The first satellite navigation system was invented at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory, using the Doppler effect of Sputnik and other early satellites. The system evolved into Transit, used by the Navy to navigate and target nuclear missiles, later by commercial oil rigs and ships.
