I saw this off Broadway the first year it came out with JCM. He was a client of the talent agency I worked at. I went 5 more times. Seeing it in a tiny theatre was an experience I will always treasure. God bless John Cameron Mitchell!!! He is an amazing talent. Although, Lena Hall is a showstopper. 💛
Rain falls hard Burns dry A dream Or a song That hits you so hard Filling you up And suddenly gone Breath feel love Give free Know in your soul Like your blood knows the way From your heart to your brain Know that you’re whole And you’re shining Like the brightest star A transmission On the midnight radio And you’re spinning Like a 45 Ballerina Dancing to your rock and roll Here’s to Patti And Tina And Yoko Aretha And Nona And Nico And me And all the strange rock and rollers You know you’re doing all right So hold on to each other You gotta hold on tonight And you’re shining Like the brightest stars A transmission On the midnight radio And you’re shining Your new 45’s All the misfits and the losers Well, you know you’re rock and rollers Spinning to your rock and roll
Lena is second only to JCM, in my opinion. She was absolutely amazing. I was riveted the last 45 minutes of the show. Her Midnight Radio is so incredibly moving.
This was an amazing night! This was my 3rd night of seeing the LA run. Back Story - On the west Coast Tour (SF & LA), Lena did 2 show in each city as Hedwig. The other shows she was Yitzhak. If I remember correctly, it was a one-off that she had been pressing for, to me Hedwig. She killed it that night, to see a woman playing a man (Yitzhak) was amazing (Tony). But to see a Woman, playing a man, playing a Woman, changed the show. It made it different and edgy. Her voice was amazing! As to reveiling her breasts, she said it was a spar of the moment thing, she did in SF. She said it was just a release of joy and a FU that kinda matches the play. Be how you are!
I got so distracted by the NON stage presence of every band member. These are not overly hard parts to play at all. Could they not have found some more charismatic guys?
yeah and I feel like even having it on in the first place kinda goes against the message of the show, especially since the male actors never had to do it and it would have been a great example of desexualizing breasts and demolishing gender and all that good stuff
@@mar-rv2qb considering she rips it off at the end it does seems strange that she kept it on all that time. im guessing it was an artistic decision agreed on by both Lena dn the producer/director to leave it until that pount to rip it off. its still a powerful sttement or the character saying "this is me! i'm free! and i'm just gonna be me from now on!" i love it best performance of this number ive ever seen!!
How come she played this role? Is it not just for a queer man to play then. This is the first female I’ve seen play it and I do love it. For saying the character is a trans woman it does work more so than a drag queen. A trans woman would probably be perfect but I’m interested as to how she ended up playing it instead of one of the guys when she plays the husband
i think it's ultimately less important to the show what hedwig's body looks like than that she eventually reconciles herself with her gender identity in some way. as the lyrics say - she's 'more than a woman or a man'. i think it can work no matter who the actor is.
Who is? And honestly, JCM is amazing, and nobody will top him as Hedwig, though I saw and ADORED NPH in the role, but Lena truly leaves nothing in the tank in every performance. She floors me every time I see her.
The beauty is she is not trying to be. Nobody can play this better than JCM but she brings her own spin on the character and blows out of the water every other Hedwig, save JCM
As much I love her performance, exposing her chest at the end doesn’t make sense to me. If the point of the ending of the show is Hedwig accepting their body as it is and going back to being Hansel then wouldn’t that mean loving a body without breasts? Trust me, I’m no prude I’m just trying to understand this.
Okay so I’ve just recently discovered Lena Hall (better late than never) and that she played Hedwig. This is absolutely phenomenal!!
Fuck. Her voice. The roughness. She didn't just kill this, she straight up slaughtered it. Wow.
I come back to this video so much. They are both incredible. What a theatrical experience this must’ve been.
In terms of her vocal range, physicality, character choices she wins hands down (in my opinion) out of the new Hedwig's
Now that does the original justice
I always cry when hearing Lena on this song

Rain falls hard
Burns dry
A dream
Or a song
That hits you so hard
Filling you up
And suddenly gone
Breath feel love
Give free
Know in your soul
Like your blood knows the way
From your heart to your brain
Know that you’re whole
And you’re shining
Like the brightest star
A transmission
On the midnight radio
And you’re spinning
Like a 45
Ballerina
Dancing to your rock and roll
Here’s to Patti
And Tina
And Yoko
Aretha
And Nona
And Nico
And me
And all the strange rock and rollers
You know you’re doing all right
So hold on to each other
You gotta hold on tonight
And you’re shining
Like the brightest stars
A transmission
On the midnight radio
And you’re shining
Your new 45’s
All the misfits and the losers
Well, you know you’re rock and rollers
Spinning to your rock and roll
First time I ever saw hedwig was at the pantages where Lena played hedwig it made me feel, it was fantastic

Who the fuck disliked the video? This is beautiful and meaningful!
Hm, I didn’t know they switched. That’s amazing❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤
They didn’t switch. Lenas Understudy plays Yitzhak
Freaking AMAZING! This chick rocks to the max!!!
Holy. Crap. She KILLED it.

Some of the men in the comments here are gross asfff like yes she’s beautiful but this performance transcends beauty, gender, and sexuality.
Agreed. Pretty offensive.
Lena Hall is so talented.
I wish I'd see this live. I saw NPH, but this would have been incredible.
Amazing !!! What a voice
wow i love her she’s incredible
So deep as a switch wowowwow ...and leana's range and voice💜💜
Makes me cry every damn time
Omg! I just came here, she's so f*king amazing.
It’s unreal to me how good Shannon Conley is
This is insane oh my god wowowow
Unreal

Fuck this made bawl
I’m here for Black Swan tea & rumors
Wondering if you happen to know what night this was taken? I might have been in this audience.
Who played Yitzhak when she was Hedwig?
Is this the SF show? We were so lucky to be there, it’s still the most powerful show I’ve ever been to.
anybody have a bootleg that's not sent through email? I don't want some weird internet person emailing me no offense
ruclips.net/video/VNDs2xL60IA/видео.html&app=desktop
I love this performance but i'm distracted by the binder she's using. That doesn't look safe! (transmasc person here, so maybe it's just me)

Considering it's an official broadway performance I think the costume department knows what they're doing
palacerevolution2000 They’re meant to not take away from the performances of Yitzhak and Hedwig
Who plays as Yitzhak?
Shannon Conley
Ok but if we’re being real Shannon Conley could totally pull off Hedwig as well no cap
I would throw all of my money at that
full bootleg link please!! thank you so much
It's been deleted from RUclips, unfortunately.

Women have played Hedwig before, most notably Ally Sheedy in 1999.
@@cgm530 Totally agree.
pretty good, but still no JCM.
Who is? And honestly, JCM is amazing, and nobody will top him as Hedwig, though I saw and ADORED NPH in the role, but Lena truly leaves nothing in the tank in every performance. She floors me every time I see her.
No one is JCM and that’s his magic!!

I think it's more about embracing the body that you're in, in its natural and vulnerable state, not really focusing on the parts so much.
im sorry, but no1 dz it like john cameron mitchell.
Shes Hot ngl
