@@stain4704 Paul formed the band several years before the sex pistols. Watch any documentary about them and you find out some actual facts and not a load of made up rubbish. They were around at the same time but they took very little inspiration from the Sex Pistols because the Jams music has a lot more creativity in the lyrics than in any "Punk" songs
The Jam were never accepted by the London punks. The London punks looked down their art school noses at The Jam because The Jam were from Woking a working class industrial town on the edge of London. Kind of how New Yorkers look down on people from New Jersey. Anyway I love The Jam and Paul Weller. The formal style of clothing you mentioned is called Mod and this style was very popular with working class kids in the 60's. Vespa scooters and clothing brands like Ben Sherman and Fred Perry were part of the Mod aesthetic. Paul Weller loved the 60's, The Beatles, northern soul music and the Mod style. He has always been a sharp dresser and to this day is called the King of the Mods. If you want something more punkish give a listen "In the City" and to get a tate of Paul's love of soul try "a Town Called Malice.

An absolute Classic song! And one of very few songs that went straight to Number 1 in singles chart in UK on its release. Also, unbelievably, “Going Underground” was actually supposed to be the B-Side for another song called “Dreams of Children” but a printing error by record company meant it went into the stores as a double A side single…Even if you look at books recording singles charts today, you will see it listed as “The Jam: Going Underground/Dreams of Children” and not just “Going Underground” Still unbelievable to this day that this was supposed to be the B-Side, as “Dreams of Children” is a very average song… You definitely need to check out their songs like “Town called Malice” “Down in the Tube Station at midnight” and “In the City”
The Jam were the first band I fell in love with as a 12 year old, they were the first band that were mine, not for my parents. Not really punk though, they were classed as New Wave and were more 1960’s influenced, The Who, The Kinks etc. This was at the height of their popularity, no.1 in the singles charts. I love the really early stuff even grittier. You are so right about his accent. I’m English but I know this rough southern accent adds something to this “angry young man” sound, just like the northern Oasis accent works so well in their lazy drawl, it’s the difference between great and masterpiece 🤩 thanks for the reaction, a real trip down memory lane. You could try Suspect Device by Stiff Little Fingers, an Irish band, again the accent adds something incredible ❤🙏
I'm with the 'Jam weren't punk' guys. They considered themselves mod influenced. But it was so much more than one or the other. To hear Weller's voice live for the first time was one of the greatest moments in my life - recordings just do not do it justice. And by the way...'Go Drummer...' Wash your mouth out - Rick Buckler is one of the all time greats. Can we have a bit of respect please.😉

NOT PUNK! 2nd gen Mod revival. Think The Who early on. This was date music for this roadie an before that drinking music when I was in the Army. The date music must have worked as the ex roadie and the photographer have kids 33 and 29. The only difference we have had on The Jam is I like Town Called Malice more than she does.
