  • Halsey on Losing Herself to Find Herself Again. 2017
One of Halsey's key artistic traits is the candor that drives both her music and her relationship with her audience. Whether the subject is politics or romance, the singer behind "Ghost," "Colors" and "New Americana" always cuts to the chase, unearthing emotions that are often brushed aside by others. Her new 'hopeless fountain kingdom' album was written and recorded in the wake of a breakup, the "misadventure" of star-crossed lovers as she reveals in album's "Prologue." Halsey recently performed the songs for the first time ever at our Vevo Presents show in LA, and in our exclusive interview she sat down with Kim Taylor Bennett to elaborate on their origins, plot twists, and meanings. Along the way she explained how Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo + Juliet' helped her shape the narrative, how she crafted the traits of her lovers Luna and Solace, and how she had to come to grips with herself when her ex was no longer in the daily picture. Big questions and intriguing options sprouted immediately, and she tells Bennett all about them. "When I'm making a record, I want my fans to know the characters and know the story," she says. "It's kind of liberating, being so honest. Because it keeps me being honest with myself."
    Director: Evan Cohen
    Producer: Kim Taylor Bennett

Halsey is polarizing and misunderstood. People either love her or hate her. She keeps it real and if anything at all, you'll get an honest response or answer from her. That's why I'm a fan of her.

"You've been replaced, I'm face to face with someone new" I always thought she referring to another partner, but in reality she is referring to herself. To the person she has become after the break up, hopefully someone stronger. Halsey really is such an inspiration and her explaining the songs aren't about her lover, has completely changed my perspective on this album. I can't wait to listen to it again and re-evaluate it.

“woman of color” doesn’t just mean ur physical appearance, it refers to your ethnicity as well. she’s half black regardless of whether or not she’s white passing. she knows she’s white passing and acknowledges the privileges that come with it all the time, and she uses her privilege for good. but disregarding her race completely just because she’s white passing is ignorant in itself. she has the right to connect and embrace the other part of her race as well.

    • @breezy8854

I agree with you on some parts. but you need to know some history. white ppl with african blood were called 'free people of color' and they weren't enslaved. the other ppl were called colored ppl. but later on ppl found it offensive and changed it to' ppl of color'. it was purely based on one's color. but after the immigration of other races to us. they were also called the ppl of color regardless of their skin color for the representation of minorities. So countries like canada use 'Visible minority'. Also white ppl with african blood is more privileged than white ppl themselves. if you ever been to a college u'll understand it. halsey is only 25 % black. i'm 25 % european, 25 % african and 47 % indian what would you call me ? she can say she's biracial or. but never black or person of color.

Bre Ezy, no one gets to rob someone of their identity, just because the percentage isn’t perceived to be high enough to ‘count’.

    • @breezy8854
      @breezy8854 5 лет назад +5

No one is trying to rob anyone's identity my dear. the only issue here is she identified herself as POC which she is not. but she definitely has African roots in her DNA. She is just a white kid whose parents happen to be of white and half white races. also racists didn't and don't run a background check and DNA test on someone right before they start being racists. it was purely about the way they looked. If white is black i don't really understand the point of the term 'color' in 'Person of color'.

    • @SFrancoish

She was born in America and this country see any one who is born of mixed race as the minority mix. Jim Crow laws had the one drop law... This country hasn't evolved too much with the racial identity.

It's interesting when an artist talks about how the album was created, as it gives us the chance to follow your line of reasoning and thus understand the way the songs were created and how they will affect you. Hopeless Fountain Kingdom is an incredible album and the more I know the stories behind their songs, the more Halsey becomes incredible to me.

I asked my parents if I could go to one of her concerts, they said no “we don’t like the things that she talks about” she is describing what she went through. Yes, she talks about sex on the album but she is saying what she did to please them so that they would be happy. So that they wouldn’t criticize her. This is why Halsey is important, she describes what it is like to go through things and what she did to get out of them.

  • @rosieee3719

This is why we love her, you can always feel the authenticity in her, she doesn't hide or twist who is she in front of the world, she is just being herself and honestly if any one of you doesn't like that just because she's acting like a bitch or snake, you can definitely get the fuck out. Real fans understand her and will stay.

It's amazing how you can truly hear the inspiration behind her music like Eyes Closed being inspired by Abel (the Weeknd) and then her other songs being inspired by her own emotions and experiences like Bad at Love. I don't get caught up in what others say negatively about her because if I can find what matters to me in her music then that's all that matters overall. Others can say all the shit they want but they can't block the emotions Halsey puts out in her music and also the emotions I feel while experiencing her music. Much love and respect to Halsey ❤

This is the best Halsey interview I’ve seen so far. She is so much deeper than the public portrays her as. I’ve been a huge Gaga fan since the beginning, and I think she always had this issue as well. Until recently, she’s been taken seriously as an artist/activist. I feel it’ll be the same for Ashley. Someday the world will appreciate her and she will get the recognition she deserves as a person/activist and not just as an artist that is often misunderstood.

It's kind of like when you're watching a movie and the director doesn't give you enough expository background on the characters before something big happens in the movie. And then, all of sudden, there's like a big dramatic plot point and you're like 'I don't care about this because I don't KNOW these people"" - Halsey. YEEESSS. Hearing this was so relatable and knowing the kind of music she makes is a reason to keep going. Especially since I'm on this path of music too 😊

I love her,the first time I heard her song I thought" Jesus this girls walked into my head and into my soul and put into words what I couldn't". And i still feel this way.

Inspirational backstory!👍 I'm a new fan. An artist with DEPTH who's genuine and true to herself and whose voice (and emotions in her voice) are so raw ... Brilliant!

This interview with Ashley and talking about the growth that she has seen with herself and with fans really puts into perspective how much she really cares! That's my big sister who I love so much! She's so fucking down to Earth!

I love how the lyrics part: "you've been replaced, I'm face to face with someone new" got a whole new meaning for me when I realized that the album is, just like she said, about her not about him. So that new person she is facing is not a new lover, it's herself bc that's the person she lost and has now rediscovered. I just love her a lot.

why are people hating on this beautiful singer the haters just make Halsey look more beautiful than she is why would a hater click on a video that says Halsey in it when they don't like them? And then take there time to comment something terrible as hate and I took my time to comment on this video to tell the haters to stop it doesn't matter the race of someone or what sex they like to date. if you made it down here thanks for reading and if your a hater click off this video and leave people alone who are you to judge.... bye

I am amazed. My respect and love for Halsey continues to grow. She is such an inspiration. How grounded she is and how honest and raw she is, is truly a personal inspiration to me.
The part where she says the songs are about her and not about her ex is even more inspiring and empowering. Like wow. This woman is a voice to be reckoned with. And I am truly inspired to put more of myself and my own rawness and honesty in my own work.

I know from experience...A WOMAN HAS TO OWN HER POWER !!! Never let anyone tell u who u are.
Women are not put on this earth to please everyone and kiss @ss, F*** that. People will always take
advantage of u. They will let u down. So as long as u r strong enough to LOVE YOURSELF MORE than
anyone else can.... U got it taken care of. When I had to take care of myself and live on my own, being
alone every night,.. it has made me a better person. I was at the same place Halsey talks about in her life.
I find her very easy to understand. The person who doesn't.... obviously has not suffered enough...because
we grow from pain. And some of the best music ever written comes from that place
