  • Wifeyworksalot and I went onto the myspace marketplace and found us a welding machine! We picked up a 2013 model Miller Trailblazer 325 EFI unit for a steal, or so we hope. The machine does not currently weld, one of the main functions that make it a welder i know, but hopefully it isn't a huge fix!

    • @JasonWorksAlot
      @JasonWorksAlot  3 года назад +1

      Nope. Machine sat at miller dealer for 10 months while they went through it. Couldn’t figure it out and I wasn’t really willing to take a gamble on replacing circuit boards at random. Picked up back up a couple months ago and really dug into it with burningdinosaurs, he’s some kind of an electrical engineer type person, we found both main capacitors were bad and the large resistor was bad. I ordered them. Put it all back in and when I went to start it the engine immediately choked down like it was under a heavy load. Turns out the welding generator went full bore and over voltage, one of the brand new capacitors exploded and I’ve basically left it since. Checked for any shorts or anything and got another set of capacitors or it but as soon as you start it, it does the same things. If you unhook the weld generator leads it runs fine. The ac generator still works fine. So I bought a big blue 400 pro a few months ago since I needed a machine and the trailblazer wasn’t looking good. Got a used one with 4K hours on it and haven’t look back. Will end up selling the trailblazer as a generator and try to recoup some of my loss on it.

    There's really slim choices for engine driven welders for requirements like mine. I needed a a good welder that also provided lots of generator power to run my plasma cutter and provide backup power to my house and shop. Lincoln Rangers and Miller Bob Cats are more for generating power but can weld OK. They are not considered great welders. At least not the Bobcat but I hear the Ranger is the same. Correct me if I'm wrong. Now there are very fine, big, heavy, expeeeeensive welders if you want to spend north of 22K and don't mind taking up half your truck bed with a 16000 pound machine. Lincoln SA 200, Lincoln Vantage, Miller Big Blue 400 or Pipe Pro. Even if I could afford those, which I can't, many such models offer very little in the way of power generation. Some only have one or two 115V outlets so they still wouldn't meet my needs. I went with the Trailblazer EFI for a few reasons. Small and light weight compared to the other options. Welds amazing. Had the EFI option (I hate carburetors). And also offered the excel power option. So while everyone else's machine is revving up just to use a grinder, mine gives me 2700 watts at idle. I have two double 115V outlets and one 50 amp 230V to run my Plasma Cutter or a second welder. Also, the welder actually has two separate generators. One for the welding power and one for the generator power. So I can be welding a joint and someone else can fire up my electric Air Compressor and Plasma cutter at the same time and my arc isn't effected. I hope I don't suffer the same fate as others with my machine. I will say, after 300 hrs, It's performed perfectly and has paid for itself probably 3 times over. And I just do this as a side job on the weekends. I have no loyalty or bias towards Miller. If mine died tomorrow I'd be open to other models and brands in the $8,000 to $10,000 range. They have to meet the requirements mentioned above though. I'm not aware of any that can do all I ask but I would appreciate any suggestions incase mine does bite the dust. I've had mine for 5 years now and it runs like a champ.

      Couldn’t agree more with you. I ended up selling this for parts and I bought a used big blue 400 pro. I got it for an unbelievable deal and it’s been amazing for me. Just chugs along, it’s quiet. Runs my suitcase 12vs with arc reach so I can control the machine from the suitcase and I’m hoping to find the regular arcreach controller used for a deal sometime too. Best of luck with you with the trailblazer!! I know many people with them who love them. And yes. No loyalty to Miller from me... anymore atleast.

  • @williamthomas9463

    Jason, this may be too late because I notice this video is 6 months old but, I had the exact same symptoms on a Ranger 305G that had 6800+ hrs. on it. Took it to the welder repair shop and was told it was a $1200+\- board. This welder helped me build my business and is considered a family member so, I said sure. The ol’ girl is worth that. Well guess what....., it also fried the $1400+- board down stream! Can’t return electrical parts. So, with labor, I ended up putting about $3200 into a 14 year old/almost 7000hour machine. I’m satisfied with the results but probably wouldn’t have done it if I’d known up front. Hope this helps.

    • @JasonWorksAlot
      @JasonWorksAlot  3 года назад

      Yes that’s what it looks like this will be as well. I haven’t heard back from the shop in months but honestly haven’t had time to care either we’ve been so busy. My plan is to just get it back and either sell it cutting my losses or keep it as a generator only. Too early to tell. But I think I’ve found an airpak to buy off a good friend to replace it so maybe it was a blessing in disguise 🙃

    I was getting 20 hours a tank out of my 325 EFI. At the same time the 250 bobcat and Ranger 305 were basically a tank of fuel a day. The Ranger never went more than 8 hours before running out. The EFI paid for itself in the first year!!

    • @JasonWorksAlot
      @JasonWorksAlot  3 года назад +1

      No kidding??? That’s really good to know. I think I’ve settled on a bobcat 200 airpak diesel. I’d really like to have the diesel and an airpak has become a must I’ve spoke to a lot of people that are doing or have done mobile work and they agree that 200amps is plenty for the odd jobs and farm work I’ll be doing with it. It runs the same Kubota diesel I have in my little bobcat skidsteer and I know I can get close to 30 hours out of a tank of fuel on that. (Just under 6 gallons) do you have any experience with them?

    • @overtheclouds9
      @overtheclouds9 3 года назад

      @@JasonWorksAlot you’ll love how quiet the diesel is. If you ever run really hot with stick you still will be fine. What’s the voltage rating? Even a .045 dual shield will run 28 V MAX! Without looking it up I. Bet it puts out 22-24V
      I would think it holds more than 6 gallons. Diesel is always a great investment for welder. Lots of low end torque for high output situations.

    • @overtheclouds9
      @overtheclouds9 3 года назад

      Ok, I’m new to your channel but looking at Miller’s website 7 gallons diesel fuel on the Bobcat is pretty impressive! The only thing I see is it is a high idle welder depending on the load.
      This is what I would do if it was me looking going with NEW first.
      I’d personally buy a Big Blue 400. and go with a $600 compressor from Home Depot if you have the room.
      Reason is your going to get a solid, robust more versatile welder with the Big Blue that at high idle is 1800 rpm vs. 3600. Plus the option of a new version wireless interface and block heater.
      If your using it for power it will be pretty quiet. Welding will be exceptional, and you have 400+ amps for CAG. I’d take that Big Blue on a pipeline job. In fact I used one for X-ray pipe welding. Very smooth power.! MSRP is only $750 more than the Bobcat diesel. The Bobcat Weights 618 and big blue is 993 LBS. It will last you the rest of your life. Built so much better.

    • @overtheclouds9
      @overtheclouds9 3 года назад

      If you look on Cyberweld and other online sites take that price to your local Airgas. I’ve had them match it for my 325 EFI. I’m sure they will work with you on price.

    • @JasonWorksAlot
      @JasonWorksAlot  4 года назад +1

      Crane & Rigging so far on mine it has a blown capacitor which is mounted on a board pretty much behind the dinse connectors the cap took out that circuit board it’s mounted to, the cap is 65$ the board is 1600$ and the reason it’s still sitting is that miller can’t tell us (me and the shop I took it to) if that will fix it or if the PC2 board is bad as well (board with the displays I show in the video 1650$) I’m not spending 3300$ on a welder that costs 5500 new. But I will say that if they can’t help me I’ll never buy another Miller welder as long as I live. I’m so sick of them as a company :(

      @@JasonWorksAlot That seems to be a common complaint. The electronics are not dependable and Miller's out of warranty pricing is incredibly high. Man With A Plan hey buddy how’s it going?
      Yes, there is. And I briefly gave it a go, no dice. I did some more research and called around some. Ended up making the decision to drop it off and get it looked at by a miller tech. Same welding shop I always use they’re good guys. Talked a lot to the guy and learned a lot too. Some of it I wish I didn’t learn but we’ll see. It comes down to being possibly one, or two, or both circuit boards in the machine. And they’re costing something around 1600 each. So I felt it better to leave it in their hands and they can call me when they know whah it is for sure. If it ends up being both boards I’m thinking I’ll just pick it up and keep it for a generator for now. Don’t hand that kind of Money to put into it at the moment. I can always run my Primeweld machine off if and stick weld with that if needed.
      I’ll have a video of if as a follow up as soon as I get it back. Hopefully it doesn’t take them too long

Plus labor. I don’t think it’s worth putting the money into at this point. It’s pretty used for sure after really looking it over. Hey bud. There’s many pcb repair companies that can fix those boards for a few hundred. Find a good repair place and send them both boards. I wouldn’t play their game and spend 3k on replacements. Or go to ebay and find a refurbished board. Then get yours repaired to have as a backup. PCB’s are easily diagnosed and repaired by trained pros. I have fixed them myself in years past if you see a broken trace or an obvious burned out transistor. You could have a bad contactor or capacitor, in which case they replace it and you’re good to go. Just my 2 cents.

    • @JasonWorksAlot
      @JasonWorksAlot  3 года назад

      M Russ appreciate it! I should probably do some kind of an update on it but I just don’t have the time. It’s actually still at the shop I brought it to. They found the welding capacitors popped but also took out a circuit bird they’re attached to, I haven’t seen the damage first hand. When I asked if that board will fix the machine for sure they said they couldn’t answer that without putting it in. There’s a possibility the board in the video, even though we determined it’s new with 3 hours on it, could also be bad. So long story short if I get a chance I’m going to go pick it up and probably call around to a few PCB repair services and get some estimates. I’m leaning towards just getting a new machine though. If I’m going to use it to make money I need it to be reliable. I also would like to have an airpak. Who knows though. I do appreciate your comment, it makes a lot of sense!

    • @JasonWorksAlot
      @JasonWorksAlot  4 года назад +2

      Amen to that. The way this things panning out they’re going to loose a customer. I took it to a shop that would finally work with me, and they’ve been great. One of the capacitors popped which took out a circuit board (1600$) and what we don’t know is if the PC2 board(one in question in this video) is bad or not. The guys at the shop followed miller’s troubleshooting to a T and it isn’t clear if PC2 is bad as well(1500$) so I’m stuck deciding if I want to spend the 1600 and hope PC2 is fine and the cap/board are the only issues or potentially have to spend 3100 (parts only btw) to have the thing working. I’m pretty upset by this, with how much this machine would cost new, to be almost at 50% of its value in let’s alone after 6 years of service (which I’m told it sat for 2 of them) is pretty sad. The bobcat series I’m told doesn’t have circuit boards and is much more reliable. Wish I knew that ahead of time. Wonder how them red machines work...🤔

Hopefully you can merge the two I’ve considered doing the same I know of an older bobcat with a blown diesel on it they don’t support the engine anymore maybe I could mate my kohler to it 🤔. Miller actually tests and reconditions the circuit boards if their new enough which This ones got 4 hours on it so that’s an option too. Though the board really doesn’t look like anything’s wrong with it. I’m not sure. I feel the same though when it’s fixed how much can I trust it?

      I recently picked up an older Bobcat with a blown Onan , 3800 hours on it for $400 , then I found a newer Trailblazer for $700 with a bad circuit board and burned out stator , like new Kohler, only has 210 hours on it , I mean really , a new Trailblazer with low hours like this , catastrophic failure?
      Millers dropping the ball.
      They have a notorious fuel pump problem as well.
      I haven't torn into them yet , hoping they have the same threaded output shaft , make one out of two , no circuit board.
      I figure 3800 hours on mostly hard parts is not a problem, new brushes , slip rings , bearings , about all I'd need to replace.
      To fix it , a new circuit board , $600 , new stator $1,500 , same situation you're in , double bind , not willing to risk the out of pocket to only have it fail when I need it the most , for another couple grand I could just buy a new one.
      I looked at the Bobcat, no circuit board , I decided then and there I would never buy a newer welder with the circuit board.
      Problem with buying the older models , Miller stops supplying replacement parts.
      If I could find a well maintained Lincoln Big Red , pipeliner , torpedo type trailered welder like my father or grandfather used to have , I'd snag on that , they were and still are bullet proof , still going.
      Check out the company that fixes circuit boards for less , they don't care what it's off of , sorry name escapes me , just send them your old one , they test , fix if needed , and send it back to you for a lot less.

    • @Aa-ls4kd
      @Aa-ls4kd 4 года назад

      Right.
      Seems to be a trend no matter what you buy these days.
      I recently bought an imported mag drill off EBay , cost me just under $400 , I already have a Milwaukee, but it has the Jacobs chuck , I needed one with a Weldon annular cutter chuck , I've bought imported power tools before , they all have the same problem , poorly greased bearings.
      I took this one apart and discovered an overly greased gear box with good grease , but when I pulled the bearing cover you can see the clear Vaseline type grease they used , I just knew it , I was not surprised.
      Actually this grease is more like a gelatin than grease , all crumbly , it was rattling and making noise like no tomorrow, I greased it with ProLong and now it's much quieter and smoother.
      Every dang imported drill and grinder I ever bought , mostly from Harbor Freight had bearings greased with this inferior grease.
      Eventually I'd like to replace the bearings for a better bearing , they skimped on the balls.
      I knew what I was buying , but now I'll make improvements and make it last a long time.
      Bearings , switches and brushes are the most common weak spots with imported power tools.
      If you're not using annular cutters yet , do yourself a solid.
