Examining JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr. throws at Combine | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC
/ nflonnbc - Спорт
Penix's arm strength is nuts. The dude throws off his back foot with the power and accuracy most college QBs have with a firm plant, lol
Bust
Bo Nix will be the best of this class.
😅
Penix to Seattle would be perfect
Las Vegas
Denver
yes it would
Perfect in what way? That he played his college ball in the state of Washington? Both of this guy's wheels are already retreads!
@@scottgood7888 … Nobody is perfect then? Perfect for the Raiders with the 13th or 44th pick? Kirk Cousins is coming off of an Achilles injury and yet he got the biggest payday of ANY free agent this year. Penix is what he is .. a play action pocket passer that has a big arm with touch…. If the Raiders had a top 3 pick then Jayden Daniels would’ve been the guy….The absolute perfect guy the Raiders should’ve gotten was CJ Stroud last year? GM Zeigler had a trade ready to go allegedly but our loser, dip 💩 coach at the time Josh McDaniel didn’t want Stroud… he wanted the guy that Carolina took… and squashed the stroud trade…. You saw first hand how that worked out??? So now what’s left is Michael Penix jr. who with 2 bad wheels came in 2nd in the heisman last year… I watched him tear up Texas last year in the sugar bowl with 2 td’s and 430 yards ( with bad wheels) on New Years Day… didn’t bother me he came up short against Michigan last year. But the kid was stellar…. Nobody throws a better 🏈 than Penix in this draft… not even Caleb….The QB’s can do things better that Penix minus the injuries but not throwing the ball…. Opinions vary… but you get him cheap? …let him sit behind Minschew and learn and rest … in a year or 2 you just might have something? We’ll see? They compare Penix somewhat to Tua… and that dude has a ton of injuries … the Dolphins 🐬 just let Christian Wilkins walk in Free Agency ( thank you very much🙏) in order to save cap space so they can resign Tua next year? So past injuries don’t always determine a player’s abilities or future success? … Penix is the guy. JMO. 👍
States QBs are avoiding combine to not get overly scrutinized. Proceeds to overly scrutinize QBs that threw at the combine.
Exactly lol
they can't justify a paycheck otherwise.... nature of the game.
The QBs who didn't throw are all wimps.
Go Blue!
Bo Nix can play day one 😊
Never seen Penix without his head covered
Waves!!
Bo Nix would be perfect in NY with Daboll. High football IQ and quick processor. They can really scheme out things together. Bo Nix is the obvious choice. Most game experience, best decision maker, best accuracy, and best pressure to sack %, fewest interceptions, and a whole lot yards and TDs. Strong arm, good athlete, mobile, can throw from different angles and off platform, Pre and post snap processing, throws routine plays consistenly, etc.... This is my guy. I see him as potential combo of Drew Brees Light, Baker Mayfield Heavy, and Russell Wilson sprinkled in. He is a gamer who was born to play football. I see him imo as Flutie or Fitzpatrick 2.0. This guy is a grinder that his teammates are gonna believe in and go to work for.
Good Afternoon
For me the top 3 not taking part makes me think weakness .. if u have nothing to fear turn up prove it
Doesn't it work both ways when you talk about receivers screwing up routes in the combine? in other words you are saying that the guys that sat out can only shine when they have the guys they work with on the daily out in the routes. How does that help the "top guys"?
Penix would have won the Heisman if he had been in the SEC. Fast pre-snap reads, crazy arm, proven leadership. The limit to his draft stock is his medical history and side-arm delivery. Keep him healthy and he has the ceiling of a Warren Moon or a Mark Brunell.
Penix leads his receivers BEAUTIFULLY!! Only day one NFL starter throwing at the combine.
I think the game against Michigan proves otherwise. He is going to get pressured like that regularly in the NFL and he didn't perform well under pressure.
Hold your L dude is a back up in the nfl at best 💯
@@WEAPON-MRX I saw Herbert, Hurts, and Love throw four years ago. Herbert threw dimes everywhere. Hurts missed his receivers on intermediate and deep passes out of bounds, where only his receivers could catch them. Love missed his deep balls by 5 yards. Penix looked just like Herbert. Maybe better. McCarthy was somewhere between Hurts and Love. McCarthy needs a year to develop. He missed several passes behind his receiver. I wouldn't draft Bo Nix to be a backup. He had one of the weakest arms and didn't impress anyone with his accuracy.
McCarthy is the way, the truth, and the light to take a team to the promised land . He is NFL day one ready ....He should be first pick in 1st round. He's so much smarter than all the others.
@@ernestkovach3305 McCarthy is inaccurate with a big arm. The QB from Tennessee is a carbon copy. Milton is a ton cheaper. Needs the same coaching and development. McCarthy is a late one. Milton is an early two. Bias
who cares what the media says...they dont draft a single player...screw the media...perform for the scouts and show your stuff and show you are not a coward.
U guys are great. Chris simms is the best sports guy to listen to.
Especially with QBs.
I like him, but he always looks like a Nazi to me
He is very informative but to me he sounds like he is drunk all the time 😅
Oh my God Florio looks like he's asleep the whole time!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
So what's more important arm strength or 77% completion rate? Bo made a lot of great down field
throws while at Oregon.
Remember JJ just turned 21. That has to be a factor.
Problem is if he takes 3 yrs to develop teams gotta pay him millions to start as a Rook then make decision on extension based on just the 1 yr
@@dexterriley One of the attractive thing about JJ is he's been coached by Harbaugh in a prostyle offense for 3 years. He is ready to play from day 1. Teams won't open up the playbook, but he can step in and be a good game manager. Do what he does at best - control the clock, make a good 3rd down decision, and just don't make mistakes. he isn't out there to slinging it all over the place like rookie peyton manning.
I love Penix as a draft option. The one thing I cant get past is his injury history. So many teams draft these incredible players but if he goes to a team that cant protect him, he is going to get banged up a lot. Rookies on average get sacked a lot. There is absolutely zero question the young man is talented. Id draft him 1 or 2 in the 1st round if not for the injury history. But with the injury history, I'd argue day 2 or 3.
I want him to fall to a team with a good OLine for that reason.
As a Viking fan I really hope we go defense round one and get Penix round 2.
He got hurt a lot as a dual-threat guy at Indiana, but he hasn't missed a game in two years at UW as a drop-back guy, who only runs when the play isn't there. He's also won with a lot less overall talent around him than Nix or McCarthy, and he's been great at moving in the pocket and avoiding the sack.
At least he has shown the ability to return from injury and play at a high level at least among his current competition. Everyone has seen plenty of fully healthy QBs go high in the draft and play horrible for numerous reasons. You never know
As a Raiders fan, the last time the Raiders drafted a QB based on "letting it rip" they ended up with Jamarcus Russell. 😂
He didn’t care to try different situation
Would you believe JJ McCarthy has the same college stats as JaMarcus Russell?
Russell was missing a brain, like most of the failures in the National Felon League
BB not letting Mac Jones throw was an indictment on Mac Jones. Cmon now, don't try to switch it up.
If only they had a huge sample size of these players in actual games making actual game time throws…
How many of those games were against guys who will be playing at the next level? Every QB ever drafted was fantastic while in college, however the majority of those guys fail because once they went up against NFL talent every week they were not the same player. Every single QB that became a bust had great college tape and it meant absolutely nothing.
@@jlv3x means more than the combine
@@jlv3xcollege game is becoming more like the pros, look at how many rookies are starting to adjust to the NFL quicker than before, CJ stroud for example.
Games Attempts yards
Bo Nix 61* 1,936 15,352
Jayden Daniels 55 1,438 12,749
Penix 48 1,685 13,741
Attempts negative or positive, are game reps and an opportunity
to learn the position in a real game. All three had a lot of attempts.
They have plenty of game tape on these guys.
*NCAA Record
Chris Simms is such a good analyst!! He tells it like it is 👍👍👍
JD, Michael PJr, Joe and JJ are guys that can start for an NFL team. Caleb, Drake, Bo B level. They have elite skills, but need some development from coaches, so they can better realize their huge potential.
I don’t think McCarthy will make it out of top 10.. 12 is lowest but he won’t last past 10 in my opinion. He translates well to the NFL
You literally just heard that on tv and are acting like you decided that because your own mock draft skills lol
If you want to hide a QB in the offense like Michigan did with him. There's a reason he hardly threw the ball. They knew the more he threw the worse it gets. Only throw when the guy is wide open. Now he could end up good. But I think he'll be a Jimmy G type player. When the team can make him look good, he'll look good. Just like Michigan made JJ look good.
@@larrylindgren9484 I’m saying he could be an okay game manager because that’s what he was in Michigan. Get a good rb cause apparently he’s good at handing the ball off lol. Not every team is going to have a Mahomes, burrow, Lamar, or Allen so gotta find a way to make the best of what’s left. Def glad my team has Mahomes though!
@@larrylindgren9484 he has elite throwing on the run skills and processes well . He also can consistently make throws in small windows and is someone who looks better in person and on film . I think he is the second best quarterback after Caleb and his skillset translates better to the pro game . Don’t let that Michigan run heavy offense fool you. He is a baller and it will be shown
JJ was coached by an some who played QB at Michigan played 14 seasons in the NFL, has coached with great success in college and the NFL.
He has great talent, he’s smart, has gone injury free in his career, tell me who’s has the best chance for success at the next level?
Want to see him in Purple!
JJ needs to go to a good system and sit for a year or 2 behind a vet, learn the system, develop a bit more (because of the system he came from), and he will be a monster. He's young and doesn't have all the throws to his name, though he is pretty good at figuring out the defenses.
Like the giants. Sits behind Jones for a year. Learns a Daboll offense. Giants continue to build the line and playmakers. Turn keys over to JJ. If I’m the giants I try to trade back a few picks and take JJ in the top 10
I don’t think y’all understand the system he came from like you think you do. I thought he needed another year in college, but he’s way closer than you think.
For anybody that can read this. I am doing a poll. What is your team, and which team do you want to see draft Caleb Williams?
I thought JJ looked the most inaccurate of all QBs. I had no preference in watching, just noticing who was catchable and who was not. They all had the same circumstances with receivers they didn't know, and others were throwing catches. Hartman and Milton were throwing with anticipation, for example, very catchable balls. Milton was very accurate, and seem to have the most control over his arc and speed. Milton let it rip, and looked effortless throwing 60yds.
I've said it all year long. Michael Penix is the best passing quarterback in the draft. Can't understand why these so called scouts have him so far down the qb draft board?
Those ACL tears didn't help.
He's older than teams want. They want 22 not 26. He's been healthy the last 2 years. So, it's not that. It's age and he wasn't a QB who was 1 read a run. Everyone thinks you need a QB who gets 1000 yards running. You don't. If the QB can't throw you win nothing. Look no farther than the Raven. Jackson isn't good in the pocket. When he has to make the play from the pocket the Ravens lose. The playoff against KC was the perfect example. He throws a ball that was into what triple coverage for a team crushing INT. That's Jackson. Yet everyone wants one. Why you don't win with one. You win with guy who make plays in the pocket who can run but it's not something they want to do. Penix can run but he chooses to actually throw the ball. Shocking a QB who throws the ball. If a team keeps him upright, he'll be very good. Just as good as Williams.
@@larrylindgren9484Finally someone says it. Running QBs don't win championships.
@@hcb2000And they do not last long in the NFL!
Chris Simms is best football analyst in sports rite now. N i don't think its close
throwing at the combine means throwing to unfamiliar receivers, (how fast is this guy, how far should I throw it, and I gotta make him look good too
To be fair, Williams hasn't already done it against Penix. They played once in 2 years and Penix won including a couple killer throws.
Refusing to do the combine without being injured should be seen as a character flaw. The player can't be bothered with it because they're too good.
Trevor and Burrow did it should they have been looked at with character concerns?
This happens almost every year nothing new
Not really, it's pointless for some positions and players. No reason to do it and risk injury. The medicals, weigh ins, interviews are the most important for QBs. the pro day will do the same as the combine. I think the combine workouts are huge for other positions though. it can make or break some prospects.
so the combine is more important than 30 games in college?
It's a clean slate, where in college there might be scheme, or competition issues, that make it hard to compare to what an NFL team wants to do.
It's a job interview, bro. You can look at someone's resume all you want, but until you actually meet them, you don't know what you have.
Bo Nix wasn’t being conservative, he was playing to his brand. High completion percentage. I hope someone drafts him high so they can have a 35 year old QB who had to go to a great coach and offense and still lose to UDUB twice. Good luck with Nix
Why aren’t you playing the actual videos you talk about instead of showing the picture of the guy?
Not allowed
JJ reminds me of Aikman with a stronger arm. Penix is the most interesting QB for me this year. If I was a team looking for a QB, I would be glad I wasn't number 1 in the draft, or trade it for Penix if I thought he would be there for me.
Aikman with a better arm??? JJ is like 6'3" 200lbs! Aikman is 6'5" 230 with a cannon!
At best JJ is Derek Carr! At best! 😂
@@deyampert3738 Hint, hint, I like Carr more then I like Aikman.
@@chrissinclair4442 well thats a shame! 🤣
@@deyampert3738 JJ McCarthy weighed in at 219lbs so you're way off there. Aikman was listed at 6'4" and 219lbs during his playing days, so again way off. McCarthy hit 61mph velocity and easily threw the ball 60+ yards in the air during throwing drills. He has a cannon, also. But don't let facts get in the way of your bias.
I wanna see guys who wanna compete no matter what
Williams seems to be a diva. Bad attitude for the leader of a team!
As a Broncos fan I hope we take Penix, we passed on Lamar and Josh, this would be the right move
Its a crapshoot. Look at all the guys that have gone in first round and were busts
I am convinced certain QBs (lol) no matter what they do are being lifted by media. While there are some who are dictating and it’s rubbing guys that look like these two the wrong way.
Talk about age is ridiculous. Teams drafting them are only thinking about the first two contracts anyway.
Your logic is how Pittsburgh ended up with Kenny Pickett.
the best players spend the mandatory three years out of high school trying not to get hurt. that is why age matters
Penix’s games were on at 9p’ to midnight on thrash coast. That’s the only reason he’s not the Heisman winner and a top 2 pick. All the criticisms of Penix are also present in every other top QB, BUT he is the best passer on the most difficult throws of any QB in the draft and that is not something a guy like McCarthy is going to suddenly acquire in the NFL.
JJ completely outplayed Penix, head to head!
Penix to D.K. Would be perfect
Any word on Spencer Rattler or does he have another year?
He threw pretty well, 40 time was bad and hes the shortest QB coming out this year. Probably 4th round.
@@john670
Appreciate you
The one thing on Bo Nix as a better pro prospect is the pro game mostly throws less than 15 yards down the field, the defensive rushers are over powering.
McCarthy is going to be a top 10 pick. I think he will be what Bryce Young enthusiasts thought Bryce could be in NFL. He’s got the size and arm Bryce doesn’t.And even if he’s only 21, he played in an NFL offense . He won’t be underprepared to command and offense .
The difference....Bryce has the production, McCarthy doesn't. Whenever he was asked to throw the ball more than 20x, it didn't look good. JJ certainly has the tool set but it's too early to say he will be successful.
@@future_teknokrat7585JJ has good production for the type of offense he was in
To play 3 seasons in college and attempted the same amount of throws than CJ Stroud did in 1 season at Ohio State. People said they didn’t see enough to judge Stroud, what the hell can be said about JJ? He attempted less passes than QBs people call run first QBs.
In games this past season in which JJ had more than 25 pass attempts in a game (5 games) his statistics were
110/163 1,280 yards 10 tds ZERO ints
@@Hengel_Andrews football has become ultimate frisbee....probably a good thing for the game that the ultimate frisbee conference is now absorbed into the manball line of scrimmage conference.
Drake maye and Bo nix are going to be the best two QBs to come out of this draft by a mile 💯
Lol, Predictions are all insane comments!
The teams are so desperate for Q's that JJ will go in the top 4. Cards trade down to say the Giants and they take him at 4.
If Daboll goes another yr with Jones he'll be fired~
They should be required to throw. Or participate in the combine. It’s good Tv.
Penix is the only player that can succeed in year one with a team like NE. He gets rid of the ball quickly, and has a history of making average receivers better. He did it at IU and if you don’t believe me on UW look at the trio’s numbers before Penix(yikes). None of these other QB’s can elevate the talent on NE with the close exception of Daniels. I’d trade back with a QB hungry team like LV who wants JD and take Penix. Then with that draft capital you can get a few weapons in this WR heavy draft. Penix is will go earlier than what these mock drafters think.
McCarthy is the most complete and best QB in the draft. He is the most unselfish, most intelligent, best educated
But can he throw the football to guys that aren't wide open? Being a smart guy doesn't make you a smart QB. Being unselfish doesn't make you a good QB.
lol!!! Keep dreaming
@@larrylindgren9484 QB's can all throw the ball....it's what they do. Not all have the brains to outsmart what the defenses are doing. Coaching is a huge part of any QB's success also
It's hard to scout the processing of a QB.brady and purdy were late guys.and it also doesn't hurt to go to the right team and how they develop.mcarthy and nix could be good.but if you go to the Steelers or titans teams that don't have a great history of developing QBs you can get lost.
Why are you guys talking about throwing in shirts and t-shirts like it means anything?
The throws are on tape. Let me know when Simms actually does his evaluations.
How often is Simms right about something?
Yall keeping making excuses for Caleb Williams and all top 3 quarterbacks have them compete like everyone else seems kinda soft to me
It would be to Penix advantage to be drafted in mid to late 1st round. If you are drafted at beginning of 1st round, you will be landing on a crap team that will have no protection. Seattle drafts 16 which is early but they don't draft again til 3rd round. If they plan on a QB they are forced to go 1st.
Or...they trade back in the 1st round, gain a second rounder and have a pick swap somewhere in the 4th round to make it happen.
Fyi hes the same age # as Jayden Daniels but nobody talks about it
Penix Jr will be a perfect fit for the Vikings..
Only if a day 2 or 3 pick
McCarthy would look much better in Purple!
No Spencer Rattler?
I really liked the way Rattler threw the ball at the combine. I dont like him as a top tier Qb though.
Penix is the best QB in this class ( yes, better than Williams).
Apologies. I meant Bo Nix, as the best QB in this class. Sorry 😅
@@jkrasney1 No need to apologize, you wrong either way, Lol
All the media are twisting themselves into pretzels hyping McCarthy. So because Michigan did not need him to be great every game is now somehow an asset? How about the fact that Micheal Penix had to be damn near perfect every game for his team to win and yeas he had great receivers but no defense and not much of a running game. I’m not saying McCarthy sucks but he is being way over hyped
I see people like you twisting to underplay him. The dude’s a 5 star who was in the heisman race for good reason until he got hurt against penn state. He had mediocre stats the rest of the season, and it’s true they didn’t need him. I think you may need to be a fan to watch the earlier games to see the moments where he shines. His passes were dimes that didn’t seem different to penix’s to me until he lost that balance with the lower body injury I was talking about. It’s par for the course to me that he’s shining after a little time to rehab, and I fully expect him to exceed expectations in the nfl. He’s not able to run a 40 yet, but was clocked at a 4.4 earlier this season in case he can get back to that

Statistically likely that at least three, maybe four of these guys are going to be busts. Wondering who the most surprising flop will be.
Florio is so annoying and arrogant how he just blatantly interrupts Simms when he doesn’t know a third of what Simms knows. So Caleb going 7-5 at USC is his stock? I am a UM alum and realize that JJ has something to prove and not guaranteed but it’s funny when the talking head says Caleb has nothing to prove and acts like he is a future HOF candidate. Caleb is over hyped
Ignoring promising Cam Newtonesque QB "Giant Joe" Milton (6'5," 240lbs, 4.78/40 yd)

Milton is awful. Great measurables. Fails at everything else,
The WRs not knowing how to run a basic route tree argument is asinine. I played WR at a high school where we almost never threw and guess what we still practiced a running every route. Mike Florio, After Simms says that Caleb Williams decided not to throw at the combine, "What's the need to? What's the point"? Hey jackass, it's the NFL Combine. This is the opportunity top throw the ball in front of the GM's and reps from all 32 Teams looking to draft players for the NFL!!! That's why they are there, and that's why you should use the opportunity to demonstrate your skills, even on a canned level. This is an easy workout for a QB. You gather, you meet with the various pro teams, you get to know them, they get to know you. And you throw the ball a little and let them see your strength throwing the ball, your timing, and your arm mechanics. Why would q college player looking to get drafted not want to show everyone what he's got - especially if he is confident in his ability to throw the ball. Instead, GM's are left to wonder why, and to look at other QB's who are and engaged in the process of showing off their talents. I fully expect Caleb Williams to drop into the 3 or 4th QB picked in this draft. we'll see.
Mike triggered an NFL fanboy. You do realize these guys have pro days and private workouts, not to mention his college tape combine is not the be all end all relax he's not going to be the 3rd or 4th qb taken stop hating
Why does Caleb want to throw in front of every team? He's going to be a top 3 overall pick...most likely #1. Nothing good can come out of him throwing at the combine so why do it? You and I may not like it but it's the truth.
If Simms is crying what the baby gonna do?
Florio is such a bad analyst.
McCarthy threw 3 ints vs Bowling Green…. But maybe he wasn’t getting signs vs Jack Harbaughs old team…. Lol
One bad game where he was pressing.
Take away those 3 ints and how many did he throw all year?
Stop with the signs nonsense. Look what they did afterwards. Signs weren’t anything to do with their success.
@@dhaddine5472 oh so now its “their” success? I thought this was about JJ? Who also only threw 8 times vs Penn State because he was a liability. Keep pivoting 👍🏻
@@nogalzurc you didn’t watch the PSU game at all, huh? It’s obvious with the idiocy spewing forth from your mouth. It wasn’t JJ that was the liability. It was their OTs. Coaches changed things up to run underneath the hard rushing DEs. Didn’t need to pass, so they just didn’t. You don’t really understand the game of football AT ALL, do you?
I think simms is all about the technical aspects of the quarterbacks and he ignores the character a lot.
Bo Nix is 37 years old.
He’ll be the same age as burrow was coming into his rookie year, quit talking
24, lol.
