I don't offer raw footage, but rather a documentary edit. It's basically the FOMO edit, but they're getting all the main sections as multicam edits if we shot with multiple cams. When I edit the feature film, I've already mostly done this anyway, so I just finish it up and throw everything in order with chapters.
Great advice - there was a 'famous' case in the UK where the videographer sold footage with him swearing in it. The story made it in to the papers, especially because he handled in badly
So basically a FOMO edit is just how we still mostly roll in Easter Europe. Parents, grandparents want a full 3-4 hour video of their kids weddings most of the time (2-3 VHS length in their time). To make it all proper look good, cut from multiple angles is a real and lengthy job. Also goog luck asking some thousands of euros for it. Wish people here were crazy enough to spend that much money on wedding photo/video services as couples do in the US.
I had negative moment happen to me with the photographer said go and I wasn't ready setting up and the clip came out blurry and dark because I wasn't exposed and focused. The only raw footage I sell is a static camera of the full ceremony. The fomo edit sounds like way more work. Also really, don't shoot more than you think you'll need. That just makes editing harder. I go into 90% of weddings with a mental checklist of every shot I need to get. Then everything is easier at the end.
We started offering something like this, but with a couple of refinements. First, we don’t offer it as an option when the couple book. Partly because we were wary of unedited raw but also because doing so can divert their budget from booking something else from our menu, or can stop them booking altogether if they decide the total they’ve now decided they need is all costing too much. Second, as part of our normal editing process we lay out all of the footage, maybe 8 hours or so, on an organised timeline sequenced by subject/time, and do a preliminary cull that gets the footage down to 2/3 hours. We make a copy of that first cull (this will form the basis of the ‘raw footage’ offering), and then cull it further down to an hour or so which is the cull we use for the highlights edit. We deliver the highlights edit (usually about 8 minutes). Around 18 months later we need to clear hard drives from the year-before-last’s raw wedding footage. Before we do so, we send an email to all the couples from the year-before-last telling them the truth ie. that we need to save disc space but before we do so they have the opportunity to buy the approx 2-3 hours of culled footage. If they accept, it’s ready-culled and we more or less just drop a conversion layer and LUT and export. We did this for the first time last winter, because we genuinely needed to free disc space, and over half the couples bought the footage. It was a nice bit of extra winter income. Because 18 months have passed since the wedding most couples have got over the wedding expenses and have budget to spend a bit more. We think of the up-sell as being a bit like selling a wedding album.
I sell the FOMO edit type thing although I do spend a little bit more time on it: I include the Multicam edit of the ceremony and speeches within it, and the rest of the footage is just a string out with some light background music (not cut to the music, but just to make it less awkward and not hear me breathing in the camera lol) With that said, when people want raw footage here's what I suggest: - Put all the raw footage on a davinci resolve timeline (not premiere) - Apply a Log to Rec709 lut to all clips - quickly skim through to any parts where you might've said something bad, delete the audio from that clip. - in delivoery page, select exporting individual files with LUT. This will export all the raw clips but with some sanitization and basic color, and it'll still be each individual clip in its entirety.
in my package it's called Traditional /documentary style edit and its more for the fear of them coming back to me asking for stuff i didn't include in the highlights lol
The fomo edit. It's funny I've been doing this since I started in the wedding business 6 years ago. I have been very successful with it. I highly recommend doing it however I do sync up the audio files for like speeches and also I do a separate video for just The ceremony where I have multiple cameras up and I make a ceremony film. and I charge more for just the ceremony film. So with me they will get three films if they get my highest package they will get a wedding film, ceremony film, and a behind the scenes video. it's been very successful for me for the last 6 years most of my customers get the best package.
wow, FOMO is such a good idea! I used to shoot without picture profile and I don't mind just sending all the raw footage to the clients (for free). Now I learned to use slog3 and edit from you and love it, and I was struggle if I should add lut to every raw footage one by one and that's a nightmare (because I put it on my package contract "all the raw footage"), in the future I will considering switch to FOMO, but yes that will be a lot of work explaining to the clients.
I offer it too! And I only offer what you described at the end. I'd never just give them totally unedited uncolored un-trimmed footage haha that would be weird IMO. Probably 1 out of 8 of my couples add it on in advance which is helpful because I film a little bit differently during the day, I get way more BTS type footage that I wouldnt typically use in their main highlight film. And then I follow up with couples at like 6-12 months if they would like it as I do not keep the raw footage forever. Probably 1 out of 8 add it on when I do that check in. It's so easy work for me and a nice little bonus
Such good points! One of the biggest issues I've found with giving raw footage is they then struggle to even view it..ask why their computer cant read it etc lol on top of log footage or extremely long video files that really were not useful at all. I think its an all around mess to offer it and time consuming there after to deliver it. Unless you tack it on in a package like you stated
Thanks! Was a tough titling decision for this video, because I agree with you that raw can be used to describe sensor data, not as many videographers use the term “rushes” in my experience and it definitely isn’t as searched on RUclips. :)
@@whoismatt”Dailies” is another equivalent term? Also unprocessed clips? 😊 Thanks for responding! Learning so much from you! I like also that you don’t stop your learning and you seek out different ways to do things like your collaborations with Justin Porter!
FOMO EDIT. In TV jargon it's what we call "compactado" here in Spain. I don't know the tv English word. I've been offering this extra product for some weddings.
I did two weddings for my cousins back in the 1984-5. They recieved the VHS tapes as my gift for them. Completely unedited. Why? Because editing back then would require two machines and any edits ie copying etc would reduce quality.
Yes. Just like photographers should give their clients the raw photos, edits (psd), etc. Videographers should give the raw footage. It's their property, it would not exist if they didn't pay to have you make it. Give it to them.
We've delivered multiple FOMO edits at this point and it has been a success. Best of both worlds really.

Right. And its not worth it. Too much work for shit money

pretty common in my country, they call this behind the scene. they actually include it in package as optional add-ons.
I just sold my raw footage for €500 + VAT.🤪🤪🤪

20 minutes just to say if they are willing to pay for it then yes.
Thanks man saved me 18mins

How long after a wedding have you reached out to a couple?

This is what we do in the Philippines. We call it as "Full feature edit" or "Full edit".
I think we're overloading the term "Raw". What you mean to refer to are "Rushes", raw footage is raw sensor data. Nice video thank you, Matt!

Man thank you for this info. I'm aiming to do side Hustles on weekend in the future. That some good money right there in one day.

Italian wedding videographer / photographer. Interesting!
no! not me... offering FOMO edits for free lol
NO.
No
Unrelated. Matt, you're looking kind of jacked brother.
Yes. Just like photographers should give their clients the raw photos, edits (psd), etc. Videographers should give the raw footage. It's their property, it would not exist if they didn't pay to have you make it. Give it to them.
