Owner of this car here: Thanks for doing the review! I don't have any family or friends who like cars so I went on a nerd rampage when Zach came to film the car and spouted out too much information (I have extremely high functioning ASD, sorry, bad genetics). Here are some minor corrections to some things said in the video: It has a Valvematic 1.8 engine that varies the amount and timing of the valve lift and is more efficient than the VVT-I engine that most Corollas had- at the time, the LE Eco was only 10 percent of production due parts availability for the Valvematic system that necessitated a different head. Later year Corollas all had the Valvematic engine and the VVT-I engine was dropped. Also, at the time of production, I think all Valvematic engines were made in Japan and all LE Eco trims were made in Canada like mine was. The CVT is tuned differently to keep the engine RPM as low as possible. The ECO model is more aerodynamic with the rear spoiler, under front bumper wheel spoilers, and special wheel covers if you had the 15" wheels like mine has that are very narrow as well. The best MPG I achieved was 53. something MPG when pissing everybody off on the highway doing about 60mph for a tank and didn't need to fill up until over 600 miles. It does around 1800 rpm at 60-65mph on the highway on relatively flat ground, it is kind of difficult to even get it to go over 3k rpm due to the tuning. Somebody in Florida said they average up to 60mpg due to how flat it is compared to Wisconsin. I bought it in 2018 from Carmax for around $13,400 before other fees and taxes with about 35k miles on it. I am actually thinking of selling it next year if I do buy a Mazda MX-5 Miata with the 6 speed manual, as this car is really boring to drive but I may keep it for winter use.
Corolla owner here (2007.) Also thinking about getting a ND miata RF (unfortunately, it will have to be with an automatic.) Or a 2025 Civic hybrid.. if I deem the Miata too impractical to drive in NY.

Agree with the final thoughts. 50mpg from an ICE motor is truly impressive. Sell this today at a reasonable price and I think it would be a recipe for success. No need for range anxiety or wasting time while your car charges. Miss simple, economical and inexpensive cars like these.
I get more range anxiety driving my gas car than if I had an EV. I been on road trips where gas stations where closed, but I had a place I would be able to charge if it was an EV. And around socal I'd never even think about range, as my car would always be charged, and almost everything is within about the 100 mile range of the most basic EV, or the 240 mile range out of a Chevy Bolt. My gas car, a Mitsubishi Mirage managed to get 60 to 65 MPG at 55 MPH. It's fully gas. (:
I suppose if you never touch a highway a kei car would make sense. Many people do drive on the highway regularly and a kei car would get run over. My preferred highway cruising speed is 80MPH, traffic permitting.
The most "environmentally friendly" option is to drive your current car (regardless of its fuel source) for as long as it is economically feasible to maintain. Buying a new brand new car is the worst thing you can do (again, regardless of its fuel source).

We have a 2018 RAV4 hybrid, it gets ~34MPG on its best days (my non-hybrid 4-cyl Camry gets close to 40), there are serious whining issues with the hybrid system and the warranty won't fix it. Repairing the battery or generator will cost $5K-$6K each. This economic corolla is a gem, all you need after 8 years is a $300 alternator and it will run forever.
I am always confused why slightly older hybrids get so mediocre MPG. I dislike hybrids, sadly automotive journalists are airheads and don't know what they're talking about. This Corolla is cheaper and easier to maintain than a hybrid.
I have a 2017 Corolla SE and to does get slightly lower gas mileage however it still does get around 40 MPG on the freeway with the 17 inch rims. I used to have a 2016 LE before my 2017 and I agree the LE seats are hard as a rock. I like my SE because it has the cloth and partial leather and they seem to be much more comfortable than the LE version. The back seat on these are huge with leg room, Very usable space. The 17 got an update and it looks a little bit better Overall with over 140K miles and no issues I am happy!

You are right we need more efficient cars, the good news is Toyota seems to be making every car hybrid standard. Thanks to this ideology, instead of going full electric, we could have super fuel efficient gas powered cars as the average car. The big hope is that they can make these engines also a bit more fun, or find a way to pair them with a manual transmission at the cost of some fuel economy. The next Miata will be electrified but also have a mild-hybrid, and it will be manual transmission. I am wishing them success and might even buy the car, as car lovers it's really we all really need it to work imo.

I’ve never heard any issues with the seats not being comfortable, especially in the more basic models like LE. I have a 17 XSE with the more aggressively bolstered seats, and they are still comfortable. I drive 12 hrs+ and never had one ache or pain. I’ve ridden in the back seat and was still comfortable.
I own a 2017 Toyota Corolla SE with sport mode and eco built in. I average 40 mpg on the highway and 35 city. This is driving normally of course. The best part I pay 30 bucks to fill the tank. I commute 60 miles a day for work.
Efficient cars are truly underrated nowadays. Sure, they're less roomy and practical, but they can still be quite nice to drive and live with. Switching from an '07 RX350 SUV to a Corolla Hatchback has already saved me close to $400 in gas compared to the SUV (after just 5,000 miles), and the Corolla is more engaging and maneuverable to drive.
I was shopping for a new car back in 2015 and I don't recall this model being available in Ontario. I was in two Toyota dealerships looking for MT base Corolla and I couldn't get one. Finally I got 2015 Hyundai Accent.

I really liked that style Corolla and Highlander (which used the same styling ideas and near the same interior except for seats) very nice looking 2 cars and fun
The CVT kills it. Give me an old reliable and fun manual transmission on cars like these any day. That's what people drive in Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
Unfortunately this has Toyota's outdated Entunes 2.0 that doesn't have Android Auto or Apple Carplay. Toyota failed to update it when the updated the Corolla in 2017. Toyota fell behind in tech and was one of the last manufacturers to add Apple Carplay and Android Auto while Honda and others already had it. Unlike Mazda who offered an update for their 2014-201 models, Toyota didn't offer to update
Doesn't this model have the 1.8 Valvematic instead of the regular vvti? I've heard the valvematic can be quite problematic after 100k miles, would like to know anyone with this particular model to read how their ownership has been. Great video as always dude!
This is my car and has the Valvematic engine. No problems at 112k miles and about 10 years old. I am religious about oil changes every 3k miles or 6 months.

0:59 how!!? A non-hybrid camry 2.5 with 208hp is multiple times faster and easily gets better mpg with some eco driving . This Corolla eco is quirky but it’s ridiculously slow. Cars like these corollas are not and will never be better than hybrids
What are you talking about? It makes no sense. This is a 2015 model. A non-hybrid 4 cylinder Camry from that year has 178 will not get better mpg. You are extremely confused. Also, the Eco Corolla actually has slightly more power than a regular Corolla from the same year. The eco engine from that generation became the base engine for the next generation Corolla a few years later.
The car care nut said the eco model 2014 is not recommended since it has a specific part in in the engine like an actuator that can fail and cost 5k to fix. You’re better off getting a regular non eco Corolla for reliability.
We had a few generations of Corolla made for plus-sized Americans and Canadians and then they sent us today's tiny global model. Hopefully that major flaw is corrected in the next one.
They could’ve done more to reduce weight. Manual windows, locks, mirrors. No center console or rear armrest, no spoiler, no spare tire, no trunk insulation, no interior grab handles.
When Toyota refreshed the Corolla for the 2017 model year, Eco was dropped. Also, no more S and L trims. S became SE and the XLE & SLE trims were added. Also, in 2017 the Corolla facelift and redesigned dash plus Toyota safety sense 1.0. This 2015 model does not have the safety sense features which are adaptive cruise control, pre-collision system, lane departure alert and automatic highb eams
You gotta love the Corolla small, somewhat affordable, basic transportation. But you can get 55 in town all day in a hybrid, a little less on the highway.
My Camry Hybrid tends to better on the highway. I have seen 70 MPG for portions of highway trips, and it isn't unusual to have a tank be 55 MPG or higher when it is mostly highway.
@@davidp2888 not too bad if your state has longer on ramps like Wisconsin does or there is slow traffic during rush hour. I definitely would not want this car in high elevation state like Colorado.
This has power windows because it was probably cheaper to install it on all of them than to have multiple sets of parts. Case study, the 1990-93 Subaru Loyale.
At the time, Toyota was selling Corolla L with manual rear passenger windows, which I almost bought. I also think all the Corollas of this model year had rear drum brakes but that did not affect driving dynamics too much.
Nice color. It goes to show what stripping everything out of a car can do for economy. I'd rather have a Prius though, same MPG without driving a penalty box.
Toyota puts no enthusiasm/passion in the vehicles they produce, the only thing positive about them is reliablity (which is really great by the way), but they make some of the ugliest vehicles on the road, boring to drive, and the only great vehicles they have currently is the 4Runner, Corolla GR, Yaris GR, and the Supra. The last great vehicles in general they had were in the 1990s, like majority of car companies. 🤣
Toyota is a conservative manufacturer and they always have been. They rarely take risks and it works out for them. People buy a Toyota because they know they will get a consistent, reliable, quality vehicle.
You're a cry baby. 2015 outdated and needed to have all brake assistant steering assistant bigger screen junk? for 100 years before that cars didn't have any of it and we were doing just fine and now we gotta have the latest computer module junk. What about the 1995 Toyota tersel with 456.000 that gets 44MPG. People don't know how to be happy be little is the biggest problem.

Also, the Eco Corolla actually has slightly more power than a regular Corolla from the same year. The eco engine from that generation became the base engine for the next generation Corolla a few years later.
Untl you have to spend $8000 to replace the battery.....
@@LA_Commander after 15 years of driving or 600,000 miles as proven
@@aidan1585 so you better have the money saved up and ready then
@@LA_Commander I won't be keeping any car for 600000 miles 👍 I'd much prefer 230hp and 70mpg over 120hp, 55mpg and a horrendous CVT and a groany 1.8
I had a 2015 Corolla LE (non-hybrid). Very efficient.
Dang, we really can’t get good km/L in Manila, Philippines. This car is golden!
you wont get the effeciency since the traffic sucks
homey got the LEECO
why prius wider taller car? inst that supposed to be the optimal car?
The car care nut said the eco model 2014 is not recommended since it has a specific part in in the engine like an actuator that can fail and cost 5k to fix. You’re better off getting a regular non eco Corolla for reliability.
He said they fail at low mileage or don't fail at all. Mine has 110k miles no problems.
8:28, what, you mean like, Algae fuel?
My 2016 Mazda 3 was getting 41mpg on the freeway
HONESTLY--older Corolla's (such as this one) are better.... more spacious, more visibility, etc.
We had a few generations of Corolla made for plus-sized Americans and Canadians and then they sent us today's tiny global model. Hopefully that major flaw is corrected
in the next one.
They could’ve done more to reduce weight. Manual windows, locks, mirrors. No center console or rear armrest, no spoiler, no spare tire, no trunk insulation, no interior grab handles.
Spare tires are good to have. I've always disagreed with this idea in an era sick over safety.
04:40 BIG FRIGGIN BOTTLE FAIL!!!
Is it green? Yes…very.
Corolla The Eco
the trunk is big enoguh to take care of the BFB cupholder can't hold
It has an aluminum valve cover!! Sold!!
Wish they offered this in a wagon
When you showed the engine, the cover is missing
When Toyota refreshed the Corolla for the 2017 model year, Eco was dropped. Also, no more S and L trims. S became SE and the XLE & SLE trims were added. Also, in 2017 the Corolla facelift and redesigned dash plus Toyota safety sense 1.0. This 2015 model does not have the safety sense features which are adaptive cruise control, pre-collision system, lane departure alert and automatic highb eams
Actually the eco trim was still available I just think they slowed production down on that model due to the lack of popularity
Good morning
The fabric sucks starting with the previous gen. These back seats have so much more room than the current gen.
You gotta love the Corolla small, somewhat affordable, basic transportation. But you can get 55 in town all day in a hybrid, a little less on the highway.
Exactly. Hybrids can do this all day long without an acceleration penalty or driving an econobox.
My Camry Hybrid tends to better on the highway. I have seen 70 MPG for portions of highway trips, and it isn't unusual to have a tank be 55 MPG or higher when it is mostly highway.
I want one so bad
Merging onto a freeway is a nightmare. Be careful what you wish for.
Said no one ever.
@@davidp2888 not too bad if your state has longer on ramps like Wisconsin does or there is slow traffic during rush hour. I definitely would not want this car in high elevation state like Colorado.
@@davidp2888 not really, I drove LE for a while and it is fine. CVT noise from acceleration is not great though

i wish toyota made more of these and sold these in third world countries.
everytime my brother sees one of these he gets excited because he makes up names for the wheels and car or whatever and he thinks they’re funny.
Toyota is a conservative manufacturer and they always have been. They rarely take risks and it works out for them. People buy a Toyota because they know they will get a consistent, reliable, quality vehicle.
Not every car needs to be a racecar. You'll graduate middle school one day.
And that's perfectly fine for Toyota's buyers. It's annoying to have drama with your car when you just need to get somewhere. Toyotas just work.
Actually the newer Toyotas are more fun and what you think of the styling is subjective everyone has a different taste
