@@RaRa-xv2bu It is abundantly clear that the Koran has been changed and has numerous anomalies. Diacritical marks, for instance, were virtually non-existent in the early manuscripts and were added later. The Koran was standardised in Cairo and re-published in 1924 (standardisation implies differences existed). There are several textual differences today between, for instance, the Hafs and Warsh Korans. See the relevant chapter in Ibn Warraq's book Virgins? What Virgins? in which examples of such differences have been directly scanned from Hafs and Warsh Korans.
@@RaRa-xv2buI'm not familiar with Crona's work, but Spencer's credibility is unaffected. He did not assert that Muhammad never existed. He doesn't dispute that such a prophet was active in seventh century Arabia, but cautions that this is 'by no means the same thing as saying that the prophet as we come to know him in the biographical literature of Islamic tradition is a historical figure' (Spencer, Did Muhammad Exist?, p. 6). The nuance of Spencer's argument seems to have escaped you.
This is an excellent book for the serious scholar, as well as the novice who is simply wanting to read the Quran and gain insights into its meaning, history, and structure. Much of what you want to know is here and provides a springboard for deeper study.

You wait 1200 years for a critical Qur'an and then 2 come along together: Robert Spencer's 'Critical Qur'an' and Usama Dakdok's 'Generous Qur'an'. No doubt they will both be fascinating.
If you like history, I reccommend "Sword & Scimitar" by Raymond Ibrahim, and "In the Shadow of the Sword" by Tom Holland, to tell both about the bloody history of Islam and also how it possibly came into existence, as a mix of various heretical beliefs.

I've read all of The Critical Qur'an. It is brilliant! Thank you Robert Spencer. BTW, you have to be careful when you read it because the pages are so thin and fragile and the gold print on the covers and spine wear off easily. On mine only half of the writing is still on it. It is so hard to seperate two pages because they are so thin so I was so careful when reading it. I've also read Did Muhammad Exist and I love it. Those two are in a proud place on my bookshelf. Love your work Robert Spencer.
Jay Smith, THANK YOU for writing the book! Just 1 thing, though, for your next edition: Aside from including on each page chapter-title (ex. "The Light"), please also include the chapter-number (ex. "24").
They are afraid to be transparent with their own text. It should be the opposite. If their words are pure and true then the deeper study of it should be celebrated. As we know, that is not the case with islam. Hiding, deceit and censorship is their way. Pure DARKNESS.

Jay misunderstands: A critical edition is not "against" anything. It merely provides a scholarly source by comparing variant readings, and the like. This is certainly superior to just having a hardcopy of one of the English paraphrases (can they really be called translations, they seem to alter so much to hide difficulties ?? ). (Pickthall's Quran is possibly one of the more accurate ones, he was living in a time when if you were well off and had a privileged education, you tended not to care what others might think). Spencer's notes help explain how things are interpreted by muslims, and some problems.
I know you did not seek my opinion... If we acknowledge the presence of two distinct layers of the qur-an (chants) - rasm and diacritic - we need to then take the translations (which were developed through the diacritic layer lens) with a pinch of salt. The diacritics (added under the Abbasid patronage, late 9th century or early 10th century) have introduced many changes, not intended by the rasm layer. A major example: The word of interest is 'kutub' (=books). If an aleph is present after 't', it becomes 'kitab' (single book). The rasm layer has nearly 250 'kutub'. When the diacritic layer was added, a floating 'aleph' was added to over 95% of the instances. So, except in about five cases, the rasm 'books' has been morphed into 'book'. What should have been 'People of the Books' became 'People of the Book', etc.

It’s insane that a religion based off of the critique that Jews and Christians corrupted their books and should be abrogated by the Quran, doesn’t allow any criticism of themselves.
Probably because it all got tied in with imperial politics early-ish. That is, from a historical point of view, looking at Shoemaker's "Creating the Quran", there is fairly reliable evidence that General Hajjaj, a rather coarse-hearted military man, set the key version, that was then used going forwards historically (but with likely other changes). It was part of a project for the supremacy of the new better organized imperium of Abd-El-Malik and successors. The alleged earlier Uthman revision may even have been a fiction as a PR job to present a respectable appearance to Hajjaj's work on previous material (blood-and-iron warlords don't tend to be very much about ideas of love, justice etc), it seems that hadithal idea may have come from one scholar close to the regime.

I know you are busy as a foremost expositor of Islamic problems from a Christian viewpoint. But I have a question. some decade and a half ago, I went to visit a friend and colleague (engineer) who was from Peshawar and had had a stroke. All those at the hospital were his son and wife, coworkers that were from Pakistan and were Muslim and at least one Imam. This was in Fort Worth, but in that waiting room I was the fish out of water. My friend had privately expressed his dismay at the radical nature of the teachings of his mosque and he had stopped going there because of this. I think the appearance of an anglo and presumably a Christian (I am) caused disquiet among the group. The imam who was a physician (also a presumably well educated) stepped up to challenge me, though I had only come to express my desire that Aktar would get well. The point of attack was that Ishmael was the child of promise. I set about to rebut this from scripture. A coworker from the plant stepped in to diffuse the situation and stop the dialogue. Why do you think this was the point of attack? I am curious. This man was probably more bookish than the muslims to which you refer.
Hey. Is there anyone well-versed in either Islam in literature or Islamic history? They would either be willing to take a look at part of a book I’ve worked on, or at least direct me to some resources to be able to help me to evaluate if my portrayal of Muslim slavery, particularly during the ottoman period, is accurate?
From my understanding in this video, two things I have doubt here is Surah 19:33 which in this video mentions that 'Jesus did die' but rather if you lookup english translations of the same verse it says 'the day I die', which clearly doesn't mean the same thing. Secondly you mentioned something about a curse to Christians and Jews in the 7 fatiha verses, which in english translation doesn't clearly mention Jews or Christians in the words, and althoug it mentions something about asking for guidance in the prayer so that one may not go astray or feel the wrath of the almighty isn't clearly equivalent to referring to Jews or Christians, as any one in any religion can ask for the same guidance to not go astray or feel the wrath.

The eastern Mediterranean was Greek speaking. That's why the Gospels were written and transmitted in Greek. During the first century Hebrew was still the language in Judea alongside Greek. The Ebionites & Nazoreans had Hebrew versions of Matthew that were commented on by both Christian & Jewish scholars. Though the Greek is the official standard for the Gospel if you want to read Hebrew Matthew you can get a critical edition along with commentaries. Now concerning the Aramaic there still exists old Aramaic Gospels, but the official Peshitta harmonizes with the Greek. Though I do agree that understanding the Hebrew and Aramaic are important since there is less issue of translation continuity from old to new Testaments. I have read them nothing doctrinal or dogmatic changes though.
Christians don’t even accept the Hebrew Bible. They accept the Greek translation over the original. All New Testament authors quote Greek translations of the OT. All churchfathers didn’t know Hebrew. Christianity is a mess.
There are translations which do rely on Syrian christian Aramaic texts for the New Testament. It used to be thought that these were entirely derived from Greek, but now the scholars are having second thoughts about that (e.g. see Odon La Fontaine's in Mel's channel). These Aramaic texts seem to me to be slightly more emphatic about Christ's divinity ! However in the 1C Greek was more natural to use - an easy well developed lingua franca (none of the problems with a primitive script that the Quran had), the Old Testament had already been translated, many diaspora Jews spoke it, it was one of the 2 key languages of the Roman Empire, a main target audience in the "go out to all nations" directive of Jesus.
The muslims are very preoccupied with critiquing the Bible, yet they have NO original sources for their books, relying on fouth hand recollections of sunday school type material.
there's a problem with the mysterious letters hypothesis of lectionary referancing... the Arabic keep the same numeral value that the hebrew are using... I would guess the syro-aramaic... and many goup of letter don't make sense as numeral values... first number are counted from the unit to the if we look at sourah 7... it's alif lam mim tsad... which would be 31:40:90... how does it make sense as a referancing a lexionary? if mim tsad would be additive for 130 it would be alif lam lam qaf... unless the tsad is Dad instead and taken for 900... so it would be 31:940... now finding a book with 31 chapter and 940+ verse shouldn't be that hard to find... but it doesn't seam the right answer to that subject... someone claim it'S referance to the Mani's writing... of which we got nothing... but mabe it was that long...
Another view on the mysterious letters: (1) If one goes by the Sanaa palimpsest example, the surahs were arbitrarily created out of long scrolls - by inserting a line on the 'original page' to end/start a surah. (2) Early 1slamic texts/inscriptions show several occurrences of a word, at the end of the line, split and carried forward to the beginning of the next line. So abra at the end of the first line, and cadabra at the start of the next line. (3) Now check the Sanaa palimpsest, Q 2:265-268. The first 12 lines of the first page contain 6 instances of words splits across two lines. (4) When the Abbasids dismissed the Nazarene clergy (the qur-an writers), the new 'scholars' had no idea what the 'orphaned letters' at the very start of the first line of the surah meant. One needs to closely observe the Sanaa palimpsest to understand that there is nothing mysterious about the mysterious letters. But are they pronounced right? Almost certainly not. The pronunciation is entirely dependent on the diacritics (added under the Abbasids late 9th/early 10th century CE).

Is it not worth pondering upon as to why the ORIGINAL ARAMAIC GOSPEL cannot still be produced by the Christian scholars up to now? If I were a Christian, I would give a second look on my faith since I have no book from God to serve as my basis for my spirituality and religiosity. I would not hesitate to give a second thought by questioning the genuineness of the source of my faith which come only from the opinions and ideas of different men. How could it be that their words become the words of God? Am I in the right track? Or, should I now shift lane to erase the doubts bothering me? Or, should I choose procrastination until the original Aramaic Gospel would surface from oblivion? But my end is getting nearer and nearer every day. I have to act now and waste not a second. I have to choose the religion whose book comes from God. With that, I am sure that I am following the words of God, and not the words of men. I am certain now that I have a better place to go to. The Koran is patently human-made. It's full of passages that, even at he linguistic level, contain terms that defy understanding, even words that have no currency in Arabic or any known language. It's a text that is as fallible as its author(s).
The OT has yet to be translated. The little- but significant- parts Kamal Salibi has tells a different ‘story.’ 4 bible study books not to be missed. “The Bible Came from Arabia “, a good start. As simple a statement as “ The Quran came from Arabia” fully understandable.
The BIBLE in the eyes of JAY SMITH. According to Jay Smith is that he believed that there is really ONE ORIGINAL GOSPEL. Since he cannot find it, he assumed that the gospel of John is already that book. But his is only mere assumption. He failed to make any clear evidence to show that his assumption is correct. Hence, he has to show manuscripts in Aramaic as evidence for his assumption that the gospel of John is the already real Gospel of Pophet jESUs (pbuh). By his hasty assumption, he undoubtedly discarded the gospels of Mark, Matthew and Luke into useless books which have no more meaning to the whole Christendom, and hence not fit to be used as the basis of the religiosity of the Christians. According to Jay Smith the LETTERS OF PAUL are just MERE TAFSEER of the Old Testament and “other scriptures” (?). Tafseer means interpretation. If the letters of Paul are just mere tafseer, why is it they become the main core of the New Testament which comprised 90 percent of it. These should be written in a separate book. In the Islamic standard, no single tafseer is included in the Holy Qur’an. Hence, the letters of Paul must be written in a separate book. Jay Smith failed not elaborate as to what specific book or verse/s in the Old Testament that each letter is intended to for being a tafseer. He should have elaborated on the following letters of Paul: LETTERS OF PAUL TO THE DIFFERENT CHURCHES: 1). Romans - tafseer of what is it intended for? 2). Hebrews - tafseer of what is it intended for? 3). Corinthians - tafseer of what is it intended for? 4). Galatians - tafseer of what is it intended for? 5). There is one gospel. The gospel is a message (good news), not a particular book. The Bible is not viewed by Christians the way the Quran is viewed by Muslims. The book derives from the church, not the church from the book.
@@michaels4255 ... So, you are belying your very own Bible. Which of the 4 gospels you considered to be just one? But that is also how Jay Smith sees it. You are right about the gospel being the good news. If you say the book derives from the church, do you mean to say that it's the church who made it? Or simply, who authored it? I hate to say that's the only alibi the christians could think of because they have no original Gospel to show. The original Gospel is nowhere to be found. Not even a single manuscript was left of it. In other words, it was not recorded and preserved. Had it been recorded and preserved, we would have only one gospel in our hands today. And definitely, it is in Aramaic. It is a book sent down by God to Prophet jESUs (pbuh) to be preached to the children of Israel (Jews). It is a book of spiritual guidance from God. It is unlike the 4 gospels whose contents are nothing but holey biographies of Prophet jESUs (pbuh). -05-21-23
Nobody, even in the academia, had done a critical review of the Quran for public consumption until Robert Spenser. God bless RD
I've bought a number of Dr. Spencer's books and they are wonderful. This is another that should be bought.
Jay, PLEASE put up a list of books we should be reading/adding to our libraries, and a list of your library!
If you like history, I reccommend "Sword & Scimitar" by Raymond Ibrahim, and "In the Shadow of the Sword" by Tom Holland, to tell both about the bloody history of Islam and also how it possibly came into existence, as a mix of various heretical beliefs.
“The Final Theory: Rethinking Our Scientific Legacy “, Mark McCutcheon. “The Unique and Its Property “, Max Stirner/ Landstreicher translation. “The Bible Came from Arabia “, Kamal Salibi plus his 3 other bible study books. “No Treason: the Constitution of no Authority, 1,2, and 6”, Lysander Spooner.
The Reliance of the Traveller, ie the sharia manual. Very important! Lloyd de Jongh has an impressive library too.
I've read all of The Critical Qur'an. It is brilliant! Thank you Robert Spencer.
A major example:
The word of interest is 'kutub' (=books).

Even non Muslim scholars testify to the accurate transmission of the Quran. You can’t say that about Christians.

A major example:
The word of interest is 'kutub' (=books).

''THR IS GD''
"curse to Christians and Jews" The two groups are described in the prayer as follows: "not of those who EARNED YOUR ANGER, nor of those WHO WENT ASTRAY"
ALL the tafsir scholars are clear that the two groups being denigrated are Christians and Jews. Some quran translators even add the two groups in brackets (e.g. Mohsin Khan translation), while other qurans have a footnote at the bottom of the page, stating that those who 'earned your anger' are the Jews, and those 'who went astray' are the Christians.
A couple of tafsir entries:
" not the path of those against whom there is wrath namely the Jews and nor of those who are astray namely the Christians" Tafsir al-Jalalayn
"not the religion of the Jews who earned Your anger, ...nor the religion of the Christians who erred from Islam." Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
A hadith:
They follow the words reported for muhammed, "Narrated Adi bin Hatim: I asked Allah’s Messenger about the Statement of Allah: "Gharil maghdubi ‘alaihim [not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger]," he replied: "They are the Jews". And 2: "Walad dallin (nor of those who went astray)," he replied: "The Christians, and they are the ones who went astray". At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud.
All educated cult members know that when they pray this they are denigrating those two groups, but this is only a very mild insult compared to other passages in the quran, and the absolutely disgusting sermons preached by their clerics.
@@aaabrams1889 No. That is not the point. Point is, no diacritics results in a pretty severe change in meaning, and it isn't even "complementary".

I appreciate the courage of Robert Spencer. But, I would prefer reading a critical Quran by someone with a doctorate in comparative Semitic languages. Yet, this is our problem: we have courageous people who lack the proper linguistic qualifications.
A few Questions:
Was the Qur’an ment to be chanted like a lyrical poem?
Has anyone looked at the Quran in its literary styles? As the Torah and further books of the Old Testament have different styles of delivery were originally intended?
There were never indications from God to define them by chapter and verse, correct?
That is man’s annotation to be able to find specific topics and/or draw things out of context?
What is anyone’s insight on all this?

How I earnestly wish that there is now an original ARAMAIC GOSPEL because I am dying inside to read it. I hope there is a translation in English. It's hard to read it in its original form in Aramaic. I don't know that language. I think Aramaic is much harder to read than Arabic.
From what museum or library can we find the original ARAMAIC GOSPEL? Is there any original manuscript for it?
I am urging Jay Smith and his cohorts to produce that book as soon as possible so that Muslims and Christians alike will be enlightened. -05-11-23
However in the 1C Greek was more natural to use - an easy well developed lingua franca (none of the problems with a primitive script that the Quran had), the Old Testament had already been translated, many diaspora Jews spoke it, it was one of the 2 key languages of the Roman Empire, a main target audience in the "go out to all nations" directive of Jesus.

there's a problem with the mysterious letters hypothesis of lectionary referancing...
the Arabic keep the same numeral value that the hebrew are using...
Another view on the mysterious letters:
(1) If one goes by the Sanaa palimpsest example, the surahs were arbitrarily created out of long scrolls - by inserting a line on the 'original page' to end/start a surah.
It is quite fascinating how tame many critics become about Islam (Dawkins is a good example).

Muslims cry ' Allaho Akbar ' which means God is great. If that is true, then why do Muslims resort to threat and violence when they think Allah has been slighted? Shouldn't Allah send his own weapons to punish the culprits, if he is really powerful? That the Muslims claim one thing but practice another shows that their beliefs are false.
Paradise. -06-10-23

He should have elaborated on the following letters of Paul:

There is one gospel. The gospel is a message (good news), not a particular book. The Bible is not viewed by Christians the way the Quran is viewed by Muslims. The book derives from the church, not the church from the book.

So, you are belying your very own Bible. Which of the 4 gospels you considered to be just one? But that is also how Jay Smith sees it. You are right about the gospel being the good news. -05-21-23
