      I assume because its not renewed, same in humans, once the lens has grown and the shark reaches a certain age the lens will contain the same carbon until it dies and decomposes.

      This is basically similar to how they predict we will be after we finally come out with the anti-aging pill. The study I saw said even when such a pill is invented and we no longer die from old age, we will still be prone to diseases and accidents so on average we would at most live for around 9 thousand years before we either die from a freak accident or decide to off ourselves and most of that 9 thousand years will be spent carrying any number of diseases and debilitations we’ve accumulated throughout our lives.

    Female Greenland sharks potentially have a gestation period of 8 to 18 years (Wow!!!) and can give birth to 200- 700 pups during their lifetime! They are incredibly slow movers- their “top speed” is just a bit over 1.6 mph. A very interesting creature!

    I find it so amusing how most sharks have a lifespan of 20-30 years but Greenland sharks are out here living for centuries for no reason whatsoever

      Actually sharks have a great range of lifespan: Great Whait and Tiger can reach 60-70 years.
      I don't know about Leuca and Mako, but I'm pretty sure they can live more than 30 years.

      Big sharks usually can get very old. Some need to wait to reproduce for the first time for 30 years. You're probably only talking about the tiny shark species.

    fun fact: the oldest animal we have ever discovered was a clam that lived to be about 500 years old. the sad thing is that the scientists that checked how old it was killed it in the process

    Tbh, Greenland Sharks dont actually hunt
    Because of their slow metabolism (what allows to live for a hella of a long time) and slow moving
    They scavenge more than anything, rather than actually hunt. Fun fact: They can even scavenge food that are not from the water, like reindeers or maybe even human bodies

      I was curious too - more because of how dangerous the ocean is - how do they live so long? The answer: they’re WAY down deep, they’re in freezing cold water, and they don’t need as much food cuz they move super slow with super low metabolism.
