  • The 1962 Triumph TR4 is back up and running after a full engine rebuild. Cam Break In accomplished along with some test drives after playing around tuning and setting up the Weber DCOE 42 Carburettors.

    She sounded great! I am very glad to see you getting all that progress done in your cleaned up garage, it sure has more space now! Watching the closing of the bonnet with the Webers, it looked like a spacer between carbs and manifold could help, as it would put the linkage in the raised area.

    I’m a stock guy 100% no cam Webers always a problem. But you guys are totally capable of fussing with that . But I’ll keyy try p the SU and stock cam and enjoy it the way it was meant to be. But I do appreciate you guys steadfast, getting it done with the Weber

    Wow that was a lot of ups and downs. I'm happy for you that you were able to resolve the issue's with the webers.. It does sound pretty neat. Congratulations!

      @@barry6274 Thanks Barry. Yes, it would have been pretty easy to give up on them, but I’m glad we made them work. They do sound and perform quite well. I’m sure we will get them further dialed in as we do more driving.

    hi, i have DCOE's on my TR4, they came with the car... the mechanical pump seems to deliver enough flow and pressure, i have an original AC pump. I added an inline fuel filter to decrease a bit the pressure. Also the front plate hold by 2 screws between the barrels that are hiding the return spring need to have a hole in the middle, one of the 2 carbs did not and a i had a fuel leak when i stopped the engine. The hole avoid fuel pressure building behind, it is not well documented.

    To run Webers properrly, you need to convert your distributor to mechanical advance only, eliminating the vacuum advance. It involves changing the weights and springs in the distributor. I've never done that with a Lucas dizzie (I'm running a Mallory) so don't know the specifics. Maybe someone else here does or there is info online... or reach out to some of the folks with experience running Webers on rheir Triumph 4 cylinders cars.
    There is a lot more to tuning Webers than just setting the idle mixture and idle speed. The jets, emulsion tubes, etc. are all interchangeable to fine tune the mixture at different throttle settings and rpm ranges.
    A fuel/air mixture gauge can be your best friend, trying to get things dialed in really well.
    But I have to say.... test drive 326 sounded pretty darned good (however, I watched the video on my phone, so take my "analysis" with a grain of salt).

      @@alanm.4298 absolutely Alan…the good thing about Webers is that they are infinitely adjustable with jets/emulsion tubes/chokes/venturis etc etc…the bad thing about Webers is that they are infinitely adjustable 😉

      @@cheftush I was formulating that last statement before you made it, Dave! A few years back a buddy of mine that was always messing with his webers stated that he would never have SU's (Alfa) because you always have to dink around with them. THAT was funny.

      BTW, you still have the stock cam you purchased, correct? What are the compression numbers- and what does your butt dyno tell you? She really fought you guys this time. It was satisfying to see you prevail, Dave. New engines are fun :)

    My 77 124 spider had dual Weber 44S they definitely have a distinctive sound, especially with a twin cam engine the triumph sounds great I’m definitely a sucker for the TR four.😊

    Carburettor “air horn” = “trumpet”….. 😊
    Seemed to me that the engine was more juddery at idle by the end of the video than when you were tweaking the Webers the first time round… but it was terrible right at the start !

    David, you characterized the oil pressure issue as tolerance issues but what actually solved the problem directly , thx

      @@johnclancy9860 hi John, the threaded rod was too thin a diameter in comparison to the oil pump shaft…this allowed for too much clearance around the threaded rod and oil was escaping and not being pushed through the oil galleries.

      @@johnmoruzzi7236 it depends John, sometimes there can be issues priming especially with a new pump…I know you can pack the pump with Vaseline to help overcome this, but I’ve never had an issue priming with the drill until now.

    Tush, good to see you working on the TR4, question on the intake manifold for the webers yours have 4 bolts to plug holes on the top.would you know what size they are? One o my intakes has the same opening but don’t think the bolt I partially have on it is the correct one. I’ve really struggled with getting the car tuned, and it’s kept me from driving it. I’m going to try what you did with the intake gasket. Thanks ps. The TR3 looks good…

    Why would you put dual weber carbs on the engine, but not put an exhaust header on it? All the extra breathing capacity arising from the weber carbs is probably being lost by using the stock cast iron exhaust header and stock exhaust. Weber carbs are made for racing engines, not street engines, in my experience, and run poorly on the street because the Venturi sizes need to be decreased from the sizes recommended by weber which is for racing applications and lots of wide open throttle use. With that said, best of luck to you in getting this combo to work.

      @@mikedx2706 the stock cast manifold doesn’t breathe that badly. I do have a header for it if need be, but that would also entail changing the mid pipe back to my stebro exhaust and that isn’t something I want to rework currently. This engine has had some headwork done to it and has a better cam installed so I believe that it benefits from the Webers…on a stock engine, I agree, there is no benefit to running with the Webers.

      Hi Mike in my experience I would agree with all of your comments regarding potential (or lack of) improvements to gas flow and have had plenty of fun with old Weber myself. I certainly agree with you about using smaller choke sizes for any relatively low revving road engines. (However I don’t expect that power improvements are much of a priority and all functional ancillaries often get used just because they are to hand and still work ha ha!) Kind regards buddy 😁

      Probably more like two weeks to tune a lots of $$$$
