I just did the Fiora Riki heart to heart in Colony 6, and Riki mentioned that he loves Makna Forest because he can hear the whispers of the trees/forest speaking to him. Could be referring to the wind, or could be him hearing spirits of the forest. Thought it was interesting.
In a tree in a forest there lived a Nopon. Not a slimy, dirty, old tree with arachnos living in it, nor a rotting, dry, crusty tree with no space to lie in it. But a Nopon Tree, and that means comfort.
I absolutely LOVED the scene where Riki comforted Melia by telling her that he could hear Kalian before he left. I think Riki could hear these voices is because he is an Ether user, albeit not as extensively as much as Melia. This could be easily explained if we think of these ghost entities as Ether particles in the surroundings, which Melia and Riki are especially sensitive to. This also explains why Riki could only hear while Melia could see her brother.
If I had to guess a possible explanation, it would probably just come down to Ether in some way. Riki has the highest Ether stat of the party who doesn't have a Monado or is a High Entia, so it's possible that he just naturally has a higher than average sensitivity to Ether or something.

Touching on your note about "Mummypon" and "Daddypon" It's certainly a possibility that the Nopon use those when referring to races other than themselves. Those are the only instances when "Mamapon" and "Dadapon" aren't used, so I think that might be what it is.
Even if he had been born at that point, why are you taking a child to an extremely dangerous environment? What could possibly go wrong, one of the multilpe superbosses in the area could find them, he could freeze to death, he could get shot into the stratosphere by the ice physics? That entire point is one thing I never got. edit: I didn't really bother to look at the facts because it makes no sense either way, but no he wasn't born during the expedition. He's 18 at the time of the game, and the expedition was 14 years ago, so he would've been around 4.

I think the best explanation for him being born during the time is that the expedition was a search for the monado, meaning they didn't know where it was, so they had to look through every part of the bionis thouroughly, which definitely sounds like it could take years and actually that makes slightly more sense that they would bring a child along now that I think about it that way.

I mean think about it, they were gone for years and likely missed their home a lot, and when they finally find what they were looking for for all this time, the fruit of their hard work... They immediately get killed. It gets even sadder when you realize that from the way Reyn was talking about Shulk's parents, they clearly weren't from Colony 9, and likely weren't from Colony 6 either, from the lack of any familiar feelings from the people that lived there, which means their homes got destroyed either while the expedition was happening, or after the group died. So there's no one anymore that would know the people of the expedition. Families, friends, gone from existence.
Adam Smith has a point, Shulk was likely born during the exploration, and 4 years later the Monado was found, so it's possible they took like, 6 years to find it, and Shulk's parents did the deed at the end of the first year or so, giving the pregnancy time, and birthing and aging It's an odd concept, but the more time you add pre-Shulk concieving, the more it makes sense
Nopons do seem to have some strange powers unique to one pon, so maybe it's something with that You have Dunga with prophecies, the Sage with his plant stuff, the Archsage and Halfsage being able to manipulate time/space, why couldn't Riki be able to hear voices within the Ether or something like that?
I never noticed how Riki could hear ghosts. I wonder if this ability was ever meant to have more of a presence in the game and it was scrapped or if it was always sort of a hidden ability.
@@Felixr2 Well Pyra and Mythra already established that a core can have múltiple personalities, it is posible that Alvis wasn't lying about the line of seers thing, the Nopon have their own seer, it is actually weird that The High Entia and Nopon have a tradition of seers, but not the Homs.
My personal theory is it means riki will some day take over as village seer. We dont know if the current seer still has any power or if he's just winging it "on instinct" but "seer" and a prayer hut implies there is supposed to be an actual power there. Lets not forget too that ghosts are an actual thing in the xeno games. Amalthus sees his mother for a moment when dying, jin is seemingly haunted by lora, there's the testaments in saga. Perhaps some nopon, albeit very rarely, are just tuned into the ether just right to be able to hear the spirits within it

I completely believe that Nopon are higher level beings. Hearing ghosts, living for 1000+ years appearing in every single Xenoblade game without fail, and we've never seen far aged nopon beside Chief Dunga and Tora's family
