This is a really good song with a great message. What’s sad to me is that it’s still so relevant almost four decades after it’s release. ✌🏻✨

My father, who was a very spiritual man & studied many different religions, once told me that the emotion of hate stems from fear. He said most people aren't even really self aware enough to realize what is the fear that is birthing the hate. I was a teen when this came out and bullied a lot. This song was very therapeutic for me. Great reaction to a great song. Thank you Harri.

Depeche Mode wrote two of the sexiest songs ever-- Behind the Wheel and The World in My Eyes.
Suffer Well is one that no one reacts to but it’s an EARGASM!!

"I think it's weakness. I think it's insecurity. I think it's jealousy." Nailed it, Harri. On the music front, the cold industrial rhythm has an odd warmth, and the Fairlight makes its appearance. Great, great song. Perhaps New Order "Bizarre Love Triangle" is a catchy follow-up?

That second verse is so powerful - "Now you're punching and you're kicking and you're shouting at me, I'm relying on your common decency. So far it hasn't surfaced but I'm sure it exists - it just takes a while to travel from your head to your fist." This is the cry of a jaded person who still, in some small way, wants to believe there's hope. Great stuff.

Depeche Mode, these dudes can be pretty dark. People would be on dance floor, not knowing what the message is being conveyed while shaking what their Mama's gave them...lol. "Personal Jesus" another powerful track. I don't think they're underrated, just misunderstood.

There is lots of symbolism and actual stories from life. And that's making Depeche Mode's songs even more powerful, timeless. People don't think much about the lyrics, but they are really, really strong and lots of times very dark. When I listen to the Songs of faith and devotion album, I am always reminded of my young self when I didn't understand English well, I enjoyed the album a lot from the music point of view. But then I understood the lyrics and it was really strange, especially when one of my favourite songs was In your room.

This song is so relevant today, even more so than when it was released. The U.S. is infected with hatred right now, much of which was promoted by our former president and amplified by a cable news propaganda machine. It’s very sad. Good choice Harri 🌺✌️

Yet here you are pushing that hate. You and those who hate the former president are so filled with hate and violence you actually elected a white supremacist who campaigned with George Wallace and Robert Byrd. Yet to people like you in your minds you were doing the right thing. You support a man whose whole political career spanning 50 years was focused on destroying the Black community. Yet you think you are the virtuous ones, all the while ignoring a violent terrorist group who spent 4 years from 2015 to 2020 destroying Black communities and murdering local black leaders.
Take some time and do some research and you will quickly realize you are the one who is supporting the division and hate. You are the one supporting racism and white supremacy. You will learn if you have the bravery to do so that everything you believed about "your side" is lies used to divide the nation and push a fascist racist agenda.
Know this I do not hate you, I hate those you support because I have spent my life being abused an discriminated against by them. I have watched in horror as so many good people fall to the lies of the racists and white supremacists who have spent the last 200 years believing they own us Blacks.

Depeche have a new song called “People Are Good,” which is the matured, resigned version of this that people ultimately are a disappointment. We want to hope that someday we’ll all just get along. But reality seems to be that we are only moving backward. Rather sad but true.

the sounds of depeche mode were experimental at that time there was no other that matched them, now any keyboard has similar sounds in preset or easy to record them and pass them to a sampler, that's why these days they don't appreciate the effort that Depeche Mode made at the beginning of his career, especially in young people of this millennium it is rare to see that they appreciate it

Martin L. Gore (Dm's 2nd Vocals) is country music fan, hence the soulfulness you're getting. DM always tries not to get into political issues but in 1984 it was the " COLD WAR" era, hence the song. You should check out their most recent song "Where's the revolution" it talks about what we are going through in these recent years. The first four songs of the album Spirit somewhat political. I suggest you hear the album. Martin L. Gore is DM's song writer since Vince Clark left after the first album.
Martin's style is great, he also writes through the eyes of David Gahan (DM Lead Vocals). People Are People is still relevant and it's unfortunate that it remains like this..

It's not thinking that makes a man hate another man. It's a bad narrative about "them" (Jews and Muslims, for example), it's the fear of being deprived of "pleasant normality" (which the other side calls "privilege" and sometimes "decadence"), it's the fear of being exposed to "promising competition" when you can't find yourself being as "promising" as "them". What can we do about this? My suggestion: Make honest plans about a better world to live in together and build it. Together.

This song, especially the lyrics, made me love Depeche Mode back in 1984. And I still love their music and lyrics. And I played this song loudly with open windows when are far right demonstration walked down our street. I hope one day this won't be necessary anymore.

Brilliant, love this as it's so true in so many areas of society across the world. Agree with your analogy, to me there are good and bad people across the spectrum of the human race. I simply look for the good in people regardless of colour, race, sexuality and religion, as a result I have a beautiful array of friends from many diverse areas in society here in the UK. Perhaps I have been blessed. Thank you Harri

Great reaction and insights, Harri. You were spot-on! The message may be even more relevant today. "People Are People" was Depeche Mode's first hit in the U.S. in 1985 when I was a teen. It was so unique and cool-sounding to me and is still my favorite DM song. "Strangelove" is my second fave by them, although the lyrics are kinda twisted. :-)

The song was never as popular as it should have been due to Depeche Mode being labeled a queer band along the likes of Erasure and Pet Shop Boys. All of those had radio hits (MTV did not play their videos often) and they mightve been forgotten had they all not managed to thrive into the 90s in gay clubs.
