that I'd end up wearing it
+Pointslhalsbirnbarnd You didn't have to kill him for his helmet.
+hoobalooo And then he gets murdered halfway through the fight
+Antiyoukai Yeah he'll never survive the whole fight, but I found if you actually work with him to try keep laurence switching agro between both of you, you can get Valtr so survive until he goes into his last phase which is more manageable than his first phase I think
I died at the last phase once
And I never have been able to go back since...
Am I the only one who likes this boss?
Nah, I do too, I thought he was a lot of fun.
Nah
His design is cool, just an asshole to fight
My favourite bloodborne boss
I actually like his second phase fight. Hate the first one. If only he goes second phase sooner, this could be better fight.
The screeches in this game are amazing!
this bitch is easily the hardest boss I have faced ever. ng6 i was level like 280 and he was one shotting me with ease. leveled up to 364 all consumables gone, and no more insight left. I finally got a kill you before you kill me moment and was so stoked I was screaming at the tv.
allen33and88 I don't know why maybe it is because I can relate to how you feel but I just burst out laughing at your comment lol
"Big-ass monster. Just hack at its legs like any other."
(monster's legs come off and lava comes out of the stump)
"Okay, maybe not like any other. .
The coolest boss... Now even cooler.
What NG is this? I'm level 250 and this dude kills me in 2 or 3 hits yet you tanked his whole combo O_o
are you on ng+4 ?
To be honest I'm not sure but I've finished the game 6 or 7 times based on some items I have. So it makes sense I guess the bosses do phenomenal damage.
Bookends, Cleric Beast, the first boss I ever fought in the game and Laurence was the last boss I defeated in the game (couldn't beat him on NG, but finally nailed him on NG+).
For those having trouble:
1. Keep to his right side (the one with the withered arm), his most dangerous attacks are less likely to hit you there
2. Remember that most of his attacks have noticeable delay and getting whacked while in a dodge recovery frame deals extra damage
3. Wait for the two-hand grab or the three-hit ground pound, at the end he lowers his head far enough to hit him there and you'll set up a critical attack soon enough
4. Concentrate on breaking one limb after another. He's helpless for a few seconds afterwards and he'll waste time to do a healing move which is another opportunity for free hits
5. When he's lost his legs, the only really dangerous attack is the left-hand overhead smash which has nasty tracking for everything else keep to his right, especially the tantrum attack. It's better to risk fire damage than getting hitstunned to death
his 2nd transformation is sooo HARD...
I absolutely detest this fight, it's not fun and it's not fair -_-
Is it a theme for FromSoft to reskin a boss in all their DLCs now?
there's been a reskin in every fromsoft game
3 times in dark souls 1 actually
but because of the second phase i honestly doubt this is a reskin
well "doubt" is a shitty word for it because it is a reskin but not effortless
+Captain Damnitt Please play Destiny The Taken Reskin that game reskins almost everything i'm not even kidding...
+Captain Damnitt You must havent battle this boss yet. This boss fight is nothing like Vicar Amelia. Especially the second half. Damn spammer of range fire and gap closer.
Andy Fate I meant that it was a reskin of the Cleric Beast, which it is.
+Icantdothatrightnow Nicely done bruh :D I still haven't beaten him ffs
+Shinseiryugen a little tip for his shit-lava stage, circle left. Like you said, stay at his no fap hand and continuously move left and his lava crawl CANNOT hit you.
+Icantdothatrightnow Yea, his only "dangerous attack" is the huge windup 100% accurate tracking ground pound with 100 km range. But yea, thx for the tip, what weapon did u use?
This Boss is Fucking bullshit on Ng+. I just want my beasthood rune godamnit.
dude I fucking feel you on that one.
+Marshall Biss I gave in and just Beckoned someone. This boss is aids. only boss in the game I couldn't solo, that includes all the other dlc bosses even orphan of Kos is easier, not much but the fight is at least fun.
I'm on ng+9 :'(
don't we all
+bndn989 I feel for you man!
Is it me or cleric 2.0 theme is the cleric beast theme from the beta test (a.k.a the BETTER ONE)?
This has got to be NG. He was barley scratching you man, I saw you get hit like 4 times and still have more than a quarter health. On NG+7 it's 1-2 shot village on a 99 vitality build. The hardest boss I ever fought in any Souls/Borne game. Before him it was Fume Knight on NG+7. But Laurence literally wrecks every boss, fucking ever.
the strategy, as seen in this video, is to be really overlevelled so you can tank the hits
just realised. Any particular reason Laurence is missing his eye? hence the right hand holding his face in the cutscene.
That moment when you Love any bloodborne video because only your Fellow Console byers played it
I like the potential tie-in with theme and lore showing his blood basically on fire.
Same with Maria's.
I wonder if DS3 will feature a form of great old one?
what's with From Software having at least something on fire in every game?
Musics too low. It's hurting the epicness of the fight.
It's kinda a reskin but still looks like a badass fight. Can't wait to play this!
If you listen carefully, you can hear beautiful music. Oh well. Lightning and screeching are good too
I can't do it. I'll come back in a week when I'm a little less salty. >.
a hung over version of the cleric beast thats on fire - I bet when it first met the hunter it said "where's my alkaseltzer?"
Poor Laurence :-( ... once just a good and devout man ... he's clearly in constant agony now :-(
wow you beated him wish i did too i gave up cause i lost all my insight cause i kept summoning valtr but when Laurence is at phase 2 he never heals and dies behind laurence
Great fight! One question...Ludwig’s holy blade or Moonlight’s holy blade? 🤔 Greetings and 👍🏻
I don't get it. How do you survive more than two hits in a row without falling over dead? Don't play this on NG+++?
The only way to finish a boss you've struggled for hours on. The jump attack.
Jesus Christ, he only have a hungover, loo, headache, burning throat and body, screaming. Clearly hungover ^^
I killed kos the orphan but still couldn't trigger the last boss fight why?
The worst enemy in this game is.... The Camera.
I swear, Laurence just spammed his almost undodge-able crawlattack in the 2nd phase whenever I got close to him.
How can you fight Laurence without the music at 10
I Saw Cleavered this guy down to about 1000 health. Then I kept my distance and unloaded two bone marrow ash cannon balls in his face (I haven't leveled the cannon much yet).
After 10-15 tries, I finally brought this guy down. Huge burst of adrenaline!
The love child of Cleric Beast and Queelag.
This thing is a living nightmare on anything higher than the base NG.
it's amazing how just some text and very small design choices on screen can lead to so much disappointment. I only wish a majority of the fight had played out like that, because at this point most player are probably tired of fighting flailing beast creatures over and over
What level are you and how did you manage to beat him in one go?
The theme in this fight seems to be like a remix of the cleric beast theme. Atleast in the first half, the second half seems like a new theme.
+bartbrink1996 is it the "rete sanguine sancte prae ista honos" part?
SPOILER
How do you get him to fight you?
I picked the item he was holding and he's still sleeping.
Need to return with Laurence's skull item. It's a while away.
+Grizwords What's your vit? I'm alteast 1210 right now
this boss fight is pretty good, but as for the npc's or characters in this dlc, im very disappointed and dissatisfied. we never get to see runesmith caryll, Archibald, irrevent izzy or at least the owner of the old hunter bone. and the other byrgenwerth scholars are absent, i can understand why micolash wasnt here because he was already trapped in another nightmare
+Brogre Missionary actually, it's hinted at who the old hunter bone belonged to, and they are in the dlc *cough* Maria *cough* (Her armor descriptions and the old hunter bone match eachother, also she is able to naturally use quickstep in the fight without a bone)
Man laurence looks like he has one big ass headache >.
Was your blade upgraded to the max?
I've fought this boss and Orphan of Kos a good 50 times each on NG+5 and can barely get them below 50% health. You can't help but wonder after dying repeatedly for hours on these enemies, "Why am I doing this?"
One of only two bosses in Soulsborne (yes I know people hate that term but I use it for the sake of convenience), that forced me to use a summon, at least on NG+. The other boss that I had to summon for was Lud and Zallen the kings pets from DS2. Fuck those things
just listen to the sound track and you know this is a tragedy
0:50
Tfw your alarm goes off
Did Laurence just wake up with a hangover or is it just me?
So Laurence decided to burn in the First Flame and became a Lord of Cinder now?
This boss two shots me when I'm way over-leveled for the DLC and you take hit after hit with little regards to dodging. What up with that?
+Giant Squidy I know man. Look at my post. Drove me crazy. Thought I was over-leveled as well. Most enemies where easily killed. Did not really feel a big challenge with the DLC except a bit with lady Maria who gave me a bit of a hard time. I was about to give up, really. But I just couldn't. I had spent too much time on bloodborne not to finish the game (guess you know the feeling). So keep up the fight, find your own way but if that can help:
-Charred Hunter Set
-Took two runes to add blood vial (+3 and +4 so I ended up with 27 blood vials) and extra HP rune.
Lol Ikr I'm level 250 (Not sure what NG I think im about a NG6 or 7) and this guy and Orphan 2 shot me. This must be NG1 or 2 with him being very over levelled.
Was this the first Cleric Beast?!
damn, that health bar is huge. Same with stamina. What level is this character
why does Laurence's second swipr always insta kill you? I don't get this lol.
My favourite boss from the entire soulsborne series
so laurence was a lord of cinder?
With all the work that FromSoftware puts into their design, it's obvious that Laurence isn't just a "reskinned cleric beast" without it being intentional.
what level did you do this on? I'm on NG+++, and level 167, I'm having the hardest time with this guy
Same here.
Then before you know it, they'll one shot me before I could even lay a single god damn hit on them
It makes sense now. This is an enemy that does lots of damage really quickly. If I'm more balls to the wall like you, I'll kill it. Thanks!
"boss #2" As in he is the 2nd boss of the DLC, or just the 2nd boss you are uploading?
Second boss I encountered, and you have to get an item beyond the first boss to take this one on (skull of someone or other)
Thank you very much for responding :)
glad to know its not a 100% rehashed cleric beast
Dude your Bloodborne boss fights make me so nervous. Like HOW DID YOU NOT DIE
+Elizabeth Friday I rely on brute force and stupidity. It's a paradigm that works.
...I mean I guess
Elizabeth Friday he had most likely 40 plus points in vitality and a good bit in endurance too. I walked in this place going 30 vitality and 25 endurance 40 40 quality build I slaughtered everything thus far next in line is this guy.... I got slaughtered... 2 hits down...
Nice fight hombre ;-)
Dude you must have a disgusting amount of health. Mine's 47, 48 and his two hit combo in his final form will kill me instantly
I think he has all the damage reduction runes on there is no way you could survive all those hits without them
Strong style! I like it!
Considering the effect laurence has on the storyline Im not happy his encounter is a reskin, granted the last phase is pretty cool.
+MrAdeist no you cant fight "his body"
+MrAdeist His body isn't what's in the chalice dungeons. Why are you promoting a theory that the dlc has proven false?
+MrAdeist That's the fucking Bloodletting Beast! There's another Bloodletting Beast at the end of the Lower Pthumeru Chalice with a head!
I'm up against this sanctimonious bastard on NG+....I was SO close to beating him and even have a pattern for his stage 2. Gotta say, nice to have a challenge.
Are you playing on NG + ??
+Facefull Void Probably. Just by looking at the change of the size of the bar after the first cannon hit, the boss has close to 19k hp.
+Fat, Fatter and the Fattest Valentine Yeah, that's what I thought. I was thinking if I should continue my save which has level a 150+ character on NG +1.
+Facefull Void I'm sure that's perfect for ng+ as long if you have decent gems. I'm doing the dlc at level 75 by+5 with my max gems.
+The Mantisity I hope so too! All I'm really worried about are those NPC hunters scattered across the map.
+Facefull Void no he's not on NG+
How the hell did you do this??
I am level 251 on NG+3 and after 63 tries I deemed him impossible without multiplayer
I refuse to believe what I just watched
Why is he on fire? Did he attempt to link the first flame? O_O
Cleric Beast? Again?
Atleast the move set in his second phase is different. :p
Always thought Laurence was the headless bloodletting beast in the chalice dungeons.
billy Siravo jr Agreed.
+TomatoDragonPSN
Tells you how bullshit the lore guys are.
skysands2008 Not really. It seemed to make sense, until the dlc struck.
What pisses you off about this boss is the final form when he's chopped in half. He hits like a truck so one wrong move he'll one shot you.
when he shits lava I shit my pants
