Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail
www.nps.gov/gr...
An exuberant mountain stream gave this area its unusual name. Roaring Fork is one of the larger and faster flowing mountain streams in the park. Drive this road after a hard rain and the inspiration behind the name will be apparent.
The narrow, winding, Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail invites you to slow down and enjoy the forest and historic buildings of the area. The 5.5-mile-long, one-way, loop road is a favorite side trip for many people who frequently visit the Smokies. It offers rushing mountain streams, glimpses of old-growth forest, and a number of well-preserved log cabins, gristmills, and other historic buildings. Please note that the road is closed in winter.
Before entering the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, a stop at the Noah “Bud” Ogle self-guiding nature trail offers a walking tour of an authentic mountain farmstead and surrounding hardwood forest. Highlights include a streamside tubmill and the Ogle’s handcrafted wooden flume plumbing system.
Just beyond the Ogle farmstead is the trailhead for Rainbow Falls, one of the park's most popular waterfalls. The hike to the falls is 5.4 miles roundtrip and is considered moderately strenuous. If you plan to attempt this hike, be sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots and carry plenty of water and snacks.
The entrance to the motor nature trail is located a short distance past the parking areas for Rainbow Falls. Several homes and other buildings have been preserved in this area. The trailhead for Grotto Falls, another of the park's most popular waterfalls, is located along the route. And a “wet weather” waterfall called Place of a Thousand Drips provides a splendid finale to your journey. An inexpensive booklet available at the beginning of the motor nature trail details landmarks along the route.
Directions
To access Roaring Fork, turn off the main parkway in Gatlinburg, TN at traffic light #8 and follow Historic Nature Trail Road to the Cherokee Orchard entrance to the national park. Just beyond the Rainbow Falls trailhead you have the option of taking the one-way Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail (closed in winter). Please note that buses, trailers, and motor homes are not permitted on the motor nature trail.
Mileage to Roaring Fork:
from Gatlinburg-1
from Cherokee-35

@@timkrause5081 our pleasure!
Thank you for this. We went this morning and it was AMAZING!! Thank you
We just spent a week in the Smokies, and this is our favorite destination. We do the Roaring Fork loop at least twice a day. We saw a total of 30 bear during our week long visit, most were on this loop. Love your channel, keep the videos coming.
Thanks Johnny!
Grotto Falls is one of our favorite hikes. It is the first falls we ever walked to in Gatlinburg. Rainbow falls is a little longer hike, but both are very reasonable. Either one of these trails can take you to Mount LeConte, but we haven't done that one yet.
Mount LeConte is on our to do list!
What I love about your channel is I learn of places I did not know of. So informative. The trees are Beautiful. Thanks
Our pleasure!
Boiled peanuts are wonderful!!! Wow, what a way to commune with God and nature!❤❤❤
Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail is awesome!
Salted peanuts in a bottle of coke, now that’s made in heaven!😊
Great video ! AWSOME colors & views ! Plus wildlife in a perfect day ! Definitely one of your best !!!
Thanks Diamondback!
Boiled peanuts are greater if you find American ones. Lots of guys are getting them imported from Mexico (cheaper). Virginia peanuts are so much bigger and better tasting.
We were just there a few weeks ago. We couldn’t get a parking spot at the trailheads, so we didn’t do any hiking. That overlook is beautiful in the summer but it’s beyond words in the fall. Cheers!

I'm a fan of grotto falls more than rainbow. Rainbow gains much more elevation and is more difficult. Grotto is much more manageable, so it's more enjoyable.
👍
My daughter has hiked to Grotto Falls twice, but not Rainbow. She likes Grotto because the hike is fairly easy and you get to walk behind the falls.
If I am in Gatlinburg, do I start on Cherokee Orchard Rd? Is the loop one-way?
What are you using for shots above your vehicle? Drone? Is so what make/model.
Thanks for the ride. I've never seen any bears but have seen deer on there. The colors are beautiful. I had planned a trip this week, but it didn't work out. So, I missed the leaves again. Oh, that's right, you showed them to me. I loved boiled peanuts, regular not cajun.. It's a Southern delicacie. Thanks again for another great video and all your hard work. God Bless. ❤️
Our pleasure Renee!
Loving it. Never heard of this and I've lived in Tennessee since I was two weeks old. Debbie
Thanks for showing us this trail! My sister and I did this a couple of weeks ago and loved it! We stopped at that area that you said you had never been too before & saw the beautiful Mountain View that you saw. We also stopped and hiked Grotto Falls. It’s only a 1.4 mile hike one way, however it is uphill all the way! It has a 585 ft elevation and would consider it a moderate hike at a minimum. But the hike is worth it once you get to the falls! We also stopped at Ely’s Mill. At that time they had a beautiful assortment of glass blown Christmas ornaments too!
Hopefully we can do the hike soon, thanks for sharing your experience!
I can't remember when or how I found out about Roaring Fork Road trail. But I absolutely love it. I try to drive it each trip up there, but our last trip up there about 4 years ago, we didn't drive it. We stopped at that general store and got a jar of dilly beans. So good. Oh and I also love boiled peanuts. I grew up eating them and still love them.
👍
That's one of our favorite things to do when we come up from North Mississippi every year after Christmas. Luckily we usually see one or more bears. Heading that way the day after Christmas this year as usual. Wish I was there seeing all this beautiful color now. Thanks for such a peaceful and colorful ride along.
Our pleasure Robert!
Where is the Ely Mills Store. We went last month but the road to Grotto falls was closed.
Wow...the leaf colors... Absolutely gorgeous.
👍
Love the fall foliage. We have been to the area spring, summer and winter seasons so these videos are great. We took a Pink Jeep tour through Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail and saw our first bear during the trip. It was the last week of April 2022 and spring views were beautiful also. Thank you Ryan for another great video.
Our pleasure!
We have hiked both Rainbow Falls and Grotto. I like grotto because there aren’t as many stairs. A few years ago when we did rainbow falls it was super exhausting for us but we had a 16 year old practically running uphill to keep up with. We may try rainbow falls again. Grotto we’ve done twice and both times it wasn’t crowded.
Thanks, sounds like i'll try Grotto first with the kiddos!
I absolutely love your videos. My husband and I are planning a trip during Thanksgiving week and your videos has definitely been prepping us. I do have a question are these trails/ mountains mid size car friendly lol ?!
Thanks Shakara! I did this drive in a large Toyota Tundra Truck with no issues. Hope you have a great time when you come to The Smokies!
Bri, doesn't like boiled peanuts? I think you might want to reconsider your relationship.😂😂😂😂
She is happy to get me boiled peanuts and beets anytime 😁
What exact day of October is this taken?
What an amazing video! Im taking my daughter to Gatlinburg this July and this motor trail is on my to do list! Quick question! I have a horrible sense of direction and is that small little trail you took on the overlook easy to navigate to and from?
It’s not to hard to navigate, thanks Andrea!
Boiled peanuts are not a favorite in our house.
Curious to know which month you went here and was it toward the end or beginning of the month? We would love to catch these Fall colors!!😍
This was the end of October.
Wow, never knew about this trail. Will have to go on it next time we are in the area. The fall colors are beautiful!!! I am also not a fan of boiled peanuts. LOL
😁👍
Great video we’re in the park every month, and Roring fork is our favorite drive, so much better than Cades Cove
Thanks Doglover!
I love boiled peanuts. Probably better than any type of peanut. Well I take that back. I also like roasted peanuts as well.
🥜👍
Wow stunning thank you ! Sorry but Team No boiled peanuts they are gross lol
Our pleasure Mullins!
Leave those beans alone! I tried them and not a fan. Thanks for the drive it was beautiful scenery.
👍
Ive done both and both are worth the walk
Looks like a beautiful fall day! Beautiful views.
Thanks for the tour, absolutely beautiful
👍
👍
Thanks for the video.
We will be in TN this June and would like to take this road. The part where you said have the bravest person drive, approximately how long is that stretch? I am not crazy about heights!
Our pleasure, it’s not too long imo. Most is pretty manageable.
Thanks!
Roasted peanut guy here by the way!
Tasted them once didn't like them . Beautiful video.
Thanks Deb!
Great video, beautiful fall colors.good job 👍
Thanks!
Is Hannah going to work at Dollywood for Christmas this year
No, she is not.
Done both rainbow and grotto and Grotto is by far the better waterfall , grotto4life
👍
🍁🍂⛰️Love it 🥰 love it🥰
👍
I heard that bears aren’t hibernating like they used to due to human food waste.
They don’t hibernate as people think they do here.
@@AdventureIsOutThere I think it is due to having food available year round.
Is the park pass required to stop and park?
Only if you park for more than 15 minutes. Here is our parking guide: ruclips.net/video/gYFUH_s_eAk/видео.html
What a beautiful neighborhood! Thank you for sharing!
Our pleasure!
LeVe the boiled peanuts🤢🤢
👍😁
Just beautiful 😮🍁💛🍂🧡 We always love to do this motor trail ❤ Thanks for sharing your adventures 🤗🍁🍂🧡 God bless
Our pleasure Pamela!
We were there twice last week. Beautiful 😊
🍂👍
Grotto Falls was my first hike in the Smokies in December 2017 on our honeymoon. I fell in love with the Smokies, and one day we plan to make it home. Thank you for your videos. We didn’t visit this year, yet, so this helps fill the void. Fall is one of my favorite times of year to visit. Keep the videos coming!!!
Will do Tricia!
We saw 5 tonight around 6pm. We were coming back from Cashiers, NC!!!
Congrats!
Nice seeing those Table Mountain Pines are now nearly 6-7’ foot tall. That area of Roaring Fork on the scenic view short trail you took was burnt in the 2016 fire. The Table Mountain Pine Cones open and release new seeds in a forest fire, very similar to the Jack Pine in the upper Midwest. Nice to see a new forest is born after such destruction and pain.
🌲🌲🌲👍👍
Love boiled peanuts!
🥜😁👍
Thank you for showing these nature things and hiking in the area! We love to hike but never know which trails to take. We don’t want anything strenuous but moderate to easy with great views or falls. Thank you! Love you guys videos. It’s also cool to watch another homeschool family.

Our pleasure Savannah!
Cajun boiled peanuts! Yum,Yum, one more week and were there! Hope we see you ,so we can get a sticker, lol! Blessings! Sam & Pam
Hope you have a great time! 👍
Amen to your comment about Mr. Rodgers. I was a Viewer of the show. ☺️💖 Yes eat and enjoy because I would. ☺️💖
👍
Absolutely beautiful day in the neighborhood. I vote Grotto Falls for a nice family hike. Rainbow Falls is stunning but that elevation gain is no joke😛
👍
Great Video! Glad you took time to show the beauty of Roaring Fork as well as the previous video at Clingmans Dome. Two of my three favorite places with Cades Cove. There’s nothing like watching a sunset at Clingmans Dome when the clouds are right. Always hike to the tower every single night when I am down there just to see it.
Thanks Brad!
We saw a momma and her cubs on the Motor Trail a few years back. We are heading there this Thursday for the weekend. We live in Texas but love the Smokies... Thanks for your videos.
Our pleasure Donald!
Thanks for sharing, great video of the journey! Brings back memories!

Our pleasure SMD!
Wow it’s so beautiful colors leaf 🍂 ❤
Oh my favorite boiled peanut 🥜 so delicious.
👍
Bullhead Trail to The Pulpit is very cool. Not a popular trail but some pretty stellar views to the North and then as you wrap around the back of the ridge, you walk thru where the 🔥 was. Outstanding views to the West and South and Mt. LeConte.
Will have to go further next time...thanks!
Wow Ryan thanks for sharing so beautiful. I love boiled peanuts also and Renee' agrees with Bree.
Our pleasure!
Absolutely gorgeous!
My husband was terrified driving on that road.

Beautiful filming of that area. It's on my bucket list!!!
Thanks Deb!
Very beautiful 🤩 fall day on the great Smokey mountains ⛰
👍
When my husband and I were in Tennessee we had a couple of bear sightings!!! What truly special moments!! Sorry Brie but I love boiled peanuts ❤
I love Boiled Peanuts also, can’t get them up here in Michigan. Our first stop when arriving is in Wears Valley for Boiled Peanuts at the wood carver, same parking lot as Moonshine distillery. Then we head to Mountain Brothers for the freshly made Pork Rinds… Great way to start a vacation in the South lol.
🥜😁👍
Ty 4 video I go every yr but this yr..soo beautiful ❤😊
Our pleasure!
Beautiful drive. Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure!
My favorite thing about Gatlinburg.
My favorite stop is #14. You can’t see the waterfall unless you stop there get out of the car and turn around.
We have had very little rain, so I figured I'll feature it in a future drive.
It’s so beautiful.
Better in the Spring, I would imagine.
I used to live on River Road, so I went there all the time.
Wow
👍
That motor trail never disappoints! Great video! 🌞🌴
Thanks ET!
That’s my second favorite ride.
👍

I love the fall in the Smokies…..or any time really lol.

Ryan, what a wonderful adventure. Outside of Cades Cove the Roaring Fork motor nature trail is our favorite drive. Those colors were amazing. So beautiful!! We saw bears at same location. That view from the stopping point was amazing. We have stopped there but never took the hike. Thanks forcsharing this wonderful adventure. The Mountains are absolutely stunning. We also stopped at the mill at the end of the trail. Throughly enjoyed this video.😮
Like you I love boiled peanuts. Especially when they are fresh and hot
Glad you enjoyed it SMM!

Looks like a fun day.
It was a nice day indeed!
Looks like your flying solo, nice sights, not sure I can get use to your 360 degree camera everything seems to be all the trees tend to bend over your past river rapids adventures were interesting , but miss the family 😢😢
Yeah, Brie was doing school with the kids & then had to take them to the orthadontist in Knoxville. I just wanted to get out of the home office. I would like to bring them back and do both of the 2 waterfalls in future videos!
This video is so calming and peaceful thanks for sharing 🥰
