Bears are a force of nature. A guy I know was out hunting, when a grizzly female saw him and charged at him right away. His luck was that he had just bought a Keltec KSG shotgun and he had taken it with him just to fool around… well, that Keltec saved his life, because he still had some slugs loaded in the second feeding tube, and when he saw the bear charging, he managed to switch the tubes and shoot the bear in the head point blank right as the bear was starting to maul him.
He says that it was really a split second thing, and he still doesn’t remember if the bear hit him as he was shooting, a moment before or after, yet he knew that it was a miracle for him to be alive.
What’s incredible is that, even after taking a slug to the face, the bear was STILL alive enough to try to run away about 10-15 feet, which means that most probably anything less than a slug would not have killed her… the guy was left with a couple of broken bones and some very noticeable, nasty scars on his face, left arm and chest (he said his jawbone and forearm bones were exposed), plus the feeling of having dodged death by the skin of his teeth.
Moral of the story: if you think you might meet hostile bears you better have some top tier artillery ready to use.

However, even if you survive the attack you still need to look for medical attention which will be really hard in the middle of nowhere. I say the only way to survive is if you have a gun ready and even then you can still end up dead. That is one of the things that park ranger investigate after a bear attack. If they killed you in self-defence they will leave the bear alone. But if it killed you to eat you they are euthanize.

If you ever encounter a bear, here are some tips.
Look at the color. If its black you have a chance. Black bear prefers to eat fruit over meat, and it is usually not very big. Your best bet is to fight back.
If the bear is brown, he eats both meat and fruit, also brown bears are too big for any man to fight back, so you should either stay still or lay down. You can try to scare him away and that will also work if you are in a group of people and bear is not too hungry.
If the bear is white you are out of luck. White bear eats meat for a living and he wont be scared even if you are in a group. Laying down or staying still wont help because he wants to eat you for your meat.

This only applies when the bear is physically attacking you.
Only use bear spray from a distance. At close range, it won't work and will provoke the bear.
