    Episode 349 of Love At First Scent
    This was a RUclips Live broadcast streamed on Friday 10th March 2023. Unscripted. Unedited. Unrehearsed.
    In this episode, I interviewed Michael Edwards, founder of Fragrances Of The World, whose work has had a profound and lasting impact on the perfume industry. We discussed the recent creation of WikiParfum, the growth of the niche sector since the 1970s, the writing of his upcoming book, American Legends, and his concerns about the future of perfumery. He even revealed the identity of his favourite perfumer of all time.

    Went immediately to investigate Amouage Gold Woman. Came across a sentiment in a review that made me laugh out loud: "Gold Woman is the ne plus ultra aldehydic floral. Basically, it makes Chanel No.5 look like a street urchin who chews with her mouth open". Good, eh? (Now Smell This 2012)

    What an absolute treat! Thank you both! What was so surprising and refreshing is Michael’s positivity about the present state of perfumery and perspectives on the niche market. Nice to hear someone with his breadth of experience say that things haven’t changed as much as many others say it has. Loved the last part on perfume being playful and experimental, not so corporate 💙

    Thank you very much for this interview! It was highly informative and thought provoking.
    Ever since I have been confronted with the term "niche", which, of course, happened here on the internet, I have struggled with understanding what was really meant by it. Mr. Edwards definition of niche makes a lot of sense, however we are all observing the phenomenone of houses that allegedly started as so called niche houses and are by now developping in a similar direction, if not the same, as the so called designer houses. Also, there is a section of so called niche brands which totally does not fit that exact description, as they behave much more like the so called designer houses by launching very low quality perfumes and charging rather unfortunately high prices for them, benefitting from the image the niche world has established for "itself" over the last two decades. I personally don't enjoy the manifold spread idea either that anything niche is necessarily "better"(whatever that means) than anything made by a designer house. And I outspokenly don't like when representatives of niche houses go ahead and accuse huge traditional houses of their behaviour, specially when it is noticeable that some very few particularly successful brands are being the target. And when few people who are all located in a very particular area of the niche world target one particular design house. I would certainly wish that the perfume world functioned much more as a whole, and with the due amount of respect for one another. There is a huge world out there with probably billions of people who want perfume in their lives and we should be glad that the industry is able nowadays to satisfy that need. It is just natural that big, well known brands have diversified their offer in order to cover all aspects of the market, while usually maintaining a high quality classical line anyone in love with high end materials and perfumery has access to.
    The one thing I do not agree with personally is that artists under pressure are able to produce the same high quality as the ones who worked in eras which allowed them to have time as a valid resource and not only as a cost factor. The same phenomenon can be observed all over the world of arts nowadays, and I am not saying there are no good artworks or perfumes being produced at all! But the general landscape has become less interesting and nuanced as artists are being chosen for their capacity of resisting pressure and coping with a whole lot of restrictions, as opposed to their artistic sensitivity. Capitalist mindsets and the arts don't necessarily seem to go very well together.

    • @Persolaise
      @Persolaise  Год назад +1

      Thanks for this. I have yet to come across a truly 'perfect' definition of 'niche', which is why I don't find the word all that helpful. But I get what Michael means when he uses it.

    • @L-Ondee
      @L-Ondee Год назад +1

      @@Persolaise I totally understand! I have even come to the conclusion that niche does not exist at all. It is the natural appearance of new perfume houses (more or less inspired by whatever they choose). And those houses like to position themselves as something special within the world of perfume and hence try to distinguish their brands from pre existing ones. That would also explain their sometimes aggressive attitude towards established companies.
      And I regularly get completely confused about the issue and feel overwhelmed in the intent of understanding what people mean when speaking about it.
      Btw I have never understood either why traditional perfume brands (old companies which exclusively dedicate all their efforts, including research etc, to making perfume) are categorized one way or another. They are Perfumers (as in "parfumeurs") in my opinion, and hold a special place in my heart and mind!

    • @sachetdemel
      @sachetdemel Год назад +1

      @@L-Ondee There is a rather simple explanation, dear L'Ondée: Americans love categorization, and putting a label on everything. And nowadays, as you know very well, this whole market is sadly cornered rather by them.
