Ff7 is set in 2007 (or "0007", where it changed to 0000 after 1999. 0000 being the year Shinra took over the Republic of Junon and became the defacto corporate government). It's also 2000 years after a specific event in which humans first appeared from another race of precursors. I have a lot of favorite memories of ff7. Most are spoilers. Instead I'll give you a fun thing: people cannot fly without wings, if they do, they are not who they appear to be. When you get anime grunts during scenes, that's whose expression you should be watching to get an idea of what they might be thinking. The game does a lot of showing not telling, and hinting and subtlety. Enjoy.
So glad you are playing this one. It's unfortunate someone said combat was like 16 - made you go into this with different expectations. This game is more a hybrid between action and turn based. This gives room for more RPG elements that 16 lacked like customising abilities and managing your ATB, not to mention party dynamics. Ultimately I believe there's more strategic depth here than 16 and the hybrid model achieves a good balance but its all personal preference.
Yeah it’s odd to compare this game’s combat with FF16. FF16 is pure action and I’d argue has zero traditional RPG mechanics. This is a “true” RPG with some light action mechanics. But to be effective at this game you cannot play it like a pure action game.

I think whoever told you that the combat is similar to 16 might have screwed you over a bit LOL. Also remember, blocking is WAY more important than dodging in this game. EDIT: Also I should mention I mean specifically *holding* block
Hi! Just found your channel. Looking forward to the rest of the series! Here's a tip for easier combat. 1. Understand that dodging has 0 i-frames. Most times, it's better to block than dodge unless it's an unblockable attack from the enemy. 2. Get used to Cloud. He's the most versatile character in both attack and defense. 3. Punisher mode. Use triangle to go to it and you get out of it by pressing triangle again OR by simply dodging. Remember that whenever you dodge, you're always out of punisher mode. 4. The materia system is the core of the gameplay since it lets you customize each playstyle of each character. You can even make Cloud a fulltime spellcaster if you want to. 5. The ATB gauge is where your combat will revolve. Do your best to always fill up the gauge so you can use more abilities/spells/items. 6. If you think you're near to stagger an enemy, save atb gauges so you can dish out your most powerful abilities and spells for more damage while they're staggered. That person who said they loved Final Fantasy X, but found the dialog in VII to be cringe gave me the most unholy case of whiplash I've ever had. FFVII isn't the most subtle game of all time or anything but holy christ, FFX is the absolute God-Emperor of cringey dialog.
Enjoy the ride and don't spoil yourself! Avoid crisis core until youve beaten the OG FF7. Also you want to be playing each character equally so you can gain max ATB, and you also cant use character triangle unique abilities without using them, so its not a system you can ignore based on playstyle.
Fun start! Combat can definitely take on a great rhythm once you get used to juggling the ATB of your party members, and you made a lot of progress already on that.
Ooo im so excited you're starting FF7R 😊 Dont know if youll see this, but when you switch to punisher mode, there is a second or two while Cloud does his animation, where you have a parry window. You can block while in the mode and parry of course, but sometikes, if you need to parry really fast and you're not in punisher mode, simply hit triangle and youll parry if the enemy hits you during that animation. Hope i explained that well enough
Also, just a tip in case no one told you already: The dodge roll in this game doesn't give any invincible frames. You are mostly meant to just block enemy attacks, with the exception of unblockable moves, like grabs.

LMFAO I was about to flame you, thinking you were mentioned in the clouds at the beginning of the game...but then I remembered the protagonist is literally called Cloud
Just one tip that will be important to know throughout: Generally, you should use stagger abilities while they are pressured, and use high damage abilities while they are staggered. Side note: You weren't damaging the legs only because you were hitting from the back. It was referring to the front legs. I've seen plenty of people lose to the boss so you're doing great!
Hey Java, I wanted to let you know that you should set shortcuts for the abilities this makes gameplay that much quicker, it maps specials to L1 + directional commands similar to FFXVI. This can be changed in the settings. These abilities can be chained together for some really awesome fluid time. But if you only keep abilities to the menu it will be needlessly slow. OG FF7 was on 3 discs but all at once whereas these will be 3 parts but released seperately.
I wanted to give myself some time to get used to the controls before making shortcuts, but even after two play sessions i think the shortcuts would be so monumentally helpful
Just finished this VOD. I am really looking forward to your next episode! Regarding your summary of the story so far: Mako is literally the lifeblood of the FF7 planet. The planet itself is alive and exists symbiotically with all living things on it. The same essence creates the very souls of everything on the planet, so life will cease to be created without it. I guess it's not all that different from 16 except that in FF7, the planet is actually feeling pain from the life/mako being drained from it. Also, people in FF7 haven't forgotten how to survive without Mako. They just rely on it because it's easier. The stories also go in different directions aside from this one theme. I did love 16, but objectively, this is the better game. I think the characters in this one are more complex. Everyone in 16 wears their hearts on their sleeves. You know exactly what they are about right away. In this one, you'll need to look a little more closely at the characters as the story progresses. You can't take anyone in this game at face value. There's a lot more going on underneath. In terms of gameplay, this one has much more complexity, customizability, nuances, and replayability than 16. Like, it wouldn't hurt to carefully read through some of the tutorial stuff again once you're more familiar with the combat system because it is information overload the first time. They try to explain the nuances at the same time the player is just trying to understand the basics.
You are gonna LOVE this one! Although you should've played or watched the 1997 OG FF7 first and the sequels and the prequel that came after it. Anyway all you need to know about Cloud right now is that he's a lost man who doesn't really have his priorities in order acting so rude closed off and hardly caring about anything but money.
No story spoiler or anything, but game mechanic thing, dont read ahead if you are worried I may be mistaken about what you wish to figure out…well breaking body parts staggers, why the legs were an option, that is all, not overly important but maybe mildly useful
Hey, IJC! Shame on me - I haven't kept in touch, since I watched your FFXVI playthrough. It's not you, it's me! Knowing how you loved XVI, I'm confident that you will LOVE this game. In the very least, you will probably love all of these characters. The voice actors couldn't have been better! VII is my favorite game of all time. Can't wait for Rebirth!
Not sure who told you the combat was similar to 16 they are nothing alike. It's a great combat system. don't get me wrong it's great but really is not like 16 in any significant way. but either way this is a fantastic game and looking forward to this playthrough.
This game is so much more epic than 16❤ I guess because it’s so much more special to people-it was also extremely revolutionary and Spond, several different types of media from what I understand including books and movies❤
You don't have to stay on him, but I'd recommend you swapping to barret when his triangle ability is off of CD. It's REALLY strong. Then just swap back after you use it.
Also, I thought you did a good job for your first time playing. The original ff7 is my favorite game of all time, lots of nostalgia tied up in that game for me. My brother just passed away, and it's a love he and I shared. I'm thankful you're playing the remake, I hope you enjoy it as much as he and I did. Love your videos lady. 😊

You definitely should switch between characters while playing because if you only stick with one character the enemies will gain up on that one player.
The party system... They dontheir own basic moves on their own, but spells/abilities must be given commands. The difference in damage is between tens and hundreds/thousands.
I am glad you made it to FF7 Remake. In my opinion its better combat wise than FF16 and it has more gameplay in it. Btw. you can use shortcuts for the abillities if you dont like to go into the pause menu all the time to use one, you can setup the shortcuts in the menu. FF16 isnt bad but it overdone it a bit with cutscenes in my opinion. And the combat was less tactical in 16 as well.
"Oh Maa-ko, sorry, I said May-ko" You're not the first, you probably won't be the last... Though as someone who always pronounced it "maa-ko" even when I first played the PS1 game, it is a pet peeve of mine, so I'm glad this game tells you how it's pronounced. I've seen entire Let's Play's of the OG game where the LP'er continues to mispronounce it throughout the entire game...
I like hearing your thoughts but I have to say for me (as a RUclips-only), the glancing around was distracting for me. It felt like you weren't paying attention to each detail. It's easy to miss something. What this game does well (more than XVI) are the facial micro-expressions. They say a lot about how a character thinks, or it can hold foreshadowing.
Totally fair! I've mentioned this in some other comments but may add this to the pinned comment but this particular session I was looking at chat a lot because they would let me know about tech issues (there were a lot that thankfully were not captured in the recording). I do interact with chat as I play though so if that's not your cup of tea I'm just letting you know now!

For me I don't mind the interaction with chat, as long as it doesn't happen over principal characters speaking or cutscenes (e.g. battle scenes, menu screens, customization, field traversal, etc). Before this I checked out the XVI ending to get a handle of your react style and it didn't bother me there so it must've been the technical issues.
I have to question how many people were born after 2005 or something in that chat because even though the game came out in the late 90s, those vehicles, bikes and some of the attire are like 1930s or 1940s. This game's time period doesn't run parallel with any reality we live in though as far as I know.
Its basically steampunk where steam is swapped out with the lifestream. They abandoned all other energysources they previously had for the lifestream energy. Since it gives much more energy albeit killing the planet in the process. Imagine if our planet used oil as its blood and our spirits "lived" inside of oil after death. And now we drain it everyday to use in our cars, to generate electricity etc. That is the world of FF7.
whoever said this game is similar to 16 lied to you. FInal fantasy 16 is probably the most distinct final fantasy out of all of them. FInal Fantasy 16 doesn't represent what the other games are. Its like play Smash Bros and saying its similar to Tekken because they are both fighting games
Started playing this the first time myself a few weeks ago, and that intro cinematic and first gameplay blew me away. I finally beat it yesterday and thought the game was incredible; the cinematics and cut scenes were so well done. It took me a while to get used to the vast differences from the original, however. One thing I don't like is how they sexualize Tifa, Scarlet and whoever other female character. Really creepy they do that. Also, all the swearing was really cringe. Thankfully, there's mods to bleep out the swears and outfits to make women not look like prostitutes!
I promise I do, as you'll hear me mention a handful of times in this video, this stream has MASSIVE technical issues - I was looking over at chat to make sure I was still online and that there weren't issues
You can make most of the combat seamless and not have to go through menus for everything if that's what your looking for, the game has a quick key menus and you can preset items, spells, and attacks so you don't have to wait as you go through the menus but you will get faster as you are going through the menus as time progresses, my advice to enjoy this great game is to pay attention to what's going on and less about the chat when things are happening, the game has so many twists and turns as you progress
FF7 is one of the best RPGs ever made! You will appreciate the remake beter if you play the original first! either way, the game to play would be FF7 remake volume 2 that will be more open world based and added more game elements from the original.

Og FF7 is one of my all time favourites! They did a good job mixing modern real time and classic turn based combat. But I do prefer FF16's more mature tone and think it has the better scriptwriting, VA direction and voice work.
I don't honestly understand the choices they give you on the timer. 20 minutes or 30 minutes, but in reality, you only need 5 minutes? What's the point in ever choosing 30 minutes? I can't even imagine someone who was bad at gaming needing more than 15 minutes. I guess since you don't know that the first time you play, maybe it's just a measure of the player's confidence level?
A few insights about Final Fantasy 7: The original game came out in 1997. It's set in a dystopian industrial world, that recalls the end of the 90's and the early 2000's (if you do a research on the compilation you're gonna see the characters using flip phones), but in a fantasy setting. FF7 is more grounded compared to Kingdom Hearts, despite it still has its quirks, which infact KH adopted and that make Final Fantasy so loved and unique. If you've played FF16 as your first FF, I can understand why you found such a stark difference between the games and why you were expecting them to be similar. FF16 is different from its predecessors in tone, since its developers wanted to try something new. Despite not being rated M, FF7's story has some of the darkest themes in the franchise, so don't be fooled by the humor and the anime style dynamics, because it's gonna be a roller coaster of emotions. Many of the topics that we'll encounter in the game are relevant still to this day, which is also why the game has aged so well. Between ecology, pollution and activism (Avalanche), capitalism, corporal greed (Shinra) and classes division, military and war (Soldier, exploitation of the young and human experiments), PTSD and mental illness, grief and many others... In this first game of the FF7 Remake trilogy, which is located in the city of Midgar (called Midgard in Norse mythology, which stands for "earth"), the rich and powerful owns all the highest technology, while the poor lives in precarious conditions and lacks of resources. The city is literally divided in upper and lower sectors, as a visual representation of the division between classes in this society. Mako is the lifeblood of the planet, it's like the lymph that makes vegetation grow, but it has also magical properties and Shinra is abusing of it, concentrating it all in reactors and consequently making the planet suffer. The game is very much rooted in reality, so everything you'll notice will most times have a realistic explanation, despite it integrating fantasy and sci-fi elements. All of the main characters, have been in some way victims of the greed and cruelty of this corporation, which is one of the driving forces that will set the party in motion towards what awaits them. I don't wanna spoiler, so I think this has been enough information so far😊
A lot of people go into FF7 Remake thinking it’s an actual remake, which it isn’t. It’s a shame for old fans that some people don’t care for turn based classic Final Fantasy and skip the original. There’s a lot in this game that assumes you’ve played the original and it will totally confuse newcomers. Despite what the developers have said. The game is actually a sequel and I don’t think that’s really a spoiler. FF16 combat is the most unlike previous games yet. So going from the latest and moving backwards will throw you off. I’m biased since I’ve loved FF7 since I got it for my 16th birthday in 1997 and played it alone in my bedroom long before social media and spoilers. So I’ll always wish you played the original first. Hopefully you will give turn based a chance with the original. You’ll miss some or the best games like 6 and 9. I just finished 15 myself and working on the Chapter 15 post game stuff. Definitely give that one a try too. Since you’re going backwards, 15 was the first action rpg style that was later defined with Remake and 16. Instead of a one for one remake of the original, they chose to do some timeline shenanigans like a Marvel movie so that people will have something to talk about and speculate as the Remake games come out. Not even lore masters have totally figured out what is going on story wise with the remakes. They didn’t want people to already know what was going to happen if it followed the original. There’s a lot of stuff in Remake that’s not in the original. It’s like an alternate timeline that the developers said will still mostly follow the story beats.
Biggs and Wedge is a Star Wars reference. Biggs is totally modeled after Charlie Sheen from Platoon. Google it lol. I have loved that movie for many years so I got that reference. Since I’m old.
ff 16 is a bad ff game. The game is dry and empty. The only thing that is little good is the combat. The open world is empty, you can't even swim in water or climb anything. It's like a picture, in which you can't interact with anything. FF7 rebirth on the other hand has great environment and open world areas, you can climb small cliffs, swim in water etc... and from time to time you even find materia in the world. I personally don't like the VR aspect in ff 7 remake and rebirth, where most of the materia and summons you get from the VR kid Chadley. It ruins the mystical and fantasy aspect of the world where the ff7 story takes place. Rare materia should be found from secret places or by defeating strong rare monsters...summons also should be hidden in mystical places or something like that. Maybe some rare materia should be quest rewards, but not from a VR robot kid guy... but from regular people in the world. The whole VR aspect ruins the fantasy world vibe a little. I mean Materia was made by ancients, it should not be so easy to simply make " develop " materia by this robot kid Chadley Also i did not like in ff7 rebirth that weird one GOBLIN guy who can box. The guy who gives the cactuar quests .... I don't understand why they put random creatures into this game that have no place being in this world. I mean is he the last goblin alive??? Really weird and random, absolutely not needed. The original game has no goblins and in this game we also don't see any other goblins. ...some of the writing also makes no sense in ff7 rebirth ( i will not go into this, but some of the fighting scenes are really stupid... soldiers don't hit Cloud from close range with automatic weapons and also stop shooting so Cloud has time listening to Sephiroth speaking to him .... just bad writing ) BUT compared to ff 16 , then ff 7 remake and rebirth are a masterpiece. ________________________ ff 16 biggest issue was that the game was full with cutscene after cutscene. Maybe people who never played RPG dont mind but for actual players , we did not buy a game to watch videos, we want game play and ff 16 was lame ....but especially the world was empty and side quests were also boring. ff 16 has almost No RPG elements in it. Over all a bad game..i am mad i fell for the trailers. Should have waited and see.

oh if i can give you some great info, i notice no one taught you or mention it.. if you prefer more action playstyle. you can set abilities and spells on shortcut menu. you can use shortcut command on battlefield.. just if you prefer more action playstyle. hope that helps and give you more option to enjoy the game, see you on next episodes :)

LMFAO I was about to flame you, thinking you were mentioned in the clouds at the beginning of the game...but then I remembered the protagonist is literally called Cloud
Just one tip that will be important to know throughout: Generally, you should use stagger abilities while they are pressured, and use high damage abilities while they are staggered.
Side note: You weren't damaging the legs only because you were hitting from the back. It was referring to the front legs. I've seen plenty of people lose to the boss so you're doing great!

Hey Java, I wanted to let you know that you should set shortcuts for the abilities this makes gameplay that much quicker, it maps specials to L1 + directional commands similar to FFXVI. This can be changed in the settings. These abilities can be chained together for some really awesome fluid time. But if you only keep abilities to the menu it will be needlessly slow. OG FF7 was on 3 discs but all at once whereas these will be 3 parts but released seperately.
I wanted to give myself some time to get used to the controls before making shortcuts, but even after two play sessions i think the shortcuts would be so monumentally helpful

Regarding your summary of the story so far: Mako is literally the lifeblood of the FF7 planet. The planet itself is alive and exists symbiotically with all living things on it. The same essence creates the very souls of everything on the planet, so life will cease to be created without it. I guess it's not all that different from 16 except that in FF7, the planet is actually feeling pain from the life/mako being drained from it. Also, people in FF7 haven't forgotten how to survive without Mako. They just rely on it because it's easier. The stories also go in different directions aside from this one theme.
I did love 16, but objectively, this is the better game. I think the characters in this one are more complex. Everyone in 16 wears their hearts on their sleeves. You know exactly what they are about right away. In this one, you'll need to look a little more closely at the characters as the story progresses. You can't take anyone in this game at face value. There's a lot more going on underneath.
In terms of gameplay, this one has much more complexity, customizability, nuances, and replayability than 16. Like, it wouldn't hurt to carefully read through some of the tutorial stuff again once you're more familiar with the combat system because it is information overload the first time. They try to explain the nuances at the same time the player is just trying to understand the basics.

Anyway all you need to know about Cloud right now is that he's a lost man who doesn't really have his priorities in order acting so rude closed off and hardly caring about anything but money.
No story spoiler or anything, but game mechanic thing, dont read ahead if you are worried I may be mistaken about what you wish to figure out…well breaking body parts staggers, why the legs were an option, that is all, not overly important but maybe mildly useful

Not sure who told you the combat was similar to 16 they are nothing alike. It's a great combat system. don't get me wrong it's great but really is not like 16 in any significant way. but either way this is a fantastic game and looking forward to this playthrough.

It’s strong and also delivers a huge ATB boost. It basically fills an entire bar. It’s a great opening move too for this reason.
Also, I thought you did a good job for your first time playing. The original ff7 is my favorite game of all time, lots of nostalgia tied up in that game for me. My brother just passed away, and it's a love he and I shared.

The party system... They dontheir own basic moves on their own, but spells/abilities must be given commands. The difference in damage is between tens and hundreds/thousands.
I am glad you made it to FF7 Remake. In my opinion its better combat wise than FF16 and it has more gameplay in it. Btw. you can use shortcuts for the abillities if you dont like to go into the pause menu all the time to use one, you can setup the shortcuts in the menu. FF16 isnt bad but it overdone it a bit with cutscenes in my opinion. And the combat was less tactical in 16 as well.
I think I'll want to have shortcuts for sure, but the pausing menu is nice whilst I learn!

You're not the first, you probably won't be the last... Though as someone who always pronounced it "maa-ko" even when I first played the PS1 game, it is a pet peeve of mine, so I'm glad this game tells you how it's pronounced. I've seen entire Let's Play's of the OG game where the LP'er continues to mispronounce it throughout the entire game...
I like hearing your thoughts but I have to say for me (as a RUclips-only), the glancing around was distracting for me. It felt like you weren't paying attention to each detail. It's easy to miss something. What this game does well (more than XVI) are the facial micro-expressions. They say a lot about how a character thinks, or it can hold foreshadowing.
Totally fair! I've mentioned this in some other comments but may add this to the pinned comment but this particular session I was looking at chat a lot because they would let me know about tech issues (there were a lot that thankfully were not captured in the recording). I do interact with chat as I play though so if that's not your cup of tea I'm just letting you know now!
@@itsjavachip thanks for taking it into account! For me I don't mind the interaction with chat, as long as it doesn't happen over principal characters speaking or cutscenes (e.g. battle scenes, menu screens, customization, field traversal, etc).
Before this I checked out the XVI ending to get a handle of your react style and it didn't bother me there so it must've been the technical issues.
I have to question how many people were born after 2005 or something in that chat because even though the game came out in the late 90s, those vehicles, bikes and some of the attire are like 1930s or 1940s.
This game's time period doesn't run parallel with any reality we live in though as far as I know.
Its basically steampunk where steam is swapped out with the lifestream. They abandoned all other energysources they previously had for the lifestream energy. Since it gives much more energy albeit killing the planet in the process. Imagine if our planet used oil as its blood and our spirits "lived" inside of oil after death. And now we drain it everyday to use in our cars, to generate electricity etc. That is the world of FF7.

whoever said this game is similar to 16 lied to you. FInal fantasy 16 is probably the most distinct final fantasy out of all of them. FInal Fantasy 16 doesn't represent what the other games are. Its like play Smash Bros and saying its similar to Tekken because they are both fighting games
Started playing this the first time myself a few weeks ago, and that intro cinematic and first gameplay blew me away. I finally beat it yesterday and thought the game was incredible; the cinematics and cut scenes were so well done. It took me a while to get used to the vast differences from the original, however. One thing I don't like is how they sexualize Tifa, Scarlet and whoever other female character. Really creepy they do that. Also, all the swearing was really cringe. Thankfully, there's mods to bleep out the swears and outfits to make women not look like prostitutes!

You can make most of the combat seamless and not have to go through menus for everything if that's what your looking for, the game has a quick key menus and you can preset items, spells, and attacks so you don't have to wait as you go through the menus but you will get faster as you are going through the menus as time progresses, my advice to enjoy this great game is to pay attention to what's going on and less about the chat when things are happening, the game has so many twists and turns as you progress
FF7 is one of the best RPGs ever made! You will appreciate the remake beter if you play the original first! either way, the game to play would be FF7 remake volume 2 that will be more open world based and added more game elements from the original.

Og FF7 is one of my all time favourites! They did a good job mixing modern real time and classic turn based combat. But I do prefer FF16's more mature tone and think it has the better scriptwriting, VA direction and voice work.

I don't honestly understand the choices they give you on the timer. 20 minutes or 30 minutes, but in reality, you only need 5 minutes? What's the point in ever choosing 30 minutes? I can't even imagine someone who was bad at gaming needing more than 15 minutes. I guess since you don't know that the first time you play, maybe it's just a measure of the player's confidence level?

A few insights about Final Fantasy 7:
The original game came out in 1997. It's set in a dystopian industrial world, that recalls the end of the 90's and the early 2000's (if you do a research on the compilation you're gonna see the characters using flip phones), but in a fantasy setting.
FF7 is more grounded compared to Kingdom Hearts, despite it still has its quirks, which infact KH adopted and that make Final Fantasy so loved and unique.
If you've played FF16 as your first FF, I can understand why you found such a stark difference between the games and why you were expecting them to be similar. FF16 is different from its predecessors in tone, since its developers wanted to try something new.
Despite not being rated M, FF7's story has some of the darkest themes in the franchise, so don't be fooled by the humor and the anime style dynamics, because it's gonna be a roller coaster of emotions.
Many of the topics that we'll encounter in the game are relevant still to this day, which is also why the game has aged so well.
Between ecology, pollution and activism (Avalanche), capitalism, corporal greed (Shinra) and classes division, military and war (Soldier, exploitation of the young and human experiments), PTSD and mental illness, grief and many others...
In this first game of the FF7 Remake trilogy, which is located in the city of Midgar (called Midgard in Norse mythology, which stands for "earth"), the rich and powerful owns all the highest technology, while the poor lives in precarious conditions and lacks of resources.
The city is literally divided in upper and lower sectors, as a visual representation of the division between classes in this society.
Mako is the lifeblood of the planet, it's like the lymph that makes vegetation grow, but it has also magical properties and Shinra is abusing of it, concentrating it all in reactors and consequently making the planet suffer. The game is very much rooted in reality, so everything you'll notice will most times have a realistic explanation, despite it integrating fantasy and sci-fi elements.
In the second game of the trilogy that will come out this month, we will be able to travel outside Midgar, through the open world, in which villages and locations are full of life despite the monopoly of Shinra, which is threatening to drain the life of the planet.
All of the main characters, have been in some way victims of the greed and cruelty of this corporation, which is one of the driving forces that will set the party in motion towards what awaits them.

A lot of people go into FF7 Remake thinking it’s an actual remake, which it isn’t. It’s a shame for old fans that some people don’t care for turn based classic Final Fantasy and skip the original. There’s a lot in this game that assumes you’ve played the original and it will totally confuse newcomers. Despite what the developers have said. The game is actually a sequel and I don’t think that’s really a spoiler. FF16 combat is the most unlike previous games yet. So going from the latest and moving backwards will throw you off. I’m biased since I’ve loved FF7 since I got it for my 16th birthday in 1997 and played it alone in my bedroom long before social media and spoilers. So I’ll always wish you played the original first.
Hopefully you will give turn based a chance with the original. You’ll miss some or the best games like 6 and 9. I just finished 15 myself and working on the Chapter 15 post game stuff. Definitely give that one a try too. Since you’re going backwards, 15 was the first action rpg style that was later defined with Remake and 16.
Instead of a one for one remake of the original, they chose to do some timeline shenanigans like a Marvel movie so that people will have something to talk about and speculate as the Remake games come out. Not even lore masters have totally figured out what is going on story wise with the remakes. They didn’t want people to already know what was going to happen if it followed the original. There’s a lot of stuff in Remake that’s not in the original. It’s like an alternate timeline that the developers said will still mostly follow the story beats.
Biggs and Wedge is a Star Wars reference. Biggs is totally modeled after Charlie Sheen from Platoon. Google it lol. I have loved that movie for many years so I got that reference. Since I’m old.
ff 16 is a bad ff game. The game is dry and empty. The only thing that is little good is the combat.
The open world is empty, you can't even swim in water or climb anything. It's like a picture, in which you can't interact with anything.
FF7 rebirth on the other hand has great environment and open world areas, you can climb small cliffs, swim in water etc... and from time to time you even find materia in the world.
I personally don't like the VR aspect in ff 7 remake and rebirth, where most of the materia and summons you get from the VR kid Chadley.
It ruins the mystical and fantasy aspect of the world where the ff7 story takes place.
Rare materia should be found from secret places or by defeating strong rare monsters...summons also should be hidden in mystical places or something like that.
Maybe some rare materia should be quest rewards, but not from a VR robot kid guy... but from regular people in the world.
The whole VR aspect ruins the fantasy world vibe a little.
I mean Materia was made by ancients, it should not be so easy to simply make " develop " materia by this robot kid Chadley
Also i did not like in ff7 rebirth that weird one GOBLIN guy who can box. The guy who gives the cactuar quests .... I don't understand why they put random creatures into this game that have no place being in this world.
I mean is he the last goblin alive??? Really weird and random, absolutely not needed.
The original game has no goblins and in this game we also don't see any other goblins.
...some of the writing also makes no sense in ff7 rebirth ( i will not go into this, but some of the fighting scenes are really stupid... soldiers don't hit Cloud from close range with automatic weapons and also stop shooting so Cloud has time listening to Sephiroth speaking to him .... just bad writing ) BUT compared to ff 16 , then ff 7 remake and rebirth are a masterpiece.

ff 16 biggest issue was that the game was full with cutscene after cutscene.
Maybe people who never played RPG dont mind but for actual players , we did not buy a game to watch videos, we want game play and ff 16 was lame ....but especially the world was empty and side quests were also boring.
ff 16 has almost No RPG elements in it.
