Reto went from "I dont want to sacrifice the stout" to "lets endlessly sacrifice the stout" with absolutely no time in between, I'm actually rather impressed
If your jailer plays fair in the sense that he will never kill you out right in a single turn, then him creating like that happens you you beat him in one turn makes sense.
It has nothing to do with winning in one turn. This is the game's response to you progressing too quickly through the "tutorial" section of the game. It has more mechanics to teach you, and doesn't want you to get too far through the game until it's done with them. Fisherman blocks you on your first run, and trapper blocks you on your second run. The blocks are gone on your third run and onwards.
@@nuuskye What triggers it is getting to the second phase of the second boss on your first run, or the second phase of the third boss on your second run. On your third run and onwards, it will not happen. It exists to stop you going too far in the tutorial phase of the game.
Just in case anyone is interested: It appears that the Angler always cheats on phase 2 if you get to him during the tutorial; it doesn't matter how many turns it takes to snuff out his first candle. With that said: it's actually possible to still win the fight. I don't know how many pathways are open, but if you have a pair of scissors and an hourglass, all you need is any card with an attack of 3 or higher to pull it off (I seriously almost picked a squirrel over the hourglass because I forgot he was going to cheat and planned for the normal fight, lol). Managed to get all the way to Boss 3 on the tutorial run, but didn't get through his first phase to see if he cheats as well (mediocre draw paired with crippling accidental misplay turn one). Just a side note: my death card from that run is a free 1/6 with Many Lives I named Scapegoat.
I haven't played it yet so this is just a guess, but when you have questions about the use of some cards, you need to think of them within the context of the game. Child 13 for instance, since it's a child, and a very valuable card, might evolve into something incredible if you apply to it the sigil from the wolf cub.
child 13 is actually one of the only cards to have a unique reaction to the fledgling sigil! most cards will carry the "elder" prefix (i.e. elder opossum), and deathcards will gain no prefixes at all, however, child 13 will grow into a more powerful "child 14"
Something I've figured out just from watching you is that some creatures have an evolution if they have a shadow of another animal on the top left. That's why the geck was so good, it evolves into something much better
Was looking forwards to this game! It gets very “Daniel Mullens.” I don’t want to spoil it but I’d guess you’ll see in like 5-6 episodes, as it took me 5~ hours to hit the big moment. You’ll know when you see it. Can’t wait.
I have beat this game. It was out of 14 hours 12.5 were needed. It is amazing. Anyone thinking about it please play it before you watch retro. Other than that have fun you’re in for a ride
We gotta see more of the escape room aspect of this! They hardly teased that section in the intro/first run or the demo! And I think we'd like to see you use that death card you made!
"So maybe the only way to win is to not play the game" (Reto, 2021) Damn, I love the series, and I come here often, just to re-watch. Such a great game!
Im guessing the too fast too soon was the fact that he wanted you to die or the game has an anticheat to not rush thru the game i personally think its the first one i mentioned
There is a way to defeat him but then since you didn't pick up the candle some shenanigans happen and you end up with a smoke card (which you are not supposed to have since on the first time you don't know about bones yet)
Just got it and played abt 3 hrs. its quite challenging. Angler Boss' second phase (he actually didnt do that grizzly cheaty move) is where i perished constantly.
Wow that last one was kinda meta. A roguelike that fights back when you attempt to break them? Sounds like a horrible time. But also satisfying if you manage to break them despite that.
Actually thats not whats happening. The game just forces you to lose to each of the three bosses of the tutorial. The death cards and exploring the cabin are important. Beating the the guy actually achieves you nothing without you doing a lot of the cabin progression. Once you reach a boss and die to it, the bear thing never happens again no matter how quickly you beat them.
@@kennygallagher4700 I agree with below. I have finished the game (yeah I was free and decided to binge it today) and I understand why thise losses were forced but we could have still gotten the hints to get up from the table without being forced to lose. To me that loss didnt affect me aside from mild annoyance at best. The true horror was watching the videos and uncovering the truth. The gameplay didnt add any elements to the horror. If anything it was really fun!
You can actually win that multi bear fight. I think you need a squirrel in a bottle though because you need to drop wolf first turn (and use it to chump block the bear) and then follow it up with a two damage unit the next turn. You could just buff the wolf or a one damage unit to make it more consistant. Not actually reliable but more so. I'm also concerned about how easy it might be to get 5 damage cards since they are basically an instant win button if you can play them before your opponent deals damage. I had a lot of fun with the demo though can't wait to try out more story, cards, puzzles, etc.
Spoiler: This game is gonna take a big left turn. then a right turn. then turn into a thing. then another thing. Good luck rito. name a card after me please
Oh man I really want to know if you could have won that fisherman. I think if you hadn't gone so hard to instantly trigger the bear clan you might have been able to hold that off. Also just saying comboing the mantis twin strike and death touch on a char would be incredibly spooky. The combo system has my mind dealing with possibilities. Like if you get the black goat multiblood with a immortal sacrifice
@@Retromation well, it's sutble, but i think it's just a bit... muffled? it becomes more noticable when there's other audio, it's less pronounced and difficult to hear.

"You wanna play fair friendo? I don't!"
And instantly cries "Not fair Mister!" when the game retaliates in kind. What a fantastic moment that was :D

Spoiler:
I love how Retro goes: "you want to play fair? because i don't", and then he immediately gets stomped by a board full of bears
He asked to not play fair. *Retro got what he wanted.*
I had the same thing happen on my first run against the second boss. Not sure what triggers it, but the eyes remain red for the rest of your run

Literally installing now! So psyched for this adventure. Just came by to drop a like and comment for that algorithm boost.
Let's go baby!
This game's soundtrack and ambience are wonderfully sinister.
