These are my favorite kinds of characters. Theirs a Character that gives much needed levity to and otherwise grim world in a book series I love. It’s a character called Ciaphas Cain in a book franchise called Warhammer 40k. The short version is that Cain became the Commissar of an Artillery Unit for two important reasons. Being a Commissar is a cushy job because you get to tell others what to do and being in an Artillery Unit means you’re far away from the action (because he’s a huge coward) he’ll constantly do things out of selfishness to save his own skin and end up looking like a hero and everyone assumes he saved the day on purpose. He’s called the “Hero of the Imperium” despite being the biggest coward it’s ever seen and he has too keep the lie up because he could be killed for treason and cowardice if the lie reveals itself.
