I'll never, ever forget the super-shotgun near the revenants in map 6. When I was like 5 years old and watching my older brother play, this was the first time either of us had seen revenants, and after killing them he remarked "oh wow, so they drop super-shotguns!"
That entire cyberdemon misbehaving arc on Map 8 was literally the funniest thing ever. I loved how he accidentally became an actual threat, only to stumble into a teleporter, get stuck and unintentionally telefragged. Literally cinema lmao
He got so many of funny things. "I dont know if this map had a BFG" "The third line of tiles should've been grey not brown" Know all the textures, but not the weapons.
This one was much easier to watch. The further we get into the game, the less I remember exact details of the maps. Which also means that the maps are more impressive when they get details right. Kudos to the map makers.

The reason I put "this should be easy." is because I swore I remembered that line, but I'm known to mix similar things up, so it was probably either a different intermission screen or another wad altogether I was mixing my memories with. After checking the original I kept it in, because that's what the project is about, no?
@@decino I also found that this one was easiest to remember. I ended up adding the reference to remaining humans (that wasn't addressed until map 11), the weapon in hand (again that was map 11 I think) and the "this will be easy." The rest was almost exact.
There's something about Dead Simple that always seems to amaze me. I remember when my dad first played this game back in 1995-1996, he thought this was like a boss level. This level always scared me as a kid.
Level 10 map made me really curious about how BFG works... When I was a kid I used to think that killed everything on screen... But that was not the case always... So years later I replayed the level, thought about that again then decided to search about it here in RUclips then I found this Pumpkin guy who explained it really well... You may know him
I tried out that door at 6:07 in DosBox. Game froze for about 3 seconds, the other window said "Illegal read from 62c0000 to 62c03e7", then Doom started working fine again. For fun I did it multiple times.
Map 10: Meatball Madness gets bonus points for including the weird blue cube on the ceiling of the arachnotron room that opens up the chaingunners, not entirely sure the original had chaingunners or not but atleast it had enemies at all.
I've fallen asleep to your videos on multiple occasions now, your voice is relaxing and the commentary keeps my thoughts from drifting, and Doom makes for some good ambient noise I guess haha
@@decino actually it's only rare because we all know not to wake up the barons. If you do wake them up and run away, cybes is almost guaranteed to teleport.
I love how The Crusher was such a faithful recreation for the most part and then Tricks and Traps was one of the most wonderfully cursed things I've ever seen. I think it might also be because it's one of my favourite maps, but it was so distressing, like, physically uncomfortable to watch XD. Loving this project and playthrough, amazing stuff

Because Refueling Base started life as a Doom map from Tom Hall and was completed by Sandy Peterson for Doom II, it feels to me more like the original Doom than any other map in the WAD. And what's interesting is that that's true even in this cursed reproduction. I've often thought that Doom feels like Lego models built according to instructions, and Doom II feels like building your own models from whatever Lego you already have. The reproduction here really confirms that for me.
You know, I just remembered something about my memories of "The Pit." For some reason, I remember the Chaingunners coming first -- then, when you panic and run to the ledge to get some distance, you're met face-first with some shotgunners. You remembered the shotgunners first, and t he mapper here did them both at the same time!

I'm curious about the what "recreated from memory" means. Does each mapmaker play through the level and memorize it in the editor before starting, or are they going off whenever was the last time they played it years ago? The second option seems impossible.
Some do the second option. for instance, that was how map02 was made. You were allowed to look at the real map up to three times to look at specific rooms, but not everybody did that. I think its obvious which ones those were.
There are rules allowing you to peek a bit to refresh your memory, but it's the mapper's choice. I made two maps for the upcoming TNT The Way We Remember It project, and I did them with no peeking based entirely on what I could remember from 10+ years ago...the recognizable but less accurate maps tend to be more interesting in my opinion.

I don't know if someone already said it, but the midi in the crusher is most likely from the GBA version of DooM II (which is also the first version of doom 2 I played as a kid, a cracked version with the Supercard). My father taught me well about fps backinnadayz
So far it's been really good for something that is created from memory I'm really impressed that last level for example that couldn't have been easy to recreate of course there's the obvious bit's some areas being more narrow than the original and others being more open like I was able to spot a few bits but I have played doom 2 like a lot still do though I'm more into wads now but anyway it stays very faithful to the original which I'm assuming is the point. From this level this is where I'm really interested to see how true they keep it because my memory gets a bit foggy from this level onwards so looking forward to seeing the rest. I remember the XBOX LIVE release of Doom 2; there was an achievement _Man and a Half_ for killing a cyberdemon with the Fist; and Refueling Base was the best place to do it. Decino wondering about the BFG for the cyberdemon reminded me of my efforts getting that achievement back in the day.

And as you go through the maps they get more and more warped, E1M1 starts out mostly fine, but the further you go the weirder it gets

The quality control has really stepped up here. The Doom 1 version was so bad I honestly thought that it was a troll in places.
