    I've grown 3 red robin plants this year in 1 of my raised beds, I've only fed them once (no signs of nutrient deficiencies) but I've got thousands of tomatoes and trusses with up to 18 fruit on each, this bush type tomato is only supposed to grow 18 inches, which is why I chose this variety but they are now 5ft tall and still more flowers are coming, although I wanted a dwarf type tomato plant, I think I'll be growing just 1 every year as they taste amazing, I've only been growing fruit & veg for 2 years and I've learnt most of it from you, I'm now online shopping for indoor growing equipment, can't stand the thought of not growing any plants over the winter months so thanks for getting me hooked Gary, I love my new hobby 😁

    Actually, even the newest varieties introduced this year through the DTP, are quite large. When Craig LeHoullier started the project, he had LOTS of helpers and I believe their interest was more about taste and still maintain the dwarf status (at least the ones I grew out). But some of them need 15 gallon containers to grow. In fact one of my favorites that came out of the project is "Sweet Sue". It was a stellar success and considered a dwarf but grows to 5' tall. Bottom line, people should not be fooled into thinking that just because a tomato says "dwarf" that it's only going to get a foot tall. That's a myth. I have 25 varieties selected for 2017 to grow out from the project and only 1 of them is under 2' tall.

    I love the red robin tomatoe plants. The majority of the plant is tomatoes. I currently have 5 that have produced well over what I expected. They have a beautiful tomatoe flavor and they are gorgeous! I have all different sizes of tomatoes on the plant, most are on the larger side of the spectrum. I would totally recommend this tomatoe plant for anyone really and I live in an apartment!

    Gary, I have saved seeds from a dwarf variety I've grown for a year now called Hahms Gelbe. They are amazing little orange cherry tomatoes, smaller than those shown in this video, and I've grown them easily to harvest under my grow lights. In 2015, I grew them from seed to first harvest in about 90 days under the lights. The indoor fruits were expectedly a bit tart, but once I hardened them off and transplanted them outdoors, they became extremely sweet and produced continually through early October (I'm in Colorado zone 5b with hot days and cool nights). If you're interested in trying this variety, I'd love to send you some seeds. I started this season's seedlings two weeks ago and had 24/25 germinate. They began setting their first set of true leaves before they even reached an inch tall.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 года назад

      So the determinate bloom once in quantity over a week or two. They can hang around alive and kicking with some small blooms but nothing to get excited about. If you cut the dead stuff back, sometimes they regrow and start over. But that takes a while.

    Very surprised these are Det, because I planted these in pots from seed, Grew them under T4 lights in an inexpensive greenhouse inside. They produced tremendous amount of fruit but they grew taller than 10 inches. They continued to produce fruit for three months. Had fresh tomatoes in the winter. Experiment was to see if blight spread more with dirt or with rain. Learned that it was rain more than the soil that spread blight. None of these dwarf tomatoes developed blight, biggest problem was that they out grew the greenhouse.

    Hello. Thank you for your video. I have a question about transplanting dwarf tomatoes. I've grown mine from seed for the first time, but if regular tomatoes get transplanted at about 4 inches tall, how tall should dwarf tomatoes be in order to transplant. Alternatively, is it basically 50 degree nights/70 degree days all that matters?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  2 года назад

      As long as they are acclimated to the outdoors... a couple inches tall.

    I planted red heirloom cherry variety supplied by Aerogarden in my unit indoors. The tomatoes are all fruited. Do I get any more after picking them? Also do I have to mist the leaves as the plant is indoor.

      If it is an indeterminate variety, yes. It keeps growing, flowering and producing.

    If I put either of the three determinate tiny tomatoes
    in a greenhouse, then will they keep growing tomatoes year round?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 года назад +1

      So no determinate, in general, get to size, set flowers and fruit and die back. In theory you could trim them back and they send up new growth slowly. Best to have some replacement transplants going behind them. The production of new seed determinates is so much better. You can also snip suckers, drop them in water and make clones

  • @pauloag8091

    I have been having issues with tiny tims caused by horrible Belgian weather this last month. June had 3 no rain days, and even hail a couple of days. Incredibly wet. Some areas of my plants, interior leaves and branches start having some kind of rot. I have been cutting out sick parts. Maybe I should have pruned the suckers like I do in normal plants, but I had the Idea that with these dwarf varieties we should just let them bush. Anyway this was my first try with dwarf tomatoe plants and for the rest they are remarkably easy to manage and I hope I still can get some fruits out of them. And next year I will surely grow them again. Regards

      Any antifungal sprays helps. I used just a low mix of baking soda. It sits nicely on the packed in interior leaves and helps a bit I think.

    Question about determinants, If you don't remove suckers don't you basically have an indeterminant since every sucker is a new determinant?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  8 лет назад

      They really slow production down after they set all their fruit. Technically they dont die off but take a long time to get buack going again. You can pinch a sucker and root it. And plant that. It will grow thinking it is brand new.

    • @scottj719
      @scottj719 8 лет назад

      When I grew Cosmonaut Volkov (again) this year I was surprised to see it was called a determininant by Territorial Seeds. I was thinking that possibly because I didn't sucker it as much as I should have it just kept growing last year. So you're saying that the main plant has some kind of regulator that tells it to shut down even though it may have 10 suckers on it that are junior versions of itself?

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN I just went through the website. While I agree that the quality of products is good , yet they are really expensive! We get a better variety here in India and at roughly half the price. I just wanted to know the exact name of that particular tomato cultivar. There are plenty of videos on RUclips showcasing "tiny tim tomato" but all those plants look very different from one another. Some are dense and bushy, some tall & spindly. So I was just confused.

      Yep. You can feed them with a half strength liquid feed like Miracle Gro. Dont use organics on the seedlings. Not worth it. You can the actually let them get to an inch or 2 in there and then transplant them. ruclips.net/video/0D0YjIPOe6g/видео.html
