The 2020 Audi R8 is the mid-engined car to buy if you're over six feet tall; we can just start there. It's longer and taller than its Italian cousin, the Huracan, but shares the same fundamental archtecture, which means the same glorious 5.2L, 600-horsepower V10 engine. It's a combination of futuristic interfaces, superhero styling, and world-class performance that, against common conception, is fully practical as a normal car.

"you got a flat? Oh no! Bye"
Oh I got strong Top Gear memories right there. That hit me in the feels.
go watch the grand tour
wonderwall135 tgt is nothing like og top gear. It’s lost the charm that the old show had, mostly due to their grossly inflated budget that still can conjure up the vibe of Clarkson, Hammond and may on BBC
@@mitch8973 lol ok then
@@mitch8973 Go watch the second season. It's literally old school Top Gear quality.
Sorry to be so offtopic but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost the account password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
Leaving Jonny on the road reminds me of old top gear where they never help each other
It will be a sad day when they finally retire the naturally-aspirated R8.. I think it’ll go down in auto history as a true everyday supercar.
It already has 😎👍
911: am I joke?
Chrysty87 V10 na vs turbo 6....Not Even a comparison
@@NameSchema100 GT3 touring....some sort of a comparison
Austin well gt3 and gt3 rs yes, but a Standard carrera 3.0 t, or even a Turbo just dont get My blood flowing.....Even with the Turbo beeing a faster car than the r8 and Huracan there is something about NA Engines especially Herr in Europe where there are no big v8s, just 4 cylinders.
Matt knows how to use 3 inches
I think the R8 has always been one of the most if not the most underrated supercar
I love the R8, just because it's one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Not in a flashy way, not in a classical way, but just in a purely elegant, subtle way. I think it's gorgeous.
Long life NA V10!
That car, a setting sun on a spring evening, zero traffic and the right soundtrack at just the right level. Heaven!!!
bro the right soundtrack already playing

Poor Johnny, he was never seen again.
"Do it for Johnny!!!"
Some say he's still standing there on the side of the road to this very day.
Driving an R8 through Southern California is literally my biggest dream. Awesome review as always, Matt!
The rear wheel drive of this is going to be epic
always choose AWD on this car believe me.
It was called the Lamborghini Gallardo LP-550-2.
@@MelvinKhosa the r8 is a huracan not the gallardo*
@@Coward2006 no way, AWD compromises
@@dragospahontu trust me, don't go rwd on this car, it's the base model.
"Oh no you got a flat???? Okay... Bye!" God I love you Mat.
Johnny finally revealed the real speed! :)
Riiight
That v10 sounds glorious
Just took the 33 to Lockwood Valley drive last week. Epic canyon drive 👍. You got to watch for that dip in front of the campground.
That wail from the exhaust is pure bliss!!
Love that car. Like movie seats with driver and passenger so close. Need some separation.
The turn in on all R8s is amazing
Well after trying Keeps I can tell you that I'm still bald on top but my ball 'fro is so majestic, it's winning competitions.
So there's that......
@Whittle Moore so you didn't end up furry like the cats @ the end of the intromerccial?
Yeah well the claim says that it will help keep you from balding for longer. Not revive back your hair.
Cause baldness is genetic.
@Young Black Conservative No EVERYONE who experienced hair loss due to aging is the result of genetic factors.
First facelifted R8 still looks the best, I think.
I think the first gen looked the most impressive for its time, when the car first came out it was like holly crap that's awesome. From then on they have been less exciting.
@@jeffk464 I mean yeah, there's that too.
Also I don't know how clear I was, but for reference, by "first facelift" I mean the one that still looks mostly like the first gen, but they changed the side vents a little and went from the eyelash running lights to the solid strips running through the middle of them.
@@jeffk464
I disagree. To me, the 2017-2018 model R8 is better than the original in every way. Well, except that the manual transmission was gone. To me, it looked better. It sounded better. And it performed better. But hey, different strokes for different folks!
Makes sense to pick the car with the louder exhaust and less HP. It's easy enough to tune these and make the same power as the Hurcacan Evo or more.
You can't really tune a NA engine 😘
These two have great chemistry reviewing cars
Serious question:
Looking at those super thin profile tires, is it really truly comfortable for daily drive?
Matt is driving on SMOOTH mountain roads, how about ‘normal, imperfect’ roads?
911 is considered drivable daily, but I found it to be too harsh for normal roads.
Magna ride solves most of those issues that I had running low profile tires. That being said 30 sidewall still will suck if that's what you have to run. 35 and mag ride is the best from my experience
Buy a Cadillac if you want comfort 🤣
Interior is flawless but my heart still sits with the NSX.
Andrew is the only reason I read Jalopnik. Love him. The only Audi I like is the R8, such a machine
6:34 Man that sounds good.. Long live the NA V10
Damn right, WOW
Too bad the old gated stick is gone. The one complaint.
rexseven93 I think only like 5-10% of R8 models were stick shift... no one bought them
Love your guys channel
I love my R8 V10 Plus ❤❤❤
I like the new rear, the front has too many sharp lines, like a lambo.
Its would be epic if audi brought back the manual transmission, even more epic is they did 4.0T V8 & Manual transmission lol
Honestly,, R8, previous and new model, is a comfortable supercar
Excellent vid, as usual. Man, you got some Juice! I've never seen, scratch, heard of a committed baldy with a hair restoration endorsement. Quite obviously you don't use the product. That's the definition of bad-ass. Waiting for your tampon ad...
You are so enlightened.
Wow, you just guys just drove me into subbing! what a ride! stay Awesome boys!
Andrew + Johnny Boy + Matthew = New American Top Gear hosts
MAKE IT HAPPEN!!! and Andrew Collins looks like the lead singer of Foster the People (Mark Foster)
Crazy how Audi butchered the looks of the R8 since first gen. Original is beautiful in comparison
this.. first gen still looks way way better. And removing the sideblade.. it was so iconic! nonsense decision
@deadend oh woops I forgot to flash my supercar owner license to comment
@deadend i mean.. i actually benefit from it, first gen manual v8 here in europe are around 50k, i could afford that one day, ill surely cannot afford this ugly new one but i dont have to be sad about it ;)
Fake vents have ruined this one
@@ImLeuff
Actually, I think Audi improved upon the design of the car since the original. And I did like the design of the 1st gen R8. But my favorite is the 2016-2018 model. I don't think Audi butchered the car at all. But hey, different strokes for different folks!
I sat in one of these in my local Audi dealership when I was purchasing my A5. I'm 6'3, I simply did not fit in the R8. I was horrendous for me, my knees were above the steering wheel and my head was touching the roof
Nice to know. Dang, I'm 6'3" as well. I sat in a aventador once and it felt like I was sitting in a power wheels car. Everything was below me.
33 North out of Ojai is quite a driver's road. Not busy, usually just a few cars. Though, a massive fire above Ojai burned the beautiful Live Oak forrest. You have drive about 20 miles North to get clear of the.scorched earth.
OMG! Is that Jalponik guy doing Poochie from the Simpsons (Itchy and Scratchy) cosplay!!
Well I guess you talk me into it. If it's REALLY the best DD for 200k, I think I'm game. Brb, gotta stop by ATM there and we'll get this show on the road.
Lololol. Automotive press is brutal. That engine sounds wonderful and Audi has done well with keeping the R8 updated. The price point and exclusive tires really put that thing into another realm of ownership and use cases.
0:40 you can’t even read the text
The text could've used those extra 3 inches...
The Plus had 610 HP, why did the detune the Performance to 602?
Is there a solid argument to not just get the base model?
From alopecia to R8. Well, that escalated quickly. 🎅🏿
Performance comes from loud engines that burble on back pressure. Nigel Tufnl proved this.
Are you freaking serious? The 911 may be everywhere in LA, and what the original R8 isn’t? They’re both all of ever like the 458!!!
only problem with this video is that it stopped right before the road really gets good.
No offense, especially as a balding man, myself, but are you really the best spokesperson for a hairloss drug?
LOL, my dream duo is a 911 and an R8! What else would you need? My R is the perfect daily already;)
That headliner is better than anything I own....
This car is not suitable as a daily driver. It is also not comfortable either, I am not sure why people keep saying that it is. You can last maybe two hours in it at a time. After that you will have to get out and stretch. The seats are very uncomfortable, and don't allow you to recline much because of the limited room. There also is very little trunk space. These cars are 100% impractical. They are designed to allow you to flex, thats it. Its not even the fastest car either. My twin turbo M6 is much faster in almost every metric. Supercars are the best for flexing, thats it. Im being 100% honest with all of you. They are difficult to drive, lots of blind spots, uncomfortable, expensive to insure, and very inconvinient. But they are the most beautiful sports cars to look at. With that being said, the R8 is probably the most comfortable one, but that isn't saying much. Its never going to be as comfortable as a even a standard coupe or a regular sedan.
Bro! I'm digging the blue shades. Who are they made by?
Very spirited driving. Looked like you were going damn fast. Great vid.
I'm sorry but R8 has HUGE depreciation...it's not even funny. Stick with the Huracan and 911 dudes. Maybe buy a cheap used R8 as a fun car, but never new.
Unless you got that REAL money.
Thats also why its the last R8. Audi is killing it off, though it might come back later as a EV.
If I could afford an R8 stuff like depreciation really wouldn't bother me. I'd just go for what I wanted.
Sure, if you're Doug DeMuro and you're actively planning on selling the car within a year or something, but otherwise fuck it.
ah but potentially the last ever NA r8, might be a different story. It might depreciate at first but it will go up eventually. As long as you're in it for the long haul, you should be good
People buy whatever they want to buy... Almost nobody buys a car thinking about depreciation, especially in this category!
I love the Audi R8
R8 = Huracan for full size adults. it's quite shocking actually, Lambo dimensions are literally for 3/4 size humans, 6ft + need not apply.
"One Take Motorcycles" think of the empire ..... Make that cool dude with the sunnies and backwards hat do it.
Oh, I'd have some good advice for Jonny Lieberman! I'd tell him to shave off some of that beard and use the hair to patch the tire. 😆😂🤣
Aww, I want them to keep the V10, a bit less power to get better emissions, like 600ps (593hp), RWD so less drivetrain losses = more power to the wheels and better fuel economy/emissions.
Then you put an electric motor on the front wheels, like 100-150hp and batteries in the old driveshaft tunnel.
That would be literally the perfect supercar to me. Sure it will be a lot heavier, but I would be willing to sacrifice that if I get to keep that glorious noice.
Can you take for a ride the new 2020 dodge challenger srt hellcat redeye widebody and show us how it handles and if they did some improvement with the handling
ruclips.net/video/QCaxdKVUeTU/видео.html . not a redeye but close enough you get the idea
God damnit why'd you have to put those kittens there. Now I gotta buy some.
If i would need to choose between one of this and the original one I'll take the original one with V10 and gated shifter, also I think it looks far better. This one seems overdesigned
I love the new look
So...is this a better daily than a Turbo S? Seems like that debate could settle the best car money can buy.
They're both in the same ballpark. I have a lot of seat time in a '17 R8 and I'm not sure how anyone can complain about it from a comfort or daily drivability standpoint (frunk space being the one obvious exception). But it could just as well be an A4 while sitting in traffic and running errands.
Way to go Liebs
I like those kitchen units!
Guys can you please tell me what’s your take between R8 V10+ vs 570S I’m about to pull the trigger for my next car can u tell me your opinion thanks
You won't be disappointed with an R8. Looks nice, drives nice and turns heads like crazy!!!
huracan or this? in terms of turning?
Nice audi looks sick
Is this really Audi's last V10?? If so, will Lamborghini follow the same?
Okay so Matt needs to be on Motortrend with Johnny instead of Jethro. That would make for some amazing content
Good pick , i want one too i have a v10 s6 but i want a r8 bad.
it feels weird looking at a car interior with only 2 pedals
Dream car😍😍 I WILL have one someday
Does it have the factory engine light like all Audi and VW?
All the hair that company made you grow is in you arms and back?
No way Johnny was going 90. I think he meant Kph.
yeah there's no way he'd speed here in cali ;)
This or the first gen Audi R8 V10 with a manual transmission?
this is faster, the first gen is a manual and sooooo much better looking. 1st gen for me any day of the week. even the manual V8
First gen. Looks better, is more fun, and still quick.
Gen1 is old and crap by comparison.
no more exciting looking than a base 911

I guess I’m getting old cause Matt seems to be going way too fast for a public road.
Eh he's pretty smart and mature about it.
the tires are only $330 a pop btw
Jesus Matt you were fuckin MOBBING on that first flyby
He is WHIPPING.
For tall RICH people lol. Just a little correction to your title haha. Beautiful car
PERFECT!!
Any audi r8 is my dream car
This or the 911 turbo s?
RIP R8, you were fun.
Freakin Awesome!!!
Can’t wait for just the noise
Well, German individuals are taller than people from other regions around the world, so I would presume they would make cars for taller people as you mentioned in this video.
What’s up with the video between 1:28-1:31?.
What roads was the drive?
So for you personally. Which car would you choose. The new Porsche GT3 or the new R8?
R8 all day... Porsches are boring looking
Audi developed the v10. Its nit from Lamborghini, it was just first in a Lamborghini after Lamborghini belongs to VW in 2005 or so
Audi purchased Lamborghini in 1998.
How does Audi expect people to spend 215k for this when you can get a 2017 identically mechanical car with different bumpers for 140k
Dude you don't know what you're talking about!!!
Manny Land Can you please elaborate where I am wrong?
@@jgsanti918 you might be looking at a V10 not a V10 Plus... Options are always more expensive for example quilted leather and alcantara roof liner is a $5,000 option
Manny Land I have a 2017 R8 V10 Plus with every possible option, including quilted leather comfort seats, and alcantara headliner. My car is worth 140-150k and it is mechanically identical to the 2020 R8 V10 Performance that is *starting* north of $200k.
@@jgsanti918 did you buy it used?
I just wish it was more affordable...... especially if there was a 4.0 twin turbo V8 from the RS6/RS7 or 2.9L twin turbo V6 from the RS4/RS5 versions
“This Audi is a lamborshutthefuckup”
Passenger looked so scared at the start
Why are TheSmokingTire videos always more focused on Matt than the car? Just for once, less Matt, more car! We all know what Matt looks like.
