Absolutely beautifully done. Just wonderful detailing. I have a 1987 500 C/M and now plan getting a 503 CW, I have located a CW which is a Millenium which is year 2000 but it costs 3800 dollars. Would prefer a 2012/13 standard CW. Bless you. Cyrus India
Hum from my experiences the floating mirror in the 503CW is longer because otherwise the top part of the image in the viewfinder will be cut off with longer lenses, especially when using extension tubes and bellows. The rest of the image is equally even on both cameras. The way that is works is that the longer mirror does not only flip, but also glides back a bit when the shutter is pressed. This also removes a bit of the mirror slap force and makes it slightly softer than on the 500C/M. Also the 503CW does support TTL by dialling in the ISO value on the side. This controls the flash.
Good comparison, one more information regarding 500cm vs 503 regarding the build quality, in the very late 500cm and all of 503cx and cw, the internal anti reflective coating was changed, 500cm uses uneven texture paint while 503 uses Matt foam/plastic material. This later plastic material ages easily and develop cracks and dust, this can be problematic for people who uses digital backs as dust and chips can get on the sensor. 500cm does not have the problem.
This is a great info. I do have a 500CM and it vignette badly when I use 135mm bellows lens and was planning to replace it with a 503CW. Does 501CM also has the same problem ??
I just discovered your channel, I enjoy the content provided, very clear explaination and it goes to the essential (and incredible shots). Keep it up !
I own a 1965 model 500ELM with a fixed 50mm lens. In England at that time purchase tax was 55% so on a 2500 pound camera you had to pay almost another 1300 in sales tax. The government edict was that if the camera was for professional use no tax was due. Hassleblad made a range of cameras with fixed lenses to avoid tax. Problem with the ELM was that it was totally motor drive and if the battery ran out rhe whole thing froze up and had to go to the shop to be fixed. Fabulous camera and a version of the ELM went to the moon and was used for all the moon pix.
I am shooting the 503 Cxi and I am seriously thinking about buying a 503 Cw body. I have four film backs a 50mm and 150mm lenses and a nice prism finder. Everything in mint condition but I want 2 cameras one for a backup and as an extra to loan to someone shooting with me. I love shooting this system and use my hand held Sekonic meter for great exposures.
Great video. Awesome images. Could you please mention if you've gotten any digital backs for the CW, and which one? Also, could you mention a reputable service that works on the CW? Thank you.
loved the video. would be great if you could do one in the future where you talk a little about the lenses available and their characters/rendering. i am shooting with the 500 cm at the moment and it have the 50fle, the old silver 80 and a 150 cf. like you said, this camera is a beast. cheers Marc
Hey, do you use a tripod or do you shoot handheld for the most part? i have struggled in the past with my 500CM (which im getting back again) getting blurred / not sharp images- great review!
Hi Travis. Thank you for the presentation. I am seriously considering the purchase of some form of Hasselblad. Most likely it will be a 500C or CM but I have seen references to the EL/M being quite affordable. Have you any experience with them? I presume the weak points would be the added weight and reliance on power for the film advance and shutter.
Truly your depth, feel and connect with the Blad are a pure at-one-ment. Your photographs were out-of-this-world. You shoot from the twin places that ultimately matter most your own Heart and mind’s inner Eye. I’m keen to get a very clean 500 CW possibly a latest 2012/13 with the standard 80mm Zeiss Planar. Can you help me find one? I live in India. God bless you, Cyrus
How's going, Travis! It's been awhile! I have been blessed to shoot with the Hasselblad 500 c/m. I have been wanting to know what the difference between the 500 c/m vs. 500cm? Good seeing you again on RUclips bro! I need to make a trip to Northern California! It's been too long being away!
Hi! I try to understand the difference between the 501 C(CM) and the 503CW. Can this shortly be explained to me, it would be great. Thanks. Regards Geir
hey, great video! I should have watched this before ordering my 503CX but whatever..quick question, where did you get that sweet t-shirt? I can't find it anywhere haha
Nice video. I'm trying to decide whether or not to invest $845.00 for a Hasselblad C on Ebay. I have three medium formats already, the Mamiya C33, Mamiya RZ67 Pro ll and the Bronica ETRS. I'm sort of a camera collector, I guess you could say and I'm longing to add the Hasselblad to the collection. I use them all along with my 35mm cameras, including the Leica M3. Would you purchase the C or go for the CM? You mentioned that the viewing glass isn't removable on the C and it is rather dark. Is that something serious to consider? Thanks for any advice you may render.
PS., up till 19:00 min. the shot is OVER exposed, all that silver is reflecting too much light!!, try exposure compensation, maybe 0.3-> 1 stop + side, OR use an ND filter on the lens :)))
Your 500 C/M made in (UR) 1978 & 503 C/W is (ER) 1998. A great site for Hassey history & info is Hasselblad Historical (www.hasselbladhistorical.eu/). You can date your Hassey gear w/their calculators. Just plug-in the 2 letters in your SN#s. You can find everything historical about Hasseys. A highly recommended Hassey repair shop that is owned by a Hassey factory trained repairman is David Odess in Maine (www.david-odess.com/repair.html). 1967 28 minute interview w/Victor Hasselblad (ruclips.net/video/s3BloulJ1iU/видео.html).
All jasselblad owners should know that the shutter, lens, most be mechanically syncronized.if you take the lens out wile the lends is in zinc ND fire it w o the lends ND take the back after you fire it ..you will get it stuck..so don't do it ! Now you need to release it from the pi. I side the dark box..lol
Two post up, "For the record after I made the video I pushed the mirror down and the camera completely un jammed. So now the camera is back together haha"
Not BARN DOORS, but AUXILLARY SHUTTER. ( the 500 C had a synchronisation at this second shutter). Do not forget to clean the A12 before putting a new film in. A Pro shade is named a COMPENDIUM; it is a must. You need it, to put all the CC, LBA, LBB, SP and ND filters in; about 60 different filters. At the front of the compendium the inserts for long focus optics are put in. Macro filters do not exist, it is a CLOSE UP lens. Filters and CU lenses are made by Zeiss of Schott glass. Mamiya C330 is no fun toy. Saying that, does not make you smart.
Hehehe now all the kids with money gonna rush to buy it & try to take few clicks of flowers in garden & doggies.. Hehehe of course that's gonna screw the prices for real photo enthusiasts
I've been a pro shooter for 32 years. Really enjoyed this video. Never shot a 'blad and learned a lot from this.

Thank you for sharing, i have a 500 c/m coming in this week. Up until now my favourite film camera was the mamiya c330f :)
Thanks for this video dude! Just bought a 503CW, so it was super informative.
This is the most helpful review video I’ve found

Wonderful, in depth Hasselblad informative video Travis.
Thank you for your time and energy.

Awesome thorough video. So did you ever find out what happened to the hasselblad that jammed?

Great video; you always do it well...keep doing it; I find it very inspirational and I often watch it more than once

Almost had me sold after it broke... Beautiful shots man...
For the record after I made the video I pushed the mirror down and the camera completely un jammed. So now the camera is back together haha

A pm-5 prism finder is a Nonmetered Prism I believe.
All "PME's are metered.
Really enjoyed your video. Well done.
I have a 503cxi. What flash would you recommend to take advantage of the TTL metering?
Thank you.
Congrats and thanks a lot. Just one question, where did you buy your Hasselblad t-shirt? Thanks a lot!
I love your videos - Thanks for making these.
hey, great video! I should have watched this before ordering my 503CX but whatever..quick question, where did you get that sweet t-shirt? I can't find it anywhere haha
I missed what was said about which focusing screen to get for the 500CM
Interesting review on a wonderful medium format camera system - have you ever considered Mamiya RB67 albeit a tank - excellent quality and fine glass
what's your take on the 2000FC?
Do you prefer Fuji GW690II over Hasselblad 503CW?

thanks for the video, i just want to know how to install winder for hasselblad 503cw step by step, i just got one winder, appreciate
are all of the back compatible? so could you put a 500 back onto a 503?
Yes all Hasselblad backs are forward and backwards compatible.
Thanks, useful info. CF or CFE for 500CM
+TheOriginalJoeBloggs The one you can afford. C, CB, CF, CFE, CFI, ... all compatible with your 500C/M.
Some useful information here, thanks. Not that I'm intending to buy one though.
PS., up till 19:00 min. the shot is OVER exposed, all that silver is reflecting too much light!!, try exposure compensation, maybe 0.3-> 1 stop + side, OR use an ND filter on the lens :)))

Two post up, "For the record after I made the video I pushed the mirror down and the camera completely un jammed. So now the camera is back together haha"
Thank you.
Fantastic review! pretty funny
Turn the screw that engages the lens (need a special tool for it)
what about the 501cm?
that's a good one to go with if you don't care about ttl flash.
Nice video unfortunate that your cm broke whilst filming :(
Thankfully it came un jammed but still isn't in working order
Good info. The vocal overlap and abrupt cut off is irritating.
T-Y Chia oh man these videos were filmed on my phone and definitely could be better I agree!
Nevertheless I enjoyed your intro. I am looking to buying my first Blad and Flex!
👏🏼👏🏻
nice hand rash. ;)
birutaishere that's my birthmark haha it's pretty odd but def not a rash.
ForesthillFilmLab hahaha I was kidding

Pro shade = matte box.
Very scary looking man!!!!!!
An expensive, wonky beast that requires 3 hands with 6 fingers on each hand to operate.
