RAPIDO 60 TRIMARAN, WORLDS FASTEST CRUISING MULTIHULL

  • This was a very interesting project, On my way back from Vietnam, I dropped into Batam Island off the coast of Sumatra, to film a friends brand new amazing carbon fibre yacht he had just built. Literally a week or two old. TALK ABOUT FAST ! Stable and so easy to sail ! It's very much the cruising boat of the future,
I didn't have all my normal crew or cameras with me and decided to shoot this on a tiny SONY A7s, which was pretty much useless when shooting from a dingy in rough water. I asked my son to purchase a little DJI OSMO for a bit of fun and to bring it up with him (which ended being a life saver) And we also we asked a DJI drone crew to come in from Jakarta to help out as well. The stability results from these little DJI cameras were outstanding !
The RAPIDO TRIMARAN people were more than happy with the end result. :) And me being a very fussy camera nerd... was blown away ! Will these little toy cameras replace my RED CAMERAS... No. But I have to say, they were the perfect tools for this project.

A 60’ Rapido’s centre hull has similar living space to an old Cole style 45’ monohull (they’re a pilot house design just slightly smaller) In good weather the tramps actually give you more usable room than the Outremer cat they currently have, if they were shifting from a 36’ mono it’d be a huge upgrade it just depends which end you’re coming from and no, a tri is not a mono with outriggers or a cat with an extra float, they work on lack of weight (only one amas is in the water at a time for that reason) I have a 31’ Farrier aft berth trimaran, the aft berth and V berth are claustrophobic and only good for kids (I sail solo and sleep in the main section) it’s has roughly the same living area inside as a 25’ Endevour but it’s not designed or meant to be anything but a weekend coastal cruiser mainly because it won’t carry the weight of provisions, for myself I go away for up to three months at a time, would I live full time in it! NO! But it’s fast, it’ll sail at 25 knots and has seen 30 knots (by mistake as it’s pushing the limits to pitch pole: a 40’ Rapido would be perfect for solo or a couple just not for two blokes unless or course you like men... having said all this, I don’t see an issue with three adults (Elayna and the nanny lol, I’ve wondered about that, they’ve changed from being the sailing Aussie battlers who manage to put together some good video’s to having some luck with the deal with Outremer and being the most watched sailing chanel and now to this, I can see them loosing a lot of patrions, I hope not but yeah) and two kids living full time on the 60’er just people see the cat with all of the usable space in bad weather and compare it when they should just look at the Rapido for what it is... I hope they go as planned, they didn’t sail the cat for very long, not when you consider that most of us wouldn’t have half of it paid for by now, the Rapido might be the same, sail it for a few years the retire it to rent a boat then maybe a huge steel mono to go smashing up some icebergs.

I absolutely love this boat, having once owned a 45ft all-wood trimaran myself back in the late 1970s. The only thing that I keep going back to here is the Rapido's helm position which, to me, seems ludicrously exposed for a cruising vessel of this size. I guess the La Vagabonde crew might not mind that too much since they are used to their Outremer performance cat 's strangely exposed and uncomfortable-looking helm position already. Of course it's all a matter of personal preferences, anyway and ultimately I think the Rapido's overall appeal, as far as Riley is concerned, is its speed. Riley is well known for his belief in the value of speed as a crucial safety factor in the life of an ocean sailor, and the Rapido will give him that in spades!

It seems I am not the only one that has developed ambigous feelings about the Rapido 60.
When I first saw "her" I was in love at first sight, but studying "her" a little closer "her" flaws becomes .. visible - at least if you want a boat for circumnavigation and being a comfortable home.
The helm is just the first obvious flaw you see, I can't see the La Vagabonde family being comfortable there - and I wouldn't be either.
A kitchen table made of carbon fiber is impressive and looks gorgeous in the harbor, but when there is no place to secure your cutting board while sailing, it is better with a table made of a proper plank.
And an induction cooker ??, on a sailboat - a sailing machine where you have to start your generator every time you have to cook ??
Then there is the engine and energy production - why is this boat not equipped with electric motors, yes two electric motors, with regeneration and a large battery instead of a large light machine (generator)?. And the usual diesel Yanmar - both for redundancy and in case of longer "motor runs"
100-150KWh battery weighs between 1000 and 1200 Kg, but then perhaps it would also be reasonable with the induction cooker.
I'm afraid that if I were to place an order for a Rapido 60 I would ask for so many design changes that they would refuse to deliver - such a shame

Doesn't wear and tear depend on what kind of loads it is going to be subjected to? This is a very light boat. Doesn't light weight reduce wear and tear? And compared to many (if not all) cats - doesn't a tri like this have several aspects that also reduce wear and tear?

    • @angela1984a

@@georgedoolittle7574 it can not go faster then the wind because it has an engine, it can do it using the sails for propulsion as many other fast boats as it uses the apparent wind, the result of the boat speed and the real wind combined, to achieve speed higher then the one of the real wind. Further on you can not trailer a single 60 ft long boat, does not matter if it is mono or multi hull, and you surely can dock and anchor it. If you don't have any clue of the matter you are commenting it is probably better to refrain at all to comment. Best regards.

    • @gerritgovaerts8443

Because they are a lot lighter as stability is provided by those "wings" and thus a heavy (around 40% of the weight of a mono hull) keel is not necessary . Displacing a lot less water means they have a lot less friction . Also , they have very fine hulls that are not subjected to max hull speed

Okay, pro-race design, but I'm watching the math swirl as it goes, and I know it's already optimized for its layout, but I wanna...
Keep the same beam but increase length by 50%, add a third set of cross-arms.
Add another mast to use the extra length, or put in wind turbines, add solar panel all possible surfaces for the battery packs, for 2x electric motors. Preferably all of those.
Shorten the masts by a third but junk-rig the sails, because more zoom less top-heel.
Real deck between the arms (so 4), bunk/desk/head in each, so more public space in main hull.
Waterline access on back of outriggers like main hull has, 'cause more fishing.
Then, if it doesn't tear itself apart from all that force, it should still go like a bat outta hell and be totally livable and stable with room to spare, and get where it wants regardless of wind, and still draw almost nothing compared to similar living-space monohull yachts.
I think people lose some of the overall trimaran advantage by making the waterline proportionally too short, and on big ones they don't make good use of those gaps.

Let me remind you that: velocity in knots = 1.35 x the square root of the waterline length in feet. So the theoretical speed limit for a 53 foot boat is 10.8 Kts. Any time it moves faster than that, means it is plaining. Is that safe for a family? What about the danger of pitch poling? Perhaps that can be avoided by "under rigging" the boat? Reily is very skilled, but with inexperienced folk that can get on the helm, who knows what will happen.

    • @gerritgovaerts8443
      @gerritgovaerts8443 11 месяцев назад +2

Hull speed becomes totally irrelevant when the hull lenght to beam ratio becomes greater than 10 . At that point wave drag (the source of max hull speed) falls of a cliff , at 12 wave drag is mostly eliminated and disappears completely at 20 . So no , if you have very fine hulls (under the waterline) , you don't have to worry about max hull speed and you do't need to plane .
