    Because when you start tightening the screw, your going to far with it at the first, loosen lock nut and the screw and take the screw back out till it is just getting tight, release all the tension on the cable and then start over with just screwing in till it hits the spring plate inside the clutch housing, this is where you messed up to begin with, from here tighten the screw two full turns and no more, adjust all the freeplay out but for an 1/8 of an inch at the handle or 1/16 at the cable housing at the cover, and then release all the pressure on the screw until it has a little resistance to the Spring plate, then back it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn and then set the lock nut without turning the screw in. This can be done with I think a 13/16 spark plug socket and reaching through it with a small enough screwdriver and hand tighten enough to set the screw and then a 1/4 of a turn more on the lock nut and you should be in the ballpark here. Fine tune to your riding abilities. Remember new oil acts differently than used oil and vise versa, old oil will require more slack on the screw and a tighter cable due to all the crud of the friction plate in the oil taking up slack and giving it more friction, even when you tighten the cable looking to give the friction plates more room to move and release, it still will remain engaged if the oil is dirty enough, change it more often then. Or your not using the right oil to begin with maybe. Might need heavier oil omn desert country or lighter for cooler areas.

    Now I’m here in 2021 with the same f.cking problem lmao

    I figured it out: the cable was pulled too far out, so the ramp never returned to rest. The adjustment procedure was done correctly, but it was never 'set' because of that.

    Maybe the ball bearing fell out happened to me if you loosen it to much the balls fall out and you gotta take the cover off and reassemble it.

    Its been a while since I messed with the clutch - best I can remember, and looking at the comment I made at the time: The clutch cable assembly was unwound too far, pulling the ramp out of position, before the adjustment even started. The trick was to screw in the clutch cable housing almost all of the way, and start again.

      Put the clutch cable into the slack possession remove all tension on it and then re-adjust the main assembly. Remembering to turn the screw in tight and then backing it out till freeplay is felt and then tighten the nut, and that should give the clutch the right tension and adjust the cable back out to where it has 1/8 freeplay in it at the clutch lever, unless the clutch is just plain worn out, like mine is and then when you adjust it out far enough to get it into gear without clunking and trying to kill the motor, you will hear a clunking sound in the clutch itself, when this happens it time for a new clutch and plate assembly, or it will never work right.

    I've got the same problem on an '83 Ironhead. I followed the same procedure, with the same results. I'm getting ready to pull the cover and perhaps rebuild the clutch if I can't figure out "the trick" to get it right.

      +Oden Motor Shop did you ever figure out whats wrong? I am in the same boat with mine

    • @GaryLordsWayMinistry
      @GaryLordsWayMinistry 5 лет назад

      @@michaelkratochvil I thought that after you did the adjusting in the primary case and tightened back down the bid nut you were supposed to readjust the cable to get the freeplay back to the handlever. And then it was finished with adjusting it.

    At the end of adjustment procedure you did turn adjustment screw in means clockwise and it should be counterclockwise about 1/4 to 1/2 inch !!!!! That what should give you free play on your clutch lever about 1/8 inch and solve the problem. Thanx

    can you please explain better what you did wrong here..I am about to adjust my ironhead clutch and Im trying not to run into any problems..i see you said the cable was pulled too far out but not quite sure what you mean or what step that was at

      He forgot to turn the screw out instead of in before tightening up the lock nut inside the inspection cover for adjusting the clutch and then he would have had the correct play at the hand clutch lever.

    Having the same with my late 84. Been sitting for a few years because of this and the carb. I got the carb working fine now. Just spent 2 hours trying to adjust the clutch over and over again, but same result. What am I doing wrong? Anyone?

      Check the ball bearings inside the clutch release mechanism, one of mine was completely loose and floating, solved my issue

    First you need to have a minimum of 5\16 gap for your clutch face plate.
    Leave all of the slack in your clutch cable.
    Adjust your clutch first,and then your cable.
