B52's are just such a great band. They managed to bring a funny touch in the whole underground/alternative genre that sometimes takes itself a little to serious, without being cheep or cheesy. Instead, they are very original and creative with their songwriting.

they loved the cheese to the point of kitsch, which since i believe all three male og members are gay, at least ricky wilson and fred, was like this fun new avenue in the southern US new wave punk aesthetic
rip ricky wilson who died of aids early, his 4 string guitar changed how many look at the instrument, it can be a baritone and high notes at the same time

It is "so silly." But I remember hearing it for the first time, when at a club back then, when it came to the part where everyone got down on the floor...I found myself doing the same. It's truly just a fun and silly song. When at a party, and everyone is too stiff, put this on and turn it up. Then watch and see if they unwind themselves.

You mention Ricky Wilson as the bass guitarist, but he was actually both bass and lead guitar--on the same guitar. He would string his guitar with regular strings up top and bass strings at the bottom so he could pluck both simultaneously. At 5:58 you can see this clearly--two strings on top, two on bottom, with a gap between them.

  • @silverlobo2135

    Hello Beth
While on the surface (pun intended) it is "so silly and fun". it has musical depth (pun intended again). As you described the various vocal requirements and the intrinsic 'catchiness' (pun again) of the riff, drums, and instrumentals gives the song its lasting value.
Unless I have been mistaking the lyrics for years, "Rock Lobster" is basically about a group of people at a beach party (as most people in the 50's and 60's did). Someone run into a 'rock' that turns out to be a lobster, both in the water and under the dock. The third verse is either someone in scuba gear or the lobster itself.4th and 5th verse are a depiction of the underwater world. Verse 6th (longest verse) is about back on land, the young adults are having a cookout and party on the beach, considering what the other 'under the sea creatures' that people might see there and the 'noises' they might make there.
"Rock Lobster" is a fun summer beach fun song. Song with a "catchy" beat / riff to keep the party fun and interesting. Most people just like to eat, the good beat to listen, and dance to it. They don't really care about the lyrics. The majority, after many years of listening to it, probably could tell you fully what it is about.))

So glad you see it for what it is a funny silly song that make you laugh. A few years back I was watching a local metal band and in between songs the guitarist
Stated playing that riff and the crowd went nuts . The singer had to announce they did not know the song and the guitarist played it just to fill in between songs.
The boos that followed and the look the singer gave the guitarist said it all LOL

Singing wise I would say Give Me Back My Man is the most interesting. Cindy is incredible on it.

It was late in my college years when the B-52s hit the national scene. We had really serious punk and punk-like and new wave bands like Elvis Costello and the Sex Pistols. We were starting to see the end of the tunnel of disco. Metal bands with big hair were hitting it big and people took them very seriously.
And then the B-52s jumped in amidst all of this and made going to hear music and dancing SO FUN. We danced in apartments and dormitories and bars with huge smiles on our faces until we were exhausted. And then we danced some more and then we went home and fell asleep.
    So deliciously fun.

BTW, when they get to the "Down, down, down" part, everyone on the dance floor had to sink until they were lying on the floor and then get back up when the music restarted, sort of like with "Time Warp" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". A few facts about the B-52s. Most of them were students at the University of Georgia in Athens. They were part of the alternative & gay scene at the time, and they formed a band with little musical background. They wrote five songs for their first show, at a birthday party on Milledge Avenue in Athens, and played those five songs over and over. Rock Lobster was one of them. At one point, they moved to NYC, but they kept homes in Georgia, and some now live in GA again. They pretty much lit the fuse on the Athens music scene becoming nationally known, and it became what the New York Times called the birthplace of indie music.

I was only 8 when i first heard this song...I LOVE listening to this band ever...now I am 55 years old. I still and will always love this band. It is very sad to share that the already had there farewell tour three years ago, or more. i love this unique band. They were far advanced for their time in the 70's

It's crazy, but they were so fun. Saw them many times - a 52's follower. That was the crazy times of another age. You can't kill the lobster lol. Thanks for the giggles.

I had a acquaintance years ago and we were driving back home from out of town and the B-52's came on, I asked him what it was and he said he didn't know it was just with a bunch of tapes he bought (yes cassette tapes when cars had a tape deck), he said it was just noise and better than just listening to the engine.

Rock Lobster is a type of real lobster. Jasus edwardsii, a species of spiny lobsters. I think the band was trying to make a joke of rock music as they were considered "new wave". If there can be a Rockin' Robin, there can be a Rock Lobster.

This, and Planet Claire, are my favorite B-52's tunes. They certainly were unique.

This wasn't mainstream music - you'd only hear it on college radio. It was also a big relief for guys because they could dance to it, unlike the disco and symphony influenced rock music of the early to mid 1970's. Girls loved disco but only John Travolta could dance to it.

I remember when this was released. It was one of the most played songs in the jukebox at the campground recreation hall that summer. Ah, memories of "Rock Lobster!!" while playing pinball. Good times!

Thank you for this! I was part of a Halloween band with my friends and this was always the song to really get the party going. Awesome memories!
Sorry if this is not the place but I would love to hear your thoughts on the Japanese singer Ado. Supposedly she's self trained and no one has seen her face. Thanks again!

if the sight of you so casually breaking out a sock puppet and dancing with it, doesnt make every human heart fall in love with you, then the escalation to practicing the noises? Well, thats just a criminal waste on those who cant go where you were this day!

You should remember that when the Bs formed in Athens, Ga (UGA students), the music out at the time was bands like Super Tramp, the Steve Miller Band, and AC/DC. You couldn’t dance at all to those. (Other Athens bands include REM, Widespread Panic, of Montreal, Drive-by Truckers, Azure Ray, Neutral Milk Hotel, Gresham Disco, Pylon, the Glands, Love Tractor, Reptar, Elf Power, … and so many others!). They were not named after the bomber - it was after the hairstyle of the girls.

The B-52s opened for DEVO when I saw them in Seattle back in 1982. That was my very first concert ever and i eventually married the girl I went with!

I still have my 45 of this song. I think Nigel at Parrot records in Colchester played this to me a day or two before the great John Peel did on the radio.

I don't know if you have hear anything from the thrash metal band "Slayer", they have a song called "Raining blood". Somebody made a mash up of this song and "Rock lobster", it's titled "Raining lobsters", it's pure genius 😂 Great video, I had a great time (and love your lobster sobg❤)
