What wildlife focal length do you like? 400mm, 500mm, 600mm, 800mm or a versatile zoom like a 150-600 or 180-600?

I thought 600mm was the sweet spot, but for wildlife, 400mm is perfect. 800mm is great for small birds.

      600mm f4 with 1.4 tc .

    •  9 месяцев назад +1

I use the 180-600. If I had the money, I would use the 600 PF as well. And if I had the big money the 400 TC. But I would not get rid of the zoom. Incredible flexibility.

With using Nikon Z8, 600mmPF with 1.4TC give 840mm. Ideal small bird combination for hand holding. DxoPureRAW4 cleans up any lowlight noise.

If you go with Z8 system with 800mm I think you may want 180-600 or 100-400 for birds in flight, it would be difficult to compose in frame that tight unless bird is very far

Totally agree, there were times where a second body with the 100-400, a 400 prime or 180-600 would have been great. I'll see how I go. I want to really focus in on a two lens kit and then expand slowly.

I have the Z9 with the 800 z lens. If you buy the lens make sure you get a great copy. I got the 800z and it was soft. I sent it back and the replacement is stellar. Regarding the focal length, you can never really have too much reach. I do have the 180-600 and 400 4.5 so I have lots of options. I do shoot moving birds with the 800 and it performs very well. It’s expensive but it’s really not expensive compared to the 600 F4 lens. Loved your shots taken that day. I enjoyed your video.

Great Call, I’ll keep that in mind.
Yeah I’d love a 400mm also but feel a zoom might be a better investment to also get some longer Tele landscapes.
Thanks for connecting, hope you enjoy the content going forward :)

Possibly the soft shots might be attributable to a focussing issue based on the camera body. I have the Z8 with the 800mm and after the firmware 2.0 update on the Z8 the tracking and focus are bang on even for birds in flight , hand held

I used the same Z9 body and the lens was just soft. I also had this issue with my 70-200 and my 180-600 Z lenses. I went to a local premium photography store and the lenses were soft on the Z9 they had in the shop. The replacements were sharp. I do note that the 180-600 is not as sharp as the prime. But, it’s more versatile so there’s a tradeoff.

Yes, at 5mins in that is definitely a juvenile Great Crested Grebe - beautiful birds. I also love the Z 800 PF lens and have been using it for the past 18 months. In the south of the UK many of the locations we can get to are well set back from where birds are active and I struggled with both the Z 100-400 (even with a 1.4xTC) and the F-mount 200-500 to get shots i didn't have to excessively crop in. Today I use the Z 800 backed up by the new Z 180-600 and usually put the 800 on my Z8 body and the 180-600 on the Z9. This is because the Z8 body easily fits inside the Z 800's bag mounted on the 800 lens but the Z9 doesn't. Really enjoyed your video, thanks.

Got myself exactly the same setup, Z8 + 800 PF, absolutely brilliant.
Of course, more expensive, but so much better than my old X-H2 + Tamron 150-500 kit.

Great to hear, I'm really loving it at the moment! That 800mm is incredible, perfect size, weight and quality ratio. Love the lens bag too, fits camera and lens. Glad you're enjoying your photography

I have the 800mm PF along with a Z9. It is a great lens, however if you are planning to shoot subjects at a longer distance then, depending on where you are, heat haze can be a real issue in summer during the daytime.

Great call, I had the same issue with the XF150-600mm. It's a tough one to manage but part of the challenge I guess. Thanks for your comment :)

Great work! Regarding battery, bring a power bank with you. If you are working on a tripod, this is an incredible solution.

God I love my 800. I had to repurchase the 180-600. It was a real workhorse.

Yeah I'm getting the same feeling, I don't want to use anything else haha. Was close to looking at an old 600mm F4 and adapting but love the size and weight of the 800.
I'm thinking overtime the 180-600 might be a secondary purchase. We will see :)

@@bernieshore the 180-600 is a superb lens and great value to boot. I see Photo & Video currently have a decent discount on both these lenses.

i was looking at the 800 - 600 - 180-600, in the end i went with the 600pf, the 800 is such a lovely lens and i think Z8 with any of the long lens is a win win, but i wanted a smaller form for walking etc, and using my own bag as opposed to the one it comes with. its a great lens and i think in 4-5yrs time i will get one or its equivalent if i carry on as i am going.

I was one of the very first in NZ to own 800/6.3 S. Sold it in less than a year. I find AF speed frustrating even on Z9 and I missed a lot of bird-in-flight shots due to very slow initial focus acquisition speed. I also find the lens to have quite a bit of chromatic aberration for the size/weight/price/category of lens. Now I use 600/4 S TC and what a difference. Even with internal 1.4x TC engaged, 600/4 focusing is light years ahead and is actually shaper, with better contrast and no chromatic aberration. I found 800/6.3 S front heavy, and despite being ~1kg lighter, I found 600/4 S TC easier to hold as it is much better balanced.

      Hey there,
I'm using the case that comes with the Nikon 800mm 6.3 for the Z8 and Lens. But I also have my peak design 45L with me as I had some other gear I brought out. Trying to work out best way to carry moving forward with one bag that would also hold the Nikon 800mm. Cheers

Lowepro lens trekker 600 is a good alternative to carry the lens , body with hood mounted in ready to use mode

Amazing lens but too bad almost all images were not focused on the eye. Wish Sony would make this lens to maximise it's potential
