After dozens of requests I'm putting two of the most popular boot companies on trial to see who makes the better cap toe boot: Red Wing's Iron Ranger or Thursday's Captain Boot.
Who comes out on top: time-tested traditionalist or industry-disrupting new guy? I’ve worn the hell out of both of these boots, and it’s a tough call. Let’s take a look.
    OVERVIEW
    Red Wing
The Iron Ranger is a timeless workboot that’s barely changed in decades. It’s firmly casual, with a chunky silhouette. The toecap is a true toecap, made from two layers of leather. Other features include thick, full grain, oil tanned leather; shiny nickel eyelets; and a Vibram mini lug sole. (Mine are nitrile cork; Red Wing changed the soles from cork to Vibram in 2018.)
    Thursday Boot Company
The Captain boot is intended to be a hybrid work and dress boot, and it’s much lighter and sleeker than the Iron Rangers. The inner is fully lined, and the upper is a combination tanned leather. The sole is studded rubber and has a nice grip.
Overall, these are two completely different aesthetics: the Iron Ranger is a beefy workboot and the Captain is more versatile. But is the quality comparable? Let’s take a closer look.
SEE MY THURSDAY CAPTAIN BOOT REVIEW: • Thursday Captain Boot ...
    LEATHER
    Red Wing
Red Wing tans all their own leather at their tannery, SB Foot Tanning Co, including the amber harness leather on these Iron Rangers. This leather has a nice, rugged, outdoorsy feel and can go a long time without treatment. (I made the mistake of conditioning them with Obenaufs which darkened the color - see my video on conditioning Red Wings to avoid repeating this mistake: • Boot Oil vs Mink Oil -... ).
    Thursday Boot Company
The Captain is available in a variety of leathers, but these are made with Thursday’s Chrome - a combination tanned leather out of the LeFarc tannery. It’s really lustrous, and easy to dress up.
    SOLE
    Red Wing
The outsole is a flexible, rubber Vibram mini lug (unless you have an old pair, like mine, which are nitrile cork) and there’s a cork midsole, steel shank, and leather insole. The stitching is a 270-degree Goodyear welt - slightly less waterproof than the full 360, but still easy to resole.
SEE MY REVIEW OF THE RED WING IRON RANGER: • Red Wing Iron Rangers ...
    Thursday Boot Company
There’s a recessed lug rubber outsole, cork midsole, steel shank, and Dura EVA comfort strip, which you usually find in athletic sneakers. All of it is held together is a subtle 360-degree Goodyear welt.
The soles of these boots feel very different - and the lack of shock absorption on the Iron Ranger is my least favorite part. The EVA strip in the Captains is really nice, and between that and the (slightly more waterproof) 360-degree welt, I’d give the Captains an edge on soles.
    FIT & SIZING
Both boots run a half size large - I’m an 11.5 and I ordered an 11, which fit. Thursday’s come in sizes 6 to 15, while Red Wing offers 7 to 14.
Comfort-wise, I prefer the shock absorption on the Captains to the Iron Rangers. They’re a bit sleeker too, and cradle the foot better. The one downside is that because they’re direct-to-consumer online, you can’t try the Captains on before you buy them.
    PRICE
    Red Wing
Typically $300-$320, though you can sometimes find them on sale for less.
    Thursday Boot Company
    $199 from Thursday’s website.
    Pros/Cons
While I love the Iron Ranger, and I understand its popularity, I think you can’t beat the Captain boot for price and versatility. If you’re just getting one boot, I think you’ll get the most wear out of the Captains.
    Red Wing Iron Ranger
    PROS
    True, tough workboot
    Rugged, outdoorsy vibe
    Minimal leather care
    Grippy Vibram sole
    CONS
    $100+ more
    Lousy shock absorption
    270-degree welt
    Informal, workboot aesthetic
    Thursday Captain
    PROS
    Really affordable
    Versatile work/dress hybrid
    Lightweight
    Fully lined
Comfortable EVA strip - good shock absorption
    360-degree Goodyear Welt
    CONS
    Direct-to-consumer, can’t try on
    Less outdoorsy
    Leather shows scratches more easily

I own a pair of the Thursday Captains and really like them. However they really dent and scratch easily. This is probably because of the type of leather and that’s fine for office work and day to day life. The old well worn boot aesthetic is nice anyway. However the Red Wings are built to take punishment, not trips back and forth in the office. Using the Red Wings on casual Friday is like the guy that uses his lifted apocalypse Jeep just for grocery getting.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  5 лет назад +25

Yeah for sure. I'm surprised how easily the scratches go away with a bit of shoe cream though, so it's not a massive deal to me. But like I say in the video, oil tanned leather is real tough and doesn't need much care.

Having owned both as well, I think where Red Wing stands out in general is quality and durability. The Thursdays I own just didn’t hold up as well, and I’ve only had them a year. My Red Wings are 4+ years old with a lot more miles and are in better condition.
I think comparing Thursday to something like the Higgins Mill would probably be a more practical comparison anyway, because you’re correct in that Red Wings are much more work boot oriented.
If I could only have one pair of do-it-all boots? I think no question that would have to be my Alden Indies.

Great video! When I was looking for my first pair of boots, two of the top suggestions were iron rangers and Thursday captains so this would have been helpful then so I appreciate you making the video. I have always found your videos to be helpful and informative.
That being said, I now own both and although the Thursday’s check all the boxes, the quality is not quite as nice as my iron rangers. I also find myself enjoying the iron rangers more now that they are broken in. Also, not that it matters much, but I have definitely gotten more compliments on them over the Thursdays.
I completely agree that the Thursdays are more versatile though, I can dress them up easily whereas the iron rangers definitely can’t.

The Iron Rangers look great but kill my feet. Work boots that people really work in, which Red Wing also makes, have modern technology that makes them comfortable to wear.

I own 2 pairs of thursday boots, and honestly learning more about red wings, i'm definitely happier with my choice. The main reason I went with thursdays is not the price(which itself is already a BIG bonus) but the fact that as you mentioned, they look much sexier and are much more versatile. The iron ranger for me looks too much like a work boot(probably because that's exactly what it is), but I'm mostly looking for boots for casual wear in day to day life.
The boots I wear for my job are 5.11s I bought for $100 and I honestly don't care how they look. I don't go to work to try to look good. But thursdays allow me to look good outside of work.

And it was just in the right spot to tear my feet to shreds within 5 minutes. After I tore that out though, the boots were absolutely comfortable. The captains do wear easily, I have glued the toe of the sole back on with super glue. But, I still love them.

I have owned well over ten pairs ,but my Iron rangers had staples pop through the insole. I will tell you staples in the bottom of the feet is no fun. Joe Boyd i suppose it is rare. I was literally told to hammer the staples down. I’m blue collar so I know mistakes happen, it is how you respond to them. I didn’t want a free pair or the employee fired just wanted quick response. It took corporate customer service a week. Luckily the store refunded my money after attempting to hammer the staples down.

They lasted me about 4-6 months of wear. I have had them for 2 years but I have definitely not worn them for anywhere near even a year, and it's pushing it to say I've worn them for even half a year.
Honestly, just save your money and buy Red Wing Iron Rangers and honestly if you can spare it just buy some Nicks or something. I have a pair of Nicks and just bought a pair of Iron Rangers and I will never buy another pair of Thursdays for myself ever again.

This seems like kind of an odd comparison to me - I own Captains and love them, but I was looking at Iron Rangers specifically because I wanted something I could stomp around outside in and not worry about messing them up. These two boots just don't seem that similar at all, so doing a head-to-head is a bit confusing. The Thursday Chromes are super-easy to scuff up, which to me limits them to wear where I care about the appearance. Iron Rangers are built for punishment, and honestly, look pretty ridiculous for appearance.
It's hard to imagine situations where I'd be torn between wearing one of these two "Going to the club - hmmmm should I wear the Iron Rangers??" or "Gotta unload the tools from the pickup, lemme get on my nice shiny Thursdays"
A lot of other comparisons would make much better sense (for example, your 1000 Mile/Iron Ranger video), or comparing the Thursdays to Parkhurst Delawares or AE's Higgins Mill. If you wanted to compare a Thursday boot to the Iron Ranger, the Vanguard seems like a more appropriate pick, since they have the thicker leather and some varieties aim to be more rugged.

Not quite, he talked about the construction, feel and price of the Thursday’s, and you can get them in one of their more rugged leathers if you so choose to. That would only affect the “dressier” part of the final review, but everything else would hold true. Vanguards are pretty much the same as Captains, just different leathers, different lasts and no EVA strip, but on foot they feel fairly similar.
I think the video is spot on, and there are specific audiences for both types of boots 🤷🏻‍♂️

A fair comment, I'd say my viewership is mostly young urban dudes who wear boots casually, so I think the versatility and value and comfort comes more into play, which is why I emphasized all that in my video.

@@Stridewise That definitely makes sense - when I tried Iron Rangers on at the store your analogy of them being made of wood felt *very* fitting - they were ungodly uncomfortable. A big reason I like the Captains is that I can teach a two-hour class on my feet and they still feel great. I actually ended up ordering a pair of Tricker's Stow boots with a Commando sole, partially based on your review of them - they sound well-suited to Indiana outdoors, and you commented that they had good shock absorption and comfort. I did go for a less... *bold* color, though ;) Still waiting for them to arrive, but I'm really excited.

Thursday boots offers a good boot for a good price, and their look is very well designed for a boot like that. Many boots have every line designed entirely around comfort and durability (thats why the design of the Iron Ranger looks so awkward).
That being said, the taller Thursdays definitely look better IMO.

I’ve seen a couple reviews from cobblers who are re-soleing Thursday Boots. So far, each review has been very critical of the materials, especially the welt. It will be interesting to see over time if the cost per wear ales thema good value over the long term.

I own a good ten pair of heritage high end boots....Red Wing, Adlen, Allen Edmond, Thursday, Florsheim, Wolverine..... I fought it for many years but Thursday is the best boot. Money aside. Overall, if you're going to own one pair, the Captain is the best bet. Comfortable, versatile, durable, easy to get into and out of, stylish, affordable. I hate to say it as it is such a new and trendy company, but the product speaks for itself. I may love more things about other specific boots, but overall, the Captain is the best!

If you are looking for more of a stylish/dressy boot that is good for just regular use walking around in town, then the Captains would be a good choice. And I do trust my Captains with rough environments. I had to muck through muddy fields at an Oktoberfest where the Captains kept my feet dry and cleaned up decently afterwards.

I've worn a pair of Thursday boots almost every day for about 1.5 years and they are holding up great. The only other boot I have to compare it to are Die Hards and they fell apart after 8 months of work. Thursday leather does show lots of character with scratches and scuffs but it doesn't affect the durability, just makes them look better in my opinion. Worn in boots make you look like a man, if you're trying to keep them pristine and walk around sippin' coffee then you might want to rethink about what footwear to go with.

As someone who works for Red Wing, some thoughts to add for potential buyers. The eyelets can be changed out for another metal, doesn't have to be nickle. You can have that done at almost any Red Wing Store for free, as well as oiling and cleaning. We also do free repairs depending on the condition of the boot, as well as resoling which does cost a bit of bit of money.
Like he mentioned the Heritage isn't a forgiving boot until broken in, but we do sell leather foot-beds to help add a bit more cushion as well.
He makes some very good points, but I don't think I've ever heard the term 'clown shoes' when it comes to our Iron Ranger's. But I can see why some would think of it, that way. ^^
This video has a lot of insight and information, so definitely watch. ^_^
      Have a great day everyone~!

I own both boots. Thursday is more comfortable to wear, because their leather is softer. The sole is easy to get damaged.
The sole may be too thick, so it is hard to feel or control your foot, when you change gears on motorcycle or pressing sustain pedal of piano lol.
Red Wing is tougher and more durable. They have official repair shops, so you can keep fixing and wearing for a long time with trusted support.
If I have an opportunity to buy another a pair of boots, I would definitely choose Red Wing.

There are reasons the RedWings are so popular, Their QUALITY! The " Copy Cars", like "Thursday" and "White" attempt to copy The RedWing Heratage Iron Ranger but fail to achieve quality parity. White Boot Co produces a low quality copy for $530, 1/3 MORE than the Iron Ranger!!!
I have worn RedWing "Chuka" shos since 1967. Wore the 1st pr until they literally fell apart. Then I made a knife sheath out of them, which I still have!
Pairs #2, #3 and #4 are still wearable, but my feet have lengthend to the point that they are too short now, but still in good shape. The last pair of RW , ( Thr "Postman", (sz12), I still wear! I love the Oil Tanned leather eventuall morphs from hard and stiff to soft, moccasin or even glove leather.
But my Wesco 12" logger style boots were carefully custom, hand crafted FOR EACH FOOT in 1974! I STILL WEAR THEM TODAY! They cost $125 in 1974. The same Wesco boot today costs $700 or more.

Wear thicker socks to prevent blisters.

As a hiker, I always wear sock liners. Even an inexpensive nylon men's dress sock can fill the role. Then a thicker wool sock over that. I got that bit of advice as a Boy Scout and it works well for me.

I wonder whether the 0.2mm difference in the leather thickness makes them a less good boot to use as a motorcyclist

Great review! when I bought my IR boots, it was not because I wanted a boot I could dress up. I wanted a casual every day boot that could take a beating. I don't use boots when I dress up, I have a pair of Saint Laurent lacquer shoes I use for those occasions. My RW IR are very comfy though, and the lack of shock absorption, have never been a problem to me what so ever. And yes you really fucked your IR's up, with to much conditioner, they look like charcoal.. Almost a crime lol

Nice one on the Saint Laurents, Stefan! Live and learn with my iron rangers, at least they're super waterproof lol

The main criteria for many many people out there is the long term durability and stability of the boot which basically hasn´t been talked about in this video. A real comparison between two boots must in my opinion, include this aspect. And in this criteria i would guess (i could be completely wrong though) Red Wing wins by a mile.

Hm, I thought I spent a decent chunk of time saying the Iron Rangers have thicker and tougher leather, but maybe I should have emphasized that a bit more. I'm coming at this as a guy in New York who likes to dress well and likes good value - also something I should have emphasized more!

The Iron Ranger is more expensive because it is much, much tougher, and made in the States; the Captain will fall apart much sooner than the IR. And the IR become more comfortable over time, although I know what you are saying. And yes, they are chunky and not really appropriate for the office, right. But the Captain is not a work or motorcycle boot at all. It just looks kind of like that. So it isn't actually any more versatile than the IR. It is an office boot that pretends to be otherwise. No thanks, for me. I'd rather just get a true dress boot for the office, and keep my IR for tough jobs and motorcycling. This is what I've done, actually. I haven't found any boot that can do both properly.
