    The duchess does have a male heir... which is why Ferdinand and the Cardinal were opposed to marry her off again. This prove that the relationship between Antonio and the Duchess was one of pure passion and emotions rather than one for an heir.

    And of course thanks for sharing this video with us.... it's also interesting to note that Elizabethans or Jacobean were exploring the continental stories rather than confining themselves to England.

      Accurate as far as it goes (I'm amused by the speakers pronunciation of "awry") but let's remember that one of Webster's main purposes was to show us blood-and-guts as in the final mass carve-up, which topples over into the ludicrous. Basically, much of the play is Grand Guignol, a shocker - so let's not get too solemn about it.

    • @Anonymous99816

      Well the obvious, she's a female that is constantly being controlled by men because of patriarchy. She is brave, just like Cariola, they both die at the hands of men

      @@FirstRateTutors How? How did she becomes the Duchess if her husband, the Duke had a child?

    • @Anonymous99816
      @Anonymous99816 Год назад +1

      @@Oscar-vv6dn When she married her first husband, she receives his title, meaning that their child is the heir to her fortune.
      The Cardinal and Ferdinand don't want the Duchess to marry again because they will lose their power over her, they are greedy, they only want the Duchess' heirs money and riches.
      She boldly defies them by marrying a poor man, and bringing Antonio up to her status, she is punished for marrying for love, which was deemed selfish in the Jacobethan era.

      - malfi born in time where women held very conversation tasks such as doing household work and being at home mothers and religious society that deems almost everything nowadays taboo and didn't have word in almost everything as well. No power as men
      -fact malfi had to hide her marriage from her brothers who were obviously classists and trying to not let her get married.
      - malfi was murdered and so are her children for being children of Antonio a man lower class and obviously cause she got married
