    I had always perceived most defectors were poor is because the books which I had read are authors who came from poor families. Thank you for shedding some light ono the matter

    • @fh2135

      Maybe during the 90’s when they had famine, but now I would imagine rich people and people with specialized skills are much more likely to defect since their standard of living would improve more drastically and they have the means to defect. It would be more challenging for a poor person to defect and even if they made it, their overall standard of living would only be marginally better.

      @Dawn Afton
      How could you possibly know if there’s a famine there right now? The only information about life on the inside either comes from defectors(which can be a bit shady) and foreigners who’ve worked there(which is also unreliable since they are mostly in Pyongyang)

    • @krollpeter

      You need to bribe people if you want to defect. If you slam $ 2000 onto the table you can literally walk straight through the DMZ. For $ 100 or 150 the soldier at the Yalu river won't see you. For a few hundred $ someone will bring you straight through China. If you have nothing you may either end up being shot, or for a women, being sold.
      If you are not shot but caught, you family can still pay to reduce your punishment, or prevent you being raped or beaten up every day.
      May be the prices are being somewhat outdated by now.

      They are not from poor families. They are from average North Korean families. Which is yes, very very poor. But of course, for more rich person it's much easier to defect

    Why is there prejudice from South Koreans against North Koreans. Both are brothers and sisters who have been separated by border, war and conflict. They are basically the same except one has better rights, freedom and access to things while the other works everyday and gets little to no food and has the worst human rights in the world. Hope the Korean people can unite and take down the Kim Regime.

    I’m from Texas and I lived in France for 2 years. A lot of French people asked me, “What’s the name of your horse?” They would also ask me, “How many guns do you have?” A lot of them would just assume that I had any of these things. My answer was, and 20 years later still is, “I don’t have a horse nor own a gun.”

      That's just annoying stereotypes, like other people thinking the French just wear berets and eat baguettes and frog legs all day. I get that it's similar in the way that different cultures are curious about other people, but it's also completely different for Koreans.

      And then the thought of being asked which team you're rooting for... DPRK vs S. Korea etc... Like that isn't an insinuation you're not one of us? You can move to my country and still root for teams from your motherland? I'm not going to think differently of a Canadian-American when they root for Canada during Olympic Hockey.
