NOTE : -
I've had so many questions asking if I fixed the high speed power loss issue.
During the trip provided I kept my speed below 65mph the bike was fine, so I tried to use smaller road and therefore slower speeds.
I was also scared if I tried to fix the issue I would waste half a day on the roadside, and perhaps make the issue worse.
Basically I could live with a slow top speed, its my riding style.
I still haven’t fixed the high speed power loss issue,
2020 and the Covid pandemic restrictions meant the Old Zed had very little use, simply short local low speed Sunday afternoon trips.
When Covid restrictions are lifted I’ll fix the issue ☺
Refreshing to see an adventure that is not on an overpacked GS riding paved roads ;-)
Waiting for your Iceland adventure!
Thanks 👍
Yes I've avoided the classic GS Adventure Bike route,
still had a great time and saved lots of money 😎
@@IanT-J Did you eventually fix your power problem?
@@WimDH No - Still not fixed the power problem.
It's only at high speed motorway overtaking and I'm a slow back road kind of guy !
In 2020 with the pandemic I've really haven't use the old Zed very much. Hopefully 2021 we will be allowed to travel 😎
Excellent.
You probably dont care at all but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account..?
I stupidly forgot my login password. I love any tips you can give me
Oh, wedding was at Willa Wolax. Nice place. Been there many times and I live about ten miles from it. Just deepr in to archipelago.
Hi Petri
I would have liked to explore the archipelago a little more it looked a lovely place 👍

Fantastic video !
I rode my 77 CB750 from Michigan to California on Route 66.
A few repairs were required, two new chains, new rear tire, an ignition coil, what a thrill !

I have to agree Marco 😁
That was an amaising trip with an old bike i like it wery mutch you are a brave man from an old finnish motorcyklist.
Thank you "old Finnish motorcyclist" for your kind comment 👍
Wow, what a trip, fantastic.

Ten Ent Thank you Sir 🍺
really enjoyed that 50 minutes of vicarious living. Greetings from Dublin.
WOW - You sir have taught me a new word 😀
I had to ask google for a dictionary meaning 😎
“Vicarious - experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person.”
Thank you Scannan 👍
@@IanT-J 🤣first off I do much too much vicarious living as it is....except for next week when I travel to Finland (by air) to spend 4-5 days travelling around the Lake District on a borrowed Harley...living the dream eh?

I've had several z650 over the years
They are a great bike often overlooked. The Suzuki GS 550
Is also another bullet proof japanese
offering.
Your right Bob and these old 550cc/650cc are still appropriate for modern traffic 😁
Superb. Even the wife watched it (possibly because she just bought a Kawasaki z650 as well)! :-D As a Swede, I love seeing what others get up to when coming over to the Nordics. As for the roadblock in Stockholm, they usually cut of all traffic and then come down the other way to assist instead of waiting for the traffic to split in these areas. Some rescue workers have been severely injured and killed in the past by cars that speed past or are looking at the accident and not the road, so they are really strict now when incidents happen.
I hope your wife enjoys her Z650, they are great bikes 😎
Greetings from Bulgaria! Great video! It makes me feel free. I ride Kawa' too, but Vulcan. Thank you for the inspiration
Thanks XaH
Riding motorbikes make me feel 👍
Enjoy your Vulcan 😁
Oh my God, those are some ancient motorcycles. I love the old UJM look. Had an H1D for a while around 1980.
PS: Tom's wife has a very well-behaved bike and some long-ass legs. 😍
PPS: A neighbor of mine who ran his own repair shop had a KZ900. When a buddy of his bought a KZ1000, my neighbor couldn't let that stand, so he got himself a KZ1000 LTD. 😄
Would you believe I've only in 2021 become aware of the phrase "UJM- Universal Japanese Motorcycle". I believe is an American term that is less used in the UK.
Long live old motorcycles my friend 😎
@@IanT-J Ha ha. I didn't even know what the model name of my bike was when I had it (I was a clueless 19yo 🙄). Thanks for making the video. It's a nice break from all the alien rockets they have these days. 🙂

Great video thank you for sharing. I sure hope you will come to Iceland this summer, and it will be a pleasure to show you around the unbeaten tracks if you so desire.
Thanks Artic Braga for your very kind invitation,
I would love to join you and ride the unbeaten tracks 😁 👍
Iceland is at the top of my bucket list of travel destinations, Covid restrictions will decide if I'm to visit this summer or another year.
@@IanT-J You are welcome, current Covid restrictions are 5 days of quarantine that apply to all that are NOT vaccinated, only PRC swap at entry point if you are vaccinated and you will get the result in hours. Watching the second time around (planning my own Covid-friendly Norway trip this summer). It's great to see someone on an old bike dealing with all the "Zen and the Art ..." stuff. Relaxed attitude, great humor. Thanks for the story.

Another great video proofing that you really don't need a top modern bike to enjoy a motorcycle adventure! What a fantastic journey must have been, thank you very much for sharing it!! 👍👍
Thanks Nelio
We both know it's not the bike or the kit that makes the adventure, a night camping in a field 10 miles from home can be an adventure 👍

Thank you for taking us with you on this Trip! Fantastic film!
If you get the opportunity you definetely should visit the baltic states! I've been there 2 times already, and in Summer '21 -god willing- will be the third. This time me and my mate will go on our small classic bikes: Honda CG 125 & Yamaha RS 100.

Do you sync ignitiontiming on the two contact points ?
Set contact point #1 to 0.4mm. Set your timing. Move strobe to cyl 2-3 and set gap on contact point #2 to same ignition point as 1-4. after that, sync your carbs and it will run like a charm on idle.
Thanks Klyddmeisters, I think the video might include a little footage of both timing and and carb synchronisation. 👍
Wonderful video I really enjoy the principle of adventuring more with less . Keep up the great work

I enjoyed that Ian. I was planning to go to Scandinavia 2018 but, sadly, a family bereavement put the kibosh on that trip. Depending on the situation I may go later this year or possibly in 2022. Your trip has whet my appetite again. 😁
I loved my z650 (a ‘78 C3), definitely one I’d have liked to keep hold of. Nice to see one getting used rather than being garaged as an investment 👍
Hi Jim
So sorry to hear about your bereavement.
I hope your able to complete your Scandinavia trip in 2022 when hopefully all the current restrictions are lifted and life returns to normal. 😁
As you can see I loved the Nordic countries and that fact that everyone speaks perfect English makes the trip so much easier. 👍
I would still watch if you had used a new Z900 rs and done the windshield and luggage the same way. Basically you could do the same thing. 👍 Great riding and sites.

Hey Jorma....................offcourse he liked Finland. His brother lives there LOL. But I think he liked Sweden the most because he got logging there from that Swedish guy who wanted to share his material things with him. Beautiful bikes. I'm in the U.S., and have a 1976 KZ (that's pronounced KAY-ZEE) 900, more commonly known as the ZEE 1. Mine has the original stock exhaust. There are parts for these bikes, including a non vacuum petcock. However, you can use the vacuum petcock by connecting the vacuum hose from it to one of the fittings that you use to synchronize the carburetors. Just make sure there are no leaks. I suggest joining www.kzrider.com/ if you are not already a member. These old carbureted, points ignition NON COMPUTERIZED bikes deserve to be kept on the road. They will still be running when new bikes and their computers have crapped out.
Many thanks Gerald
Congratulations - You have won the award for the most informative comment on this video so far 🎉

Like David Firth, I was thinking "it's the vacumn tap" - you didn't answer him - was it?
Did you replace it when you were back home?
Did you ask the Danish Z club if they knew where to get one?
I bet they would have loved the challenge to help fix the niggle.
Hi Andy - I sure the problem was the aftermarket fuel tap, I still haven't replaced it I believe I need a Pingle tap with an adapter plate, but am sure someone will advise me 👍
@@IanT-J I've had similar Z650 issues, but found that it was the routing of the fuel pipe from the tap to the T-piece (also once had fuel starvation from a sweet wrapper stuck to the filter in the tank side of the petcock, and also once had over-rich main jets cause bogging at high speed).
Normally only ever use prime to prime the carbs if the bike has been standing a long time.
Toby B Thanks for the advice Toby, I’ll look at the fuel line routing.
I’m wondering how long it took you to discover the sweet wrapper in the fuel tank 😫

Great video. I'm itching to see Norway again :)
Hi Space Cowboy
I only saw a very small corner of Norway, I to I'm itching to return to Norway and explore more 👍
Even though I'm Swedish I just hope you drove via Norway back because Norway is by ALL visitors considered to be one of the most scenic countries in the world! The past five years I have ridden three times a year to Norway since I just love the nature ❤️ You have to go a couple of hours north from Oslo before the amazing sceneries with mountains, turquoise lakes, fjords and waterfalls will begin!
Unfortunately I only spent 1 day in Norway, I visited the Viking Centre and have a little footage in the video.
I love Scandinavia and 100% want to do an extended tour of Norway.
Keep enjoying your trips to Norway my friend :)
Hay a little late and I am sure you have this fixed by now. But that fuel petcock with the vacuum diaphragm, is just a automatic fuel shut off. Any vacuum source and it opens fuel to "Run" or "Res". The "PRI" just lets fuel through to get started. So I'm sure you got rust sediment into your float bowls and Main jets.
I'm a owner of 650B1 - 750E2. These are wonderful bikes, still wish I had my 1981 750E2. I had modified it with tapered roller bearings on the steering and Needle bearings for swing arm W grease fittings drilled & tapped on swingarm. I had the head put on a flow bench and had the bike tuned. For Removed the 34mm-CV carbs and replaced with 29mm manual slide carbs from a 900Z1. Keeping the stock airbox W K&N. The stock airbox flows better wit the stock rubber manifolds that have velocity stacks original. Kept the stock exhaust. The bike was tuned as a street sleeper by our Kawasaki shop I worked at. The shop had some Super-Stock drag bikes and the race guys helped me tune it on the flow-bench, degreed the valve timing etc. Anyway it looked stock and surprised lots of other riders on our rides. **Enjoyed watching your trip and am a little jealous!** Thanks.

Hi, I had a 1980 z650 F4. It had the z750 bottom end, but it had the 650 cylinder block, pistons + rings, head, cams and carbs. Kawasaki wanted to kill off the z650 but it was still popular for about another 5 years.
It also had a vacuum petcock and it connected via vacuum hose from the petcock vacuum port to cylinder #1 vacuum point for carb syncing. Hope that helps.
For interest: My KLR650 also has a vacuum petcock but it has 3 positions: 1- Off; 2-Main; 3-Reserve. No Prime position.
Thanks Dave
I'm interested in the Z650 with a Z750 bottom end, did you put the Z750 bottom end on it ? What are the advantages ? Tell me more 👍

Your European Adventure sounds great 😎
These are the memories that we will revisit for years and smile every time we think of them 😁😁😁
Whoa.......A B1 model, spoked wheels and all Fond memories, super straightforward bike to service, bulletproof engine, and for the time damm good handling and comfort. You can get a 1982 plus model with cast wheels, electronic ignition, better brakes, etc?
A Z650 should not 'lose power' over 65mph?! It's actually dangerous for motorway riding to not have that overtake ability to whisk you to 75 mph when required. Mine could cruise all day at 80mplus, the top end was around 115 plus. However, I'm sure you're well aware of it's usual performance. I would have tried to fix it, no ifs or buts, and surprised non of the Danish owners you met could have helped?
Whoa...checkout Tom's Missus stunning Z900! They now go for a cool £17k plus.

Great trip, Idid a trip to the alps a few years back on a BMW F650GS. I no longer have that bike, I do have a 1975 Kawasaki Z1B and after watching your excellent trip quite fancy doing something similar to your adventure. Thanks for the inspiration👍
Hi Jon
Good bike choices F650GS and Z1B 😁
Why not take your old Zed on a road trip ?
It would be great fun.
Please ensure you have good breakdown cover with a repatriation facility just in case 😎
Great, great video! BMW 1250 GS, KTM 1250, Africa 1100... No, I'm going on a 3000km journey with my motorcycle from 1977! :D
And, I'm sure I had more fun on a 1977 motorcycle, it's more of a challenge, you never know when it will break down :)
Did you identify and rectify your fuel problem ?.
Great bikes tho them Z650 's ....I used to own a 1976 model , funnily enough I had to replace the coils one year just before an IOM trip to the TT.
Ran ok up to a certain revs then had an intermittent spark , still got the old coils in my garage !.
Great vid still watching it !.
Interesting to hear about your Z650 experiences.
I'm sure a new set of coils would help mine as well 👍
Have fun Ian
First time watching your channel......very interesting but in my view spoilt a bit by much of the ‘soundtrack’. However I will continue watching!! Ride safe......
Hi Neil, thanks for your comment, I'll reflect upon the soundtrack 👍
