  • I unstretch a large canvas 7x11 ft and go through the steps or removing the stretched canvas. I also talk about how to construct them and the wood I use to build them with. How to remove the staples and preserve the painting by rolling with the painting on the inside.

Guessing the correct term may be "unmounting" a canvas? Great video, thank-you

I like that term a lot more. Thanks.

This video was great! I have two large oils on canvas that I want to unstretch and roll up. I would like to ship them to my daughter for storage. The larger one is 70x73 and I cannot find a shipping tube long enough to accommodate it. Do you have a source for a shipping tube long enough? And what diameter tube do you think it should be to accommodate a painting of this size?

Thanks, I do not know of a place that makes a shipping tube that large, when I order rolled linen from Clausens it comes in a tube that is 82 in. long. Don't roll it too tight, I would keep the diameter at a minimum of 4 inches. The paint will crack even at 4 inches IMO.

Thank you. I am going to buy some PVC drain pipe to put the rolled canvas in. PVC pipe coms in 10 ft lengths.

does removing the painting off the stretcher make the paint crack or shrink? i am a poor artist so I have to reuse the same stretcher multiple times but im curious if the painting will be affected by "unstretching" it

Yes, the longer it is not stretched the more it will crack, the more change you store your painting on canvas in humid or temp changing environments also makes it crack.

can I just frame a painting on flat surface, , like you would a photo or a print after I take it off the frame? but leave the glass out?

Paintings should be framed without glass or a matt board. It protects the painting and if the painting is stretched it provides additional support to the stretcher bars. I am a little confused on your question with taking it off the frame..... you can use a print or photo frame for paintings, just take the glass and matt board out.

@@flack_studio so I did an oil painting on a stretched canvas. I feel like there is a couple inches at the bottom of just empty space and it not working. So I wanted once it’s dry to remove it from the wood frame, maybe cut off those bottom inches and then frame it flat with a traditional picture frame. Maybe use a spray adhesive to put it on a piece of cardboard or thin plywood. Does that make sense?
