They can solve engineering problems, create attendance register, maintain Inventory, Billing software etc. I have a video on creating an Invoice template in Excel. Please scroll through the list of my videos to find it.
Of course we can VLOOKUP from a Pivot Table. But whenever somebody use a Slicer or Filter it can affect the structure of the Pivot Table and the formula may become useless. Better Copy Paste the values from the Pivot Table to some other location and apply VLOOKUP.

Maybe the cell is displaying the corresponding number instead of Date. If so, you need to apply Date format to the cell. Right click on the cell > Format Cells... > Date > select the required date format and Click OK
Ofcourse we can use Employee Name in the Drop-down list. Note that first column of second argument, i.e. first column of table array should contain these Employee names. Vlookup function search for the lookup value in the first column of table array.
There are 3 types of references in Excel. Relative, Mixed and Absolute. VLOOKUP is meant to return a value or values corresponding to the lookup_value or the searched value. If you want to compare the values in two different cells, you should use IF function. I have explained about IF function in the Video called 10 Most used formulas in Excel. Another way to compare data in different cells is using the = operator. For example, the formula =A1=B1 will return TRUE if the values in A1 and B1 are same and FALSE if the values are different.

Hi there, if my look up value is a column merged cells, then does it works. ?
Select the merged cell and check the address of the cell using Excel Name Box. The same address be used while writing VLOOKUP formula.
