How To Build Speed And Accuracy On Linear Drum Fills - RLK and KRL
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 фев 2025
- Two absolute linear classics - RLK and KRL, to demonstrate the 2 practice methods that facilitate us building speed and accuracy with this type of fill.
1. SLOW AND STEADY - so important to let our nervous system “see” the movement involved and for myelination ( • Myelination: How and W... ) to occur.
2. SLOW-FAST-SLOW - where “fast” is our current improvement zone - the tempo at which we can still just about play it accurately but we’re feeling challenged, and our tension level has gone up a little.
I’m playing the fills as sextuplets here - six hits per beat, so “RLKRLK” or “KRLKRL” on each beat.
Have fun and please let me know if any questions,
Mike

hi was wondering if that can be classed as a tripplet aswell
@@paitonmckay8843 These patterns are three notes long, so could absolutely be played as triplets - but also could be used in any other note value too. The length of the sticking phrase does not have to be the same length as the rhythm phrase/note value. Cheers!
Massive respect for your ability as both a drummer and a teacher. Hope you have a great Christmas!
Thank you Lawrence!
Fantastic lesson. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
Mike is so refreshing and friendly. There is no way around it, he makes you more confident with every of his videos.
You're an amazing drummer and I appreciate this video. I practice this every day for 30 minutes than I stop..cause everything over 30 minutes I start messing it up.
Thank you very much 🥁👍
Such a helpful and supportive video for us total beginners feeling awkward they can’t maintain a fast beat. This simple technique makes sense!
That’s a great lesson and a very good teaching technique, Mike. That whole bit about getting into the tension zone is exactly right. It is precisely this for everything in drumming, or any musical instrument. I remember many years ago struggling with my triplets before I knew about the tension zone. It was when I started using a metronome with this exercise as a metric that I yielded monumental instantaneous results within just days! It’s great that you so strongly stressed the tension zone. Your students would be well advised to heed this advice, and they will yield immediate success and quickly be able to get up to the speed you were playing at 6:45 in this video, which looked like about 210 bpm.👍
Thank you so much, i have picked drums back up from a couple of years in wich i haven't played, and I was really struggling with these patterns, this is the only simple and effective solution i've found so far.
Again, thank you so much
The info in this video is pure gold.
Quicker the practice, slower the progress! Slower the practice, quicker the progress! Great video again Mike. ;-)
Amen! Thanks for watching 🙏🏻👊🏻

Brilliant! 🥁👌
This video is priceless, just what I’ve been searching for. Thanks Mike
Cool Martin, glad you dig man 🙏🏻👊🏻
@@MikeBarnesDrums Are you able to do a short video on RLKK 16th note fills please? Grohl used them on This Is A Call. 🙏🏼
@@MikeBarnesDrums ......I’m guessing kick drum doubles are key to this 😫
Sure re RLKK, although conceptually or in terms of how I practice it, I’d say nothing different from what I say in this vid :) Start slow, build gradually, improvement zone is everything IMO👊🏻
Technique vid for bass drum doubles here: ruclips.net/video/rSSMIBfdPWU/видео.html
Another good one, happy Christmas Mike 🎄 😀
You too Geoff!
I love this linear fill, you make it look so easy, I've been learning for 2 years and I am still working on my speed technique. I have just passed my debut rsl with a distinction and I have been watching all of your trinity grade 1 videos and they are great to follow when I'm struggling reading the notes, you make it so entertaining and fun to learn and it also keeps me captivated as there are some boring videos on youtube. 👍
Nice one, cheers Molly - thanks for watching and glad you’ve found the vids useful :)
I’m gunna try this in the morning hopefully it works u are a very good teacher
Cool, cheers man!
@@MikeBarnesDrums ur welcome
Very helpful ... thank you Mike !
Cheers Marc!
Nice...
Thanks for watching, glad you dig.
Hi Mike, it´s brilliant as most of your presantations. Thanks for them all. But, but, but are’nt the two? Methods RLK and KRL not just one? at least. If I go right left kick faster and change into kick right left don‘t I get a sequence of RLKRL so that a fast move of RLK is nothing else but the same, a kind of circle?
Thanks for watching! I mean, I suppose so - in the same way that RLRL and LRLR are the same thing, just starting in a different place! Cheers. More linear phrases for you here: ruclips.net/video/a6sFEruLOKE/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Is Ringo Starr a good drummer to look up to?
Absolutely 👍
Yeah!
And I'll add that visualisation is not wasted time either. Imagining the action is also brain training.
Can I I ask how that small Roland wedge sounds? I find I can’t even get close to a pleasing sound from a small wedge.
Hi, yes it sounds good. Tbh though I always way prefer monitoring e-drums through in-ears where possible. But use this for Zoom lessons etc and it works great. Cheers!
Hello Michael - why does your kit face the wall?
So you can see clearly what I'm playing.
@@MikeBarnesDrums Cool. Love your vids
Great video thanks! Mike do you recommend doing this with a metronome and gradually increasing it? I found this worked for me on other patterns, but have never tried with fills, fills are my weakest point in plying drums for sure
Hi man, thanks for watching. Yes - alongside the two methods demonstrated here! Cheers 👊🏻
How would count that?
Depends on context! ie the note value you're aiming to play it at. Could be "1-trip-let, 2-trip-let, 3-trip-let, 4-trip-let" if phrasing is eighth note triplets (probably a good place to start!). Cheers
@@MikeBarnesDrums thank you
Could you put the translation into italian?
